We’re not in crisis says frustrated City boss Dunne Cork City Limerick
Kelly is fit and ready for action
Cork star shines on return for Ballincollig GOOD news for Cork football boss Conor Counihan.
Star forward Paddy Kelly is fit and ready to challenge strongly for a starting place against Limerick in the Munster championship later in the month. Counihan was present at Páirc Uí Rinn last night to watch Kelly put on a classy display for his club Ballincollig in their victory over Douglas in the opening round of the Cork County SFC. He scored two fine points, set up a few more scores and in general made a handsome contribution in the 2-10 to 1-7 triumph over the city team. In the immediate aftermath of the game he expressed satisfaction with his team’s victory and his own return to health after missing out on Cork’s entire league campaign. “Yes, this was probably always the target, it was unlikely I was going to make the league with Cork so it was a case of getting fit for this game. “The first round of the
FOOTBALL By JOHN HORGAN championship is always vital and to get the win for a dual club like ours is huge. Now our hurlers can concentrate on hurling for the next three or four weeks. Kelly, who will be a key player for Cork in the forthcoming Munster and All-Ireland championship series, expressed himself happy with his fitness. “Yes, I was fine, it’s a bit stiff now from twisting and turning, not used to that but I feel good and hopefully I can drive on with Cork now for the next few weeks. “We’ll train tonight and Thursday and that’s where the hard work starts. Whether or not I make the team for the Limerick match will depend on training and A versus B games. “Winning here means I can give my full concentration to Cork because if we’d lost you could be thrown in at any time for the second round. ● See P51 for match report.

CORK CITY
By NOEL SPILLANE
CORK CITY boss Tommy Dunne said his team are not in a crisis situation just yet after a 3-2 home defeat to Munster rivals Limerick at Turner’s Cross yesterday. This latest setback leaves the Leesiders just above a bottom four of Shelbourne, Bohemians, Bray and UCD but of more concern to Dunne is the fact that Cork have picked up a mere 13 points from a possible 36 after the opening series of league fixtures. “It’s just incredible and so frustrating for everyone that we are making the same basic errors week in, and week out and we paid
a heavy price again. “I felt our performance was reasonably good given that we only had 10 men for the entire second half and I felt we deserved a 3-3 draw,” he added. Cork go to Bohemians and Dalymount Park on Friday night (7.45pm) for a must win game but they will be without centre-half Darren Dennehy again as he serves out an automatic match ban for the second time in a month. And Daryl Kavanagh and Johnny Dunleavy are doubts after both players were sent home with a virus before kick-off. ● See P52-53 for more.
WIGAN manager Roberto Martinez takes charge of his 150th Barclays Premier League match for the club tonight, but insists the only landmark he is interested in is a ninth successive season in the top flight. With safety still three points away after Sunderland drew 1-1 against Stoke, the Latics need to focus on getting something from their penultimate home match against Swansea. But while a win would get them out of the bottom three on goal difference with two games to go, Martinez insists being there on the final day of

Martinez has only survival in mind
the season is what really counts. “I never really take much notice of landmarks, but 150 games is an incredible number,” said Martinez. “There’s not many managers who have done it, put it that way. “At 39 to have that honour is very satisfying, but football is not about managers or landmarks it is about reaching our aim. “We’re not viewing the (Swansea) game simply as a chance to move out of the bottom three. ● See Premier Fans on P45.
