Students awaiting grants can’t afford food By MARIA ROLSTON FOOD vouchers are being distributed to UCC students who are a waiting college grants and can’t afford to buy food. UCC students’ union welfare officer Dave Carey contacted all students yesterday informing them that vouchers were available. The Students’ Union at CIT is also offering financial assistance to students struggling to pay for food. Danny O’Donovan, president of the CIT Students’ Union, said he estimates that 1,250 CIT students were still waiting to find out whether their applications for grants had been approved. Applications were made before enrolment at college as far back as August 2012. Figures from the new student grants body, Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI), reveal that 5,575 students across the country — 28% of successful applicants — are still waiting to receive their first grant payment. The agency has been severely criticised in recent months for failing to deal with student grant applications efficiently. ● Continued on page 2.

A CORK woman battling cancer has vowed to go on planning for her dream wedding as she undergoes treatment.
Claire Galvin (right) was diagnosed last year and lost her hair during chemotherapy.
