ASTON MARTIN VIRAGE An every day drive by Tom Harding

The latest model to come to us from Aston Martin is the rather handsome Virage, and unlike their city car the Cygnet, this has a proper engine which matches its aggressive and sleek styling perfectly. ➤

Aston Martin’s hand-built 6.0 litre V12 engine produces 490 bhp which is fed through a carbon fibre prop shaft and a six-speed Touchtronic II automatic gearbox which handles the power very efficiently. In fact gearchanges are very smooth indeed with a very slight delay on upshifts under hard acceleration. Under normal driving conditions gearchanges are seamless and the car is surprisingly civilised and quiet. Aston have however included their own version of an upchange light too so you can concentrate on what’s in front of you on the road rather than keep a beady eye on the rev counter, assuming you are in a hurry and taking each gear to the red line. At 6800 rpm the gear indicator which is normally the cool silver of the rest of the instruments, changes to red, meaning its time to take another gear and go even faster. Of course that would mean breaking the law, which surely you will if you press the loud pedal with any effort.

When you do this, the soundtrack from the tuned exhausts is delightful and delivers a wonderful deep feathered rasp matched to a lovely howl that only a V12 can when at full chat. The traction control, which everything seems to be fitted with these days, obviously to protect you from yourself, is actually delightful. I am not keen on traction control as a rule, but on the Virage it is set up to allow just the right amount of slip from rest under hard acceleration and in corners. It is also a must for a car with this much power, as most of them would end up in a ditch on the day of delivery without it. On the Virage it has a good balance very much as if the car has been allowed to talk to you, but only if its polite and doesn’t swear. It means it’s a lot of fun to drive. ➤

The interior is typically Aston and very lovely, although I am not sure how much leg room someone would have if they were very tall, as the seat back will tilt to a more verticle position if you put the seat all the way back. The dash is a work of art, and super cool. A B&O hi fi is an option with speakers that rise out of the dashboard which would be worth having just to see them going up and down. I don’t like music in the car but I would have them. There is a small but to all this, and it’s the sat nav. The car has the fold up screen set into the top of the dashboard that is common in Astons, which I have never liked much, possibly because the old system was so dreadful. The Virage has a new system so thankfully that’s some improvement but it’s still not as good as it could be. It’s a bit fiddly if you ask me. Having said that if the sat nav system is the tipping point between whether you buy a Virage or not, then you are an idiot. ➤

I SSUE 22

Supercar 9

The Virage is easy to drive and potter about in and genuinely smooth and comfortable as an every day drive, but it is also a complete hoot to drive when you let it out of its box. This car has a split personality, as it seems modern Supercars these days must. I suppose the people driving them want them to be docile and easy to drive around town, but I can’t for the life of me think why.

Thankfully this Aston doesn’t require you to dig too deep to find its other side, the side that will make you smile, grin, hang on to the wheel and thank whoever you need to thank for the fact that you are the one driving it.

Having been commissioned by the Royal Navy and the MoD in previous years to paint their harrier jump jets, helicopters and ships, she enjoyed painting mechanical objects and found the racing world more accessible and painted her first car at the Monaco Grand Prix Historique in 2008. Quite a place to start and her car portraits were a huge success not only because of their quirky vibrant style but because they often depict the mechanics, owners and onlookers at the events the cars occupy which give them movement. ➤

Her work has taken her to a number of circuits including the Nurburgring, Spa, Goodwood for the Festival of Speed and the Revival, Dijon, the Silverstone Classic, Le Mans, Monza and Pebble Beach. AnnaLouise was lucky enough to be a pilot in the Monte Carlo Rally in 2009 & 2010 where she took part in a 1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Ti. She also received her racing license in Sardinia after a course racing Formula Fords which enabled her to race an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce at Monza in 2009 as well as Silverstone Classic in the Pre-63 GT race. Although her car paintings are very popular Anna-Louise also paints a number of different subjects from the Cartier Polo in St.Moritz to scenes of London Fashion Week and Glamorous London Restaurants. SPYKER C8 AILERON Aviation-inspired design By Harry Metcalfe

The Spyker C8 Aileron is one of Britain’s newest supercars. Surprised? ➤

Before we start looking at the new C8 Aileron, here’s a quick résumé of Spyker’s recent history. The Spyker brand resurfaced in 2000, having lain dormant since 1925, when the original company ceased trading. Debuting at the 2000 Birmingham motor show, the first new car from Spyker was the C8 Spyder, followed by the C8 Laviolette coupe and further derivatives – all in very small numbers. Spyker (the sportscar operation, not the publiclylisted holding company of the same name which owns Saab) is about to be acquired by Coventrybased automotive group, CPP. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in February of this year and the transference to British ownership is expected to be completed shortly. Spyker will be in very safe

hands at CPP, which has produced bodies and chassis for Spyker since its rebirth ten years ago. With 250 employees, it produces parts, prototypes and low-volume variants for Aston Martin and Bentley, among others, and has a formidable reputation as an exceptionally capable coachbuilder. The C8 Aileron is Spyker’s new flagship model. The first thing you should know about the C8 Aileron is that it’s effectively a brand new car: only around 20 per cent of the previous generation Spyker C8s survives in the new model. The big change is an all-new aluminium chassis boasting a much wider front track (increased by 125mm) and an extra 150mm in the wheelbase compared with the earlier models. ➤

I SSUE 22

Supercar 21

I thought it looked properly exotic when I first clapped eyes on it at the Arizona launch, parked outside our hotel in the early morning light. Spyker has really pulled out all the stops with the styling, designing all-new headlights, new ‘turbine’-style wheels, and deeper, longer doors. The car maintains the aviation-inspired design cues of the original C8 Spyder, but the longer and wider stance of the C8 Aileron makes sense of some of the exquisite detailing such as the louvered bonnet and sculpted roofline (with its purposeful air-scoop). Instead of having a key to open the doors, all Spykers come with a brushed aluminium transponder; it’s all a bit ‘007’. Pressing one of the buttons on this controller unlocks the car and sends the driver’s door gliding upwards, Lamborghini-style. I don’t know of a cooler way to enter a car, and it gets even better once you are inside. ➤

The C8 Aileron gets a completely new dash, which retains all the beautiful detailing Spykers have become famous for, but now includes a bespoke colour LCD screen to display things such as sat-nav directions, music details and a web browser. The seats are excellent, too. Developed specifically for Spyker by Sparco, they wrap around you and offer proper shoulder support, should you need it. Getting moving is also an event. Flip up the red cover shielding the main ‘On’ switch, flick the switch itself down, then thumb the starter button that sits just below. The 4.2-litre V8 bursts into life just behind you, but before you move off you’ll come across another of the big changes: the C8 Aileron is being offered only as an automatic, meaning the ultra-stylish gearlever now controls a ZF six-speed automatic gearbox. This gearbox choice is deliberate. By leaning the C8 Aileron more towards being a GT car, it opens the Spyker brand up to a whole new type of buyer. Flick a toggle switch, though, and you can manually control the gears with the paddles behind the steering wheel. ➤

I SSUE 20

As the miles pass, the first thing you notice is the quality of the C8 Aileron’s chassis. There’s fluidity on display here that moves the C8 Aileron into a different league. This chassis feels stiff but absorbs bumps beautifully, inspiring confidence and encouraging you to push it further. British engineering is responsible for the C8 Aileron’s new composure as I believe that a certain Norfolk-based sportscar and engineering specialist was responsible for the dynamics. ➤

Despite being pitched as a GT, the C8 Aileron also provides an enthralling experience when pushing on. Steering response is excellent; get some lock on and it doesn’t go horribly heavy, despite the C8 Aileron having a much quicker rack compared to its predecessors. Push the car harder and you can really begin to lean on the brakes as they’ve got great feel at speed, right up to the point where the ABS starts to cut in. I’m mightily impressed with this car. It’s so much better than I was expecting; it looks astounding, the details are glorious and the build quality top-notch. Having survived the lean times and with the takeover by CPP imminent, its order book is starting to fill up again. There are few cars out there, irrespective of power output and brand, that make you feel so excited just walking up and getting in. The fact that going for a drive is comfortable and thrilling in equal measure, and – most importantly – makes you feel as special as the car looks, is a compliment to what this small company has achieved with this car.

WIDER 42 The ultimate day boat By Tim Julier

In march 2010, Tilli Antonelli, founder and ex president of the Pershing brand, created WIDER yachts. ➤ Based in Castelvecchio di Monte Porzio, Italy, the Wider facility covers some 10,000m2 and from this base, the company designs, constructs and markets open day-cruisers, with a strong focus on excellent all round performance. The company has developed and created a new concept in yachting, the Wider Cockpit. The very first model of the Wider fleet is a 42 foot open day-cruiser featuring strong design ideas, and aims to be what Wider call a “floating water park” as well as a versatile yacht able to change and adapt to satisfy a wide range of demands. To create more space on board the Wider 42’ yacht features a clever automatic system, that allows her to widen out in just 12 seconds thanks to mobile extensions either side of the hull. Wider has thus managed to double the usable surface and significantly increase the yacht’s stability and comfort when at rest. Smaller boats like this are inclined to bob about and roll at anchor so this makes the Wider significantly more enjoyable than its competitors as a platform to swim, dive or generally enjoy the sea from. Thanks to the shape of the stepped hull, which creates an air cushion between the surface of the sea and the hull, the yacht planes quickly and maintains a highly dynamic sailing trim. Unusually and unlike normal hulls, this model is more trimmed at the stern, especially during planing, guaranteeing the yacht always sails horizontally on the water, improving her performance and guaranteeing constant visibility, too. A stepped racing hull like this is rather unusual on a pleasure boat. It requires precision engineering measurable in millimetres during both the design and construction phases to get it right. The design of the Wider 42’ hull was entrusted to Mark Wilson, one of the top experts in the world of racing yachts, who also designed the hulls with which his son won the World Championships three times, once in class P2 and twice in class P1. ➤

The excellent power to weight ratio of the Wider 42’ means the yacht can reach a top speed of 53 knots and cruise at 40 knots with just 100 l/h consumption for the two 480 hp Cummins engines. This results in a range of almost 400 miles at 40 knots, unthinkable for a yacht of this kind until now. The multifunctional steering wheel was developed through the Naviop and Tastitalia partnership and is a new and clever solution to integrate many of the onboard controls into a single instrument. It has an in-built multiview display, similar to those used in Formula 1, featuring all the information necessary for sailing, as well as significantly reducing the number of parts in the helm station. Equipment includes a GPSMap® 7012 Garmin chart plotter, equipped with a 12.1 inch touchscreen display, and new G-Motion™ technology which allows for extraordinary fluidity when passing from one screen to another, with imperceptible updates of the different zoom levels and 3D graphics. Another Garmin product is the VHF 300i digital radio, connected to the chart plotter in such a way as to create a highly reliable, latest generation navigation system.

Some very special materials have been used on this boat with the vertical surfaces inside the cabin displaying the carbon laminate, whilst the structural bulkheads are clad in a new linen fabric with a polished finish. Esthec (www.esthec.com) was chosen for the yachts decking material. It offers all the positive characteristics of teak, such as aesthetic appearance and being pleasant to the touch, whilst also being indestructible, stain resistant, fireproof, non-slip, does not splinter, and requires no maintenance. In order to guarantee maximum versatility of use, the stern can house a jet ski, rubber dinghy, or even a diving centre, in an uncovered garage. The housing for the jet ski (or rubber dinghy) lowers towards the water, forming a slide to facilitate launch and recover operations. Once the water toys have been launched, the same space can be converted into an additional sundeck. The new Wider 42 has to be the ultimate day boat, offering fast pace across the ocean, the very latest technology, stability at anchor, more deck space than any of its competitors and many much larger boats, and all the latest toys to keep you and your friends amused.

The collector car hobby is vibrant. Following a strong performance in 2010, the momentum has continued in the first half of 2011, with solid results recorded across the board, great cars coming to market, and continued interest and enthusiasm from collectors around the world. From our view point at RM Auctions we have had the pleasure of offering a magnificent roster of collector cars at our first three 2011 events to date with record sales Phoenix, Arizona; Amelia Island, Florida; and most recently, at its debut Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este sale in Italy last month (May 21). €23 Million in Two Hours More recently, our Villa d’Este catalogue featured one of the most significant offerings of collector cars presented in recent auction history, most of which found new homes. Interesting to note that our of the 32 cars offered at the sale came from 6 different countries showing that the collector car market is becoming more and more international, but we will look more into that later. Total sales sailing north of €23 million in a little over two hours; six automobiles realized prices over €1 million, with two lots surpassing €3 million – not bad going. The results indicate a continued healthy market for blue-chip collectibles with great cars – rare examples with important provenance and documentation - continuing to attract great prices. Another interesting point to underline the growth of the markets global reach is illustrated by our buyers; bidders represented 23 countries around the world, including as far away as Argentina, Brazil and Japan – further proof of emerging markets in Asia and South America. With the exception of the Talbot-Lago however, it was Ferraris that dominated the top-sellers list at the Villa d’Este sale and that still command good prices in the current market. Interesting that strong results at the auction were also realized for a visually-striking selection of six concepts, offered for the first time from the official collection of Bertone S.p.A. and offered for sale for the first time, illustrating that rare cars with impeccable provenance, that are fresh to the market attract a lot of interest. ➤ 38 Supercar ISSUE 22

Summer Auction Strong results from early 2011 sales paint a positive forecast for the upcoming – and traditionally very busy – summer auction season. In addition to a host of smaller sales planned for the coming months, the focus of the collector car world will return to California, USA in August for the world-renowned Monterey Classic Car Week and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. There will be no less than 5 major auctions that weekend, historic racing at Laguna Seca, the high class event at the Quail, Concorso Italiano, to mention just a few of the events taking place in the weekend. ➤

FERRARI 458 A major step forward By Greg Hollamby

I didn’t imagine writing about this car would be easy, as there are few opportunities these days to drive a Supercar in the UK and give it a chance to show you what it is capable of, however we seemed to manage one way or another and now know that the 458 is a very impressive car indeed. ➤

Having driven it for four days though I am convinced that only a handful of people who own these will ever really understand what they have in their garage. The engineering and technology are frankly staggering, and the result of this magic is a car with more capability than some people should probably be trusted with. It’s shockingly fast and manages its speed in such a way that you may well be deceived into thinking you are going more slowly than you really are. Add to this all the clever electronic jiggery pokery and before you know it warp speeds are being achieved in places and through corners where few cars could hope to compete. ➤

The mid mounted 4.5 litre engine produces 570 horse power which is quite a lot for any car, let alone one that weighs a touch less than 1400 kilos, and the result is a car that is faster I think than anyone sane can actually drive flat out. However, it also does a very good job of being a relatively normal car which really could be used daily, even for commuting. Quite seriously. Much of this new found comfort and useability comes from the double clutch gearbox which means very tidy gearchanges and the real possibility to use the ‘auto’ button and not be lurching to and fro with each change of gear. ➤

I was genuinely surprised by how this car can be so exceptionally fast and competent one minute and a docile one handed drive with an auto box the next. The car even has a button on the steering wheel to press when you hit a bumpy road to make it more comfortable. If you want to listen to the radio or make a telephone call (from the passenger seat obviously), or just to have a quiet time, the exhausts can be shut up to a great extent by turning the manettino the left. Personally I think the car is at its best in the Race setting which is the most focused while leaving the traction control and stability programming in place. Perhaps you might want to switch these off on the track but to be honest I can’t really think of any other reason you might want to. ➤

The steering wheel has more on it than before with not just the manettino and start button, but indicators, lights and wipers as well. Having less clutter on the steering column is good news and the controls all work well and take no time at all to get used to. I guess the big question for me is how much better is it than the car it replaces. The honest answer is that it’s almost exactly what someone with a 430 would hope Ferrari would have given them. If you are a good driver you will love it, and if you are an average driver it will make you a good driver. It’s simply that good. Go and try one.
