Perth 2013

OCTAGON THEATRE UWA, 26 OCTOBER 2013

This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED.

TEDxPerth is coming to the Octagon Theatre on October 26th to expose some of Perth's big ideas. Witness riveting, insightful and powerful talks by remarkable people offering unique perspectives and "ideas worth spreading".

THANKS FOR JOINING US AT TEDxPERTH 2013 For the second year running, TEDxPerth returns to the magnificent and newlyrefurbished Octagon Theatre to bring together twelve brilliant thinkers, observers and change makers and seven outstanding performers to share their ideas, stories and passion with over 700 of Perth’s most curious minds. We set out a little under two years ago believing that Perth, in its own way, is as remarkable as any other city in the world. We believe there exists notable, inspiring and awesome individuals, teams and communities that should have a forum to share ideas and challenge our views and attitudes. We believe in the power and catalytic potential that is inherent when more than 700 of Perth’s most ambitious, inquisitive and motivated people gather in one place. The phenomenal response to TEDxPerth 2012, Western Australia’s first large-scale TEDx event, confirmed that these beliefs are not just ours - they are shared by the community. In response, we have since hosted a number of events; including simulcasts of TED and TEDGlobal and the intimate Unplugged salons. The demand for today’s event was so overwhelming that the decision was made to expand the venue capacity and to simulcast to the Northbridge Piazza, the Concourse in Sydney and online around the world. Indeed, TEDxPerth is now the second-largest TEDx event in Australia. The event today is only possible because of the enthusiasm and drive of more than 30 volunteers who contributed over 2,500 hours to bring it together. Similarly, local organisations that share our vision and passion contributed resources - financial assistance and in-kind support - and it is their generosity that make today the event it is. TEDxPerth 2013 is more than just about today, more than just a gathering and more than just a conference – it is an opportunity to be inspired by the remarkable and to be challenged by the provoking. We thank you for sharing this journey.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF TEDxPERTH 2013 TALK TO SOMEONE NEW.

There is a reason all of you are here today, and the attendees are every bit as extraordinary as the speakers. Serendipitous encounters at TEDxPerth could lead to new perspectives, friendships and collaborations. You never know what a new connection might lead to.

LEAVE YOUR SCREENS IN YOUR BAG OR POCKET.

We all love our technology, but the TEDxPerth speakers deserve your attention. Laptops, tablets and smartphones are a distraction – not just for you, but also for those around you. To preserve an immersive experience, we ask you to silence your mobile phones when in the theatre and leave devices in your bag. If you wish to tweet or blog during the event, please sit in the back rows of the theatre.

SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH OTHERS.

If you blog, take photos or tweet, help us spread the word by using the #TEDxPerth hashtag. Take photos (note: no flash inside) and share your experiences with friends and family during the event.

ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT.

If you have any questions or problems, visit the registration desk or track down anyone wearing a TEDxPerth shirt.

VISIT PARTNER SPACES.

The TEDxPerth event is only possible due to the generosity of our partners. Please take some time during the breaks to visit our partners and have a conversation around their “ideas worth spreading”.

SPEAKERS, MCs PERFORMERS

+

MC MERI FATIN Enjoying the mental acrobatics of talking with bright, creative and articulate people is Meri Fatin’s favourite pastime and, as a producer at 720 ABC Perth and presenter on RTRFM, she has a myriad of opportunities to do so. Meri came late to the world of media, having earlier worked in human resource management and as a qualified Pilates instructor. But the media has so many priceless moments and she’s in for the long haul. What other career could afford such highlights as reading the newspaper for half an hour when you get into work, getting “hung up on” during a live interview or presenting a live broadcast from TEDxPerth 2012? As a mother of five, she reads aloud every night and feels that a job as a UN Peacekeeper could be in her future.

In addition, James moderated the 2013 WA State Election Leaders’ Debate and was a key part of the coverage from the ABC’s Election Centre on poll night. He has played inline hockey for more than a decade, captaining both the WA and Australian teams, and is a recent convert to ice hockey. Winner of the Clear Speech Award (2012), James is also an authorised civil celebrant. In his spare time, he enjoys red wine, mid-1960s Lambrettas and those old-fashioned sunglasses that young people seem to like these days.

PERFORMER LILT Fronted by Louise Penman, Lilt feature pure, biting vocals and powerful, intimate melodies while Matt Mclean’s textural synthetic production drives the music’s electronic soul. Together with Chris Honey, Lilt creates moments of vocal fragility, while dense clouds of synths merge with system shaking subs, bass growls, and menacing drums. Their debut EP Swim (2012) exceeded all expectations and gathered rave reviews and accolades, including RTRFM’s Local Feature EP and WAM Song of the Year nominations. Lilt also received Triple J airplay for Can’t Hear and Winter Sleep Rework, including play on Home and Hosed with Dom Alessio - a true testament to the diversity, accessibility and depth of their sound. With a brand new seamless live show and drummer, the next batch of Lilt material is decidedly more dance, with elements of UK garage and drum and bass in the mix, while retaining their trademark creative, forward thinking textures, compelling arrangements, and engaging, crystalline vocals. With a raft of exciting projects coming up in 2013, Lilt are definitely a band to keep your eye on.
