Record breaker Cork’s Heffernan breaks national and world marks THERE is nothing like a home victory to give the Cork City Sports fans something to cherish and once again Togher-man Robert Heffernan did it in style, not alone winning but establishing a new Irish record for the 3000m walk. Clocking consistent 90-second laps, Heffernan’s time of 11:11.94 was marginally inside the previous best held by Jamie Costin and for good measure it was also a new world masters record for an M35 athlete. The 2012 Olympic fourth-placer returned from his training base in Spain especially for the race and was understandably elated with his performance. “I’m delighted but I wanted to get my name on that record as I have all the other records, so I was up for getting it.

By JOHN WALSHE “I’m training very hard at the moment, it was very tough from the beginning but I had even splits all the way and I upped it on the last lap. The crowd were brilliant, I love the crowd and I’ve had great support from Cork all the year so it’s nice to give something back.” With the longer distances at the World Championships in Moscow in a month’s time his main aim, Heffernan explained the difference between the 3000m and the 50km on the road. “It’s shorter, but way more pain, I can feel it in the arms now. I’m going back to Spain tomorrow, for the last four weeks I was averaging 100 miles a week and the next four weeks are going to be bigger again. ● More City Sports on P46-47.
