STEPS TO SUCCESS

2

RESEARCH

• What does your airport need?

• What should you build around it?

• Is your idea green and sustainable?

• How will it connect to the community?

4 UPSKILL

• Use this magazine to learn or investigate new skills to do more in Minecraft Education!

• Can you make it move with Redstone?

• Can you code an agent to assist your build?

DEFINE YOUR VISION

• What are the needs of the new airport and its community?

• Plan your solution together

• How will it work in Minecraft Education ?

3

PLAN

• Brainstorm the structures and infrastructure

• Consider how it will grow into the future

• Focus on innovation and new ideas

5

BUILD

• Prototype and build in Minecraft

• Add boards and posters to explain your design

• Use Non-Player-Characters (NPCs) to guide the experience

6

TEST AND TRIAL

• Get feedback on your prototype from other students, a teacher, a community member or expert

• Use feedback to modify and retest

• Now finalise your airport precinct –is it ready?

7

SHARE

• Has your team agreed that your design is complete?

Get T ing started with Minecraft Education

NSW public schools have access to Minecraft Education. This powerful edition of Minecraft is specifically designed for students.

Why is Minecraft Education such a great design tool?

Minecraft Education has added features that allow you to create in the Minecraft universe. You can also:

Use NPCs (non-player-characters) to provide direction in your world

Create posters, boards and slates to convey information

Use the Code Builder to supercharge your building process

Engineer, power and make your world interactive with Redstone mechanics

How do I access it?

You must get your teacher to sign you up before accessing Minecraft Education

Download Minecraft Education (Win 10, Chromebook iPadOS or Mac) or your teacher will ask to have it installed by your ICT Coordinator on School Devices

Then simply login with your @education.nsw.gov.au email address

You can learn more about Minecraft Education on this website

Top teacher tips

Mr MerRick is a teacher who loves Minecraft! Here are his tips to get started with your design.

Mr Mer R ick says:

When working on a large project like this it is a really good idea to follow the design process – the steps to success model (check out page 4). This will give you a really clear plan for what you want to achieve and how to get there. Here are my top tips on approaching this challenge: 1

RESEARCH

What do existing airports look like? What is cutting edge in airport technology?

2 DESIGN

Get your friends together and make some groups, give people jobs or roles. Draw some sketches, or storyboards showing the key elements of your design.

3

PRODUCE

This is where the bulk of the work gets done. Create a flat world and share your join code with your friends and get building! 4

EVALUATE

The last step is also the most important. Look at your final result and compare it to your initial designs. Be honest with yourself and your friends. Did you achieve what you set out to do? If not, why? What went wrong? What could you change? Gre

Airports and airlines around the world are trialling and testing new tech to make sure they are cleaner and greener. Some of these ideas include:

• Green aviation fuel

• Electric aircraft

• Carbon offsets

• Recycled luggage tags

Top student tips

Here’s some tips from a Year 5 clas S of Minecraft users on how they’re approaching the airport design chal L enge. Could you use some of these great gre

ideas below in your design?

Instead of using water continuously, recycling and reusing water will make the airport more sustainable.

The airline industry needs to work on building planes that don’t emit too much CO2.

Recycle components that don’t affect safety, maybe a percentage of the airport could be built from recycled materials.

Solar powered and renewable energy is going to be needed.

nancy-Bird Walton: Australian aviation pioneEr

DID Yo U K no W?

The new airport in western Sydney is named after aviation pioneer Nancy-Bird Walton. It will be known as Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport Nancy-Bird Walton (1915-2009) earned her commercial pilot’s licence at the age of just 19. She learned to fly under the guidance of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith and was the youngest Australian woman to obtain a pilot’s licence at the time.

A n GEL o F THE o UTBACK

She became known as the ‘angel of the outback’ after helping set up the Royal Far West Children’s Health Scheme – a flying medical service which is now known as the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. Nancy-Bird Walton used her own Gipsy Moth plane as an air ambulance. She went on to fly commercial planes across the world. After World War II broke out, she returned to Australia to train women in flight skills.

AWARDS A n D REC o G n ITI on

Walton went on to create the Australian Women Pilots Association and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1966. She was declared an Australian National Treasure in 1997, an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2000 and was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2001.
