Privacy & the Internet Be Careful What You Post on the Internet! Have you ever searched for your name on Google, Bing or Yahoo, and found results related to you? The internet world is growing on a daily basis. The world’s governments, industries and citizens provide many of their services online, and so do universities, banks, private companies and others. Many people are passively sharing their private information – from name and birthday to specific details about where they are going– on the internet by creating profiles on social media websites, blogs, forums, or purchasing products online and more. No matter how private your profile is, there is still a chance that some unwanted pictures or information are publically out there on the internet. Too much of your personal information being available on the internet is extremely dangerous for your safety. You need to be careful about what you submit online and what websites you visit. There are steps to take that can protect you from identity theft, stalkers, and your information being passed on to third-parties like partners, and advertisers. The most important step is: do not share too much or any personal information online. Always keep in mind that many sites such as Facebook and Google store your information in their database. Every post you left on your wall, comment on a friend’s profile, ‘like’ on a status, invitation to a demonstration, or tag in a video, and even every message between you and a friend is permanently stored. Even if you delete your entire profile from social media sites, your personal information is still stored in their database. People always assume that when they share a piece of information, it is only available to whom they choose to show it to, but that is not always true. Therefore, do not post anything you do not want the world to see, keeping in mind that employers around the world have been looking up their employees’ information online to decide whether to hire them or not.

46

Almost all online service providers have privacy policies the user has to agree on before becoming a member. A privacy policy is usually a long and complicated document using terms sometimes only lawyers understand. Although many major sites have been making their privacy policies more clear, there are still many websites with sneaky and unclear language in their policies. Nevertheless, reading the privacy policy is important because you might be able to decide whether to trust a site or not, and it helps you understand what to do with privacy controls you have. Facebook, Google and other companies change their privacy policies constantly without getting your permission; they only inform you. Their new policies almost always make your personal information less personal and private by adding new policies which makes some information public by default rather than private. Some websites, for instance, have sections in

47

their privacy policies which give them the right to publish any photo you post; not only would it be absurd to, for example, find your picture printed on some poster in the future, imagine the number of artists and photographers submitting their art online and how easy it is for such large corporate companies to take advantage. Most websites you use have settings for privacy that you can edit to make your online experience safer from the public (with limits). Some of those settings allow you to make your profile private and limited to certain people. Moreover, many web browsers, like Firefox and Chrome, warn you before you enter any suspicious site, and also allow you to stop some sites from tracking your personal information. Nonetheless, many of your personal information is already permanently out there and even if you are safe from stalkers, identity theft, and other threats, large corporate companies have the information you gave them stored.

So what?

eb c fa

Facebook, Google, Microsoft, MSN and others are some of the most used services online that make most of their money through advertising. These companies track you and your personal information like your race, religion, address, websites you visit , and pages you like on Facebook and other social media using what is called a cookie or other tracking mechanisms, which can and should constantly be deleted from your browser. These companies then sell that information to other companies so they target advertisements specifically for you. This is known as behavioral targeting or tracking. The founder of Facebook said, People have really gotten comfortable not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people. That social norm is just something that has evolved over time. The more information we share on the internet, the easier we make it for companies to compile our information and sell it to make billions. If you like a page for pasta lovers on Facebook or searched pasta on Yahoo and your location is specified as Nablus; expect to see an advertisement of the closest Italian restaurant to you in Nablus. Similarly, if you search for a certain term on Google, the advertisements will be related. So, where’s the harm in that? 48

Facebook made $3.2 billion in advertising revenue last year alone, yet Facebook sells no products, it only sells your information to companies for advertising. Likewise, Google makes about ten times that money with $36.5 billion in advertising revenue. Of course, hundreds of other companies do the same. Some of the information you share online that is being tracked determines whether you are approved to get insurance, a job, a credit card, a visa to visit a country, and many other things. Words you search for that are ‘suspicious’ like researching something illegal or violent (which can always be used for academic reasons) can be used against you in many cases. Information online has been used against people in courts worldwide to determine who gets custody over a child, or if someone is guilty or not. Governments have convicted peook ple worldwide based on their online activities and personal bo information. Moreover, you may not get approved for a credit card because of your race, location, and the websites you visit. In most cases in the internet you cannot remove the advertisements displayed to you on websites, or even pick the kind of advertisements you would like to receive while they are all over the internet. These advertisements affect your decisions as a consumer, especially because they are very specific to the data companies compile about you. Getting an advertisement limited to your searches and likes on Facebook limit your horizon in learning about other products and learning about new innovations. For the internet to be safer and for companies and governments to stop taking advantage of our personal information, there should be an international privacy law. This law should require websites to have your consent before tracking, saving, and using any of your information along with letting you know how your information is being used. Websites should have to make their privacy policies clearer and get your consent before changing anything; they should also be required to make everything private by default rather than public forcing you to edit the settings to make your information private. Websites should have to tell you if there is any breach of your information. In addition to that, you should be able to obtain a report from any online service in order to know all the information they have about you. Most importantly though, you should have the right to permanently delete any piece of information you have added or someone else has added about you. For a better and safer internet experience there has to be a guarantee of your rights online and a limit to what companies do with your data. 49

Video Games Build Skills! Video games are highly popular among youth today. A video game is a game that is electronic and interactive, where a player uses a controller or joystick to control a character. Video games are played on a computer or a gaming system connected to a television, like the PlayStation or Xbox, or on a portable handheld device like the Game Boy or PSP. Recently, games on smartphones and tablets such as the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy have been gaining popularity. Most people assume that video games are a waste of time, highly addictive, not beneficial and affect a person’s life negatively, and some even blame video games for the violent tendencies a player has. But can you really blame a video game if a person, specifically a child, doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong and acts violently, or is that the parent’s responsibility? In spite of this prevailing perception, it has been proven that video games, when played in moderation, can be very educational, useful and even healthy to the player whether the player is a child or an adult. All video games have ratings on them based on which age group the game is appropriate for. Many video games require skillful thinking such as strategy and adventure video games. Video games with a puzzle to solve or a mission to accomplish like Limbo, a game which truly is a masterpiece, can teach logical thinking skills. Many video games are based on facts and inspired by true stories, and can even teach the player some history, such as Assassin’s creed. Other video games help the player relieve stress and even build the player’s confidence. A video game player could feel relieved after being successful in beating the opponent or finishing a level or stage in a game, and once they reach the end they gain higher self-esteem.

52

Furthermore, it is said that video games can be healthy competition for children and help them gain social skills. Moreover, they can help players develop better teamwork skills in multiplayer or network games. Violent games for adults and what is called mindless games, or games that do not require skillful thinking, help relieve stress the most, mainly because they are entertaining and because players let out their frustration while playing a game or get positive results without putting in too much effort. Other benefits include helping the player increase concentration and hand-eye coordination. This way the player improves his vision and reflexes. A study showed that surgical doctors who played video games had better surgical accuracy and skills. Some experts even say that video games could exercise the brain and eyes and are effective in preventing what is called progressive illnesses like Alzheimer’s disease from affecting the player. Video games can increase creativity and imagination and open the horizon of the player’s mind. A video game may even motivate a player to be more artistic and draw or write a creative story or plot. Some video games help children study in school; there are educational video games specifically for teaching languages, mathematics, and science that are very effective with children. These video games can help children in memorizing, solving problems, and calculating. Video games are not useless or bad; a little bit of fun, stress relief, and skillful thinking is always useful unless the player over does it and allows their game play to get out of hand. Parents should monitor the games their children play in order to make sure they know the difference between reality and fantasy (in reality there will be consequences for violent acts for example) and between what is right and what is wrong. In conclusion, playing video games in moderation and with limits is important. An adult who plays video games should have self-discipline and not spend a lot of hours a day on games, especially if they have more important tasks in life.

Workplace Stress Do you stress at work? Unless you have the best job in the world you are probably like the rest of us who suffer from some form of stress at work. It is virtually impossible to avoid, as it is a natural human reaction when you have to handle more than you are used to. There are, however, simple things you can do as an employee or employer to help reduce stress at work which can go along way for the success of a company. When you feel overwhelmed at work, you lose confidence and may become irritable or withdrawn. This can make you less productive and less effective in your job, and make the work seem less rewarding. If you ignore the warning signs of work stress, they can lead to bigger problems. Beyond interfering with job performance and satisfaction, chronic or intense stress can also lead to physical and emotional health problems. Exact causes of stress at work differ from person to person. Common reasons people feel stressed at work include: • Fear of being laid off • Long work hours • Pressure to perform but with no increase in job satisfaction • Tight deadlines When stress at work interferes with your ability to perform in your job, manage your personal life, or adversely impacts your health, it is time to take action. Start by paying attention to your physical and emotional health. When your own needs are taken care of, you are stronger and more resilient to stress. The better you feel, the better equipped you will be to manage work stress without becoming overwhelmed. Simple Rules to Live by Taking care of yourself does not require a total lifestyle change. Even small things can lift your mood, increase your energy, and make you feel like you are back in the driver’s seat. Take things one step at a time, and 54

as you make more positive lifestyle choices, you will soon notice a reduction in your stress levels, both at home and at work. Aerobic exercise (activity that raises your heart rate and makes you sweat) is a hugely effective way to lift your mood, increase energy, sharpen focus, and relax both the mind and body. Low blood sugar can make you feel anxious and irritable, while eating too much can make you lethargic. By eating small but frequent meals throughout the day, you can help your body maintain an even level of blood sugar and avoid these swings in mood.

55

Lack of sleep can leave you vulnerable to even more stress. When you are well-rested, it is much easier to keep your emotional balance, a key factor in coping with job and workplace stress. It is in a manager's best interest to keep stress levels in the workplace to a minimum. Managers can act as positive role models, especially in times of high stress. If a respected manager can remain calm in stressful work situations, it is much easier for his or her employees to also remain calm. Additionally, there are a number of organizational changes that managers and employers can make to reduce workplace stress. These include: • Improve communication. • Provide opportunities for social interaction among employees. • Establish a zero-tolerance policy for harassment. • Make management actions consistent with organizational values. • Provide incentives for good and consistent effort. In Palestine, there are a few companies that offer unique services and solutions which help companies reduce work related stress to fuel growth and sustainability. Their solutions include team building events and fun activities to increase employee morale and interaction. When work stress gets too much, it is important to follow the simple steps provided. As an employer it will help you get the best out of your employee for the better of the company. As an en employee, it will help you improve your productivity, efficiency and certainly your relations outside of work. So relax and do not forget to use that vacation time if you have to. You deserve it.

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, along with many other websites announced their decision to black out (or shut down) for a day—on January 18, 2012. The blackout was in protest of proposed legislations in the United States Congress aimed at limiting online privacy, particularly Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). If passed, these acts would seriously harm the free and open Internet worldwide, not only in the United States. When January, 18, 2012 arrived, many websites like Craigslist.com blacked out their page, while others placed black ribbons on their web pages, like WordPress, and others blacked out their logos and headlines, like Google and Wired.com. In its announcement, Wikipedia proclaimed, “We believe that new proposed laws like SOPA and PIPA, and other similar laws under discussion inside and outside the United States, don’t advance the interests of the general public”. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, made his Facebook status as follows, “… We can't let poorly thought out laws get in the way of the Internet's development. Facebook opposes SOPA and PIPA, and we will continue to oppose any laws that will hurt the Internet. The world today needs political leaders who are pro-internet. We have been working with many of these folks for months on better alternatives to these current proposals. I encourage you to learn more about these issues and tell your congressmen that you want them to be pro-internet…”

How do these bills limit our online freedom? The purpose of these bills is to protect copyright material like movies and music from being copied and to make it harder for some websites to sell or distribute pirated material and other products like fake clothing items or accessories. But many argue that these laws will not accomplish their goal and instead censor the internet. 58

In these bills, there are provisions that hold the websites responsible for users who post links to sites with pirated content. In other words, the owner of a website would be responsible for the users’ posts. If there is a video on Youtube or Vimeo of someone singing a popular song, this could be infringing on copyrights because the person singing most likely didn’t get permission from the production company, and the website can be sued for it. The bills may also require internet providers to block websites for uploading and sharing digital files. Similarly, search engines like Bing, Google, and Yahoo could be stopped from linking to such sites. The U.S. Chief Technology Officer and two colleagues wrote, “While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global internet.” Many worry that these bills may be manipulated and used to censor certain sites for purposes other than the protection of copyright material.

What was the effect of the protest? The blackout protest of major websites spread a lot of awareness of this issue to the world. SOPA is on hold and discussions on it have been delayed. Several senators pulled back their support for these bills and the vote on the PIPA bill was postponed. These bills are far from dead and we should do our best to stop the US government from imposing restrictions on the internet’s freedom, keeping in mind that it is the movie and music industry that truly supports this bill in order to continue to make billions of dollars.

Fleet Management Systems Available in Palestine The Palestinian Internet Service Provider Coolnet has introduced the service of tracking and managing vehicles and fleet operations through GPS (Global Positioning System) tracking and monitoring. To ensure the high level of specialty and superiority, Coolnet is the first company that has introduced the system at these unique specifications and capabilities that you as a client have the right to own and operate on in order to manage your fleet and team to a better more economic and safe venture. GPS tracking was first designed in the 1970s for the United States Department of Defense, in the wake of the successful deployment of the Global Positioning System (GPS) Satellite. During those days, 24 satellites were used to acquire full accuracy and coverage. The GPS technology was not utilized for civilian uses until the 1990s. Technology had by that time started to grow out of the box, and by the year 2000, the system began to operate on a commercial level. One of the most common utilizations of GPS tracking in the commercial and security domains was the fleet management system; by installing a specific chip set, smaller than a mobile carrier SIM card, the satellite system above our heads can monitor, track and direct route and traffic data to centers around the world. Allowing imagination to lead the mind and innovation, specific applications were created to allocate this resource to allow efficient handling and management of vehicles. The fleet management system has become increasingly important in enterprises owning a number of vehicles and managing high volume of traffic including trucking companies, courier and mail services, as well as public transportation networks such as bus and taxi companies. Now the demands of you as a business or organization have evolved, you want something new, a thought track out of the box; you may wish to have some sort of management over your fleet, other than just monitor to-and-fro, this is what Coolnet is working on; remote control over the vehicle immobilizer, specific pilot signals for certain situations. With its new service called CoolTrack, Coolnet is now able to offer a fully web-based fleet management system, operated via simple click and pick commands, allowing full monitoring of vehicular movement, speed, odometer, fuel, oil and even brake caliper level. Coolnet explained that the CoolTrack system is easy to operate, offering all of the above functions within one command screen. It is also easy install through the installation of a miniature device not bigger than the palm of a hand, and easy to configure to suit clients’ exact needs. Coolnet added that the CoolTrack system is affordable, and can be acquired with a simple monthly-based service with no strings attached. 60

Resolution is the amount of detail in an image, so higher resolution means more image detail. The measuring unit of resolution in pictures is known as the pixel or the picture element. A pixel is the smallest point or dot that can be represented in a digital image. The more pixels or dots there are in a digital or printed image, the higher the quality and resolution or the more it looks like the original. A megapixel, which most digital cameras today use as a measuring unit, is made of a million pixels. For even better resolution in digital and printed images, photographers combine 5 to 10 megapixel images to produce a gigapixel image. A gigapixel image is made of billions of pixels of information. More precisely, a gigapixel is 150 times more detailed than an average megapixel image or has 1,024 times the information of a 1 megapixel image. An image with such high resolution is usually produced by capturing hundreds and maybe thousands of digital images, usually between 10 and 20 megapixels, of a scene and stitching them together. The stitching is made using software such as Adobe’s Photoshop to create one large gigapixel image or a panorama. A panorama is a picture which covers a wider field than a camera lens can cover.

62

Taking the images for the panoramic gigapixel image requires very high precision, which is why using a computer controlled robotic panoramic head is best. The robotic head also makes the procedure easier. The robotic head serves as a camera holder or mounting tripod that automatically moves the camera and releases the shutter. The robotic head can move 360 degrees. This procedure can take up to hours, and one of the biggest difficulties is handling the inconsistency in lighting between the pictures captured. The Gigapan is one of the most affordable, fastest, and lightest panoramic robotic headswhich accept any camera you own. Gigapixel technology is helpful for artists, photographers, historians, physicists, scientists, governments, healthcare providers, investigators, viewers of satellite images (like Google Earth) and more. The Gigapixel image is useful for images of scenes where the person viewing the image would want to zoom in and see the details. A gigapixel image of landscapes, cities, theatres, opera houses, music concerts, stadiums, sports arenas, architecture, ancient ruins, parks, and more is the best way to virtually view such places. High detail and resolution in digital and printed images help advancement in many fields; scientists can now use gigapixel images to further study organs and planets, investigators can investigate a crime scene with more detail, and an archeologist can now preserve an image of an artifact or monument and show it in a museum and much more. The world’s largest image, available for view online, is a 70 gigapixel image (or 71,303,841,000 pixels) of Budapest in Hungary. You can also find full size and zoomable gigapixel images of many cities worldwide including Dubai, Paris, Vancouver, Vienna, Madrid and many more.

The

Kindle Family

A million books in the palm of your hand

Amazon is the world’s largest online shop.It started as an online bookstore, but later expanded to sell CDs, DVDs, electronics, food, toys, music downloads, video games and many other products. Amazon targets primarily the United States market, but it provides international shipping to some of its products. The Kindle is an easy to use electronic book reader which allows the user to shop, browse, download and read digital media using a wireless internet connection. This includes e-books, newspapers, magazines and more, for which you can add bookmarks and annotations. In addition to reading, you can use the Kindle to listen to music and MP3s while reading. The Kindle also has a built in dictionary and a web browser feature which enables you to check your email and surf the internet. Amazon offers over a million books, newspapers, audio books, documents, magazines and games, including books exclusive to the Kindle. Amazonalso offers thousands of books to borrow from local libraries’ websites for free (if the library offers digital services). Any of the books released prior to the year 1923, such as Shakespeare’s novels, are available for free because they are Out-of-Copyright. 64

You can read the first couple of chapters of a book that interests you to judge the book as a sample for free before you decide to buy it. You can also publish your own books on Amazon using the Kindle Publish service.Furthermore, once you buy a book you can also read it on some smartphones, tablets, computers and web browsers using the free Kindle Applications. One minor issue with the Kindle is that it does not read all Arabic text formats; it reads only .AZW files and PDF formats. However, you can convert the text to a series of

available online. The Amazon Kindle Family has five members: the Kindle, Kindle touch, Kindle Keyboard (the oldest), Kindle DX and the Kindle Fire. So what are the differences between all these kindle e-readers, you may ask?

Display The Kindle Family, with the exception of the Kindle Fire, uses themost advanced “E Ink pearl” display screen.TheE Ink screen displays clear text and images and reads like it’s a paper or book page. Due to the high contrast in the 6 inch screen, you can read your e-book without suffering from eye strain even after long periods of reading(the Kindle DX screen is 9.7 inches).Unlike LCD screens, reading in bright sunlight is just like reading indoors; you get no glare from the reflection of the sun on the screen. On the other hand, the Kindle Fire uses a 7 inch LCD full color “InPlane Switching(IPS)” touch screen. With the huge book selection offered by Amazon, the Kindle should have high storage capacity. The Kindle has 2GB of storage, which is equivalent to 1,400 books. The Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard, and Kindle DX all 65

have 4GB of storage or what is equivalent to 3,500 books. On the other hand, the Kindle Fire has 8GB of storage on device, which is equivalent to 80 apps along with 6,000 books, or 10 movies, or 800 songs. It should be pointed out, however, that you never have to worry about running out of space or even losing any of your books because all Kindle devices offer free cloud storage for all Amazon content which is automatically backed up.

Battery Life Battery life varies depending on whether you keep the wireless on or off. If you read half an hour a day with the wireless off, a single charge of your Kindle’s battery would last about a monthfor the Kindle device, 2 months for the Kindle Touch and Kindle Keyboard, and 3 months for the Kindle DX device. The Kindle Fire lasts 8 hours in reading or 7.5 hours in video playback. If the wireless is always on, the battery will last about a week less than without the wireless. The reason Kindle devices’ batteries consume very little power is because unlike an LCD screen, the E Ink screen doesnot require power to maintain a page of text.

Prices The Kindle devices are available for shipping from the Amazon.com website online, but they are still not available for shipping to all countries. On the website, there is a non-US Kindle page, which ships internationally for slightly more expensive prices. Keeping in mind there will be shipping charges, the Kindle e-reader’s price is still affordable and reasonable; it is $109 on the Amazon.com website. The Kindle Touch is $139, while the Touch 3G is $149. The Kindle Keyboard is $189. The most expensive is the Kindle DX at $379. The Kindle Fireis still not available internationally, but it sells in the US for $199. With an Amazon Kindle you can have over a million books in the palm of your hand, a library of knowledge. Many of us might prefer having a hard solid book, but think of the amount of trees you will save by using a kindle. Amazon aims to have every book ever printed, in every language, available to you in less than 60 seconds. To many, this is a dream come true.

The World’s Leading Professional Network Have you ever received an e-mail that says “Join my network on LinkedIn?” You have probably wondered, “What is LinkedIn?” or just ignored the e-mail like most people would do. Well, LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network, with over 120 million members, and it is growing rapidly in over 200 countries, helping professionals find and share opportunities every day.

LinkedIn was launched in 2003, one year before the popular social network site Facebook was launched. Since then, both websites have branched off in two different directions with Facebook becoming the leader among general social sites (which cater to all groups of people with all interests) and LinkedIn becoming the leader among professional social sites. LinkedIn has two main competitors which offer similar services. They are Viadeo (35 million users) and XING (10 million users). Viadeo is mostly popular in Europe, but is currently targeting the US market with offices opening there in 2011 to compete with LinkedIn.

68

How is this related to you? Managing your career is an important reason for joining LinkedIn. When you develop your professional profile on LinkedIn, you establish a reliable resource on your experience and capabilities, which makes it possible for potential employers searching for professionals with education, experience and qualifications similar to yours to find you when they search the internet. Did you know that after signing up with LinkedIn people can read your profile when they Google your name or any relevant information available in your profile? This gives you the opportunity to have more control over what appears about you in Google results. Having a robust profile encourages people to approach you with opportunities. Moreover, you can reconnect with your friends and family just by signing into any of your emails and uploading your address book or even inviting them if they are not members already. This allows you to stay in touch even if your contacts change jobs or email addresses. In addition, when you want to make new business connections, you can find people using LinkedIn’s search tool to see who you know in common. How you can benefit from LinkedIn The main purpose of the website is to allow registered users to maintain a list of contacts with whom they have some level of relationship, called Connections. This list of connections can then be used in a number of ways: • Find jobs, professional and business opportunities in your field. • Employers open accounts to list jobs and search for potential candidates. • Increase your visibility by adding connections and asking for recommendations. • LinkedIn allows you to make your profile information available for search engines to index. • Use LinkedIn to find the people that you are meeting and read their backgrounds for a smoother interview. • Ask for advice with business related questions using their Linked Answers service along with many other business related services.

69

Future of LinkedIn Early on, LinkedIn was mainly used by Executives with an average age of 40 and making over $100,000 incomes annually, but today it is flooded with a new wave of social networkers; young students and graduates seeking professional careers. In 2008, LinkedIn launched the LinkedIn Talent Advantage service for companies that began to recognize the value of LinkedIn to find and hire top candidates. Currently, an estimated 40% of the American economy’s leading companies use LinkedIn as a recruiting tool. This figure is increasing by the day.

LinkedIn in Palestine and the Arab World Palestinian employers have also shown significant interest in LinkedIn with 154 companies and institutions listed as members. As of February 2012, only 1,272 members are connected to linkedIn from the Palestinian territories. Since this figure can be viewed as small considering the fact that unemployment in Palestine is high, it is possible that Palestinian professionals are slow to adapt to more advanced methods in advertising their professional profiles, but as more Palestinian companies use LinkedIn, professionals will surely follow. LinkedIn has been very successful globally with 59% of its users located outside the United States. Nonetheless, it has remained fairly irrelevant in the Arab world even though it is growing there. Arabic is not one of the 16 languages offered for users.

LinkedIn Globalization LinkedIn has clearly grown to be a great tool in helping career minded professionals connect with each other in hopes of advancing their careers. In today’s global economy it is important to be connected with other professionals and LinkedIn can help you with that.
