The PIHC side were finalists two years ago and reached last year’s semi, so in a wide-open grade Cooney will have high ambitions when he takes over. Meanwhile Dónal Óg Cusack is in the Cloyne backroom set-up, where Diarmuid Falvey is manager, as they look to return to the top flight after SHC relegation last season. The situation is unclear in a number of clubs, including county hurling champions Ballinhassig and Sars. Johnny Crowley has yet to decide if he’ll stay with PIHC winners Hassig, while their opponents Sars may lose Pat Ryan due to work commitments.

THE Cork hurlers will be playing for a trophy in their first competitive outing of 2013. It was revealed today that when Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s team take on UCC in the opening round of the Waterford Crystal Cup at the Mardyke on January 19 the winners will receive the Canon O’Brien Cup. The trophy is in recognition of the success that the Canon had with both UCC and Cork and, according to UCC’s head of gaelic games, John Grainger, it is only right and fitting that one of the county’s greatest ever coaches should be recognised in this way. “The Canon, or the Monsignor as he is now, has not been in great health in recent years but it important that he is not forgotten. “We had already arranged a challenge game between UCC and Cork when the trophy would be played for but as we drew each other in the Waterford Crystal we decided to put the cup up that day. “The Canon had unprecedented

Reds can get another famous win on road RUGBY

MUNSTER can, as their history shows, defy the odds on great Heineken Cup days and they will do so again this weekend says former Munster and Ireland great and (YHQLQJ (FKR columnist David Corkery in his assessment of Sunday’s game in today’s Evening Echo. Munster went in with a game plan that centred on disrupting the Saracens’ lineout in last weekend’s game at Thomond Park and it worked a treat says Corkery. To get another famous win on the road the Munster back-row says that Munster have to do what they did last week and play as if their lives depended on it. The penalty count must be kept down though if Munster are to prosper and quick ball must be recycled if Munster want to unleash strike runners like Simon Zebo — who was passed fit earlier today to play on Sunday — and unnerve the homeside and their fans. ● See his big match preview on pages 52-53.
