Cadogan and O’Sullivan are out for Rebels INJURIES to first-choice defenders Eoin Cadogan and Jamie O’Sullivan have forced Cork into a reshuffle ahead of their clash with Limerick on Saturday. Cadogan has a longstanding Achilles issue, while O’Sullivan limped off in Bishopstown’s SFC loss to Ilen, and neither have been able to train fully in the build-up to the Munster quarter-final. This opens the door for U21 captain Damien Cahalane, Fermoy’s Tomás Clancy and Antrim import James Loughrey, now playing for Mallow, to make their debuts. Michael Shields, Noel O’Leary and Paudie Kissane will anchor the defence, though if Graham Canty drops back from midfield where he thrived in the league, there will be two defensive slots remaining with Cahalane and Clancy in pole position. Bishopstown’s Ken O’Halloran will be handed his championship debut in goal, as 36-year-old Alan Quirke was marked absent

Injuries and form will see at least five debutants in team for Limerick FOOTBALL

By ÉAMONN MURPHY during the league as he was overseas with the army. The Valley Rovers veteran did return last week and lined out for their junior A side in a loss to Ballinhassig, so will be on the bench. In midfield Aidan Walsh will be partnered by Canty or Pearse O’Neill, who struggled with injuries during the league. The Aghada man is still ahead of Alan O’Connor, another established player largely absent this spring, in the pecking order. Even without long-term absentee Colm O’Neill there is major competition in attack, but the likelihood is debuts will be handed to U21 sharpshooter Brian Hurley at 15 and one from Castletownbere wing-forward

Andrew O’Sullivan and Haven’s Mark Collins, who has been used as a championship sub before. Ballincollig’s Pa Kelly make have to be content with a slot on the bench after his injury problems. It’s the same with Fintan Goold, especially with Ciarán Sheehan, Paul Kerrigan, Daniel Goulding and Donncha O’Connor certain to start. Overall there will be at least five changes to the outfit defeated by Donegal in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final. The management will make their decisions on the back of challenge matches against Derry and Laois. ● See P51-53 for more.

Injuries to Eoin Cadogan and Jamie Sullivan leaves the Cork selectors with some difficult defensive issues to resolve ahead of Saturday’s SFC clash against Limerick.

THE basketball world is in mourning today for the Forde family from Blarney following the passing of Annette Forde (now Linehan) yesterday. Once part of the legendary Flying Forde sisters that dominated Irish basketball in the 80s, Caroline, Annette and Miriam, Caroline is now the only surviving sister. Miriam passed away eight years ago and now Annette, 47 has also passed away. Today the basketball world’s thoughts are with Annette’s husband Paul and their three children, Dylan (17), Hayley (15) and Eli (11). “She was a ferocious rebounder,” Aidan O’Shea, her ex-coach and husband to Caroline, said of Annette yesterday. “She was very strong-willed and whole-hearted on the court. “She’s passed that basketball passion onto the kids.” Her former coach at Blarney Dommie Mullins agrees. “In many ways, Annette

By JOHN COUGHLAN was the unsung hero of the team. “She was in Caroline’s shadow because the top scorers always get the headlines, but she did all the pick-and-shovel work and weighed in with her 10-12 points a game. “She could make herself an offensive threat from any part of the court.” Hoop fans will be out in force from the four corners this evening and tomorrow to offer respect to the Lenihans and the Fordes because that’s what keeps the flame lit. Her husband Paul played some High School ball in the US so it’s no surprise that their eldest, Dylan, is already making waves with Neptune.

Noonan, Scannell get their reward A BASKETBALL year never to be forgotten. That is how Bord Gáis Neptune star Ger Noonan summed up his feelings after winning the SuperLeague Men’s Player of the Year award yesterday, ZULWHV -2+1 &28*+/$1. Noonan captained Bord Gáis Neptune to their first National Cup title in 21 years this year and was naturally elated to have finished the year in style

with this personal honour. “I will never forget this year for the rest of my life,” said Noonan. “Apart from winning the National Cup with Neptune as captain, my wife gave birth to our second son last year and a fortnight ago my she had twin girls, Ella and Edel.” Meanwhile, Mark Scannell deservedly won the Men’s SuperLeague Coach of the Year award.
