Messi benched as Barca blitzed LIONEL MESSI was a frustrated observer as Barcelona had a 7-0 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals, but coach Tito Vilanova confirmed the star forward missed last night’s second leg as a precaution. Bayern prevailed 3-0 at the Nou Camp last night to set up an all-German Wembley final against Borussia Dortmund on May 25. Any hopes Barca had of turning around the 4-0 first-leg score were hurt before kick-off

SOCCER when Messi was named on the bench, and finished the match as an unused sub. But Vilanova said the Argentina international was not injured. “Messi felt good against Bilbao (on Saturday), but in the final minutes he noticed a strange feeling,” Vilanova said of the fourtime world player of the year. “He’s not injured, but he felt he could pick up an injury.” ● More soccer P47.
McDonnell back for Cork hurlers
STEPHEN McDonnell will return to the Cork hurling fold next Saturday night for the first time since the national league clash with Waterford on March 10. The Glen Rovers has been marked absent since breaking a finger and missed the league encounters with Clare, Galway and Kilkenny. However, he is likely to feature in the Cork defence against Limerick in a challenge encounter at Kilworth on Saturday at 7.30pm, as he seeks to re-claim the number three jersey for the championship clash with Clare or Waterford next month. Also back in the frame for the game at the splendid Kilworth complex will be Shane O’Neill, who missed the last two league encounters with Galway and Kilkenny with a leg injury. He is now fully fit again for the first of three challenge games. The following Sunday night Tipperary will be attractive visitors to Cloughduv for the official opening of their magnificent grounds, while a game against Galway will be pencilled in as well. Jimmy Barry-Murphy and his selectors will be in experimental mode for the visit of John Allen’s Limerick to Kilworth and will be without some members of the squad because of club football. By JOHN HORGAN and Bud Hartnett are likely to see game time in these challenge encounters and there will be particular emphasis on the attacking formation. A vacancy in that department has been created by the serious leg injury sustained by Paudie O’Sullivan. One of them will be Cathal Naughton who scored two points when he was introduced as a sub in the relegation defeat by Clare. He missed the early part of the year through injury but is now fully fit again. ● Dohenys are in mourning after the death of Dr Michael Herlihy on Tuesday at Marymount Hospice. The father of Cork U21 football selector Brian and club stalwart is reposing in his home at Sackville Street in Dunmanway from 4.30pm today until 7.30pm. ● Maura Forbes, the wife of former Cork County Board chairman Jim, passed away yesterday and her removal will take place tomorrow from 6pm in Forde’s Funeral Home in Carrigaline. ● More GAA P51-53.
