A life well lived - cut short How odd that Andrew and I met while on a committee for a charity event to raise money for Shipston Home Nursing, which, at the time was a new local charity. We were all in our late 20s, I don’t think any of us really thought we would need such a charity until we were old and grey. I can honestly say, that until October 2006, I never expected I would be calling Shipston Home Nursing and asking for their help with my beloved husband, who was at that point only 38. We had everything - Charlie age 4, Issy age 2 and another little boy on the way. Andrew’s business was growing and developing really well, he employed over 200 people, although stressful, this was his passion in life. His vibrant personality, his zest for new and exciting things, his tangible excitement in everything he tried was infectious. While pregnant with my third baby, Andrew’s personality changed dramatically, he became disorientated, withdrawn and very tired. He just wasn’t himself, doctors were baffled, he was tested for all sorts of things. A week later, he was referred to a neurosurgeon and even he wasn’t convinced he had anything wrong. The next day we received the devastating news that Andrew had a brain tumour and it needed emergency surgery, George, was one week old. The operation was

a huge success, Andrew made an amazingly quick recovery, was home within days and we thought we could now get on with our lives. I have to admit to doing a bit of research and knew the results of the histology report could go either way.

Two weeks later we were told Andrew had a Glioblastoma Multiforme, which is a Grade 4 brain tumour, the highest grade of cancer and the fastest growing. We were told there wasn’t a cure and Andrew was only expected to live between 18

months and 2 years. The message we were given was, “ Go and enjoy yourselves! ” Andrew coped with the radiotherapy and chemotherapy fairly well, at times he was exhausted from the radiotherapy and felt dreadfully sick from the chemotherapy, but he was up and back running his business about 6 months later. That was how Andrew coped with this dreadful disease, he attacked it for eight long years with sheer guts and an incredibly strong will. I have to admit, we had 5 years of fun - a diagnosis like Andrew’s makes you enjoy life in a different way. We had lots of holidays, made lots of memories with our children and got on with life in the best way we could. The children knew Daddy had had a lump in his head, but that was all, they were too young to understand and didn’t need to know any more. As time went on, we were so glad we didn’t tell them exactly what was going on, Andrew never wanted to be treated any differently by anyone else, most of all by his adoring children. We were living on borrowed time and had already defied the original time frame we were given. However, at the end of 2012 the symptoms were beginning to return. Following a grand mal seizure and subsequent scan, the news we were dreading was confirmed. The tumour was growing again. We both knew we would have a major battle on our hands now, but Andrew always seemed so invincible, that we never really thought it would get him. He started on another 6 month course of chemotherapy early in February 2013, which worked for a few months but then things started moving again. I had the telephone call we all dread, from a complete stranger, who was with Andrew and he was having a massive seizure in the doorway of McDonald’s in Stratford and he was looking after Issy after taking her to swimming club! It was confirmed that the tumour had completely regrown and surgery number two was booked for 20th November 2013. Andrew’s second surgery was done partially awake, again it was a massive success and then back to the dreaded chemo, a new type, which was more difficult to manage as it had diet restrictions and was harder to recover from than the previous chemotherapy. On the fourth round Andrew had a massive allergic reaction to it which meant we had to withdraw part of it. This was a huge blow to us as we knew that our options were running out. He continued with the chemo, but omitting the part that gave him the allergic

reaction. By the end of this round Andrew had lost his speech again - this was the now all too familiar sign that things weren’t as they should be. A few days later it was confirmed the tumour had regrown again, it had now gone deeper and would be inoperable. It would cause too much damage. The following week we went to see Andrew’s oncologist and she confirmed that it would probably do too much damage if they operated. In his usual style, we left that meeting and Andrew got straight onto his surgeon and asked if he could take it out! Surgery number three was booked for mid August 2014. We were given permission to go on, probably, the most special holiday of our lives. The Children were excited about going away, we all needed a break and time to take stock of what was happening and to make more memories as we both knew that time was running out. We meet every year with some very special friends and we all knew that this could potentially be Andrew’s last one. He needed more rest, his mind wasn’t as quick as it used to be and his memory was fading but he was still as funny and loving as he always was. I remember so well being sat with Andrew in Intensive Care after his surgery, he was talking (this was always a massive risk area), he was funny, loving and as gorgeous as ever! He was so funny obtaining the full life history of his nurses, providing advice on marriage and even how to cope being a working mum! But on his second day, I instantly noticed an enormous difference in Andrew, he just slept. Everyone thought this was normal, I don’t know why, but I just knew it wasn’t. He came home and slept most of the time. He tried working a week after surgery but quickly realised that his brain wasn’t up to it this time. We went back to see the surgeon, who still thought the extreme tiredness was from surgery. As Andrew’s tiredness became more aggressive, I knew I needed to get a second opinion. I took Andrew to London and the minute I saw the sympathetic look on the oncologists face, it was confirmed for me. Another scan, quickly confirmed there was nothing else they could do. My beautiful, bright, loving, gregarious, quick thinking husband would lose all his ability to think for himself - these were the words Andrew’s surgeon used, he too, was heartbroken as they had formed a great friendship over time and he was

always so in awe of Andrew’s ability to cope and to survive this illness, defying all the odds.

would always smile and wave and even give them kisses.

From that moment on it felt like all I had to do was make decisions and all of them on Andrew’s behalf! We had all our financial affairs in order but as Andrew wasn’t ever going to die, we had never discussed what would happen at the end. We really thought we would have more time when it got to this stage to talk about what he wanted. Nothing can ever prepare you for the sickening feeling of losing control of this dreadful cancer. It was at this point that I was offered a visit from a nurse from Shipston Home Nursing. I just wasn’t ready for this. We bumbled our way through the weekend, with the help of Andrew’s parents and my family.

After one particularly bad night, it was suggested Andrew could go into a Hospice. Again, a total fear and panic takes over, I just wasn’t ready for it! Everything was moving so fast. I went to look at the hospice with Andrew’s parents and sister and we all agreed it wasn’t the right place for him but were also unsure whether we had other options.

It then became obvious to me that I was going to have to do what no mother should ever have to do: I had to tell my three beautiful children, that their Daddy was dying and there was nothing else we could do to save him and keep him with us. It was heart-breaking, they were so brave and so loving. It was the hardest moment of my life and utterly devastating. Andrew’s health was rapidly deteriorating by the hour, and I quickly realised I needed help. It was so hard, as I felt like I was failing Andrew by not being able to care for him myself, I enjoyed looking after him, any loving wife would, but my three children needed me more now than ever. I couldn’t sleep as Andrew was uncomfortable and I spent all day looking after him, I was exhausted. The next day Kate Hardwick, a nurse for SHN, came into my home and was amazing, she took total control of the situation in a loving and kind way, but still treating Andrew with the utmost respect. All my anxieties ebbed away instantly and all I wanted to do was hug this incredible woman that had come into our lives. This enabled me and my children to have the best quality time with Andrew we could have hoped for. His hospital bed was next to ours and we would watch movies together, do homework on the bed next to him and we even had George’s 8th birthday party in there! Kate came back the next day and brought another lovely nurse with her, they were like little angels, appearing when I most needed them. They did the basics such as washing, shaving, moving Andrew around so he didn’t get sores, massage and checking Andrew’s pain levels. I do really believe that he enjoyed them being there, he

As always, I discussed every nightmare of this journey with these lovely nurses that came to my home 2 or 3 times a day, agonising over what I should do next, listening to the their gentle words. They offered to come and sit with Andrew at night while I slept, this was imperative to my health and ability to hold it all together. I looked forward to the time they arrived, loved the peace and calm they brought with them and had total trust that they would look after my darling husband like I would. We managed a few nights like this then Andrew’s breathing deteriorated and the moment I could detect fear in my children eyes was the moment I knew I had to move Andrew, but where? I couldn’t bear the thought of me not being able to be with him all the time, I didn’t want him left for one moment, the tumour had changed him quite dramatically now and I didn’t want him to be scared. It was the hardest and most important decision of my life. I discussed my feelings with Janet Oakey at length that night and the following day Janet offered the services of her nurses to look after Andrew at night in the Ellen Badger Hospital in Shipston. I think I sobbed with relief, it was the best possible answer to the most horrendous situation. The day Andrew was moved from our family home, was utterly traumatic and the one I dreaded more than anything else. Again, made easier with the love and support of the Shipston Home Nurses. They nursed Andrew every night from 10pm until 6am. These wonderful, kind ladies talked me through each stage of the last few days and were a constant confidant for me and our whole family. Andrew was in the Ellen Badger Hospital for one week before losing his extraordinarily brave battle on Wednesday 8th October 2014, aged 46. Sharon Bygate

Shipston Home Nursing visits Sheldon’s Wine Cellars Photo: Mark Williamson, Stratford Herald

Historic Sheldon’s Wine Cellars has been part of Shipston just about forever and we were delighted to be invited for a tasting in their Cellars in October. Having become our sponsor during 2014 we have been acquainting our palates with their range of wines. The shop is a real treasure trove of wines from all across the globe with prices to suit every pocket. 2015 is going to be an exciting year for Sheldon’s. As well as the addition of a fine wine room, new offices and a new food outlet, they have created a personalised SHN label which will go on to their Red and White House Burgundy. For every bottle that is sold, 25p will be donated to SHN. Peter Creek, Director at Sheldon’s feels the association with SHN is hugely important on a community level and also the fact that the

charity is benefiting on a longer term basis is such a bonus. It’s something that we can all be part of.

Thank you Betty Holden Betty has been painting churches, landscapes and the Poppy Fields to raise funds for SHN since 2006. This was the first year that we started working together. Twenty-one of Betty’s beautiful artworks have been used to print Christmas cards and Notelets. This has generated an enormous amount of money for SHN. The Trustees and I are grateful to Betty for being so extremely supportive, in giving a huge amount of her time and talent. Betty decided that last year was her swansong. Once again thank you for your dedication to the Charity. Betty’s late husband Martin, examined the SHN accounts, for many years. Chris Owen was extremely grateful for his help. www.shipstonhomenursing.co.uk

A Tribute to Shipston Home Nursing Audrey May Vickers passed away peacefully at 7.45pm on Saturday, July 26th, 2014. Our Mother, Audrey, 98 years old when she died, lead a remarkable and hugely interesting life. Unsurprisingly, when Audrey was informed by her wonderful colorectal consultant at Warwick Hospital, Ms Karen Busby, that she was suffering from terminal bowel cancer, her typical reaction was to request surgery. On reflection, to our considerable relief, she decided not to undergo an operation which she requested and was offered, but rather to spend her last days at home. The attention and dedication of Dr.Jo Piercy and support from our local District Nursing team were unstinting. Audrey’s decision to be nursed at home was largely due to the availability of care

provided by Shipston Home Nursing. All these dedicated professionals worked as a seamless team providing constant care and support until her death. The expert nursing and loving care and attention given to Audrey from the SHN nurses’ first visit until after her passing were remarkable. It was very reassuring to her that a small number of nurses were dedicated to her care rather than a succession of different faces. From their early morning visits to evening calls and, in the final days, overnight oversight ensured that Audrey had every possible care and comfort. Nothing was too much trouble. Extra personal and medical equipment appeared as if from nowhere!

All this was consistent with what we had previously heard about SHN’s service - beyond this were the kindness and affection shown to Audrey. Her nurses listened to and chatted with her. Audrey was treated with dignity and she was nursed with loving care. Throughout the final days Andrew and I, as Audrey’s son and daughter, had ongoing support from the nursing team. They told us what to expect and were kindness and reassurance itself. Shipston Home Nurses are VERY special people and have our enduring, heartfelt thanks. Andrew Vickers and Madeleine Wall

Another brilliant year for the Restaurant Scheme, which has achieved an astonishing total of £5, 025 for the year ending December 2014. This wonderful amount is entirely due to the efforts of my heroes and heroines of the Scheme - in the photo gallery above. So ... this is my opportunity to pay tribute to them - their The Farriers Arms - Todenham Horse & Groom - Bourton-on-the-Hill staff and their customers. Thank you - for your cheerful willingness as supporters of the Scheme, and your innate understanding and appreciation of the important work SHN nurses provide for our community. To run the Scheme is one thing, but to take it to the heart of your business is another, and for this I am truly grateful. Whilst writing, may I take this opportunity to ask for help in expanding the Scheme, possibly to the north of our area. It’s an established and rewarding part of the SHN fundraising effort, not least because it helps to inform and promote the work of the charity. Please let Rebecca know if you have time, and are willing to give it a go. With my very best wishes Sarah Scotter

The Tartan Fling Ginny Kettle The Townsend Hall in Shipston-on-Stour once again played host to the annual teenage reeling party, the Tartan Fling, on April 12th 2014, and raised £1,950 for SHN in the process. Chief fundraiser at SHN, Rebecca Mawle, delighted with the contribution, described the evening as ‘an extraordinary success’. A total of 205 teenagers gathered to dance the night away in the Tartan-rug bedecked venue, accompanied by reeling party specialists, the George Buchanan band. On arrival guests were treated to a sit-down supper supplied by the 10-strong committee under its catering expert, Hester Sale. Lasagne, bread and salad were served on crockery kindly donated for the evening by Gill Judd Catering. Supper was followed by a programme of 8 reels including the Gay Gordons, the Dashing White Sergeant and the Eightsome. The beneficiaries of the evening were not just the party-goers, as the Warwickshire Air Ambulance Service as well as SHN received a cheque for £1,950 after the event. “It is a happy occasion, where teenagers get together with friends and improve their reeling skills, whilst also helping to raise money for two very worthy causes. Eagerly anticipated by the teenagers every year, the 2014 ‘Fling’ luckily did not seem to disappoint.”

Tower and navigated a complex route through stunning scenery. After many adventures and a few stops for mechanical breakdowns, most arrived safely an hour later at The Norman Knight in Whichford. The pub made the intrepid drivers and their navigators most welcome. After some much needed refreshment the cars set off for more adventures, eventually arriving at their final destination, a lunchtime picnic at Longbourn Farm. What made the event special was that many participants dressed in the era of the cars. This ranged from 1970’s hippies to prewar elegance and all periods in between. Some even went as far as having a picnic to match the year of their car, complete with Gramophones, Candelabras and Fish Paste sandwiches! Thanks must go to the Broadway Tower Cafe and The Norman Knight, who kindly donated £1 a head to SHN for providing the much appreciated refreshments. Special thanks go to Mark and Belinda Roberts of Longbourn Farm who allowed us to use their lawns for the picnics, in a beautiful setting overlooking the Warwickshire countryside, which made the day particularly special. The perfect day was rounded off by a highly competitive and fun autotest that challenged the driver’s skill. It was eventually won by Philip Salt closely followed by Tim De La Fosse with Caroline Salt in third place. All the participants thoroughly enjoyed their day and hope that it will be repeated next year. A big thank you to Robbie Cleave who cycled to France raising £1,020 for SHN. Following is his account of the journey. “Firstly, I would like to say a massive thank you for helping me raise a huge amount of money for SHN. We managed to achieve over my target of £1,000! Next I would just like to inform you that I did manage to finish the bike ride in Bordeaux, and except for a short ferry across the pond I cycled the whole way! We managed to complete the journey in seven days. One night we cycled until 3am to get to our campsite only to find it closed. The trip started off badly, with two flat tyres, a pannier rack coming off and some brakes crippling a tyre, but fortunately my bike was fine and I continued at a fast pace, much to the dismay of my partner. As we reached the supposedly sunny France we encountered rain and showers and no sun at all, this continued for five days. We were meant to start cycling at 8 o’clock every morning but these plans were aborted when we found ourselves surrounded by large puddles every morning. This meant we never arrived at our campsite before 9 o’clock in the evening, which meant no dinner and having to put our tent up in the dark on wet ground. Luckily as we reached the coast the weather cleared up nicely before the aftermath of the hurricane hit! Bringing even worse weather than before, still we soldiered on and managed to do 170 miles in the last two days as we just wanted to go home by then. We finished off with a night in Cap Ferret, and thought we deserved a pint or two! We arrived at Bordeaux broken men, and agreed never to set foot on a bicycle again. Thank you again for all of your generous donations.” Robbie Cleave GOLF DAY AT TADMARTON A beautiful day in September, the Golf day was held at Tadmarton Heath Golf Club. The 11 teams teed off in glorious sunshine and set off on their

ROTARY CLUB OF SHIPSTON-ON-STOUR Firstly, I sincerely apologise to all the Rotary Club Members that I did not edit in the 2014 Newsletter, the generous donation that SHN was given and I received in 2013 of £250. Many thanks to you all for your continual support, it is truly appreciated. In 2014 I have received an additional cheque for £250 from the Rotarians and once again the Trustees and I are so grateful for your support, many, many thanks. The Warwickshire Open Studios fortnight held at Richard Harvey’s raised £52. Many thanks to all of the people who came and visited this wonderful exhibition and donated to SHN and the Poppy Appeal. Ebrington Primary School organised a marvellous open garden and tea party at Compton Scorpion Manor. We advertised this lovely event and were given £250 as a donation from their very successful afternoons fundraising for the local school. Many thanks to Olive Burrows and her terrific team of bakers at Ettington, for their cake and biscuit making, which the Ebrington team sold for their delicious teas. Bob and Shirley Large from Little Wolford kindly gave a donation of £50. They received this from the BBC Film Unit for using their drive whilst filming at The Manor in the village. In the event the BBC didn’t use the drive but Bob and Shirley did think of the Charity. Many thanks! Shipston Angling Club generously donated £300 after their successful fishing day. Many thanks to you all. Mrs Julie Digweed from Stretton-on-Fosse sent a cheque for £312 which was raised by eight local pubs playing Domino’s. The winning team was The Plough at Stretton-on-Fosse. Many thanks to all concerned for supporting SHN and congratulations to The Plough!

Andrew Vickers local to Shipston has been a supporter of SHN for many years. Our Nurses looked after his Mother Audrey May Vickers and Andrew kindly decided to raise funds for SHN, in memory of Audrey. I have received many touching letters from friends of Audrey’s who held her in high esteem and with fond memories. The donations have raised £605. Many thanks to Miss P. Lesley, Mr R.Illingworth, Mrs E. Boddington, Mr S. Peters, Mr and Mrs A.Chattington, Mr and Mrs I.Potts, Mrs E.Henshall, Mrs S.Roberts, Mr R.Macfarlane, Mr and Mrs N. Peebles, Mr P. Fothergill, Mr B. A Hindley, the Hirsts and Mr J.E.Burt. Comments from friends:How they appreciated your help in their time of sadness. Please accept the enclosed cheque as a token of my appreciation of all the care and love you and your staff showed to Mrs Audrey Vickers at the latter stages of her earthly pilgrimage. In loving memory of a very dear friend of many years. Thank you to Sue Mole and her Dominoes team who play at The Fuzzy Duck, Armscote. The Fuzzy Duck kindly provided refreshments for the teams for which everyone makes a £1 contribution each week and they have raised £310 for the Charity. Many thanks to you all.

Thank you to Hilary Bryan who kindly loans all her china, kitchen wares and cutlery for many events free of charge. This all helps to make our profits greater. Many thanks Hilary. Thank you to Emma Morris who through the year has donated many lovely cakes, biscuits and soup free of charge for lots of different events. Your support and generosity is truly appreciated.

Shipston Home Nursing News

The Nursing report Janet Oakey The Shipston Home Nursing team had a busy 2014. We nursed fifty-three patients in their homes across the south Warwickshire area. Of those fifty-three patients, thirty-eight had a diagnosis of cancer whilst the remaining fifteen had long term conditions such as heart failure, renal failure and chronic chest problems. In total the team of thirteen Registered General Nurses delivered 922.5 hours of day care and 730 hours of night care. We continue to work closely with the local GP surgeries, district nursing teams and hospices and would like to say a big thank you for their continued support. Our thanks also goes to all the families and friends of our patients, past and present, who always make us feel so welcome when we visit their homes.

“I thank you again for the way you looked after Olive in her last days by your lovely caring Nurses”

The SHN Nurses at Shirley Carr’s leaving party.

“Thank you for the loving care and attention given to him and for making his life comfortable during his last few weeks”

“All good wishes for you and the marvellous Charity”

Finally the team would like to wish you all a happy and healthy New Year.

Many thanks Suzie Suzie Coyte finished working with me in February 2014, as she was needed to help Tom and Edward, her sons, with their new business. Suzie had been coming to my home for many years, working one day a week for SHN. I would like to thank her for all her input and huge support over the years whenever I needed her, over and above the working hours. We are really great friends and it was special to have Suzie by my side during that time. We had a lot of fun working together for SHN, raising funds and organising different events. If there is a large event, and I need some voluntary help, Suzie if she is available, will always be there to help. Debbie Foster is now working 15 hours a week, managing the social media and other aspects of fundraising.

SHN Supporters, Paddock Farm, open new shop in Brailes Great news for the people of Brailes and surrounding villages; Nick and Jon Francis are setting up a new Paddock Farm butchery in the village. The shop will be on the site of Frank Barwick’s former shop on the High Street and will offer their renowned Tamworth pork alongside local beef, lamb and lots more. The new shop will see the continuation of a butcher in the village following the retirement of Frank Barwick who has been serving the village for 25 years.

Nick and Jon are looking forward to meeting everyone from within the village and welcoming existing customers from further afield.

Paddock Farm produce is already supplied to top chefs around the country – from Raymond Blanc’s restaurant in Oxfordshire to Fergus Henderson’s St John in London – supplying 35 Michelin stars. Their herd of Tamworth pigs are only kept three miles down the road so there will be minimal food miles. www.shipstonhomenursing.co.uk

Shipston Home Nursing News

Chairman’s report Clive Irwin Another year starts and yet again there is mixed news from around the world which can either inspire or cause often gloomy thoughts.

Thanks to all our supporters and ever generous sponsors, we once again enjoyed a very successful Ball at the home of Peter and Anthea Whale, and acknowledge their efforts and generosity to help create a great night out which also proved a great fund raiser. The food as ever was excellent , and the live band certainly got most people on the dance floor for a long time! Just after the Ball, my wife and I were lucky to go on a touring holiday to Thailand, starting in Bangkok. The highlights of the tour were a bit strange – the War cemetery at Bridge on the River Kwai with 7000 war graves of young men who perished building a railway, and a stay on a beachfront hotel at Khao Lak which was one of the areas devastated by the Tsunami 10 years ago (yes!, that long). Trips abroad February 2015

like this bring home how lucky we are in this country to have the standard of living we do, and the public services we enjoy.

steadily increase – we are an ageing population, and many people are living longer with some times chronic and incurable conditions.

You would not necessarily think this reading our newspapers or watching the TV with endless repetition of the A and E crisis and failed targets!! The vast majority of our patients in hospitals do experience high quality care, but the speed of turnaround now often means the little things that make it an excellent experience can slip away.

Access to the services of the Charity are often via District Nurses or Family doctors, but can also be achieved via self referral or via friends/ relatives.

To this end, the community support for people who need help to return home, or into a safe care home type environment, becomes increasingly important as we try to get folk out of the acute hospital situation, often where they would rather not be. The Charity continues to review and care for patients with cancer and other terminal illnesses in the latter stages of their lives. We have recently looked at increasing the remit of the Charity to support bereaved relatives and carers immediately after a loved ones death, and have also taken on more permanent members of staff to share the workload we expect to

29

The ongoing support and enthusiasm of our many fundraisers with such a wide range of projects is really encouraging, and the Trustees are very grateful for any and all the contributions made to support our nurses deliver their special and much needed care when and where the patient needs it most. Within our own ranks, time and people move on. I would like to acknowledge the enormous efforts of Shirley Carr in her role as nurse and coordinator for the Charity and its patients, There are many families and patients who have benefitted from her quietly efficient, calm and caring approach. With all best wishes for 2015. Dr Clive Irwin Chairman

Treasurer’s report Christopher Owen We are now in our eighteenth year of providing free nursing for the terminally ill at home in Wellesbourne, Kineton and Shipston-on-Stour area in the South Warwickshire area. scheme is being set up.

We managed to cover our costs for the financial year ended 30 June 2014, and made a surplus of £42,904.

The dedicated experienced and professional team of Trustees, Nurses and Fundraisers are continuing to work hard to ensure the longevity of the service.

We received £ 65,220 mainly from South Warwickshire Primary Health Care Trust for the continuing care by our nurses of NHS patients leaving hospital and referred to SHN. Fundraising events contributed £80,259 after event costs. We have adequate reserves to cover operating costs, short term invested in COIF Charity Funds. We need £180,000 this financial year to 30 June 2015 to cover our outgoings. Developments Our fundraising team are

working hard to attract support from businesses in the area and welcome any leads in this respect. Conversion to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation is in progress. Our services are soon to include bereavement counselling. An auto-enrolment pension

I would urge supporters of Shipston Home Nursing to consider making provision in their wills in favour of the charity and life time gifts of shares, property etc, and if assistance is needed I am on hand for guidance. Keep up the good work and thanks for your support and your continuing efforts. Any ideas for Trust, legacy and other income or comments please ring Chris Owen, Treasurer on 01608 685095 or email ci.owen01@gmail.com

A Positive Change for the Future Shipston Home Nursing will shortly deliver its services as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation instead of via an unincorporated charity. In making this change the trustees have been ably guided by Mark Lewis a solicitor specialising in charity law with Lodders of Stratford-upon-Avon. The law was changed recently to allow the incorporation of charities as Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIO) in order to give some of the benefits enjoyed by but without some of the burdens of a company. This change in the law was made for a number of reasons but one concern of many people who are asked to become a trustee of an unincorporated charity is the potential personal liability that comes with being a trustee. It is recognised that insurance is not a complete answer to this concern. The result has been reluctance on the part of some to become trustees of unincorporated charities. Formation of a CIO will overcome that concern and ensure that Shipston Home Nursing will continue to attract the calibre of trustee required to run the charity effectively in the future.

www.shipstonhomenursing.co.uk

All CIOs are registered with the Charity Commission and must adhere to the rules and regulations applicable to CIOs. The Charity Commission oversee CIO in the same way as unincorporated charities are overseen. Importantly the present trustees and the staff and nurses of Shipston Home Nursing as it is now constituted will continue to run the new CIO and to deliver the same services as have been delivered in the past. In practice those using the service will see no change to the way in which the charity is run. Richard Lloyd Trustee

WOLF Run donates £10K The WOLF Run was set up by Charlie Moreton and Karen Archer four years ago on a family farm in Warwickshire. An innovative, challenging 10k, the Run tests strength, ingenuity and determination with a series of natural and man-made obstacles and off-road running trails. Runners climb huge fallen trees, wade through mud and water, tackle 40 foot cargo nets and swim lakes, before warming up at a post-Run party with music, food and WOLF beer! There are now four WOLF Runs a year, two in Warwickshire and two at Stanford Hall in Leicestershire, each welcoming up to 6,000 runners over each weekend. Many of the runners fundraise by taking part and finding sponsorship, and the WOLF Run also supports both local and national charities, hosting a guest charity at each event and donating a percentage of their profits. Shipston Home Nursing was an obvious choice for Charlie and Karen when it came to choosing a local charity to support as Karen’s father was nursed by SHN through the final stages of cancer. With their support, he was able to spend his last days in his home surrounded by his family and in comfortable, familiar surroundings instead of in a hospital. SHN do simply incredible work and the WOLF Run is delighted to be able to support them. If you would like to fundraise for SHN by tackling the WOLF Run, please visit www.thewolfrun.com. A massive thank you to Karen and Charlie for your wonderful generosity!

Our Nurses at their best Jackie Ramsey’s partner Jim Warren was nursed by Kate Hardwicke. This is Jackie’s memory of that very special, but sad time. his date with his favourite Nurse was due! Jim needed to talk honestly about how his cancer would progress, he had many conversations with Kate, in which it was explained the treatment he would receive and how he would be looked after when his time came. This was immense comfort to Jim and he was glad of the direct talking that he received. The honesty was a comfort to him.

Jim passed peacefully on April 12th 2014 aged 56. He had metastic colorectal carcinoma. The day we were told was unbearable and in those few seconds we knew that our lives would never be the same again. But the strong man in front of me took it on the chin, and if you knew Jim well, you would expect nothing less. We knew we had to live with the cancer and look on the bright side and cherish the moments.

As the months progressed Jim became frustrated with the limitations of what he could do. He would laugh with his children about taking hours to put a slipper on, but with Kate he could allow the pessimism to seep out. Jim’s dignity was so important and he was allowed to keep that until the end. Kate and Jim decided a plan of action to keep his self-respect and pride, but also allowed for the care which had to be provided. Kate became a councillor to us all, not only helping Jim through the dark days, but also me as his partner. I still had to work and knowing that Jim was seeing Kate, helped me through the day.

Jim was born locally on Tidmington Farm, near Shipston-on-Stour. His love of the farm, wildlife and nature was outstanding. His work was also a passion as an experienced tool maker in and around the area. He became an encyclopaedia of knowledge and experience, passing on his know how to friends and family. He was a very sociable man, believing you had to laugh at yourself, with witty banter being the order of the day. He was a loyal and trustworthy friend to many. He was a brilliant role model and Father to his children and stepdaughter. Always instilling good morals and values. His fierce strength was inspirational, never losing resolve or dignity, never giving up the fight.

Until you live this journey you don’t realise the support needed. Shipston Home Nursing provided this and more. We have not only respect and admiration for Kate but the Charity as a whole. You are an amazing Charity who have gone above and beyond, to look after the most special man.

Jim and I both realised we needed assistance on this journey, but we found so much more! Shipston Home Nursing gave us support, reassurance, the strength to continue and more than that we found friendship. I know it was of major comfort to Jim’s children that he always looked forward to seeing Kate and it would perk him up massively to know www.shipstonhomenursing.co.uk

On behalf of myself, our family and Jim, I thank you. You are angels and will be forever in our hearts. Jackie Ramsey
