 What

is a “digital image?”

ď‚žA

digital image is an image that is created or manipulated through a computer.

ď‚ž In

our time, digital images are a large part of the images we see on a daily basis– on a computer screen, in the cinema, in video games, etc.

 Digital

images are constituted by points of light, which are generated by a computer as a combination of 1s and 0s.  This is called “binary code” and it is the language of computers.

ď‚ž Digital

images became a reality in the 1980s, when computers first had the technology to create, store and manipulate images. ď‚ž These images were very simple.

 With

the advancement of computer technology, we are now capable of creating much more complex images.

 There

are TWO TYPES of digital images…

A

“BITMAP IMAGE” is a digital photograph. It is made out of tiny points called “PIXELS”.  The pixel is the smallest unit of a digital photo.

ď‚ž Each

pixel has a value of color and luminosity. When put together, the pixels, like a mosaic, form an image. ď‚ž When a bitmap image is enlarged, it loses quality and definition.

ď‚ž Bitmap

images lose quality when they are enlarged. ď‚ž The quality of the image depends on the number of pixels used to represent the image. This is called RESOLUTION.

ď‚ž Resolution

is expressed in PPI (pixels per inch) ď‚ž The larger the resolution, the larger the image file.

A

“VECTOR IMAGE” is formed out of lines and polygons of colors that are grouped together through mathematical equations to form more complex figures.  Vector images maintain quality and definition even if they are enlarged.

 What

is binary code?  What is a bitmap image?  Can a vector image have different resolutions?  Its a bitmap or a vector?

 Project:

Draw one of the video game characters using pixels  1) Simplify the image to fit the boxes (pixels) as if it were an old version of the video game  2) Fill in the pixels with colors. You cannot make a half pixel or a line around pixels!  3) Notice how the different resolutions

 I’ll

give the name of a famous photographer to each group of 4.  We must research that photographer (birth, death, nationality, interesting facts…)  Observe their photographs. What are their themes? What is your opinion of their work?  Lastly, attempt to create a photograph in the style of this artist. You can use the camera or photobooth.  You can use «Educreations» to present (for a positive).

 1)

Ansel Adams  2) Minor White  3) Dorothea Lange  4) Robert Frank  5) Robert Capa  6) Cindy Sherman  7) Diane Arbus  8) Stephen Shore  9) Andreas Gursky  10) Yousef Karsh
