Soccer boss steps down JOHN COTTER will step down as Avondale United manager after this Sunday’s O’Connell Cup final with Rockmount at Camden. One of the most successful ever Munster Senior League managers, Cotter has decided to call time on his managerial career and told the players after last night’s Munster Senior Cup final 3-0 defeat to Waterford United. Avondale have already collected six trophies this season, including a remarkable three-in-a-row FAI Intermediate Cup success, ahead of Sunday’s clash with Rockmount. Last night’s loss was just their third of the campaign and two of those were against League of Ire-

At least, I am leaving the club in good stead with six trophies and maybe another at the weekend, but I am sure the club will get someone good to take over. “We have a young team in place and they are hungry and they will want to go on and win more silverware. Cotter — whose success at the helm matched John Caulfield who he played under — explained he had been thinking of it for the last six months and told the club chairman, Kevin Daly of his decision last week and Sunday’s O’Connell Cup final will be his last game in charge. “It’s been full on and I have loved every minute of it.” ● More: P53.

THE Cork hurlers’ injury crisis has worsened after Lorcán McLoughlin damaged his shoulder ligaments at training, ZULWHV ¬$0211 0853+<. Jimmy Barry-Murphy and his selectors are already without Paudie O’Sullivan (broken leg), and, more than likely, Pa Cronin, who has been in hospital with a severe chest infection. Kanturk’s McLoughlin was outstanding during the league for Cork, but is now a huge doubt for the Munster hurling semi-final against Clare on Sunday week. The dynamic midfielder fell heavily at training and was diagnosed with torn shoulder ligaments. The Rebels are already underdogs against the Banner, while John Allen’s Limerick await the winners in the Munster final. ● More P48-50.
