The panellists, moderated by Dipl.-Ing. Markus Lüling, Editorin-Chief of K-Profi, examined the extent to which digitalisation offers solutions to the issues of sustainability and the shortage of qualified personnel. The prominent panellists arrived at a conclusive verdict: digitalisation is tops! It’s a necessity! It’s a tool for achieving effectiveness, which in turn leads to greater efficiency, emphasised Thomas Seul. There are plenty of examples from numerous sectors indicating that digitalisation has helped us to move forward. Hans-Josef Endres also made his case for “tops”, because digitalisation offers many opportunities and practical advantages throughout the entire process chain – for example in order to make the flow of materials transparent by collecting and using the relevant data, in order to be able to reuse materials. It’s finally time again,” rejoiced Dr. Christoph Schumacher, vice president for global marketing at Arburg, regarding Fakuma 2024. “For us it’s like coming home.” Michael Wittmann, owner and CEO of the Wittmann Group, was also highly satisfied: “We’re very pleased to be here again.

Traditionally, Fakuma is a trade fair where we hold intensive discussions and develop new ideas. Personal interaction and practical experience are particularly important this year.”

Fakuma is becoming increasingly international With 47.5% of the exhibitors coming from outside of Germany (previous year: 44.0%), this year’s trade fair for the plastics processing industry once again occupied a leading position throughout the world. From a total of 1639 exhibitors (3 more than in 2023), 778 travelled to Stuttgart from many different countries – including 170 companies from China, 142 from Italy, 81 from Switzerland, 77 from Austria and 51 from Turkey. For manufacturers and users, topics such as increased efficiency, process stability, reproducibility and minimised setup times are at the top of the agenda. Consequently, plastics processors are implementing all conceivable technical and organisational measures, as well as investments, to ensure that they remain competitive… because they’re being forced to produce more and more economically.

Roundtable discussion: digitalisation is tops!

The highly specialised expert community was presented with lots of attractive highlights as part of this year’s trade fair programme. Initially, the second edition of the Fakuma Round Table was held during the afternoon of the first day of the trade fair, this time addressing the topic of “Digitalisation – Top or

prerequisites for closed loop processes can only be fulfilled by means of digitalisation.

However, digitalisation should not be taken to absurd extremes. “We shouldn’t focus attention on irrelevant aspects,” says Braungart. “Always take a careful look at what you want to digitalise first.” The panellists agreed in this regard: simplify and improve processes first, then digitalise them. This is the only way to ensure meaningful and effective digitalisation. Miranda Burtscher pointed out an important task: digitalisation also results in large amounts of data that require the use of appropriate analysis tools.

However, the interfaces must first be equipped with a common language because networking would otherwise be doomed to failure.

New talent recruitment on career Friday Career Friday was a special highlight this year: The trade fair promoters, the exhibitor advisory board and the exhibitors jointly organised a campaign for pupils, students and entry-level employees in keeping with the motto “Mould Your Dreams, Mould Your Future”. The objective was to inform young people about career opportunities in the plastics industry and, at the same time, impart knowledge in the field of plastics.

The campaign was very well received – many exhibitors organised shuttle services, activities, tours of the trade fair booths and glimpses behind the scenes of plastics processing. More than 400 highly interested young people took advantage of this opportunity and joined the various guided tours. “Career Friday was a highlight in Fakuma’s trade fair history,” declared Dr. Christoph Schumacher enthusiastically.

Michael Wittmann praised the initiative as well: “It was a great opportunity for young people to get to know our industry.”

An all-round positive verdict: the future is looking bright!

“Fakuma 2024 was once again a great family celebration for the plastics industry,” says Bettina Schall, managing director of trade fair promoters P. E. Schall, in summing up the 5 successful days of the event in Friedrichshafen, which attracted 36,675 visitors.

Bettina Schall is optimistic about the industry’s future. “Although the current situation is challenging and we have to deal with numerous highly complex issues simultaneously, the concentrated innovative power experienced at Fakuma 2024 is a strong indication that we’re tackling the issues with determination and confidence,” says the managing director. “The last several days at the trade fair have helped to make it possible to implement constructive approaches, step by step. I would like to thank all of the exhibitors and visitors for their active contribution and for their participation.

he first-ever Plastics Recycling Show India (PRS India) will be held from 4-6 December 2024 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai. This three-day event will highlight the latest advancements in plastics recycling, with cutting-edge innovations, top brands, and key stakeholders from the recycling ecosystem.

The three-day exhibition and conference is the ideal meeting place for plastic recyclers, machinery manufacturers, raw material providers, circular economy specialists, packaging companies, brand owners, waste management companies,

plastic scrap traders, logistic service providers, and many more.

From 4-6 December, the focus will be on highlighting plastic recycling innovations from the top companies in India and across the globe. International leaders in plastic machinery like A.T.E Huber Envirotech Private Limited, EREMA Engineering Recycling Maschinen und Anlagen GmbH, Kreyenborg GmbH & Co. KG, Krones Recycling GmbH and Lindner Recyclingtech GmbH will join top Indian players like Dalmia Polypro, Ganehsa EcoSphere Ltd, Rungta Greentech, Pashupati Polytex in showcasing their latest innovations.

The latest trends in the plastics recycling sector will be explored in depth, with local and international experts addressing key themes including EPR regulations, recycling challenges, the circular economy, emerging technologies, opportunities, innovations, technologies and trends. experiences from across the sector promoting the sustainable use of plastics.

Also launching this year, the Plastics Recycling Awards India are set to recognize and celebrate outstanding achievements across the Indian plastics recycling industry. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on the evening of the show’s middle day, 5th December.

recision, repeatability, traceability, and efficiency of manpower are essential elements that companies in the colour masterbatch sector are looking for to produce their products.

Lawer, with its automatic weighing systems can optimize the production process ensuring accuracy, repeatability, traceability and efficiency, reducing the need of manpower and eliminating the “human error” factor.

Within the range of products offered by Lawer, there are two specific solutions for the color masterbatch and plastics industries, one for the production

(SUPERSINCRO) and one for the laboratory (TD-MATIC).

With Supersincro is possible to load products from silos (cap. 380 l), hoppers (up to 1.850 l) and big bags, depending on the customer’s needs and the available space. The machine can also have a storage station with manual or automatic interchangeable silos (cap. 20 or 70 l), where it is possible to keep products of rare use or products which is needed very little quantities. The loading system can be by gravity or vacuum, is facilitated by tools such as loading pumps, bag transport trolleys and barcode scanners, which ensure the correct identification and handling of the products. Moreover, Supersincro, thanks to advanced suction systems and filters, prevents the escape of volatile dust, creating a healthy and safe environment for the operators.

A double dosing screw (equipped with anticlogging devices) allows to weigh the products directly in bags of different sizes (from 9 to 36 l) created automatically by the machine. The bag is

then automatically sealed and released on a conveyor belt or in a box, ready for the next process. All the weighing process, thanks to the last generation of servo motors, can also contribute to reduce energy consumption up to 30% compared to traditional technology.

Supersincro is a smart system that can communicate with a management software and provide useful data for the quality control and the optimization of the production, such as CPK for repeatability and OEE for production efficiency. Furthermore, Supersincro is compliant with industry 4.0 regulations, which means that it can connect and exchange data with other machines and systems in the factory.

TD-MATIC is a laboratory machine, able to automatically weigh little quantities of powders thanks to a micro-dosing screw inside the silo. It can be configured with a multi-level rack with 82 or 112 mini-silos, with a capacity of 2,7 l each, and 36 beakers (cap. 1600 cc) where to put the weighed recipe.

The three axes robotic arm is specifically studied for mini-silos handling, to move them from the parking to the weighing station (resolution of the scale 0.001 g) and also for the beakers handling.

TD-MATIC is equipped with an efficient suction system which allows to keep the weighing area clean and to avoid internal contaminations.

TD-MATIC communicates with a Lawer management software, every mini-silo is identified by a barcode and a RFID tag, to avoid human errors and to permit the traceability of the recipe.

It generates sophisticated reports and permits integration with external systems (MES) thus falling into the Industry 4.0 concept.

Up to date no one in the world has ever built a completely electrified accumulator head of big size, Magic, which always looks ahead and, driven by this philosophy, has understood that even in the field of industrial machines the complete electrification will become a determining and indispensable factor. We did it in the past with the continuous extrusion technology for machine up to 60 Tons for the production, per example, in 6+6 cavities for 5 litres containers; we do it today also with the industrial machines for containers up to 280 litres. Soon we will do in fact a second Open Day to show the world the new transfer machine with all electric technology of 80-100 Tons for containers up to 280 litres. This machine will have an incredible saving for our clients in terms of energy consumption equal to almost 180.000 Euro per year.

We are led to think that electrification is all about the necessity of the energetic economy. But this is one of the aspects, even though very important. The electric motor means also more precision and repeatability in the execution of the movements, that impacts on the efficiency of the machine, in lighter articles and shortest working cycles and with less wastes. It will be easy for our clients to understand how advantageous and innovative is to produce with a machine which consume 50-60% less, that thanks to its stability allows shortest working cycles and allows to produce lighter articles and even more with reduced maintenance costs of 50%.”

hrough clients, FAP has historically responded to the most current needs of the construction, packaging, and automotive sectors.

Founded by Luigi Poli in 1987 and now led by his sons, Fabrizio and Francesco Poli, FAP manufactures foam extrusion plants, automatic winders, lamination and converting lines, along with all modern associated services, including preventive maintenance and personnel support and training.

“We’ve gone beyond traditional customer service by venturing into project consulting and assistance for entrepreneurs who want to build a new production plant or start producing a new material,” explains Fabrizio Poli, CEO of FAP. “Not only can we advise on the type and number of machines required, but we also cover

all aspects of managing the production facility, from the necessary space to staffing and shift organization.” The expansion of services, with a strong emphasis on R&D, is one of the new initiatives launched by the Poli brothers after they took over the family business in 2020.

“We have made significant investments in the new production area and created new services,” adds Fabrizio Poli, “to offer clients a complete solution. The starting point was the growing difficulty companies face in finding qualified personnel.”

FAP’s target market ranges from large multinationals to small family-owned businesses. “When we design a machine, we put ourselves in the shoes of those making the investment; this philosophy has always defined us and is something clients recognize. The current market context drives us to design increasingly automated and user-friendly machines.

Today’s key issues include green design, speed, flexibility, and project customization.”

FAP adheres to ESG principles, aiming to minimize the energy consumption of new machinery. These high-energy systems benefit from every optimization, positively impacting company finances.

For instance, to reduce power consumption during startup, FAP has equipped its machines with software that manages machine heating to prevent

energy spikes, reaching the same result by modulating energy demand. Each machine is tailored to client requirements, reducing delivery and installation times to a minimum.

On the sustainability front, FAP continues its research efforts. “For around 10 years, we have been working with a leading university in Milan on a system to produce foam with CO2, an alternative to isobutane, which is commonly used,” continues Fabrizio Poli. “So far, we’ve obtained two patents, one Italian and one European, with potential future applications in two new fields for us— food and pharmaceuticals.” The R&D department is highly important to FAP, which is also why it chose to expand and renovate its Besana in Brianza facility.

“We have historically collaborated with leading plastic material manufacturers to develop new materials, offering them the possibility of industrial testing. The new plant, set to be completed by 2025, will not only expand the area dedicated to FAP’s production but will also include a separate lab area dedicated specifically to research, development, and a showroom.” A new frontier to stay at the forefront of innovation.

undreds of companies from over 30 countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East have already confirmed their participation in the 29th International Fair of Plastics and Rubber Processing. From 20 to 23 May 2025, companies will present the latest solutions for this industry; exhibitor registration is still open. Book your place now!

“Poland is Central Europe’s centre of plastics processing, which is why our presence at Targi Kielce is a must,” emphasised many company representatives at last year’s Plastpol Expo. Preparations for the May 2025 event are already in full swing.

New Plastpol exhibitors from outside Europe “We are present at many industry events in Poland, Europe and Asia, and we meet manufacturers and suppliers of machines and solutions for the plastics processing industry from many countries. he second edition of the Plastics Recycling Show Middle East & Africa in Dubai has built on the success of last year’s first edition to firmly establish the event as the region’s stand-out event for all those engaged in the circular and sustainable use of plastics. The recent three-day exhibition and conference attracted 124 exhibitors, over 50 eminent speakers and more than 3,700 attendees.

The exhibition was inaugurated by His Excellency Butti Saeed Al Ghandi, ViceChairman of the Dubai World Trade Centre; Mr. Kinana Jamaluddin, Representative of Sultan Al Bohra, Syedna Muffadal Saifuddin; Mr. Taher Patrawala, Managing Director, Media Fusion; Mr. Matthew Barber, Director, Global Trade Shows & Sales Director, Crain Global Polymer Group; Mr. Sunu Nair, General Manager, Media Fusion; and other dignitaries.

“The GCC region is already on the fast track when it comes to sustainability.

Bariq’s Senior Commercial Specialist Abdelrahman Elghazy added: “We are the first and biggest in the MENA region to recycle PET. Part of being the biggest one in the MENA region is to show our presence each and every year at PRS.” Vivek Begwani, Commercial Manager at Gemini Corporation of Belgium said: “In 2024, I must say that there has been more footfall than before. We are able to meet more and more suppliers and stakeholders at one place, which is great. It is interesting to see what innovations are going on in the industry. Next year, we are even planning to have a booth of our own.”

Decade-long experience generates strong potential More than 80-year experience and technical potential have allowed PRESMA to create presses ranging from the simplest and most traditional to the most impressive right to the recent multistation rotary versions

RESMA SpA, in the sector of injection moulding machines for thermoplastics since 1937, produces over 100 models with closing forces from 60 to 6000 kN, mould holder plates with dimensions up to mm. 1860x1860, versions with modular closures with 1, 2 or 3 stations and rotary ones with 2 to 18 stations; opening moulds horizontally or vertically; punching or transfer screw injector assemblies, multicolour, for structural foam or bicomponent (sandwich structure). Since 2010 it has also offered horizontal and vertical injection machines, with and without columns, single and multiple moulds, for the production of solid and liquid rubber and silicone articles. The machines produced for the specific rubber sector are represented by special versions made to customer specifications.

The experience acquired in over eighty years of presence on the market and the available technical potential have allowed in these first years of presence in this sector to create presses ranging from the simplest and most traditional vertical machines without columns and horizontal versions with columns up to 400 tons to the most impressive vertical machines from 300 to 1600 tons with and without columns with translating tables and/or

equipped with multiple injector groups and recently multi-station rotary versions for rubber and silicones with horizontal and vertical mould opening and closing.

For over twenty years, production has been 100% to order and concentrated on special systems created to customer specifications; for this reason, a large commitment is reserved for research and development which guarantees the company a constant “market share”.

The company is made up of around fifty employees and is organized internally so as to be independent in all phases of the design of all the components, of the realization of the order including the most important mechanical processes, the manuals, up to the testing of the plant; an online and on-site after-sales technical assistance service completes its range of services.

The company exports on average 75% of its production and operates at different times throughout almost the whole world; the main markets are however represented by Europe and neighbouring countries.

The most important achievements of the last decades are represented by: • Solid silicone moulding machines with a clamping force of 1600 tons designed to overinject solid silicone insulation

coatings onto fiberglass bars up to 4 meters; specifically, insulators for high voltage pylons.

• Rotary machines with 8 working stations with vertical closure and equipped with two vertical punching screw injection groups specific for the production of industrial wheels in PU or TR for the tread and Nylon or PP for the hub.

• Range of hybrid and totally electric machines specific for the injection moulding of expanded thermoplastic resin caps as an alternative to cork for wine, sparkling wines and T-shaped caps for spirits.

• Rotary injection machines with 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, 15, 16 and 20 stations for the moulding of ground PVC coming from the recovery of disused electrical cables. For the road construction sector, these rotary machines are used for the production of road cones and bases up to 40kg. to support the signage. Versions equipped with special injector groups are used for the production of road barriers and cable trays with recycled PP covers, the latter as an alternative to concrete.

All these articles have large thicknesses, even more than 10 mm and require a long stay inside the mould for optimal cooling; they are therefore difficult to print with traditional single-station machines.

• Injection moulding machines for expanded, recycled and co-injected thermoplastics (structural foam – co-injection).

• 8-station rotary machine with vertical closure for moulding solid silicone articles.

• Automated moulding islands for the production of screwdrivers with handles in three/four thermoplastic materials; handles for brushes and various multicoloured grips.
