Health TECNALIA carries out health-related activities regarding ageing in order to improve the quality of life of the elderly.

Our international and multi-disciplinary team is made up by 130 researchers specialised in the fields of health-oriented biotechnology, biomaterials, robotics and ICTs; this allows us to provide solutions to many health challenges from different perspectives such as health-care, food or medical devices, among others.

ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONAL STIMULATION (EFS) FOR PATIENTS WITH PARALYSED MUSCLES

TECNALIA HAS DEVELOPED FESARRAY, an advanced technology which provides selective neuromuscular electric stimulation for electric therapies, with a function to compensate for the lack of movement in patients with paralysed muscles.

SOUND RECOGNITION SYSTEM TECNALIA has developed a system which, by analysing the signal captured by a microphone placed in a home, automatically recognises the sounds that may occur in the environment (such as doorbells, running taps, mobile phones, etc.).

This can be used in various ways: • Support for people with impaired hearing: this technology can provide support in emergency situations or in daily situations that require their attention (banging on the door, a fire, the shower tap, an alarm clock, etc.).

• Support for telecare or telemonitoring systems: home sounds recognition could be

used by expert systems for monitoring activities. This information may be used by health care providers or caregivers, with the purpose of detecting any possible age-related cognitive impairment, or by applications offering a range of services to the user.

FEELING DETECTION SYSTEM TECNALIA has developed SENTIENT, a system that can detect whether a person is experiencing a positive or negative emotion, and measure its intensity, using a standard pulse meter and a smartphone.

• HEALTH. In the case of people with severe difficulties in expressing their emotions, for instance, those with autistic spectrum disorders or in a dependency status, this system can help them interpret their emotional status and prevent situations that could be potentially harmful or dangerous.

• SOCIETY. This system can be used as a personal stress manager.

• POLITICS. It provides campaign managers with the necessary information to determine, adjust or even promote the elements influencing voters’ intentions.

• ADVERTISING. This can help measuring the emotional response to advertising spots to optimise the investment in promotional campaigns.

ACTIVE PACKAGING SYSTEM

MICROENCAPSULATED SYMBIOTIC MATERIAL

TECNALIA has developed an active packaging system that improves food preservation, extending their useful life.

TECNALIA has developed an encapsulated product that includes probiotic and prebiotic compounds and polymeric materials as encapsulating elements.

An extension of the useful life by up to 15% has been achieved in certain foods. It can provide coverage to more distant markets, to compete with products based on natural compounds and free of chemicals that might affect their composition. Therefore, it is a commitment to natural foods that will help businesses to meet their consumers’ demands, who are increasingly aware and prefer to buy healthy products.

The structure of the capsule makes it possible to create a symbiotic agent that is able to reach the intestinal tract in a more efficient form than non-encapsulated symbiotics. PEEK POROUS MATERIAL FOR BONE IMPLANTS TECNALIA has developed processes which synthetise PEEK (polyetheretherketone) porous structures and functionalise their surface with biological molecules (such as RGD peptides).

These characteristics make the TECNALIA produced materials different from other PEEK materials in the market, providing a unique means towards the maximum osseointegration, bone conduction and induction of PEEK implants. At the same time, TECNALIA has registered these processes and is entirely free to work on an client-oriented optimisation of the resulting PEEK materials.
