Valentines day wasn’t always quite the romantic affair it is today though, in the pre Christian era the 13th-15th February was celebrated as a pagan fertility festival. It was marked in a subtly different way in those days, however. According to Noel Lenski, classics professor at the
University of Colorado at Boulder, speaking in the National Geographic, young men would strip naked and use goat- or dog-skin whips to spank the backsides of young women in order to improve their fertility.

Both ends of the cord are attached to a caged steel vehicle in which 2 riders are seated. The vehicle is pulled to the ground, where riders board. When the vehicle is released from the loading station, the cords engage, sending riders on a high-speed vertical launch 50 meters into the air at speeds of 100 KPH in one second and 5G force power. Go Panthers! Have you heard about rugby in Pattaya? Sounds like the start of a dirty bar joke. No need to cover your Puritan ears. The club has been in existence since 1998. Playing rugby union brings together an eclectic group every Thursday, at 7:00 pm on the hallowed grounds of Horse Shoe Point. With over 12 nationalities represented and six languages spoken, ASEAN should be taking notes on how crosscultural teams work. Ages range from youngish to mature. Abilities cover the spectrum between, “what’s this?” to “when I was a….” What matters is that there is quality rugby being played in Pattaya.
Players from Bangkok and the Navy occasional join the training sessions and partake in the games. Panthers’ players participate with other teams in various competitions – it’s an open arrangement. There is no competitive national league in Thailand per se. Local competitions exist (British Council Cup, Chindara Cup, etc.) but mostly Bangkokcentric. However, there are regular weekend competitions throughout the country and regions in which the club participates. Bangkok 10s, Phuket 10s, Manila 10s and Vientiane 10s are but a few.

Bangkoks Giant Swing At 27 meters (88 feet) tall, Bangkok’s Giant Swing dwarfs nearby Wat Suthat and other surrounding buildings. The swing was originally built in 1784, under the direction of King Rama I. Since then weather damage has required several restorations, including a recent renovation completed in 2007. For this project, workers used six massive teak tree trunks (each more than 20 meters tall and approximately 200 years old) to construct a new swing. For centuries, the Giant Swing played a central role in annual swing ceremonies that symbolically reenacted elements of Hindu origin stories. In Hindu mythology Brahma tested the stability
of the newly created world by ordering Shiva to stand on a mountain while giant snakes tried to shake him to the ground. The swing ceremony had teams of Thai men in elaborate headdresses competing to launch themselves into the air,
where they would use their teeth catch a sack of coins tied to the top of a pole 25 meters (or more) above the ground. The stability of the swing and presumed success of the swingers represented the unshakable Shiva of Hindu legend. The ceremony was

discontinued in 1935 after several participants fell to their deaths. In 2005 the Giant Swing and Wat Suthat were nominated as a future UNESCO World Heritage Site. The swing and temple is just 1 kilometer from the Grand Palace.
