INDUSTRY AND FACTORY OF THE FUTURE
At TECNALIA we are ahead of future manufacturing trends and we speed up implementation so they are profitable for our clients. We work on new manufacturing concepts that promote industrial activity in the medium term, and make it more profitable. The factory of the future will be highly automated thanks to robotics, and will be flexible in order to adapt fast to changes in production, by rapidly reconfiguring machines, plants and logistic processes. Both its processes and systems will be smart and connected, in order to anticipate any changes. Above all, it will be social and sustainable, where people will still be at the centre. We foresee all these challenges and turn them into business opportunities, together with our clients, starting today.
ACTIVITY AREAS More flexible and precise machines / Automated manufacturing of any product or process requires new machine concepts. In this sense, we work to create new production systems that are more flexible, developing new kinematics, incorporating robotics and integrating various processes into one single station. We look for production systems that adapt to new product types and demands.
We are also aware that new manufacturing trends such as customisation or multifunction also require high levels of quality and precision. Our research is geared towards achieving more precision in machines and improving their dynamics, in order to meet our clients’ needs.
New manufacturing processes / We are committed to the future and we research new production processes such as additive manufacturing, with the aim of transforming manufacturing and generating business opportunities for our clients. As we have a sound knowledge of materials, we are able to cover the entire production chain: from the development and handling of our own material to joining processes or the final polishing, including more traditional transformation processes such as rolling, machining and forming. We work on new processes with materials: metallic, ceramic, plastic and composite materials. They help us to develop and process the different materials in new applications foreseeable to date.

Precision, repetitiveness, strength and speed, which are typical features of a machine, combine with the intelligence, dexterity and flexibility of humans, to achieve a perfect tandem in a common environment. Hence we offer:
Human-robot collaboration / The presence of robots is increasing in production plants. In the factory of the future, robots will coexist and share tasks with humans, safely and efficiently. TECNALIA is involved in collaborative robotics and in the development of new robot architectures that adapt to industrial process requirements, such as cable-driven robot technology.
• Automation of sophisticated manual operations. • Reduced costs of complex tooling. • Improved use of space and infrastructures.
Product life cycle and sustainability / We cover the entire product life cycle, from its creation until its usage declines. This leads us to work on the development of life cycle maintenance and monitoring applications; as well as solutions that enable, for example, the recovery of materials to be used as raw materials. Efficient energy management is one of our lines of work, in order to ensure sustainability and resource optimisation, even in high consumption processes. Our solutions reduce the impact on the environment and ensure compliance with health and safety conditions. To do this we incorporate smart technology into systems and products, by means of mass data collection, its processing and the development of more efficient algorithms that enable the development of high added value functionalities throughout the entire value chain.

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT
The society of the future is built with transport systems that are safer and more efficient, sustainable and closer to people. At TECNALIA we offer new mobility concepts that use new materials, integrate communications systems, alternative propulsion systems, interacting with passengers, etc. We work with all transport sectors throughout the entire value chain. Smart systems, electrification, lightening, functional materials are some of our activity areas, which offer solutions to the needs and challenges of transport and mobility of the future.
ACTIVITY AREAS
Mobility is created by making technology work for people. This helps us to shape new ideas that lead us to the future.
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) / TECNALIA is actively involved in the incorporation of new technology, ICT, into means of transport, in order to make them intelligent and autonomous. We strongly promote the development of mobility by means of the validation and evaluation of new ITS, the design of modelling tools and virtual tests of new vehicles, and research into unmanned vehicle solutions. We have testing equipment and commercial validation tools developed specifically by TECNALIA or by third parties.

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT
Electrifying Transport / We offer solutions for new advanced propulsion (electric and hybrid propulsion) and control systems. We work on the efficiency and optimisation of propulsion of land vehicles, rail, aircraft and ships. Electric cars and their components are an important area for our company.
Functional and tailor-made materials / We design new materials to improve the performance of the end product, and we look for suitable solutions in each case, regarding both metallic and nonmetallic materials. We develop tailor-made materials that are designed by and for specific applications, beyond the ability of traditional compositions. • Functional materials and systems. • Structural materials for extreme conditions. • Processing and treatment of nanomaterials: functional nanoparticles and multi-functional, multi-layered materials. • New combinations for ice protection structures, fire resistance, EMC-EMI protection, resistance to erosion, lightning, etc. • Advanced materials for sensors and actuators.
Lightening / Light materials enable steps forward in traction sectors such as aeronautics and automotive, as they reduce fuel consumption and improve aircraft and car efficiency. We develop and optimise composite materials for next generation aerostructure design and the design of lighter functional parts for cars, ships and trains. We also develop new joining processes for the integration of hybrid structures, which are increasingly common in means of transport. Mechanical joining, linear friction welding and laser-beam welding of dissimilar materials are some of the areas we cover.
