MIXED EMOTIONS: Blackrock players celebrate their victory over Killeagh in the County Senior Hurling Championship first round in Midleton. Picture: George Hatchell

Rockies lead city charge BLACKROCK, Glen Rovers, Bishopstown and Na Piarsaigh made it a great weekend for the city clubs in the Cork County SHC after fully merited first-round wins in the chase for the Seán Óg Murphy Cup.

The Rockies’ victory over Killeagh was warmly greeted by their supporters and, in stark contrast to 12 months ago, it banished any fears of relegation for a very young side. Kevin O’Keeffe, Patrick Deasy, David O’Farrell and Olan Kelleher combined with the far more experienced David Cashman to secure the scores that safely put them through to the fourth round draw. The Glen secured the bragging rights in the all city clash with the Barrs with Paul Virgo doing the business with a very impressive return of 2-2. Last year’s beaten finalists, Bishopstown are up and running again after edging out Courcey Rovers by just a point and they had to exhibit tremendous character to do so, coming back from a seven-point deficit early in the second-half to turn the game around. However — worryingly from a Cork perspective — Pa Cronin, who has been sick with pneumonia, didn’t last until half-time. There was joy too for Na Piarsaigh too after they got the better of Erin’s Own, super sub Ian McDonnell grabbing a vital goal after being introduced in extra-time.
