Pattaya: City of Culture

It might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but with music festivals, an abundance of temples and now a huge sculpture park Pattaya punches well above its weight.

What to do, Where to go

Pattaya’s DarkSide Few tourists venture to the East Side of Pattaya, but those that do are in for a treat. The area of Pattaya to the East of Sukhumvit Road is thriving for ex-pats and locals alike and it is one area of Pattaya that has seen far more than its fair share of changes over the past few years. The Dark Side is a lot cheaper to live, eat and drink than in the city and you are best to explore the area by car or motorbike. This month, sees the opening of another two high quality restaurants on Soi Khao Talo alone as well as new additions at the lake.

Buzzin Lifestyle gets Pattaya Buzzin! Trevor Knight Sat here writing this I am in awe of what has been an amazing last month. It’s one thing having an idea and believing it’s the right thing to do, but until it has been done you never truly know if it was right or wrong. I am delighted to say that when we made the decision to launch Buzzin Lifestyle last month it’s been a decision we are all absolutely delighted with! The feedback we have received has been amazing and a reflection of all the hard work that has been put in. One thing that has been asked a few times is will we increase the number of pages in future editions, and then pack it out with adverts and Items for sale etc. You will be pleased to know that this is not an avenue we will be going down and we will remain committed to giving you what, we hope, is a publication you will not want to put down, packed full of useful and informative information. A very special thank you this month must go to all of the contributors of the bags and bags of soft toys donated to the Bang Jing Jai Orphanage. In particular a special mention should go to Collingbourne Auctioneers, Koy Tree Sara Soaps and the Booze Lounge all of whom donated a huge number of toys. We had a wonderful day out with the children on the Pirate Ship, Admirallica as you can see on the children’s faces in the photos. Trevor Knight - Sub Editor trevor@buzzinmediagroup.com

Time to get those running shoes out

Whether you are already a keen runner or couch potato, hopefully, last month’s Kings Cup Marathon will have inspired you to get out there and improve your fitness. Whatever level you are, there are some fantastic places in Pattaya to get fit. Chaloem Phrakiat Park is located on Pratumnak Road, just before the entrance to Buddha Hill. some very impressive scenery and beautifully maintained gardens. Around the park, conveniently located are various exercise apparatus to break up your run.

A great rest spot along the way is just above the Pattaya City Sign. From the road, there is a long stair case down and you are, literally at the main Pattaya City Sign, overlooking Pattaya Bay even if you are not into fitness, this is a great beauty spot to visit

Once you have completed a circuit or two of the park, cross over Pratumnak Road for an equally scenic run heading towards the ocean. The road here, is marked at regular intervals to show the distance you have run and again there is an outdoor gym that is

We, also, suggest avoiding the hottest part of the day for exercising and definitely, please do not run in the park at night time. The area is poorly lit and not safe at night.

Happy 83rd Birthday Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, Caring Mother of the Thai Nation August 12th is a very special day throughout The Kingdom of Thailand, as it is the day the entire nation celebrates the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. The day is also celebrated as Mother’s Day. All of us at Buzzin Media Group would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations on this most auspicious of days and extend our loyalty and devotion to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. Her Majesty Queen Sirikit is the daughter of His Highness Prince Chandaburi Suranath (Mom Chao Nakkhatra Mangkala Kitiyakara) and Mom Luang Bua Kitiyakara (nee Mom Luang Bua Snidwongse). She was born on August 12, 1932 and attended kindergarten class at Rajini School, and subsequently went to St. Francis Xavier convent school at Samsen District in Bangkok. Her father became Thai Minister to France, then to Denmark and, ultimately, Ambassador to the Court of St. James in England. Her Majesty accompanied him and continued her education in the three countries and lastly in Switzerland. It was while her father was stationed in Paris that she first met His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was then studying in Switzerland but went now and then to Paris. The chance meeting in Paris ripened into friendship and understanding. When His Majesty met with a very serious motor accident in Geneva, Switzerland, and had to stay in a hospital at Lausanne, Her Majesty was a frequent visitor. When His Majesty was well again and left the hospital, he was graciously pleased to arrange for Her Majesty to continue her studies at Riante Rive, a boarding school in Lausanne.

On July 19, 1949, Their Majesties were quietly engaged in Lausanne. On March 24, 1950, Their Majesties landed in Bangkok by ship after a long absence. On April 28 of the same year, the royal wedding took place at Pathumwan Palace. Queen Sirikit is well known for her charitable work, where she is the honorary president of the Thai Red Cross, a post she has held since 1956. She has also been active in relief work for the many refugees from Cambodia and Burma in Thailand.

Over 20 Golf Courses Pattaya features over twenty golf courses, and many avid golfers who live in Bankok choose their second homes in Pattaya for their proximity to the golf courses.

Bangpra Golf Course is probably the most well-known golf course in Pattaya. It was one of the first courses to be built in the area, in 1958, and was updated in 1988. The course has a lot of variety and has lovely views of the sea. There is even a troop of monkeys that live around holes 6 and 7 that will liven things up. The second most well-known golf course in Pattaya is the Burapha Golf Course. It was previously a member’s only club when it opened in 1995, but has since become open to the public and has hosted several professional golf tournaments, most recently the 2010 Thailand Open. The course has a very classic design that is reminiscent of American golf courses, all of the greens are perfectly manicured and cleverly incorporate the

and is located in the hills of Rayong and is one of the most beautiful courses in the area. It is a challenging highland terrain course. The course is located among beautiful natural foliage and bodies of water. The park even offers access to other outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, canoeing, fishing, and camping to allow golfers to fully enjoy stunning scenery.

beautiful natural trees and water of the landscape. There are also several resorts in Pattaya that feature lovely golf courses. The most notable of these is the Eastern Star Country Club and Resort. It is located on a coconut palm plantation, and the course winds its way through 530 acres of resort land. Other resort golf courses include Greenwood Golf and Resort (formerly known as Noble Place), Natural Park Resort, and Pattana Golf Club and Resort. These golf courses also feature the added bonus of allowing guests to relax in the spa or pool after the game is over, or grab a drink at the resort bar.

A golfer’s visit to Pattaya would not be complete without a visit to the Siam Country Club. The club was the first privately owned golf course in Thailand, and was recently renovated, in 2007. There are three golf courses at the club, the “Old Course”, which was the first one to be built, the Plantation Course, and the Waterside Course. All three courses have hosted several international golf tournaments.

Another notable course in Pattaya is the Wangjuntr Golf and Nature Park. It is very unique because of its location 6

Ahoy There! If the famous pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, was still around today, he would be forgiven for not wanting to embark on a journey to Pattaya last month, as Buzzin Media group set sail on the wonderful Admirillica Pirate ship armed with 72 eager pirates all from the Baan Jing Jai Orphanage. The day couldn’t have started any better with the sun in all its glory beaming down on the beautiful Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Jomtien. Harbour Master Scott Finsten had kindly given his blessing for all the eager pirates to board the Admirillica from the stunning marina. With everyone onboard the Admirillica in all its glory set sail and headed out to sea. The children’s faces were priceless as they waited with eager anticipation as to what Buzzin and Admirillica had in store for the day. The Admirillica is itself a breathtaking replica pirate ship that could easily slip its way into the next Pirates Of The Caribbean set. Armed with replica cannons, a mighty ships wheel and crows nest as well as all the furnishings you would expect from a pirate ship, the scene was truly set. Heading out to sea the fun and laughter could be heard from all around as the children explored every inch of the ship. Dressed in red pirate bandanas and colourful face painting, the children were in all their glory, for many they had not seen the sea before let alone boarded a full sized pirate ship. So with lunch polished off,

and hats off to the staff of the Admirillica who fed all 130 people on board with great food without any issues at all, it was time for the games. The kids loved having so much fun running around, chasing balloons, team working, cheering, screaming and so much laughter the Admirillica could be heard for miles around.

the answer in your hands. Buzzin as a media company has grown from strength to strength over the last 9 month, yes that’s right, 9 months! What started off as a group of committed individuals has turned into a strong and very determined team who are set on bringing a much needed fresh and clean approach to Pattaya. We all live in this wonderful city and Pattaya has so much to offer and for many it passes by without notice. So as almost the final piece of the Buzzin jigsaw, the Lifestyle Publication was launched to bring this information to hand.

Buzzin had asked local people and companies to donate any unwanted cuddly toys and a big thank you goes to John from Collingbourne Auctions, Koy from Treesara and Dave and Howard from The Booze lounge who all gave so generously. Watching the children enjoy the day out as well as take away a cuddly toy really was a truly rewarding experience for all involved. Fortunately for the Buzzin team there was no walking the plank demanded by the mini pirates, although secretly there was a nomination already in place should the situation arise, fortunately for the Buzzin nominee he got away with it which was probably not a bad thing as no doubt he would not have had his goggles and perhaps his swimming trunks may have fell down...... yes you know who you are! The day went so well, all the children from the Baan Jing Jai Orphange had had a memorable day out and all who came along and joined in commended Buzzin and Admirillica on a really well organised and fun day. So what was all this about, well as you are reading our second issue of Buzzin Lifestyle you have 8

Yes we live in a world of digital media and yes in split seconds and a press of a few buttons information can be shared worldwide, however, print still has its place in the advertising world and for some, a morning coffee or spot of lunch isn’t the same without a good old fashioned

paper to read. The good news is that Buzzin have both digital and print so either way we ensure maximum exposure! The unique and exciting part of Lifestyle is the way not only has it been structured with layout and content (don’t worry you are not going to be bombarded with for sale adverts or past events that have already happened) but instead Lifestyle is an “in your shoes” publication delivering information on what is happening ahead as well as useful tips, information and places to visit. Buzzin is committed to getting it right and so as each issue continues to grow and develop, feedback is always vital to any success, please feel free to have your say by sending us an email: Trevor@buzzinmediagroup.com

Bangkok - Off The Beaten Track This month, we take a look at some of the more unusual places to visit in Bangkok. You won’t find many of these places in the guide books but each offers something a little different to enjoy. The shrine of the goddess Tubtim is located in the grounds of the Swissotel Nai Lert Park right in the heart of Bangkok. A spirit house was built by Nai Lert, for the spirit who was believed to reside in the large Sai tree. Chao Mae Tubtim is a female fertility god and women visit the shrine when they are trying to conceive. The shrine is adorned with literally hundreds of penises, from small wooden carvings to big stone sculptures standing more than 10 feet tall. A little different is Pak klong Talad or fresh flower market. It is the largest wholesale and retail fresh flower market in Bangkok and has a truly amazing array of flowers and colour. The market is just to the south of Wat Pho and has access to a river pier which means it is a great stop to make when combined with the attractions in the Old City. If you are a night owl, then one of the busiest times at the market is around 2am when there are literally hundreds of deliveries of new flowers taking place. The Scala Cinema in Siam Square offers a more modest one screen experience compared to the usual Identikit cinema mega complexes. It was built in 1967 and is decorated throughout in an art-deco style, even if you are not planning on watching a movie,

it is well worth the trip just to see the amazing domed-ceiling entrance. it is easy to find and is just a 5 minute walk from Siam BTS station and you will see the film showing displayed in red letters, each put up by hand. The Rama IX Park is the largest green space in Bangkok, with a beautiful botanic garden, large lakes and architecture with inspiration taken from around the world. The park was built in 1987 to commemorate the 60th Birthday of The King and the centre piece of the park is a beautiful golden building with a huge spire. The building also serves as a gallery celebrating the King’s life and work. The best way of getting to the park is by taxi as public transport options are limited, Take the BTS to Udom Suk and then just jump in a cab.

Rabbit Resort - An Oasis In Pattaya Tripadvisor has 393 hotels listed in Pattaya and many thousands of reviews. The Rabbit Resort is officially ranked as Pattaya’s No.2 Hotel. The hotel is located right on Dongtan beach, which is the undisputed best and most vibrant gay beach in Thailand and within a very short walk of the resort is the Jomtien complex which has numerous gay and gay friendly bars and restaurants. The hotel itself sits on 4 acres of beach front land and consists of 49 rooms/villas tucked away in a green oasis, indeed Rabbit Resort

is the last Thai beach house resort left in Pattaya and with the low density of the villas you will always have a sense of space. Each room and house has been individually designed and each represents the Thai luxury lifestyle, there are two separate pools at the resort, one quiet one for adults and a fun one for families. Rabbit Resort is family owned, with the owners also living at the resort and they, along with their staff take great pride in giving the highest levels of service, and who are we to argue with over 1,300 reviews.

The Bondi Beach Bar

An institution in Pattaya, directly overlooking the gay area of Dongtan beach, they offer accommodation, food and a busy bar that is open 24 hours a day. All of the rooms are en-suite and offer a sea view. At the bar, there is a wide range of European and Thai food available with an all day English breakfast for only 90 baht. There are daily drinks promotions as well as nightly live entertainment. Their now infamous Wednesday night bingo is a great evening, with loads of prizes on offer and a great way to meet new friends. On the last Sunday of every month is quiz night raising funds for Thais4life. The Bondi Bar really is a must visit whilst you are in Pattaya and you can always be sure of a warm welcome from your hosts Colin and Malcolm. Now available is a lifetime discount card for just 500 baht that gives you a 10% discount, that can be used not only in Pattaya but also at the Telephone Bar and Balcony Bar in Bangkok. Pattaya’s Own Hill Tribe In the late 80’s and 90’s, due to military conflict in Burma, the North West of Thailand saw a large influx of refugees. One of these groups were the Kayan people, who are a sub group of the Red Karen people. The Kayan Lahwi people are famed for the brass coils worn around the neck that give the impression of extended necks. A 2004 estimate gave the number of Kayan people living in Thailand at 130,000 and of these, about 600 living in 3 villages near Chiang Mai which are open to the public. There is, however, a new village right here in Pattaya where you can visit the Kayan people and witness their craftsmanship weaving elaborate scarves, clothing and ornaments all available for purchase. The village itself is located just off the Pattaya bypass road at the junction after Chaiyaphruk when heading towards Jomtien. The village has only very recently opened and is catering at the moment for an almost exclusive Chinese market and is currently a virtually unknown destination for everyone else in Pattaya. The Chinese tour guides shepherd their herd from the busses straight to the awaiting elephants who diligently ferry their load around the village for about 30 minutes. After experiencing the elephant ride, they are free to wander around market stalls and

15

purchase goods made by the hill top tribe as well as the ubiquitous photo opportunities. Our suggestion, would be to skip the elephant ride (there are plenty of better locations to go for a trek in Pattaya) and just take a walk around the village and souvenir stalls. The market stalls are selling the usual tourist trinkets that you can find at any market in Pattaya but once you have passed the main section of stalls you will see the entrance to the Long Neck tribal village. If you are going to make any purchases, then this is where we suggest you make them, at least benefit the local community! There are about 60 people living in the village and it is fascinating watching the scarves and shawls all being weaved by hand. You also have numerous photo opportunities in and around the village. In much the same way that the Floating Market in Pattaya is a man made attraction for tourists, the village and elephant riding is the same. Depending on your point of view, it is either a place created to exploit tourists and villagers alike, or a fascinating insight into a culture that is in rapid decline. Ethics aside, we feel it is a place worth visiting and purchasing goods from the villagers helps to provide them with an income which would otherwise be nonexistent.

Rainy Season for Kids When the sun is shining it is easy to keep the kids entertained but now that we are in the middle of the rainy season the beach is of course a little less appealing!

12 years of age it is a great fun experience with many rooms of interactive scenes.

to say, the costs can add up fairly quickly if you are doing more than one activity at Central.

Pattaya does though, as you would expect, have a whole lot of rain proof activities that are great fun for all of the family.

For the younger kids if you are out shopping or need to fill an hour or so, there is a wonderful soft play area on the 4th Floor (Next door to Toys ‘R’ Us) at Central Festival, which is also fully supervised.

The Teddy Bear Museum on Beach Road is one of our favourites and for kids up to 10-

Just next to the soft play area there is also a haunted house and fun house. Although I have

On Pattaya 2nd Road, just near the Dolphin Roundabout you will find the Art in Paradise Museum, this is another firm favourite of the Buzzin Team and is great for kids and adults alike. Do remember to take your camera with you as you will literally take hundreds of photos. The museum is a complete gallery of paintings that, when viewed or photographed form the correct angle appear to be 3D. At The Avenue Shopping Centre there is the Big O Bowling Alley and, of course, there are the usual array of cinemas all around town just be sure to choose the correct language film! All of the major hotels in Pattaya, also cater well for children and the majority have kids clubs that are also open to non residents as well as residents. The Royal Cliff Hotel for example has a very extensive daily program for children that covers from the age of 3 years up and includes different activities such as clay model making, cooking and drawing. Whereas the Centara Grand Mirage has its own large soft play area which is also well supervised for hotel guests and dining customers alike. More at buzzinmediagroup.com

Essentials Rain or Shine, Pattaya is a wonderful place full of activities for children, and we all know that when on holiday if the children are happy then everyone is happy. Here are our Buzzin top tips for rainy Pattaya: 1. Check the hotel programme and kids club (Even if you are nonresident you can still normally use them for a fee) 2. There are lots of soft play areas around town, but few have good supervision. The one on the 4th Floor of Central Festival, Pattaya Beach does. 3. Pattaya - City of Culture

“City of Culture” are not the first words that spring to mind for most visitors to Pattaya, but rest assured, Pattaya has far more than its fair share of things for the aspiring “culture vulture” The most recent permanent addition to the Pattaya scene is the Love Art Park. Love Art Pattaya is the brain child of Korean Song Seo and together with his company Siam Art World they have created a wonderful park covering over 49,000 square meters with literally hundreds of erotic sculptures. The sculptures themselves have been created over a period of 2 years by talented Korean sculptors. Their goal is to add an additional 50 pieces to the park with sculptors coming from around the world.

wonderful tranquil beauty spot and of course vineyard, but it was also host to one of the most popular annual music festivals in Thailand. Unfortunately, due to the political situation in Thailand, 2013 became the last year that the festival was held. This month though, the 29th August sees a return to music at Silverlake with Singha presenting a day with over 13 different Thai bands playing to what is expected to be a huge audience, with some of the big Thai bands such as Moderndog playing (think Thai version of Radiohead), Playground & Vassana all confirmed.

The park has only been open for a few months and there is so much more to come. Currently under construction are the indoor art gallery, concert hall, cafeteria, and the art shop. In Song Seo’s own words: “The sculptures are made by professional artists to reflect the beauty and sentiment of the human body with eroticism, humor and wit; which allows the visitors to interact with them” Silverlake is famous as a 17

The Dark Side is Changing

Every month, there seems to be something new going on on Pattaya’s Darkside, this month is no exception with several recently opened bars and restaurants providing even more options for the local ex-pats and tourists alike. On Khao Noi, PJ’s bar is unfortunately no more, whilst the Sunday Roasts and Karaoke nights will be missed the area is currently being rebuilt and will open shortly as “Murphys Irish Pub” We hear that they intend to incorporate the swimming pool that sits behind the bar and take the best of “Murphys Law” from LK Metro with them. For now though, we will have to be content with the great food and roasts provided by “The Casual Bar” just a few doors up the road. On Soi Khao Talo, a new restaurant called SIB has just opened next to Siam Royal View

(The village at the top of Khao Talo with the Elephant statues), They provide a wonderful range of food and drinks in a unique atmosphere and join the existing top quality restaurants like Livv and Pepper & Salt also on Soi Khao Talo.

and is still proving to be a great location for Dark-Siders to enjoy live music. Jomtien’s famous Shenanigans bar has now firmly established its self as a favourite up at the lake and despite some initial opening teething problems, it is now all systems-go with a great menu.

At the bottom of Soi Khao Talo, next to the White Horse pub is a new dessert restaurant, which at the time of writing is still under contruction but looks to be yet another promising location in the area.

On Soi 87 Mirabel Resort has extended its French Cuisine menu and remains one of our favourite family and dog friendly places on the Dark Side. Indeed, where else can you have a great meal, crazy golf and swim in the pool with your dog!

Out towards the lake, The Venue is now under new ownership

Mirabel Crazy Golf. Soi 87 18

Essentials The Dark Side covers the area in Pattaya to the East of Sukhumvit Road. It is a very popular area with ex-pats, since it is still close to Pattaya city but at the same time is a much quieter location. You won’t find any of the highrise condominiums on The Dark Side, but you will find a lot of independent restaurants and bars as well as an abundance of fishing lakes, magnificent scenery, local markets and temples to explore. From the higher points on The Dark Side, you can also get some great views of Pattaya.

The re-entry form at the Thai Immigration is called a TM8 and can be downloaded before you arrive at the Immigration office, or they have many available there.

Do I Need a re-entry permit? If you have a long stay visa for Thailand and you wish to cross a land border or leave via the airport, then you must obtain a re-entry permit or risk losing your long stay visa!

If you do not have a re-entry permit when you arrive back into Thailand, you will have to start the whole process again of obtaining a non-immigrant and visa extension.

The re-entry permit is designed to protect your visa so if you leave Thailand when you return your visa will still be intact and you will have no fear of it being taken away from you.

When you have a one year visa and you think you may be leaving Thailand then it is advisable to obtain a re-entry permit in advance of travelling just in case you need to leave quickly or you have an emergency.

Teg’s Tackle

Giant Fishing Park and Resort, is one of the only two lakes in Pattaya which stocks predator species, the other being The Amazon Fishing Park. The fishing here is slightly on the expensive side, but for

the serious angler it may be worth that extra cost if you want to catch one of the large predators there. Take into consideration that the cost includes transport, tackle, bait and a meal. The Amazon Fishing Park has larger fish but it is far more expensive to fish there.

The Thai re-entry permit is offered in two formats: a single entry or a multiple entry which allows you to go in and out of Thailand as many times as you desire and your visa will be protected until its expiry date. The multiple entries seem to be the favourite amongst expats residing or working in Thailand. For more information, see www.keyvisathailand.com Catfish, Snakehead, Arapaima, Tiger Catfish, Alligator Gar, Pacu, Spotted Catfish, Striped Catfish, Walking Catfish and a few other non-predatory species. The cost of 2,500 Baht includes transport, tackle & bait and a meal. There is no discount given if you decide to take your own fishing tackle. Transport and a meal for people not fishing attracts a 500 Baht charge. Additional food and drinks are available throughout the day. The Park is open between 8am to 8pm and they can be contacted on: 080 821

The Giant Fishing Park and Resort is extremely well maintained and is set in what was once a quarry. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful. Species include Amazon Giant Red Tailed 20
