4 Basic Types of Graphic Design


1. Packaging

What other packages can you recognize instantly without needing a logo or knowing the brand identity?


2. Visual Identity & Branding

These terms refer to the recognizability of an image, like a logo, and the viewer’s association with an idea or object. Notice the progression of Starbuck's brand identity? What other companies' branding no longer uses their company name? ie. Meaning their logo is synonymous with the brand.


3. Design for Promotion

Cultural event promotion (whether for a world's fair, album cover, concert poster...) is a common way graphic design has been used to communicate.


4. Design for the Screen

There are endless opportunities to design graphics for the screen. Currently there is a lot of demand for designers who can visually communicate for the web.


What is Graphic Design?

Graphic Design... is the process and art of combining text and graphics to communicate an effective message.


GD Communicates Graphic design has one objective: to communicate messages visually.

Everyone can benefit from knowing something about the unspoken rules of visual communication. This is called media literacy.

TYPOGRAPHY

Fonts can express ideas, feelings and sensations. Consider the fonts used to write the word ANGER

Pattern Rhythm Proportion Balance Unity Emphasis


1. Pattern

Pattern is the repetition or reoccurrence of a design element, exact or varied, that establishes a visual rhythm (left, Warhol and above, Klimt)


2. Rhythm & Movement

Rhythm or movement is the suggestion of motion through the use of various elements (above, Pollock, and right, an unknown artist, India)


3. Proportion & Scale Proportion is the size relationship of parts to a whole and to one another. Scale is to relate size to a constant, such as a human body (left, Serra, below, a woman adds tiny details to a Pueblo plate).


4. Balance

Balance is the impression of equilibrium in a pictorial or sculptural composition. Balance is often referred to as symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial (above, a photo of a flower, and to the right, Copley)


5. Harmony

Harmony is achieved when the components of a work of art are perceived as harmonious, giving the work a sense of bring part of a whole (left, Hokusai, below, Manet)


6. Emphasis

Emphasis is the created center of interest, the place in an artwork where your eye first lands (left, ToulouseLautrec, above, O’Keeffe)


7. Contrast Contrast is when two very different elements are placed together (like dark and light colors) in a way that highlights their differences.


The project In your groups, choose one graphic symbol to represent your group. I will give one principle of design to each student.

You must represent your symbol, highlighting your principle of design, in a creative way. You can use a maximum of 3 colors.
