BUILDING EVERYONEFOR A guide for World Green Building Week 2022 JO IN US. #WGBW2022#BuildingforEveryone
Our holistic approach to build for everyone aligns our focuses on planet, communities and the economy with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Their often-shared challenges reveal the scale of what is possible when we come together. This World Green Building Week our global network is coming together to accelerate sustainable built environments for everyone, everywhere.
Air pollution alone kills over seven million people a year (WHO). The most vulnerable members of our communities are disproportionately affected by the energy and cost of living crisis. As the World Meteorological Organisation reports, we have a 50% chance of temporarily exceeding 1.5°C of warming over the next five years— that’s why it’s time we put people back at the heart of the built environment.
THIS GUIDE
It’s time to put people back at the heart of the built environment.
It is the world’s largest campaign to accelerate sustainable built environments across the globe.
Organised by the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), it is led by our global network of over 70 Green Building Councils and their 36,000 members.
Join us from the 12-16 of September 2022 and discover how our network is accelerating the SDGs to create an inclusive and resilient net zero built environment for everyone, everywhere.
The aim of this guide is to help get you ready for World Green Building Week, so that we can make the greatest possible collective impact.
WHAT IS WORLD GREEN BUILDING WEEK?
THIS WORLD GREEN BUILDING WEEK, #BUILDINGFOREVERYONEWE'RE
WHY IS BUILDING FOR EVERYONE IMPORTANT?
• 1.6 billion urban dwellers will be regularly exposed to extreme high temperatures—causing droughts and wildfire.
The built environment is part of the challenge and the solution.
Sustainable built environments bolster our economies’ most important asset — nature. Accelerating a more circular and regenerative economy will create new jobs and savings on energy bills. We need to take urgent action now to advance economies that are more productive and resilient for our communities and our planet.
The global built environment is responsible for almost 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions and 50% of extracted materials, accounting for 10% of employment and 50% of all wealth. Climate change risks US $16 trillion of value for residential real estate assets and US $5 trillion for global commercial assets.
These challenges remind us of what is possible when we come together. That’s why we’re inviting our global community to accelerate climate action for net zero carbon built environments with thriving communities and economies.
• More than 570 cities with over 800 million residents will be vulnerable to rising sea levels and coastal flooding.
1.6 billion people will lack access to safe, adequate housing by 2025. To combat the global cost of living crisis, we need to take urgent action now to address inadequate, unaffordable housing and enhance equity, economic productivity and environmental sustainability.
TO ACHIEVE A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR ALL, WE MUST…
Build for the Planet
Build for Communities
The climate crisis is also a global health crisis. Unless we take urgent action to reduce climate breakdown now, the health of millions of people will be negatively affected by increased temperatures and water scarcity. Infectious diseases will spread faster, and it will be harder to grow the food we need to live healthily.
