Unit 5: Technical Drawing Visual Arts Teacher Simone
What is technical drawing? Look at these drawings. How are they different?
What is technical drawing?
Technical drawing is a “universal language” used in the creation of any man-made object.
It gives us the necessary information to fabricate any object.
Who uses technical drawing?
Architects
Designers
Engineers
The tools…
Can you think of any tools we might use?
A ruler: is used to draw straight lines and to measure.
Set squares ď‚ž
Set squares are used to draw lines, parallels and perpendiculars.
ď‚ž
They are both right triangles (triangles with one right angle).
ď‚ž
One is an isoceles triangle and the other is a scalene triangle.
The compass ď‚ž
The compass is used to draw archs and circles.
Paper ď‚ž
Paper is the surface for technical drawings.
ď‚ž
The sizes of the paper are normalized. The largest is A0 and the smallest is A8.
Pencils ď‚ž
Pencils are the medium for technical drawing.
ď‚ž
They range from 6H (the hardest) to 8B (the softest).
Straight lines
A line
A ray is a line the ends in a point but continues with an infinite line
A segment is a line that ends in two points
Basic angles ď‚ž
An angle is the space between two intersecting lines.
Angles There are four types of angles: › Acute: Angles that measure less than
90º › Right: Angles that measure 90º › Obtuse: Angles that measure more
than 90º › Straight: Angles that measure 180º
Basic drawing with lines and segments ď‚ž
The drawing of perpendicular, parallels, and angles are fundamental when drawing more complex geometric constructions.
Let’s practice! 
Take your compass, ruler, set squares and pencil.
Draw a bisector
The bisector is the
perpendicular line that divides a segment in two equal parts.
Follow the steps:

Draw a parallel line
Draw the bisector of an angle
Draw parallels with templates
Draw perpendiculars with templates
Let’s get to work! 
Using the skills you have learned, try to replicate the shape below:
Find the center of a circumference
Draw an equilateral triangle
Draw a square
Draw a hexagon
