TECNALIA prioritises the use of this knowledge with a clear global approach, focusing on the deployment of cost effective marine energy farms throughout their life cycle. TECNALIA has accumulated extensive experience in the development of devices for harnessing wave energy and offshore wind, especially at great depths.

TECNALIA, in collaboration with industrial partners, is developing three high-impact technologies: a floating offshore wind turbine, a wave energy converter and a superconducting electric generator for offshore wind turbines. The experience gained by TECNALIA in the development of these technologies, gives it a privileged view of the opportunities in the marine environment for sustainable and efficient energy use.

FOSTERING THE PENETRATION OF RENEWABLE ENERGIES

We develop systems that allow the use of energy at times when it is not generated, ensuring higher energy quality. They are systems and components for thermal energy and electricity storage systems for stationary applications to support the integration of renewable energies or to provide support to the distribution network. In the field of energy storage, our activity spans the development of components and cells (electrodes, membranes, ionic liquids, etc.); the design, prototyping and manufacture of modules; the development of control elements and algorithms for power electronics; the design of plants and the development of their control algorithms, among other aspects.

STATIONARY BATTERY FOR LARGESCALE ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Large-scale electric power storage system, based on metal-air galvanic pairs. It is a scalable battery in terms of power and energy, with great cyclability and an extended life cycle, high-efficiency cycles, cheaper than the existing batteries, with reduced operation costs, with costs that are independent from temporary factors, low-maintenance, non-toxic, which uses raw materials that are plentiful in nature.

TOWARDS SMART GRIDS AND ENERGY SYSTEMS

INGRID, is the TECNALIA electrical laboratory, leader in Spain and Portugal. TECNALIA has extensive experience in the evaluation of product conformity for distribution companies and in the technical requirements and certification processes requested by the electrical utility companies. TECNALIA operates a unique infrastructure, a cutting edge independent energy testing centre that is the largest in south-west Europe equipped to conduct short-circuit and high power tests (up to 200 kA), with a wide range of high and low voltage devices for failure assessment of high voltage equipment.

In the past year, in line with the deployment of the new requirements of the electricity network, TECNALIA has increased its functional assessment activities and interoperability of products for intelligent electricity networks (for example, smart meters) , conformity assessment of power electronics devices (for example, photovoltaic inverters) and tests for the commissioning of high voltage cables.

INGRID is a living and tailored infrastructure that is closely in contact with the industry and the global scientific community, providing support on applied research and the technological development of companies, configured as an international collaboration node.

POWER ELECTRONICS TO DOMINATE ENERGY

TECNALIA supports the integration and increased efficiency of the main energy applications and systems (photovoltaic inverters, wind converters: electrical energy storage, electric vehicle, active filters for smart grids, etc.), hence offering support to designers, manufacturers, users, etc.

We work in the fields of: • Power Electronics: modelling of converters and full simulations adapted to each application. • Control Electronics low level hardware and software. It contemplates the design of DSP-based hardware (Digital Signal Processing), micros and FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), among other activities. • Signal adaptation and development of specific control algorithms: wind power, photovoltaic applications, electricity storage, etc. • Multilevel converters with more complex architecture than two-level converters, to work at higher voltages.

Aimed at the reduction of long distance transmission losses (capacitive currents do not need any compensation). Furthermore HVDC transmission offers instantaneous control of P and Q, the uncoupling between farm and network and greater control flexibility.

EUSKALMET Basque Meteorology Agency. Our experience is extensive in the field of operational meteorology and more specifically in the development and implementation of comprehensive meteorological services, such as the Basque Meteorology Agency (EUSKALMET). Since it was set up in 2003, we have provided EUSKALMET with operational capacity (24 hours a day, 365 days a year). We operate in all areas of operational meteorology at a regional and local level, particularly in the field of operational analysis, surveillance and forecasting for the Emergencies and Meteorology Directorate of the Basque Government’s Security Department.

AQUANAN

Study into the River Nervión basin and the influence of impacts arising from climate change. Coupled hydrologic-hydraulic modelling which, based on climate scenarios, has enabled the prediction of the basin response to changes in rainfall, the delimititation of the potential flood and the definition of the severity and risk associated to the impact. Based on this knowledge, plans can be developed to reduce these effects (adaptation).

Photovoltaic reactor based on optical fibres coated with titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles for the removal of organic compounds (emerging and priority contaminants) from water.

The worldwide population is growing by around 80 million people each year and it is estimated that 9 billion people will be living on Earth by 2050. Research and development is increasingly essential for a sustainable management of resources.

DEMCAMER DEsign and Manufacturing of CAtalytic MEmbranes Reactors by developing new nano-architectured catalytic and selective membrane materials. www.demcamer.org DEMCAMER develops the concept of process intensification through the combination of reaction and separation in a single unit: the Catalytic Membrane Reactor.

Membrane technology offers a series of advantages over conventional technologies (PSA, TSA, cryogenic distillation, etc.). • Ongoing process that does not require regeneration stages. • Easy to integrate and scalable. • More compact and free of moving parts, which leads to reduced operating and maintenance costs.

This reactor improves its performance, effectiveness (reduction in the number of stages) and its sustainability. It aims to improve efficiency in pure hydrogen, liquid hydrocarbons and ethylene production, in four chemical processes: Autothermal Reforming (ATR), Fischer-Tropsch (FTS), Water Gas Shift (WGS), and Oxidative Coupling of Methane (OCM). DEMCAMER is partially funded by the European Union through the 7th Framework Programme (NMP3LA-2011-262840).

BIOREFINERY TO REDUCE OUR DEPENDENCE ON OIL

We generate business opportunities... related to the general substitution of petroleum products (conventional refinery) with products obtained from biomass (biorefinery); understanding biomass to be the energy crops, forest, farming and livestock waste; municipal solid waste; as well as some industrial waste that can be treated as the above mentioned. We develop chemical products and processes that are useful in almost all industrial sectors: the chemical industry, energy (biofuel), pharmacy, agriculture, food, construction, medicine, industry of intermediary compounds for these sectors, water treatment, gases and solid waste, etc. Examples of these developments are: polymers based on biomass for the construction sector; monomers for the manufacture of polyurethane not based on isocyanates (others); production of high value-added products based on fatty acid methyl esters, etc.

BIOSOS Sustainable biorefinery. Conversion of lignocellulosic material into biofuel and other substitutive petroleum chemical products such as biopolymers, additives, biolubricants and green chemistry in general.

SINGLICAR Glycerol carbonate synthesis based on glycerol, CO2 and its derivatives. This synthesis aims to respond to the need to take profit from the by-products from the manufacture of biodiesel through the generation of a base compound for the synthesis of other more complex, high added-value chemical products.

NEW MATERIALS FOR LOW CARBON ECONOMIES

We generate business opportunities in the field of renewable energy, in the energy storage, distribution and transmisssion, in efficient industrial use and management of GHG emissions, through innovation in the field of advanced surfaces: resistant coatings in extreme conditions, efficient functional layers (for example solar energy), embodied micro and nanomaterials into surface layers, among others.

We develop new materials for: • Advanced surfaces: functional surfaces that represent a breakthrough in energy efficiency and the reduction of carbon emissions; and support the energy systems of the future. • Materials for extreme conditions: materials that function at high temperatures, under radiation, in more corrosive conditions, that give rise to more energy efficient processes throughout the whole life cycle. • Ionic Liquids: as a more efficient and ecological alternative in a wide range of applications, such as the recovery of critical metals, water treatment, CO2 capture, energy storage (electrolytes), management of thermal energy (phase change fluids), biomass treatment, etc.

IONIC LIQUIDS FOR CO2 CAPTURE. Design, synthesis and characterisation of ionic liquids with absorption properties and capacity in CO2 capture applications. Definition of the optimum operating conditions to ensure process efficiency. The capture process will take advantage of the specific properties and characteristics of ionic liquids. As ionic liquids are formed only by ions they boast high CO2 dissolution capacity, high chemical stability, reduced corrosion, liquid state at a wide range of temperatures, an almost null vapour pressure (avoiding losses during the capture process). Ionic Liquids are extraordinarily versatile to optimise CO2 capture.

TURNING WASTE INTO VALUE

We generate business opportunities... for ecoindustry, focusing on the resolution of environmental problems and for all industry in which the environment is extremely relevant to business, through: • Obtaining value from waste in the form of new resources (new materials, energy, secondary raw materials, etc.) • Optimisation of resources (materials, energy, land use) in the treatment and management of contaminated materials (waste, wastewater, contaminated soil and sediments) when valuation is not feasible. We also offer guidance on: • Environmental control for the assessment and the improvement of the level of compliance with legal requirements. • Evaluation, analysis and technical guidance on compliance with the REACH Directive and the Biocide Directive. • Analysis and evaluation of chemical and biological properties of biocide and chemical materials and products.

SUSTAINABLE RECOVERY OF CRITICAL MATERIALS PRESENT IN WASTE. Search for solutions for the sustainable recovery of critical materials, i.e. those that due to their wide application and/or scarce presence in nature will have difficulties to cover their demand on a medium-to-long-term. New methods to extract key elements (cobalt, magnesium, niobium, rare earths...) from different waste streams (electric-electronic sector, automotive industry-batteries, combustion ashes, etc.).
