Pattaya: There’s So Much To Do

2,287 places offering accommodation, more than 700 restaurants and over 300 things to do you will never have a bored moment in town.

Pattaya continues to evolve and grow at an enormous pace, according to TripAdvisor there are now more places to stay in Pattaya and more things going on than in any other city in Thailand. November is no different, with so many great things going on all around town. The International Fireworks Festival takes place towards the end of the month, as does the Loi Krathong festival, both events promising over

100,000 people in attendance. We also have the 4th annual boat show at Ocean Marina, which is increasing in popularity every year and Ocean Marina itself can now boast to be the largest marina in South East Asia. Just a short drive up the road to Bangsaen, which plays host to the 2015 Festival of Speed which is the biggest event in the motor sports history of Thailand.

Doi Inthanon, Thailands highest mountain

Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest mountain is located in Chiang Mai Province. Standing at an impressive 2565 meters high, this beautiful mountain range towers over the Doi Inthanon National Park as well as the Karen Hill Tribe Village. Tha National Park stretches over 485 km² and at the highest point of the mountain, temperatures still remain in the mid teens (Celsius), however, the temperature has been know to

drop below zero during the winter months so if you do pay a visit be sure to wrap up warm, as it’s a far cry from the wonderful hot sunny days we experience here in Pattaya.

probably the best place in Thailand for you to visit as the park boasts a habitat of some 360 different species of birds, now that will keep your binoculars busy that’s for sure!

On the main road to the summit of Doi Inthanon stand two adjacent chedis, one called Naphamethinidon, meaning “by the strength of the land and air”, and the other, Naphaphonphumisiri, meaning “being the strength of the air and the grace of the land”. These

Getting to the summit is all pretty well sign-posted. The roads are very good. If you don’t fancy driving yourself, there are many tour operators who will take you for around 2,000 baht.

To get there buses leave Pattaya daily and take approximately 11 hours at a cost of 925 Baht or you could take a train from Bangkok which bizarrely takes just as long but is far more scenic!

South Pattaya Road 200m before Big C Loi Krathong is an annual festival that takes place on the evening of the full moon on the 12th Lunar month. This year, the day is celebrated on the 25th November. Loi Krathong is a huge event all across Thailand and is a wonderful spectacle to observe and partake in. The Kratong itself is traditionally made from a slice of the trunk of Banana tree or spider lily plant. A Kratong is decorated with elaborately folded Banana leaves, flowers, 3 incense sticks, 3 candles and often a coin as well. The Krathong is then launched into either a pond, canal or the ocean with a wish and is seen as a way of sending troubles away and bringing luck. In Pattaya, you will find thousands of people all along the main beaches along with many vendors selling pre-made Kratongs. (Please do help the environment by not purchasing the styrofoam based Kratongs, these take many years to biodegrade.) The sight is really quite beautiful to see hundreds of Kratongs gently bobbing in the ocean. In addition to the Krathongs many people let off fireworks as well as traditional lanterns into the night sky which make for a beautiful vista all across town. If you have never seen Loi Kratong before, you are in for a wonderful treat and it is a sight not to be missed, just head down to beach road anytime after dark and get involved in what is a wonderful festival.

Mark Stainton-James

IT’S ALL GOING UP IN SMOKE Hot on the heels of Loi Krathong, sees the annual Fireworks Festival on the 27th and 28th November. The second not to be missed event this November is the annual Fireworks Festival. Strictly speaking, it is an international competition and show case of the latest firework display techniques over two consecutive nights. It is an amazing spectacle that you can view from all over Pattaya, it is in fact impossible to miss wherever you are in town. On the 27th, each country competing gives a short snippet of their main show, then on the 28th there is a full 45 minute show. Expect Pattaya to be incredibly busy both evenings, whilst the firework shows don’t start until 9pm, there is a really party atmosphere in town with over 100,000 people expected to attend. Beach Road itself will be closed for traffic and instead will be replaced with many vendors selling food, beverages, souvenirs and handicrafts. If you would prefer to watch the show away from the crowds, then one of the best places is from the sea. There are a number of boat operators from Ocean Marina who are taking groups of people out to watch the display and many also include dinner whilst enjoying the amazing show. If you haven’t booked in advance, then head to Bali Hai Pier where you can be certain that there will be a number of speedboat operators willing to take you out to see the show - just remember to bargain hard on the price. For the landlubbers, almost every hotel in town with a view will be putting on a special event for the evenings. The Horizon Bar at the Hilton Hotel offers probably some of the best views, being situated right in the middle of Beach Road. Where ever you choose to watch the fireworks from, get there early. Seats fill up at every venue early and this is one show in town you really don’t want to miss out on. Find out more on which places have the best offers at buzzinmediagroup.com 6

Buzzin TV presenters Trevor and Tanya visited The Teddy Bear Museum located on Beach Road recently and what a fun time they had. The name is almost misleading as it’s not a traditional museum and more of a fantastic play area. Several theme based activity areas are laid out where children of all ages can learn about dinosaurs, animals and even excavation methods digging for fossils. Its a fantastic way for all the family to spend a few hours and have some fun. Once inside you follow a pathway through all the areas so keeping your children close by isn’t an issue. Once you have worked your way through each area you finally end up at the gift shop where you can purchase a lovely little cuddly bear as a keepsake to remind you of your wonderful adventure. To see more why not go onto YouTube and search for Buzzin TV and you can watch Trevor and Tanya as they explore this amazing attraction, see who is the biggest kid out of the pair of them!! www.youtube.com and search for BUZZIN TV (BUZZIN TV Sophon Channel 6 - 12pm and 8pm) 8

Cadillacs to French Chandeliers Rot Fai Market (Train Market) in Bangkok is an authentic open-air bazaar selling an incredible array of vintage collectables and memorabilia from yesteryear, from antique furniture to hippy fashion and Mao kitsch.

Rod Fai Market - Courtesy of Rod Fai Market

With three sections to this huge market space, there are also many traders selling modern fashion and apparel more typical of other night markets in Bangkok; however it’s the one-off and hard to find items that really make Rot Fai Market superior to all other night markets in the city. Where else in Thailand would you find a pristine 1950s Cadillac next to vintage leather jackets, French chandeliers and 1960s action figures from Japan? Combine all this with cool restaurants, bars and snack stalls and you have a fun night out from sunset to midnight, Thursday to Sunday.

so you could consider taking the BTS Skytrain to On Nut Station first, then catching a taxi from there.

Rot Fai Market is located on Srinakarin Soi 51, just behind Seacon Square Shopping Mall. The best way to get there is via taxi – all drivers should know Seacon Square. However, traffic can be bad on Friday and Saturday nights

The original Rot Fai Market garnered a massive reputation at its former location next to the train tracks (hence the name) behind Chatuchak Market in the north of the city. When it was forced to move in 2013 due to

an expansion of the BTS Skytrain line, many thought it was the end for this unique venture, but thankfully it returned at this new site and is bigger and better than ever. There might not be any trains but there is a lot more space for traders to display their beautiful and strange collections in different sections, namely the ‘Market Zone’, ‘Warehouse Zone’ and ‘Rod’s Antiques’.

Picture: Rod Fai Market

In the Warehouse Zone, the sheer variety of products available is impressive. You will find everything from household goods, old electronic appliances and used auto parts to secondhand clothes, shoes and fashion accessories – all vintage in style, of course. Many vendors are also collectors of vintage, so it’s not uncommon to see hobbyist items such as old cameras, bikes, CocaCola collectibles and Japanese anime toys on sale as well. Best of all, traders are friendly without Bangkok’s expat bar scene has transformed in recent years away from its adult entertainment and Anglo/Celtic theme pub orientation into something a little more diverse and vibrant encompassing arthouse, craft beer and innovative music venues. One of the bars leading that trend is Overground Bar + Café, one floor up but themed a little like an underground train station. What characterises Overground is its commitment to all things diverse. For example, the first Saturday of each month it hosts Bangkok 10

being pushy so you can browse and explore at your leisure without the feeling of being part of a tourist trap. The real premium standout items at Rot Fai Market are displayed in a converted factory-type building called Rod’s Antiques. This is a trove of antiques and vintage items including classic cars, motorbikes, antique and kitsch furniture and even a life-size Elvis mannequin. Photographers are allowed to snap away although you are asked not to touch anything as these items are rare and have a price tag to match. One of the biggest differences here is that all vintage items are guaranteed to be genuine, sourced from all over the world: America, China, Myanmar, Europe, and Thailand. Additional information provided by Asia Web Direct. Hilarious, a revue of professional and open mic stand-up comedians from the UK, Australia and America as well as locations farther afield such as Indonesia, Vietnam and Eastern Europe. Another monthly event is Bangkok Lyrical Lunacy, which features original verse, song and slam poetry. Other nights see top international DJs Overground is situated in Sukhumvit Soi 22, 100m down the soi and opposite the Holiday Inn. Open 6pm-1am

This museum showcases a unique collection of historic artifacts, statues and data that really does make an interesting and informative visit! The museum is believed to be one of a kind outside of China.

The Viharn Sien is a beautifully crafted Chinese building that really is a work of art, however, once you step inside you enter a whole new world as statues and historic data jumps out at you as it is home to some priceless and rare Chinese artifacts and antiques.

Surrounding the Temples is a large lake where you can feed the

The Viharn Sien is also called Viharnra Sien, which means House of the Gods, and was built in 1987 for the current King of Thailand’s 60th birthday, King Bhumibol Adulyadej or Rama IX of the Chakri dynasty. Anek Kuson Sala is in a well kept area of almost 3 acres, the museum sits next to a beautiful lake on the Wat Yansangwararam Temple complex. The museum, which is also known as Wihan Sian or Anek Kuson Sala houses one of the best Chinese art collections in Thailand. Before entering the building you can see a number of Chinese mythological figures and two enormous stone Peking lions. Inside the museum there is a collection of fine Chinese pottery from several dynasties, one of them the Shang dynasty, making this pottery at least 3,000 years old. Also on display are the statues of 18 Shaolin monks, all displaying a martial art form for which the 15 centuries old Shaolin Monastery in China is famous. Inside the central building are the hand made terracotta figures of 8 arhats, who are the followers of the Buddha that have reached a high stage of Enlightenment. A great number of precious antiques, paintings, statues and artwork are displayed here, some of which were a gift from the Chinese government. Now for a real and very exciting 16

journey through history once you step outside onto the forecourt you are greeted by some very unique items like a number of figures of terracotta warriors and horses, chariots from the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi as well as a golden throne can be viewed. This is one of the very few places where a terracotta army like this can be seen, especially outside of China. Apart from that the museum houses a large number of other items, such as granite carvings, old paintings, bronze and earthenware, sculptures of Chinese Gods, Buddha statues and a jade statue of Guanyin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. Some items are from the famous Chinese Ming dynasty. One section of the Viharn Sien is dedicated to Thai art and history. Here you can see a number of paintings showing the history of some of Thailand’s great Kings, such as King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and King Taksin, under whose rule Siam was freed from Burmese occupation. Apart from a museum, the Anek Kuson Sala, the Thai name for Viharn Sien, is also a place for worshipping Chinese Gods So if you fancy learning all about Chinese history then this is the place to visit.
