INDUSTRY AND FACTORY OF THE FUTURE
At TECNALIA we are ahead of future manufacturing trends and we speed up implementation so they are profitable for our clients. We work on new manufacturing concepts that promote industrial activity in the medium term, and make it more profitable.
New manufacturing processes /
The factory of the future will be highly automated thanks to robotics, and will be flexible in order to adapt fast to changes in production, by rapidly reconfiguring machines, plants and logistic processes. Both its processes and systems will be smart and connected, in order to anticipate any changes. Above all, it will be social and sustainable, where people will still be at the centre.
As we have a sound knowledge of materials, we are able to work along the entire production chain: from the development and handling of our own materials to the connecting or assembling processes, including more traditional transformation processes such as rolling, machining and forming.
We foresee all these challenges and turn them into business opportunities, together with our clients, starting today.
We inspire solutions, we produce realities.
6
We are committed to the future: we research new production processes, such as additive manufacturing, through plasma welding or thermal projection. The objective is to transform manufacturing and generate new business opportunities for our clients.
ACTIVITY AREAS More flexible and precise machines / Automated manufacturing of any product or process requires new machine concepts. In this sense, we work to create new production systems that are more flexible, developing new kinematics, incorporating robotics and integrating various processes into one single station. We look for production systems that adapt to new product types and demands. We are also aware that new manufacturing trends such as customisation or multi-function also require high levels of quality and precision. Our research is geared towards achieving more precision in machines and improving their dynamics, in order to meet our clients' needs.
We work on new processes that enable the development and processing of materials geared towards new applications that were, until now, impractical. We are experts in metal, ceramic, plastic or composite materials.
INDUSTRY AND TRANSPORT
TECNALIA I INSPIRING BUSINESS
We are firmly in favour of the future of manufacturing, researching in Collaborative Robotics to connect and share machine capabilities with those of human beings.
Energy efficiency / We want to help our clients reduce their operating costs and their ecological footprint through the diagnosis and evaluation of their current production processes, their optimisation and the development and application of technological innovation to increase energy efficiency in industrial fields. Industry 4.0 / The Industry 4.0 concept which emerges from Germany and refers to the fourth industrial revolution; a revolution based on cyber-physical systems through the massive incorporation of ICTs, Internet and new technologies. In TECNALIA we want to help our clients to understand the key aspects of this revolution and to incorporate technologies that enable the development and deployment of Industry 4.0.
We cover the entire product life cycle, from its creation right up to its decline. For this reason, we also work in the development of applications for life cycle maintenance and monitoring. With this in mind, we have incorporated intelligence to our systems and products, through mass data collection, their processing and the development of more efficient algorithms that allow us to develop high added-value functionalities in every part of the value chain.
The integration of equipment with scientific-technological knowledge, such as advanced manufacturing, materials, software development, electronics, collaborative robotics, energy, environment, cloud computing, mass data analysis, etc. and in general, the vision of the factory of the future, position TECNALIA as a key agent in the deployment of Industry 4.0.

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT
The society of the future is built with transport systems that are safer and more efficient, sustainable and closer to people. At TECNALIA we offer new mobility concepts that use new materials, integrate communications systems, alternative propulsion systems, interacting with passengers, etc. We work with all transport sectors throughout the entire value chain. Smart systems, electrification, lightening, functional materials are some of our activity areas, which offer solutions to the needs and challenges of transport and mobility of the future.
ACTIVITY AREAS Control of electric transmission systems / The electric car and electric transport systems, in general, are a clear tendency and represent the near future. We have amassed solid experience in this field and we have become an international benchmark in the development of HW and SW for the control and simulation of electric transmission systems in different types of vehicles (from 0.1 to 30 ton), based on V technologies with self-made tools. • Control of system efficiency, safety and reliability. • Multi-domain modelling and simulation of electric transmission systems. • Highly innovative, integrated electric transmission systems. • Rapid prototyping of control mechanisms in electric transmission systems (dSPACE, NI, etc.). • Advanced "model-based" test bench for the development and calibration of control mechanisms.
8
We work to create new mobility concepts that are safer and more sustainable, intelligent and autonomous.
Automated driving and controls / The progressive automation of the vehicle and its interaction with a new infrastructure in the field of “Smart Cities” will have a significant impact on all the transport domains. We are working on: • Control algorithms for chassis and powertrains. • Vehicle automation. • Model-based X-in-the-loop (XIL) techniques from patented methods. • Testing equipment for ECU development & integration. • Development of ECU prototypes (hardware and software).
INDUSTRY AND TRANSPORT
TECNALIA I INSPIRING BUSINESS
Mobility is built by putting people before technology. This is how we achieve the new ideas that bring us into the future.
Functional and tailor-made materials / We design new materials to improve the performance of the final product, looking for the most suitable solution in each case, both in metal as in non-metal materials. We develop tailor-made materials, designed by and for specific applications, beyond the scope of traditional compositions: • Functional materials and systems. • Structural materials for extreme conditions. • Processing and treatment of Nano- materials Functional Nano-particles and Multi-functional, multi-layer materials. • New combinations for anti-ice, fire resistant, EMC-EMI protection, erosion- resistant or lighting-resistant structures. among others. • Advanced materials for sensors and actuators.
Lightweight structures & components / Light materials enable us to move forward in traction sectors such as aeronautics and automotive, as they reduce fuel consumption and improve aircraft and car efficiency. TECNALIA is an international benchmark in composite materials, with wide experience in the entire production chain, from design to assembly.
In this line, we develop and optimise composite materials for next generation aerostructure design or the design of lighter, functional parts for cars, ships and trains. We also develop new connecting processes for the integration of hybrid structures, which are increasingly common in means of transport.
