Not good enough Dunne slams City players after slumping to students By ALAN NEARY A LIVID Tommy Dunne could hardly hide his displeasure as Cork City slumped to their heaviest defeat of their 18 top-tier games to-date in 2013. “For what we’ve come through in the last three years, if people think that is OK tonight, they have another thing coming,” Tommy Dunne said. “The game started and we gave away a goal, and from then on we were chasing the game. You are putting yourself under pressure from the word go. “You are just back from a break, and you have to get yourself into the game. If it needs to be kicked or out of the ground or down the pitch, until it settles so be it. “Then the best player on the pitch (David McMillan) hit an absolute wonder goal, and it’s an uphill battle at two-nil before we conceded a third off a set-piece. “It’s over as a contest, of course we were in it up until the second goal. Early on in the first half and the second we conceded.” Dunne conceded City’s inability to turn possession into goals was all too evident at the Belfield Bowl.

SOCCER “There are not enough goals in the team, it’s as simple and straightforward as that. If it’s not Shane Duggan or Daryl Horgan we are not getting goals. “Their set-pieces and deliveries were good, ours were not. Everyone thinks Cork should go to UCD and win, you should be dominating, and do this or the other. “You don’t have the right. You have to do the basics, don’t concede early on and keep the game alive. “At the moment, it’s naivety at basic times of the game which give us an uphill battle. For this club what is being produced by certain players is not good enough. That has to change.” Meanwhile, Cork City will feature in two live Airtricity League TV fixtures during the month of July, both to be televised on Setanta Sports. Next Friday night’s encounter with defending champions Sligo Rovers (July 5th) will now be shown live on the Irish sports channel at 7.45pm. The clash of Cork and Dundalk on July 19th, has been pushed back to 8.05pm. ●See P50 for more.

Lowry carries Irish hopes after big three make Open exit

SHANE LOWRY today carried home hopes into the third round of the Irish Open after Ireland’s four major champions all missed the halfway

cut at Carton House. Lowry, winner of the event in 2009 while still an amateur, carded a second round of 70 to lie seven under

par, two shots behind leaders Robert Rock – the man he beat in a play-off at Baltray four years ago – and American Peter Uihlein.

But Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke all made early exits as the cut fell at level par, McDowell (74) and

Six sides are one defeat from a relegation battle THE thin line that exists between success and failure in the Cork County SHC will be further illustrated this weekend for the six clubs in second round action. Killeagh, Courcey Rovers, Ballinhassig, Bride Rovers, Ballymartle and Ballinhassig were all first round losers, and another defeat tonight and tomorrow afternoon will seriously threaten their prospects of retaining their top flight status. Conversely, a victory will send them safely through to the draw for round four and

CORK SHC

By JOHN HORGAN it will re-ignite their championship hopes. It’s a similar story in the PIHC and IHC and a second defeat this weekend will set the alarm bells ringing. Cloyne, in particular, will be hoping to put their opening round defeat to Kilbrittain behind them when they tackle Blarney and for a club that reached three senior finals in a row in the not so distant past, this

is a very significant game. Brian Murphy from Bride Rovers is the only member of Cork’s starting 15 from last Sunday that is in action this weekend, and he will have a vital role to play against Ballinhassig tomorrow. Panel members, Rob O’Shea from Carrigaline and Darren McCarthy from Ballymartle will be in action as well, while a number of the Cork intermediate team will also be key players for their clubs. Meanwhile, the Cork footballers will begin the countdown to their

showdown with Kerry next Sunday in Killarney with the last major training session before they head over the county bounds for the meeting with the old foe. There was one game last night in the All-Ireland SFC qualifiers, Laois easily defeating Carlow in the first ever major Friday night game at that level. Laois won on a scoreline of 3-13 to O-12 in front of an attendance of 4,606, over 2,OOO more than last year. ●See P53/52 for more on the weekend’s local games.

Harrington (74) missing out by one shot, McIlroy (72) by two and Clarke (75) by six. “I’ll give it my best,” said Lowry.
