Cruel Friday

A BIT like Ireland against Austria the other night, 10-man Cork City were undone by a cruel added time equaliser at Tallaght Stadium last night. Colin Healy had given City a first half lead only for Derek Foran to toe poke in making it 1-1 at full-time. “For me Darren Dennehy’s tackle was a yellow card at worst but certainly not a straight red card as happened.
Late injury-time equaliser denies City a valuable win By NOEL SPILLANE “He put in a challenge and while it looked a bit dangerous, it did not merit a red. “Maybe he should have stayed on his feet because when we went down to ten men, it changed the game,” said City’s Tommy Dunne in his summary

Walsh is set to step down as Con coach CORK CONSTITUTION head coach Brian Walsh is expected to step down at the end of the season. He’s been part of the coaching team for the past decade and lead coach for eight years. During his stint, Walsh guided the club to All-Ireland League, All-Ireland Cup and Munster Senior Cup glories. “I’ll be working with our director of rugby Gerry Holland in determining the way forward. “We’re looking at putting systems in place not just for next season, but the next three, four and five years. “We should know more in the coming weeks,” he said. Walsh was speaking after his side’s spectacular 27-24 win over Dolphin in All-Ireland League Division One A at Musgrave Park last night. Watched by a 3,000 plus crowd, Con moved to third in the table and the leading Munster club by coming from 6-24 down to snatch a dramatic win, courtesy of prop John Ryan’s eighth minute injury-time try. It was almost a replica of last season’s thriller at Temple Hill, when Con again came roaring back to win 29-28 following another late, late show. “Dolphin had more urgency in their play in the first-half and were quicker onto the loose ball, so we spoke about that at half-time,” Walsh added. Con fell further behind to a brilliant David O’Callaghan try, which put Dolphin 18
of events. “As I say, I didn’t think it was a red, but with 11 men on the park I think we could have gone on and won the game. “We had to drop men behind the ball when we went down to ten and we snuffed them out as best we could. But to take the sucker punch at the death in the 94th minute was a killer blow,” he added. “I wasn’t too happy either with the four minutes added time at the end,” said Dunne who threw a water bottle to the ground in disgust when the four added minutes was announced. “At the end of it all, we should have seen the game out and held on to the three points. “The boys worked their socks off and we looked good and we
looked dangerous. “We would have taken a point before kick-off but, in the circumstances, I am disappointed that we didn’t hold out. “We have got to eradicate these late goals and late penalties against us. I guess it’s down to a bit of indiscipline, a lack of concentration or a lad switches off momentarily and we get punished. “It’s obviously cost us a few points in the past fortnight and while there’s still a lot of football to be played, teams like Sligo and Derry just keep winning matches and we have got to try and keep in touch,” said Dunne whose side are on the road again away to Drogheda on Easter Monday. ● See P53 for more.
Munster crash to defeat at Glasgow GLASGOW regained top spot in the RaboDirect PRO12 league as Munster went down to a disapointing 52-24 defeat at in Scotland last night.

By MARK WOODS points clear after 50 minutes, but Con roared back with tries from Brian Hayes and Bryan Cagney to set-up a rousing finish. “We showed a lot of belief and composure to come back. We knew there’d be plenty of injury-time, so it was a matter of staying patient and waiting for the opportunity.” ● In other games UL Bohemians and Shannon helped their relegation battle by defeating Young Munster and Garryowen respectively. ● See match report on P53.
