There’s Something About Lily by Cleo Evans
E
veryone loves Lily. There is just something about this kooky and infectious
starlet. The talented singer and giggly girl has gone from ladette to lady, becoming a breath of fresh air that has slowly or accidentally breezed into our fashion consciousness. She openly shares her life and thoughts of her relationship experiences in her lyrics, stating “None of my songs are fictional, they’re all real.” Her sharp and humorous honesty delivers an endearing vulnerability that has whipped the British public and media into a frenzy.

After an emotionally rocky and tumultuous year in 2008, Lily Allen has arrived in 2009. From TV producers to fashion royalty, it appears everyone wants a piece of her. As the face of Chanel’s cocoon bag campaign, Karl Lagerfeld has taken her under his wing and is keenly mentoring his latest fashion muse. Her current album “It’s Not Me it’s You” is a huge critical and commercial success and features among others the hit single “Not Fair”. On this track she intimately sings: “There’s just one thing that’s getting in the way/When we go up to bed you’re just no good/It’s such a shame/I look into your eyes, I want to get to know you/And then you make this noise and it’s apparent it’s all over.” Lily, 23, laughs off her lyrics and says: “Now guys are really nice when they’re breaking up with me because they don’t want to end up on a song. However she respectfully won’t reveal which ex she sings about.
As for one of her other hit singles “22” she sings about a young girls life changing beyond her own recognition and how society perceives a woman’s age at thirty. With an illustrious string of hits under her belt, its no wonder her tour of America, Australia and Japan left fans clambering for tickets. Recently returning from sell-out tours she has announced a fourth night at London’s Brixton Academy in December. With further dates in March and April. Excitingly she will be headlining with the man of the moment, Dizzee Rascal. Lily reveals: “I’m really looking forward to playing these special shows – I’m a massive fan of what Dizzee does”. Performing with Dizzee, another raw talent who equally in the past 12 months has scored three Number One singles, two of which are “Dance Wiv Me” and “Bonkers”. Dizzee replies: “Lily and I have both worked well in the past so it’s no doubt these shows will be nights to remember”. Surely a heady collaboration not to be missed. When Super Brands Venture by Zoe Davison
BUGATTI
B
ugatti Veyron went into production last year. However this fine specimen is purely bespoke and made to order. Typically
customers will visit a château based factory in France to hand pick their desired specifications. Understandable then that Bugatti can not give a fixed price. However expect to dig deep as you will pay nothing less for road price £1.4,000,000. Eye watering maybe, this car commands respect and leaves any onlooker or potential owner awestruck. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is styled by the renowned Paris fashion house Hermès, Images: Nick Dimbleby; Bruno Clergue
making the Veyron even more exceptional. Almost the entire interior of the Bugatti Veryon 16.4 Fbg par Hermès was produced in Hermès workshops. At this end of the market, the leather is selected and hand treated by Hermès. The fashion house successfully transfers its signature into the fine details of its interior while carefully paying attention to Bugatti’s aesthetic philosophy. One to watch: Galibier 16C The concept that Bugatti are toying with is no childs’ play, it is the new four-door family car! Two to three years away from production, it has gone down a storm at the world’s motor trade exhibitions. The Galibier has taken its name from the classic four-door Type 57 and it is looking like the car will hit around 217 miles per hour.

HOTEL MISSONI
T
he five-star Hotel Missoni is the first venture into the luxury hotel business for the Milan based fashion house. Off the busy main
street of the Old Town, leading up to Edinburgh Castle is where the Hotel Missoni proudly resides. Since throwing open its doors in June 2009 it has caused quite a buzz. While Rosita Missoni is not the first designer to branch into the hotel line, Versace, Bulgari, Ralph Lauren and Christian Lacroix have all veered in this direction. However Missioni’s grand design and painstaking creative input is a remarkable debut and certainly the most talked about. The merger came into fruition when, Rezidor; Brussels based hotel giant offered her this colossal multi-million pound design project with 30 other hotels offering Missioni’s style concept. Kuwait, Oman and Brazil to name a few. The entrance is sleek, modern and subtle, but once inside, you know you’re in the terrain of a self confident fashion dynasty. There is a proficient use of many tones and shades; perfectly controlled riot of colour. With a firm belief in mixing rather than matching the Missoni approach to colour gives its products an unmistakably strong character of their own that is instantly recognisable the world over. The choice of materials and the end result are every bit Missoni’s own selections of colour schemes. Every element – cutlery, bedsheets, pillowcases, towels, sofas – have the Missoni magic. Rooms starting rate is £210.

Present: Gatwick Airport 11:45am. ‘Oh my God!! This can’t be happening to me! There must be some kind of mistake. I’m sure one of you can let me on this plane; you’ll find my particulars are very much in order! Look, is there any chance I can talk to a manager or someone in charge? Because I really don’t have the time to stand here messing around with you people.’ In her frantic mood, Andie looked up at the screen and noticed her BA flight had started to board. ‘Oi, excuse me! Passengers are boarding the bloody plane for my fight as I stand here squabbling with you! Surely you lot are making a bigger fuss than is necessary’. The flustered ground host were getting really frazzled by the agitated passenger, in a moment of desperation the manger told Andie to calm down. ‘Madam please, you ought to calm down so we can resolve the situation’. ‘Listen Mr. flight attendant, or whoever the hell you think you are, you can resolve my problem by just issuing me a boarding pass and letting me catch my bloody FLIGHT!’
Madam please,
Seven months earlier: Friday 3:30pm.
Andie took her last call for the afternoon and ran her pen through the last task on her ‘to-do’ list, with a great sigh of relief. Thoroughly pleased she had got through all her tasks and managed to meet the deadline for her report. She was even more thankful because the day had ended much earlier, she could go home and get a head start on the weekend without having to spend the rest of the afternoon with ‘the’ bitter bitch. Andie’s boss and devil incarnate had just been dumped by her boyfriend of five years. Just as Andie put her pen in its holder she noticed her desk vibrating, she quickly answered the phone. It was her friend Tracy. Tracy and Andie were two of a group of five friends who had stayed much closer to each other than the other three girls in the group. They always thought the pair of them had a lot more in common with each other than they had with the trio, it was sheer circumstance that led to the two of them becoming friends with the other three. Tracy made her way to platform 10 at Victoria Station to catch the four-thirty train to London Bridge. As usual the ever persuasive Tracy had made plans for their Friday evening. As Andie headed through the barriers to catch her train to Wandsworth Common, she wondered what young Tracy had up her sleeve, the last night out together was a little more than Andie had bargained for. She did not want a repeat of the experience anytime soon…

hen we think of ballet the vision that comes to the minds eye is Margot Fonteyn. As one of our twentieth century idols she is deemed a true artiste, one who expressed herself in the form of dance.
Born in Surrey, she joined the Royal Ballet as a teenager where she began her journey to world class. Assigned for tuitions by her mother, she was trained by some of the best dance teachers of her time, namely Russian Olga Preobrajenska.

Enduring long days of continuous practice her motivation never feigned, she quickly rose through the ranks to become centre stage and was crowned Prima ballerina assoluta at the Royal Ballet – then known as Sadler’s Wells in 1939. With growing popularity, choreographers grew inspired by Fonteyn; particularly Frederick Ashton, chief choreographer-director at the Royal Ballet. With a fondness of Fonteyne he created a number of major roles specifically for her. She not only entertained but she

moved millions during her long and graceful career. Duly her status as a celebrity was paved through her partnership with Rudolph Nureyev. Their storming performances came at a time when all speculated Fonteyn would hang up her dancing shoes as an ageing ballerina. Contrary to belief, Fonteyn aged 40 was paired with a partner half her age. This was unquestionably the beginning of a new chapter to her dancing career. For two dancers with such differing backgrounds their spectacular performances mirrored an astounding connection not yet seen. Nureyev, once said they danced with “one body, one soul”. A statement which sparked questions about their off stage relationship. One which Fonteyn denied. Sadly one night tragedy struck her before going on stage, learning of an attempted assassination of her husband the controversial diplomat Roberto Arias. This incident left Roberto Arias a quadriplegic for the rest of his life. Aware of her husbands fate she remarkably danced seamlessly through her show, however the
