Sparrow to get Newtown soaring
FORMER Clare senior star and team manager, Ger ‘Sparrow’ O’Loughlin is the new coach of the Newtownshandrum senior hurling team. O’Loughlin comes to the home of the former champions with a very rich pedigree, having coached Adare to three successive Limerick county senior titles. He was team boss in the Banner County for two years, 2010 and 2011 and as a player he was a key figure in the county’s three Munster and two All-Ireland title wins in the 90’s. He also won a Munster club championship with his club Clarecastle and his appointment in Newtown is being viewed very positively as they seek a return to the top table of Cork hurling. O’Loughlin takes over from Bernie O’Connor and will have two club stalwarts, former county title winning captain John McCarthy and Alan G

By JOHN HORGAN O’Brien accompanying him on the management team. Club Secretary Ian Minihane told the Evening Echo that they were delighted to have secured the services of such a renowned individual. “We are delighted that Ger has decided to join up with us. “He has a lot of experience behind him, both with Clare and with Adare in Limerick and we are very excited about his appointment down here’’. Newtownshandrum, who face a tough opening championship encounter against Ballymartle, expect to have a strong mix of youth and experience in their ranks again although they will have to plan without one of their
greatest ever players, Pat Mulcahy who has decided to call it a day after giving the club tremendous service. Newtown lost out to Na Piarsaigh last season in the fourth round but they remain one of the most formidable sides in the competition and the arrival of the Clare man is expected to freshen things up considerably. ● Meanwhile, Na Piarsaigh have also appointed their new management team for the coming season, with a first round clash with Erin’s Own on the horizon. Seán Guiheen, twice a county winner as a player, takes charge, assisted by James O’Connor, Bill Kelleher, Chris O’Donovan and Colin O’Sullivan. They had a mixed campaign in 2012 with Midleton’s Seán O’Brien as coach. After flopping

in round one against Douglas, they defeated Bride Rovers and Newtown after a replay, but were knocked out by Ballymartle in the quarter-finals. An injury to star forward Pádraig Gould didn’t help their cause, but the fact remains the northsiders haven’t made the semi-finals since their last SHC title in 2004. ● See P50-53 for more GAA.
Ten points may not be enough for Munster
MUNSTER could do all that is asked of them in their final two Heineken Cup games, winning both with a bonus point, but, could find it’s still not enough, ZULWHV 6($1 0F&$57+<. A maximum 10 points from the games may not be enough to see the Reds
through to the quarters. Currently third on 11 points, Munster are one behind Racing Metro and three adrift of Saracens. If Munster are to win the group and ensure qualification, they will need Racing to beat Saracens before rolling over the

French side themselves at Thomond Park. If Saracens complete the double over Racing, the English side will be set to win the pool and, providing they stay to form and beat Edinburgh, will leave
Munster chasing one of two runners-up places. Even with that scenario, with a maximum possible 21 points but finishing behind Saracens, Munster are far from guaranteed a last-eight berth, with the current second-placed teams in Pools 2, 4, and 6
— Toulouse, Castres and Montpellier — all on more points going into this weekend’s matches. Munster need, not only a bonus victory in Edinburgh on Sunday, but a Racing win over Saracens the day to ease their anxiety. ● More rugby P47.
TOGHER’S Brian Carey has moved with Dean Saunders to act as assistant manager to the Welsh wizard at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The former Greenwood, Cork City, Manchester United and Wrexham centre-half will be unveiled as Saunders’ number two at Molineux later today. “It’s a big job, the biggest I have had in my football career and to be honest it was too big an opportunity for us to ignore or pass up,” said Carey this morning. “We’d done a good job at Doncaster Rovers and got them into the promotion race but this is a step up in every sense of the word and we just couldn’t turn it down,” said Carey after the Midlands giants paid compensation to Doncaster to free up Saunders from his contract at Keepmoat Stadium. Saunders replaced Stale Solbakken after the Norwegian’s ill-fated reign came to an end with an FA Cup third round exit to non-league Luton Town over the weekend. Wolves are 18th in the Championship table and six points off the relegation zone. “I won’t have to uproot the family in Manchester either and that’s a plus for me as well. I will commute and stay over in Wolverhampton whenever necessary but we just want to get stuck in now and get the team back into a winning habit,” added Carey of an inherited Corkman, side that Brian Carey have won will becomes just three Dean of their Saunders last 18 assistant at matches. Wolves. Fitness coach, Mal Purchase is also moving to Wolves today. ● See more on P50.
