Avondale out on their Eoghan AVONDALE’S captain Eoghan Lougheed shows off the team’s multiple trophy haul after a brilliant year. The Munster Senior League side picked up six trophies, including a third FAI Intermediate Cup in a row as well as back-to-back league titles. It was a fantastic season for the team who were denied a clean sweep of silverware when they lost to Rockmount in the O’Connell Cup final on the last day of the season. That was also manager John Cotter’s final game in charge after steering the team to unprecedented success.

MSL champs polish off the silverware SOCCER The Avondale boss announced his retirement days before the final in Camden, ending an 11-year association with the team. Meanwhile, Carlos Tevez will undergo a medical at Juventus today as the striker gets ready to end his four-year spell at Manchester City. Tevez is set to bring the curtain down on his turbulent spell at City by completing a £13.5m move to Juve.

City director of football Txiki Begiristain met with his Turin counterparts yesterday and it was decided Tevez should be left go. The move will go through provided Tevez passes his medical and agrees personal terms. Although Juventus will only be paying an initial €9m, a further €6m could be payable if various clauses are met over the three-year contract. Elsewhere, New Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet insists he is not scared by the

competition he faces from established first-choice Jose Reina. The 25-year-old Belgium international has signed a long-term contract, having passed a medical, after the Reds agreed a fee with Sunderland on Friday which could rise to £11m-plus. Manager Brendan Rodgers has stressed Mignolet has not been signed as a replacement for Reina, who has been linked with Barcelona for several months. ● See P45-59 for MSL news.

Cork company comes to Bowe’s aid CORK company Mycro Sportsgear have come to the aid of injured Lions winger Tommy Bowe, sending out special protective gloves for the Monaghan native to wear in the forthcoming games in Australia. Bowe suffered a broken bone in his hand at the start of the tour and though such an injury would usually end a player’s involvement, the Lions management are very keen to have him play against Australia.

RUGBY Lions medic Dr Éanna Falvey, a native of Cloyne in east Cork, contacted Mycro last week to see if they could help out and the Ballincollig-based company obliged, sending out the gloves to Bowe. “They were in touch so we sent a package of gloves out immediately,” said Ronan Curran of Mycro,

himself an All-Ireland-winner with the Cork hurlers. “We’d have worked with rugby players before – Andrew Trimble picked up a hand injury a couple of years ago and Éanna recommended he try the glove to give the hand some protection, so there was a bit of a track record there. “I’m not sure what the exact nature of Tommy’s injury is, but I know it’s a fracture and the glove

would protect the hand well in a contact sport. “A lot of hurlers use it, obviously, because there’s a lot of contact with the stick and so forth, but it would suit rugby as well. “We get a lot of hockey players using the gloves as well for similar reasons to the hurlers. “ Just last week we signed up the Italian ladies’ hockey team, for instance,” said Curran.

ROBERT HEFFERNAN, who finished fourth in the 50km walk at the London Olympics last August is determined to set a new lifetime best time for the 3km walk at the 62nd Cork City Sports on Tuesday next (July 2) at the CIT Athletic Stadium in Bishopstown, ZULWHV %$5%$5$ 2u&21 1(//. Irish sports followers marvelled at the tenacious fighting spirit of the man from Togher, who came tantalisingly close to winning a medal and was the top Irish performer on the athletic front at the Olympic Games. set by Luke Adams (Australia) in 2010. The Australian was all set to return to Cork next week, but a hip injury which may now even disrupt his World Championships preparations has forced the popular Adams to withdraw. However, the improving English walker Tom Bosworth, whose best time for the distance is almost as fast as the Corkman’s, will provide a stern test. His UK compatriot Alex Wright and South African Marc Mundell will also be in the mix. Heffernan will have strong home support from fellow Olympians Brendan Boyce, Michael Doyle and Colin Griffin, while some other continental walkers will attempt to spoil the party.
