Already, our team has participated in many events. At the Tote Bot Competition, we raced totes with wheels, while during the Downtown HB Event, we entertained the public with our show of the robot in addition to some candy. Although these events are fun and a great way to connect with the community. The build season, or the six weeks we are given to construct a robot, is approaching quickly. It begins on January 9th, 2016 when the challenge for the year is broadcasted across the United States, To prepare, our mentors have trained us in the STEM fields. During this year's competition, we hope to create an efficient robot that will be able to compete at a higher level than previous years. In conclusion, the team is doing great, and we are ready for the upcoming season. Happy Holidays!

The past two months has seen a lot of growth and development within our club. We’ve transitioned from workshops and presentations that teach fundamental skills to hands-on activities that actually require the application of these skills. One of which is the deconstruction of our totebot to build our basic testbot again. I got the chance to lead this activity in the aspects of electronics. It was effective in allowing new members to practice and refine the skills that they learned. All these training workshops and activities are to help us prepare to Kick Off so get ready Hawkbots because the season is coming and fast too! I am truly thankful for my life here in America, for my family of course, and for those who have helped me through thick and thin. One person who has helped me through hard times is our mentor Andy. When I was struggling with school, Before you relax, have fun, or go on an adventure this holiday season, take some time to thank and think of those who are important to you.

Kendall Nakai Hello Friends, After 4 months of learning different aspects of robotics and the build together, and bonding through learning how to function like a well oiled machine (well, perhaps still a bit rusty,) I look forward to Build Season with all of you. The upcoming month will feel even more accomplishing than the previous four through building a work of art - er robot. But first - celebrate the holidays with family! Drink up hot chocolate and come back ready to spend long days with friends and electronics in the Auto Shop.

Regarding this season, I'm certain that we shall be financially stable. Through the donations and membership fees that have been coming in, it has supplied our budget with sufficient funds in order to buy most of the materials that we will need in order to build, manufacture, etc. etc. our robot. We also recently had our Ice Skating Fundraiser.
It was fun to recreate the robot, because it let me finally do hands on work and see the results of the training that I helped lead. The long build days during the season are a little tiring, but they are also extremely enjoyable.
Keeping consistent members showing up to every meeting has been awesome to witness as well as just seeing almost everyone be productive. Anther factor to this season would be the fact that we have just called dozens of businesses in order to see whether they would like to donate, support, or even maybe sponsor us so we shall we where that'll lead us.
“No quote”
You get to problem solve and build, which are my favorite parts of robotics, while at the same time laughing and joking with your friends on the team. My favorite part of the holidays is that my brothers all come home from college, and so do all my friends who graduated last year.
“I'm thankful that build season is finally here.”

Orange County Robotics Alliance teams convened at Marina High School on November 14th to learn a thing or two in workshops then participate in the Totebot racing competition, inspired by the 2015 Recycle Rush competition. Motor powered totes with wheel attachments were raced and timed along a track. Check out this recap video made by Team 3309: youtube.com/watch?v=VvI9lwOEiz8

Andy Weddle “By day, I’m an Aerodynamics Engineer working on spacecraft and rockets at Boeing in Huntington Beach. By night, I’ve been a mentor for the Hawkbots since the inception of the team. That doesn’t really sound as dramatic as I hoped it would. Introductions aside, I’ve really enjoyed getting to learn alongside the students on the Hawkbots the last three years. Everyone has heard me explain that I don’t know anything about robotics, so I get to learn and practice all of these brand new skills right along with the rest of the team. While the hard skills that us mentors teach in workshops (programming, machining, etc.) are useful things to know, my goal is to also teach the soft skills that I use every day as a mentor. Being a self-starter with the ability to learn independently and the confidence to tackle any problem will benefit students following any chosen career path. I’m excited for the new technical skills that we will be bringing to the team this year. Our upcoming lathe purchase will give the team the capability to build custom drive shafts and rotating parts. Our planned pneumatics and composite fabrication workshops will open up brand new design possibilities. It is going to be a great season!”

Matt So far, I've been to half a dozen meetings, and we've had a few workshops with introduction to working with some of the tools that will be used to build the robot. I've also attended the fall classic this year with the team and got to see what the first robotics events are like. There was a lot of energy at the event. It was really cool to see all the teams there with the various robots that they've worked on. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season and getting to know the team more and work with them and build an awesome robot. I have worked at Intel as a microelectronic design engineer for 3 years. I feel that my background and experience will be able to contribute a lot to the team. This is my first time being involved with FIRST, and I'm really excited about it. My goals for preseason are to get to know the team as much as possible and help everyone be ready to build. During build season, my goals are to help build the best robot we possibly can.

“Its like 6 weeks of your life where all you think about are cool things you can do with the robot. it's also 6 weeks of fun, interesting, pizza consuming, prototype making and yelling.” Calvin Tran, alumni
This year’s kickoff is on January 9th, 2016. Build Season is a six week period of time given to teams to fully plan out, build, test, and strategize for the competition their robots. It is not easy but with long hours in the Auto Shop, good teamwork and accurate record keeping, a team can get it all done, while learning and bonding together. Team 4619 • November-December 2015
