Simply put, this build season was fantastic; FIRST chose a great game and our team gained dedicated members and amazing mentors. I was given the opportunity to get to know everyone while also learning the ins and outs of programming in Java. The team has also been given the opportunity to reach out to Oak View and various schools in this area, exposing young students to the STEM fields. All in all, we have been able to bring all of our newly learned skills together to create a sturdy robot while reaching out to the community.
The build season made me feel exhausted as always, but in a good way. You get to spend more time doing the fun part of robotics, showing off your experience, and messing around with friends. I learned that no one in the club is as good at improvising as I am, and that every year is unique. When you lose a group of seniors, you lose a part of the team that has been there forever, and a lot of the processes; steps we take change. I hope others learned how to speak up with their opinions and ideas, how to CAD, how to manufacture, how to assemble, and how to build a robot while still messing around and having fun. The competition is always a blast. You get to meet new people and see the brilliant designs people had, or even designs that you had but rejected. There's an element of stress and having to make quick fixes on the robot, but that is totally and completely outweighed by the carefree nature of a lot of the people there, as well as the energy that fills the air.

This is my second Build Season, and it felt really different from my first because I had a sense of direction. Thus to say, I didn’t feel like a freshman anymore. I’m really satisfied as well that everyone was involved and learning. Competition is interesting because you see designs well executed and wonder “why didn’t I think of that?” Overall there are many incredibly driven people to meet where you can have very intellectual discussions (at least that’s what I like best, as well as team bonding and memories). It will be incredible and you’ll see how far you’ve come in a matter of months.
Build Season this year was a blast! It changed me in many aspects and really helped me solidify my knowledge in robotics and engineering. This build season, I was fortunate enough to take charge as a lead on electronics. I was able to understand the complete system of the robot electrical components. Furthermore, I helped out new members in learning about electronics, which made work more efficient. I hope the my advice from past experiences and knowledge benefited them so that they too can develop. Competition is crazy; the 13 hour day really takes a toll on you and once you arrive home, you will definitely knock out! But even more than that, it is a life changing experience! From repairing chain in between matches to scouting out other teams, the competition will demand hard work from you only to reward you with a truly awesome feeling of success in what you've accomplished.

Throughout the course of build season, it placed me in a different environment compared to the last. This would be due to the fact that I was assigned to lead the design, manufacturing, and implement the arms for our robot. Basically, it forced me out of my comfort zone, this being organizing our equipment whilst everyone worked, and placed me into a very involved, leading, and educational role. I was able to gain more experience and knowledge about SolidWorks and the ability to CAD. Being aided by my our mentors and working together with fellow members increased our efficiency and ability to comprehend CAD. Throughout the construction of the arms, I further learned things about mechanical engineering that I hadn't known before, such as drill bit sizes. Also gaining more experience with working with the tools and electrical equipment. I'm hoping that I was able to fulfill my role in leading manufacturing and teaching our new members everything that I had to offer. This would be including my experiences and knowledge on mechanical engineering, using tools and machines, CAD, and how to correctly measure and cut parts needed. Our first scrimmage allowed us to be at ease knowing that our robot was capable of all of the tasks we wanted it to compete. Also, it allowed us to learn of what types of builds the other teams designed and built. Basically, the scrimmage did indeed do what it was intended to do, being preparing us for our actual competitions. Overall, this build season has been an experience to remember and learn from. As the years go on, our club improved further and further, getting closer to the day in which we shall attain victory.

Recap
We tested the robot at Valencia High School a few days before Bag Day to see it in action, as well as select the Drive Team. There was a full field with all of the obstacles and towers and timed practice matches.

Julianne Choy In the beginning, there was me, Andy, and...Steve! It has been quite the experience watching the team grow from the first year with only a handful of students and a robot made of 80/20 to today's team of 25+ students and a robot with several working mechanisms. My favorite part about FIRST is definitely working with the kids and watching them learn and discover the joys of being a mechanical engineer. Engineering can be difficult and frustrating, but when everything works it is so very rewarding! The more people I can influence to love engineering, Taylor Swift, and cats the better the world becomes!

David Choy I've worked at Laserfiche as a software engineer for about a year and a half. I love programming and have been coding projects since middle school. I hope that the programming experience and problem solving skills I give the students will give them a boost up in their future since it's becoming so vital to every job nowadays. I'm excited to get to see the same students year after year and see their talents grow; to start with very little knowledge and become a team leader.
