According to the European Directive on Energy Efficiency in Buildings EPBD 2010/31/EU (RECAST), all buildings to be built from 2020 in Europe will have to be “nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) thus buildings will have to generate nearly the same amount of energy that they consume and in the case of public buildings from 2018. In addition, it will encourage that buildings must be transformed into nearly zero energy consumption. TECNALIA offers to industry and public administrations and standardization bodies, KUBIK experimental infrastructure along with their extensive knowledge and experience in the sector, to undertake R&D&I projects, focused on the development of new products and systems that provide energy consumption reduction for the building, but increasing user comfort.

Nearly Zero Energy Buildings “nZEB” Holistic development of solutions for the Optimisation of the Energy Efficiency in Buildings.
Research at an international level on building energy efficiency allows to point to the conclusion that the achieving building energy efficiency is understood as the resolution of a trinomial expression made up of:
Energy consumption reduction / Through rational use for air conditioning, illumination and ventilation of living spaces, supported by intelligent management systems.
Improvements of the energy efficiency in buildings / Through architectural or constructive solutions and to the performance of materials used in the building envelope, basically improving the insulation.
Increasing energy generation based on renewable energies / Handing over partial responsibility to the building for the generation of the energy needed to supply its activities.
Arising from the above conclusion is the need for more complex and more realistic studies of buildings and the opportunity to develop new products and services.
• Photovoltaic integration (BIPV) in the envelope. • Integration of the renewable solar thermal energy harvesting and supply in Smart Solutions for the envelope.
Thanks to the commitment of TECNALIA in the field of Energy and Building and the experimental infrastructure KUBIK, it is possible to provide support to the industrial sector to the creation of new business opportunities in the framework of the energy efficiency of products/systems and buildings.

Development of High Performance Products KUBIK adapts to the needs of each experimental and product development process. Within its highly flexible approach: the internal distribution of space; structural and anchor systems in the building, configuration of the internal HVAC, electric network and control system are redefined for each experimental approach. In KUBIK, tests on systems such as envelope systems, new HVAC systems, solar energy systems and building automation elements are performed.

High Performance Envelopes based on Superinsulation Materials Thermal, hydrothermal and mechanical validation of high performance insulation materials in full scale setups. Experiments are defined to validate the design of highly insulated assemblies, with special attention to junctions within the developed system and architectural junctions with neighboring systems such as slabs, windows‌
The development of new materials of high thermal performance that achieve low thermal transmittance with small thickness has become a technological challenge.
KUBIK is used as first full scale assessments in upscaling processes of laboratory-scale developments and pre-release tests of newly-developed to verify minimal thermal bridging and appropriate hydrothermal behavior under realistic boundary conditions, with the ultimate goal to ensure high-performance.
