Dunne: Buck stops with me Cork City Shamrock Rovers

CORK CITY are far too nice, too timid and too accommodating to visiting teams at what used to be ‘fortress’ Turner’s Cross. City boss Tommy Dunne called on his team to be more ruthless, more clinical and far more aggressive after they slumped to a fourth home defeat in-a-row against Shamrock Rovers yesterday. A shirt-sleeved crowd of 1,834 – some of them Rovers fans at the St Anne’s end – tried to enliven a game that never lived up to expectations.

By NOEL SPILLANE Goals from man of the match James Chambers and Ronan Finn gave the Hoops a two-goal lead before Shane Duggan’s fourth goal of the season reduced the deficit. “Four home defeats in a row is hard to stomach but we are too nice to the opposition here at home,” said Dunne. “We need to be far more ruthless and far more aggressive and we seem to have a tendency now to withdraw back into our shell when we made a few mistakes,” said Dunne afterwards. “I will take full responsibility and the buck stops with me but we do need to pick things up and fast,” he said.

TODAY Simon Zebo (pictured below) will negotiate his way through times zones and spend more of his day on a plane than on the ground, but it will matter little to the Corkman, ZULWHV 6(¤1 0F&$57+< His final destination of Sydney will see him join up at some stage tomorrow with the British and Irish Lions in Newcastle. Zebo was called up by Lions coach Warren Gatland after Zebo’s Ireland team-mate Tommy Bowe suffered a broken bone in his hand against Queensland Reds last Saturday. Zebo learned of his elevation after Ireland’s 15-12 win over USA last Saturday and said it was the best news he could have been given. “I'm absolutely over the moon. It is the best news I could ever have dreamed of. “As a professional rugby player the
RUGBY ultimate goal is to be a British and Irish Lion," he told the reporters present. "Hopefully I'll get the chance to do that if I get my cap. That is something I have to work towards now." Zebo wasn’t the only Corkman to make the rugby headlines over the weekend with former Cork hurler Darren Sweetnam scoring a try in each half as Ireland ran out 46-3 winners over Fiji in the IRB Junior World Championship in Vannes, France yesterday. Sweetnam’s Dolphin team-mate Rory Scannell also got some game time as a sub in the second half as Ireland ran in six tries in a game they owned from start to finish. ● More P42
Cork have another home game on Friday (7.45pm) when Drogheda come to town before the summer break comes into force. Meanwhile, Crosshaven have announced the return of Chelsea legend Bobby Tambling as senior team manager for the 2013/2014 season. Bobby will take charge with immediate effect and will appoint his back room staff in due course. Bobby's love for the club, his ever improving health and his undoubted ability to coach and man-manage players, especially younger ones, made this an easy decision for the club. The AGM of the Cork Branch of the Chelsea Supporters Club will be held in the Bridge Room at O’Keeffe’s bar on Leitrim Street at 8pm tonight. ● More P52/53
