Speed Up Your

Morning Routine!

Wish you could stay in bed a little longer? Take up these tips for some extra sleeping time. By Amanda Tan

THE DAY BEFORE Easy Recipes for School

Get Your Mane Clean

Make these for tasty bites throughout the week!

Every girl blessed with long and beautiful locks faces a common problem: drying it fast. And stepping out with soaked hair wetting the back of your blouse is not a good look. Sure, you can use a hair dryer, but it damages hair and removes its lustre. Shampoo the night before, or use dry shampoo to avoid any greasiness during the day.

Granola Bars

Shave At Night A good tip for both guys and girls, shaving when you’re not in a mad rush will prevent missed spots, accidental nicks and let your skin heal as you snooze to reduce any inflammation.

What You Need:

What You Need:

• Large mixing bowl • 2 cups quick cooking oats • 1 cup rice crispy cereal • ¼ cup chopped nuts • ¼ cup butter • ¼ cup honey • ½ cup brown sugar • ½ tsp salt • ½ tsp vanilla extract • Saucepan • Spatula

• 4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted • 3 cups sugar • 2 cups butter, softened • ¾ cup milk • 6 large eggs • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • Mixing bowl • Electric mixer • Baking pan • Spoon

Step 1: Preheat oven to

Check The Weather

165 degree Celsius. Layer the ingredients in the order listed in a mixing bowl. Beat the ingredients at low for one minute with an electric mixer, then raise the speed to medium for another two minutes. Stop occasionally to scrape down the sides.

The weather is so unpredictable these days, so doing some research won’t hurt. Before your week begins, or just before you fall asleep, check if it’ll be raining cats and dogs the next day or if it’s going to be exceptionally sunny. Not only will that mean you don’t have to change outfits at the last minute and tote along an umbrella, it will also let you know if you should plan to head out earlier since everything from traffic to walking to your destination takes longer when it’s pouring.

Prep Your Lunch Beforehand If you’re the type who likes bringing food to school, spend some time making your meal the night before. Not only will your food taste much better with proper preparation, but you won’t have to run around the kitchen frantically gathering ingredients while checking the time too. While you’re in the kitchen, fill up your bottle as well and put your things by the door so you won’t forget.

04

Pound Cake

Step 1: In the mixing bowl, mix the oats, cereal and nuts. Then, melt the butter in a small saucepan. Add honey, brown sugar and salt into the saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2: When the mixture in the pan boils, turn down the heat and let it boil continuously for two minutes. Step 3: After that, add the vanilla extract and pour the mixture over the oats. You can also add other treats like chocolate chips or cranberries. Mix the ingredients with the spatula and press it firmly into a greased pan. Then place the pan in the fridge for 20 minutes.

Step 2: Pour the batter into a greased and floured baking pan. Then, smooth out the surface with the back of the spoon. Step 3: Bake for 1 hour and 30 minutes and cool the cake on a wire rack. Remove it from the pan after 10 minutes and let it rest for another hour.

Your hair is so nice. Do you blow-dry it every morning?

You look awesome!

No, I just wash it the night before so it dries properly.

in the morning Be Grateful It’s hard to roll out of bed when you’re faced with dreaded homework submissions and tests. But if you look forward to something that gets you excited, like a gathering with friends at night or perhaps the end of your draggy project, you’ll have enough energy to propel you through the day. Being happy is always a good way to start your day.

Stagger Toilet Timings

Main Photo: getty images

Be glad that you don’t have seventeen other siblings like in the movie Yours, Mine and Ours. It would take ages to get access to the bathroom! If you share one, discuss with your family about when they’d like to use the washroom so no one wastes time waiting for others while getting grumpy. Also, don’t hog the toilet. Everyone’s in a rush to get out so don’t make the others late!

Brush Your Teeth While Showering This is as self-explanatory as it gets. Leave your toothbrush and toothpaste in the shower, and while you’re rinsing off the suds, brush your teeth at the same time. You can use those extra minutes you saved to have a healthy breakfast or slow down your walking pace so you’re not a sweaty mess when you reach class.

Rethink Your Beauty Products Multi-purpose items, like foundations with sunblock and moisturising properties, are great time savers. Mists are also efficient as you won’t have to spend time spreading and patting the products. Also, you might want to stock up on cleansing wipes, which you can use en route to school instead of having to wash up at the sink in the morning.

Get Dressed Last Ideally, you should plan your outfits a week or at least a day ahead. But if you haven’t done so, don’t lose precious minutes staring blankly at your rack of clothes in your groggy state after waking up. As you brush your teeth or take a shower, think about your outfit for the day as you become more lucid. It stops you from making a fashion faux pas too.

Revamping your back-to-school beauty kit? Makeup artist Larry Yeo gives advice on the items to splurge and scrimp on to make the best use of your money! By Yuen Yi Ying About Larry: Armed with a biotechnology education and plenty of years as a makeup artist, Larry’s beauty knowledge and scientific background has helped him build a name for himself in the beauty industry.

CLEANSER

Larry says: Remember, the facial wash has very little contact with skin and it will be washed into the drain, so using a good and affordable cleanser can stretch your dollar more!

FOUNDATION

Teenage picks! • Etude House Baking Powder B.B Deep Cleansing Foam, $16.90 • Bifesta 2-in-1 Cleansing Wash Moist, $14.90, selected Watsons and Sasa • L’Oreal Paris Hydra Fresh Hydrating Refreshing Creamy Foam, $12.90

MASCARA Larry says: There are good foundations in both

Larry says: You’re not so much paying for the formula as you are for the brush. Remember, the brush design itself determines 60 per cent of the outcome of your lashes, and some mass market brands have pretty good ones.

Teenage picks! • Majolica Majorca limited edition Lash Expander Edge Meister 17 Mascara, $25.90 • Essence Get Big Lashes Triple Black Mascara, $4.50, selected Watsons • Catrice Glamour Doll Volume Mascara Waterproof, $7.90, selected Guardian Health & Beauty stores

categories that make skin look naturally beautiful. However, while some affordably-priced ones are amazing to use and glide on like a dream, they don’t always have something for olive skin tone girls out there.

Teenage picks! • Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15, $60, Sephora, in 16 shades • Silkygirl Skin Perfect Liquid Foundation, $14.90, in four shades • Maybelline Dream Matte Liquid Mousse, $27.90, in nine shades

SUNSCREEN

BLUSH & LIP COLOUR

Larry says: At the end of the day, this is subjective depending on your skin tone and also whether you love the colours or not. The hues will be on your face the whole day, so they should evoke positive feelings in you, or you will never use them after buying the products.

Teenage picks! • Bourjois Blush Exclusif, $20.90, Watsons and selected department stores • Maybelline Lip Polish by Color Sensational in POP6, $19.90 • NYX Butter Gloss in Apple Strudel, $10, Sephora • Cargo Blush in Catalina, $41, BeautyBay.com

Larry says: Some cheap brushes can feel like sandpaper while expensive brushes can make your heart ache when bristles fall out. Still, some are affordable and good, but are pricey to buy separately. Get brush sets instead. They are better value-for-money buys.

Larry says: Not all sunscreens are made equal. The cheaper ones might work and come with great formulation, but the active ingredients may not be as stable or active as those in the pricier products.

Teenage picks! • Shiseido Perfect UV Protector SPF 50+ PA++++, $59 • Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA+++, $52 • Laneige Sun Block Supreme SPF 50+ PA+++, $36

makeup brushes

EYELINER & EYESHADOW

Teenage picks!

Larry says: The complex formula of the more well-known brands do tend to last longer so you don’t get smudges and panda eyes. Also, cheaper products usually never have a consistent colour-payoff.

• NARS Travel Brush Set, $128.71, Asos • Stila Tools Of The Trade 5 Piece Brush Collection, $46.40, BeautyBay.com • Sigma Beauty Mrs. Bunny Travel Kit, $95, Luxola

Teenage picks! • Le Metier de Beaute True Colour Eye Shadow in Platinum, $54, BeautyBay.com • Shu Uemura eyeshadow in Soft Purple, $22 • Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in 5 Diamond Turquoise Blue, $39 • M.A.C Pro Longwear Eye Liner in Definedly Black, $35

MOISTURISER

Larry says: Some

moisturisers may work amazingly well on others but might not work for you. I suggest you sieve through the gimmicks and claims and not just buy what people blog about. Drugstorepriced products don’t necessarily have lousy formulas, and expensive brands could still have • b.liv quench me moisturizing gel, $49.95, odd and unstable Sasa and www.bliv.com formulas considering the • Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector Gel, $15.90, price you pay.

A CUT ABOVE THE REST Geared with unparalleled hairstyling training, graduates from the Kimage Hairdressing School are now shaping their own bright future! With over a decade of experience under its belt, Kimage Hairdressing School has earned a reputation as a leading hairdressing education academy in Singapore. Many talented individuals who are ready to take their passion to the next level have trained under the school, and two fine examples are graduates Eri Su and J Png Junrong.

Eri Su | Key Artist at Chapter 2 Hairdressing “There is no lack of opportunities in Kimage. I had the chance to attend fashion shows, backstage events and even travel overseas to pick up more skills. Through hands-on activities, the school provided me with the experience of being a professional hairstylist. In this industry, you get to meet different people, unleash your creativity and learn a whole range of things. All you need is hard work, patience, commitment and confidence.”

J Png Junrong | Salon Asst Technical Test Salon Asia at

P&G International Operations S.S, Singapore

“Kimage is one of the most established academies locally, and it offered me a pleasant learning environment with all the equipment for my needs. The hair cutting modules were particularly enjoyable, as I was attracted to how professional hairdressers create hairstyles to transform a person’s appearance. I was also exposed to a real-life working culture, which was different from just being in the academy. The trade might be challenging at times, but it is fun!”

KIMAGE FACILITIES With an exciting range of campus facilities, students are able to receive the best educational experience within a fully equipped salon-school environment. Aside from the lecture room, the training grounds have two comfortable classrooms and four practical areas to provide students with hands-on practise on live models. Investments in the latest technology also ensure that students get to use high quality equipment for training.

You’re not willing to go really short, but you want something with a bit of edge that doesn’t take a lot of effort to do up. The cut which T-ara’s Ham Eun Jung sports should also be versatile enough to style and match the different looks you like to wear.

Things to consider: The bob will grow out quite fast so you need to go for regular trims every six to eight weeks. Also, you’ll need to style with wax to bring out the texture and tame the frizz. Ask for: A shaggy chin-length bob with

30-36 Brave Bob

You’ve practically tried every cut under the sun, so if you’re ready to take the plunge, why not go super short? Not only is this cut which Jennifer Lawrence and Amber sports attentiongrabbing, it’s totally hot right now and screams attitude, three factors that you love!

Things to consider: You’ll have to have strong facial features and high confidence to pull it off. And unless you’re staying home and not meeting anyone, there are no ‘off’ days for this look. You’ll have to style it with gel or mousse so get some tips from your hairdresser. This look might be pretty tough look to grow out, and you’ll need trims every six to eight weeks too. Ask for: A pixie cut with long top layers

and more volume around your crown, but with a cut this drastic, you should probably bring in a reference picture.

long layers and texture. You might need a body perm to achieve the tousled look.

swingy layers

You can’t remember the last time you changed your look, but your friends have been bugging you to try something new. A shoulder-sweeping long bob, like Chloe Moretz’s, is ideal for you. It’s a change, yet it’s not so short it’s shocking. Plus you can still tie it up and style it as usual.

Things to consider: This works best if you have straight or slightly wavy hair. It’s pretty low-maintenance, but you have to be careful to go for trims every two months or you’ll forget and grow it out again. Ask for: A shoulder-length bob with face framing layers. Ok, so you’re not keen on doing much with your locks, but you get bored easily, so you love experimenting with your hair. Like Lucy Hale, you don’t take things too seriously and like trying out the latest trends, such as a deep side part or a messy fishtail braid (sometimes all at once!). There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Just have fun with your hair!

Things to consider: If your hair is long, chances are, the ends are dry and frizzy. Don’t forget to go for regular trims and treatments. For a fail-safe way to pull off trends, try just one at a time.

12-17

great lengths

Ask for: Trims to get rid of split ends and hydrating nourishing treatments.

Fabulous Nails

have arrived!

No more putting up with bad nail days! We show you how you can get beautiful, healthy digits with these simple care tips from Sally Hansen.

The days of living with ugly nails for school are over! With proper care and maintenance, your digits can still look fabulous sans fancy paint and nail art.

1 2

Clean Your Tools Using dirty tools is the easiest way to catch a fungal infection, so remember to sanitise them before use.

Trim Your Cuticles

Wonder why it’s a must to trim your cuticles? Doing so often makes your nails look longer and your manicure last longer. Start by soaking your nails in warm water to soften the cuticles, then slowly push them back to trim.

3 4

Condition Dry Cuticles

Extremely dry cuticles can be very painful. Keep them hydrated with moisturising oils like Sally Hansen Vitamin E Nail & Cuticle Oil ($12.50).

Strengthen Brittle Nails

Troubled by nails that are prone to breakage? Apply a coat of Maximum Strength ($13.50), which is formulated with micro-minerals, protein and antioxidants that will make your damaged digits 50 per cent stronger than before.

5

Keep Them Short and Shaped

Nothing is uglier than uneven, long nails. File rough edges into a soft square (that’s about medium-length) before smoothing out any bumps on the nail surface with the No More Ridges buffer block, ($5).

If you are in an institute that allows you to dress up your digits a little, check out these school-friendly polishes.

Low battery is the bane of existence for all students, especially when you’re outside with no charger or powerpoints. This trusty battery saving app keeps your gizmos alive for longer so you won’t have to worry about your unsaved work crashing on you.

SleepyTime: Bedtime Calculator

Have you been waking up groggy even though you’ve gotten plenty of shut-eye? That’s because you woke up in the middle of one of your sleep cycles! Working on the theory that a full sleep cycle is 90-minutes long, this nifty app calculates the appropriate time you need to go to bed, according to the time you have to wake up. Sleeping according to the cycles makes you feel well-rested the next morning, even if you’ve been slogging past midnight!

leisure Audible

Listening to audio books probably yields twice the benefits of reading an actual book. For students with tight deadlines, this lets you multitask rather than sitting down with a paperback for hours. You can listen to a book while you’re on the way home, having lunch or doing mindless household chores.

Sworkit

Having so much piled on your plate often leaves little time for fitness, but you can now fit a customised workout into your schedule depending on how much time you have. If you want to squeeze in five minutes of pushups into your morning prep time, that’s fine too! The best thing about this app is that you can get your daily exercise without any equipment or hitting the gym!

8Tracks

Whether it’s a hardcore study session or a long bus ride to school, this versatile radio app has millions of mixes to suit your whims and fancies. Just type in whatever genre or mood you prefer and get into the groove! You can even create your own playlist so that you can combine all your favourite study tunes into one continuous loop!

Unsplurge

You’ve had your eyes on an awesome laptop or planning for a weekend trip with friends, so the last thing you’d want to do is to spend all your savings. Track your progress in this app and work towards your goal. Then get your friends into the program and encourage them to save for things they love as well!

Meets the Eye Thinking of trying a new look with cosmetic contact lenses? FreshKon® offers tips on what you should know before making your purchase! 1. Consult the experts

Lenses are not one-size-fits-all, so get an eye-care practitioner to help you pick the best pair. They’ll check your degree and the shape of your peepers. If you’re new to contacts, the FreshKon® Colors Fusion line might be a good starting range. It has high water content for comfortable wear and is designed to prevent curling so it’s easier to put the lens on your eyes. They also come in a variety of colours from beautiful brown to vibrant violet!

2. Learn proper handling

Eye infections are a pain, so keep your lenses clean. Whenever you put them on, keep your hands germ-free by washing with mild soap and drying your hands on a lint-free towel. Then, clean your lenses with a disinfecting solution like FreshKon® CLEAR i Multi-Purpose Solution. It removes bacteria and protein and also lubricates your lenses. Always ensure the contacts are correctly oriented and if the lenses are damaged, don’t use them! TEXT: AMANDA TAN

3. Don't sleep with your lenses

Snoozing restricts oxygen and lubrication from the cornea, which is the outermost layer of our eyes. So while lenses are permeable to oxygen, it’s best to take them out to give your peepers a breather.

4. Avoid over-wearing your lenses

Even if your lenses look fine past the prescribed period, never gamble with your eye health to save a few dollars. It doesn’t seem like there’s anything wrong, but bacteria and lens deposits could have accumulated in your lenses, increasing your chances of an infection. In the end, you’d be spending more on medical fees. Never wear your lenses beyond the period recommended by your Eye Care Professional.

5. Buy from authorised retailers

You can never be sure of the safety of lenses bought online or from dodgy shops or push carts. They can’t be vouched for as their manufacturing processes are unknown. This could potentially harm your corneas with infections or worse still, lasting injuries like blindness. FreshKon® products are manufactured in accordance to the quality assurance system ISO 9001 / ISO 13485 requirements and meet the Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC. OVERSEAS EDUCATION

DISTANCE LEARNING

JUNIOR COLLEGE

POLYTECHNIC

Great for students who wish to experience a different educational system; an overseas education gives you a chance to learn to be independent. You may not receive the same subsidies that local students get, so be prepared to fork out a higher school fee and living expenses. You may also need an additional year of foundation studies or take additional tests like TOEFL and SAT.

If you wish to obtain an internationally-recognised qualification but don’t want to incur the cost of studying abroad, distance learning courses are the best alternative. Most schools offer advance standing, so you can graduate faster than your peers in polytechnics. But do bear in mind that the programme fees may be relatively higher than in local institutions.

For those who prefer to ease into tertiary studies, the junior college system, which uses a classroom approach that is similar to that of secondary schools, is a great alternative. Going to one is commonly regarded as the ‘easier way’ to get into a local university, but taking two years to study for the A-Levels can be stressful to some students.

Students who wish to concentrate on their desired field of study will appreciate the handson approach and internship opportunities offered by local polytechnics, which gives them a smoother transition into the working world. The flexible timetable also allows them the freedom to pursue interests outside school. It is also a great option for students who wish to take a different route to university in Singapore and abroad.

The world in their hands A great opportunity to experience multicultural exchanges, industry practices and develop a global mindset, Republic polytechnic’s Student Overseas Travel programme lets youth go places!

Korea

Besides K-pop, there are many other reasons why Korea is such a hotspot for everyone, especially for students in the School of Hospitality and School of Infocomm.

Learning About Service For the 31 Year 2 Diploma in Wellness, Lifestyle and Spa Management students from the School of Hospitality, visiting the Seoul Hoseo Technical College was an opportunity like no other. There, they had the chance to visit the business class cabin training facility for the Aviation Management course, visit a makeup studio and learn about herb ball therapy. What’s cool is that these students were able to have a first-hand experience in a Korean jjimjilbang (saunas). These saunas offer a range of detox options that range from purification to anti-aging and in fact, gave a taste of what the wellness industry in Korea is like to the lucky students.

Building Connections

Hong Kong

It’s true when they say that technology connects all of us, and the 45 School of Infocomm students can’t agree more. To gain deeper insights into the advanced technology used in the IT industry, these students witnessed how organisations leverage information technologies and systems to run business operations. Some of the places visited include Korea National University of Arts, Sangam Digital Media City, Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation and more. Two thumbs up, if you ask us!

Put together dim sum, passionate innovators and entrepreneurs, and you’ve just got a quick sum up of The 2013 Youth Entrepreneurship Interest Group (YES! IG) Social Enterprise Study Trip to Hong Kong. When they arrived for the three-day trip, the 24 students and two staff leaders were greeted by friendly folks from HSBC-Hong Kong Council of Social Services and the welcoming breezy cool air. During their time in the metropolitan city, the students spent their time learning all about the social enterprise landscape there. They visited businesses such as the Good Goods Store, a recently set up social enterprise that sells quality and ethically-sourced products, the Hong Kong Design centre to learn more about product design, and they even got to meet up with the co-founders of Alchemist, a social innovation business! What a privilege! What’s more, the students were even brought to the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association to discover more about the 20 social enterprises that the association has set up to create employment and training for their clients. To end their already beneficial and informative trip, the team was brought to Rainbow Gallery, a social enterprise souvenir store belonging to Noah’s Ark, and of course, they did have fun with the rides at the theme park too!

Thailand

Students from the School of Technology for the Arts landed themselves in Thailand for Student Overseas Travel to visit Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, other industry partners and to experience an interactive cultural homestay at Amphawa. During the trip, the team attended workshops organised by the university to understand what the industry expects on an international level. Better yet, they even had the chance to visit the Thai Public Broadcasting Service and Workpoint Entertainment Studio to get an idea of what goes on during preproduction and filming. But of course, a trip to Thailand would be incomplete without visiting the Grand Royal Palace – it was certainly an eye-opener for the students.

Aiming for The Stars

TP

Dedicated, independent and hardworking, this Temasek Polytechnic scholar is set to go far! Losing someone dear is never easy, but that did not deter Muhammad Faias from dreaming big. Having lost his father, the St Gabriel’s Secondary School student took up a Temasek Polytechnic (TP) Scholarship to lighten the financial load on his family. Today he is in his final-year Aviation Management & Services student with a perfect GPA of 4.0. Full of passion for aviation, Faias was one of the lucky few selected to pursue the accelerated flying programme (Aeronautical Science option) at the Singapore Youth Flying Club as part of his internship. Speaking about the opportunity, he says, “the programme has provided me with an unbelievable opportunity and thorough training. I am proud to say that I will have my Private Pilot License before graduating from TP.” He now plans to further his studies in a local university and pursue his dream of being the first pilot in his family. As a TP Scholar, the 19-year-old has had the opportunity to participate in many character and leadership building experiences such as a 10-day Outward Bound Taiwan Expedition, emceeing for School of Engineering events and even mentoring his juniors.

How has the TP Scholarship benefited you? Coming from a single parent background, it has definitely helped to ease the financial burden on my family. Most importantly, it has made me feel independent. The TP Scholarship provided me with many opportunities to better myself through the Student Leadership Programme.

Tell us more about your course - how interesting are the lessons? Taking up the Aviation Management & Services course was the best decision I made. Unlike the other aviation courses, it focuses on the business aspects of aviation, which I really enjoy. I enjoyed learning modules such as Airline Flight Operations, Airline Operations & Management, Airport Systems and Airfield Systems. With very experienced lecturers who readily connect with the students even on an informal level, the course is really enjoyable and interesting.

What is your secret to juggling both school and your active campus life so well? I strongly believe that if one enjoys doing what one likes, with just a little hard work, excellence can be achieved – I follow this simple principle. Encouragement and support from family, friends, lecturers and the advisors also play a vital role.

What has been the best thing about being a TP student?

The best part of being a student here is the cosy environment. I never fail to bump into my friends from other schools and have a quick catch up. Another great thing about being a TP student is the camaraderie which really resonates throughout the poly. As a student, you always get the sense that everyone here wants you to succeed. Another thing I really enjoy here is the sports culture. TP is very supportive of the sports CCAs and has provided great facilities to make it very conducive for the students to train. The sports complex is very active in the evenings and is always buzzing with energy and life, very much like everything else here in TP.

MONEY

FINANCE YOUR STUDIES Finding funds to pay for pricey tertiary education can be tricky. But the good news is, as a student, you can take up a range of financial aids offered by government organisations and banks. Priscilla Wu uncovers your options. I need financial help. What are the options available?

There are too many choices! How do I choose the right one for me?

Scholarships

Bursaries

A popular choice for academically-inclined students, scholarships award them with the chance to study in prestigious local and foreign educational institutions. As they generally cover the entire course fees, students may be required to serve a bond with the sponsoring company or institution. Breaking the scholarship bond after graduation will result in a hefty penalty.

Bursary schemes are grants offered by schools to subsidise part of the course fees. Unlike scholarships, which are awarded based on students’ grades, bursaries are offered in accordance to applicants’ financial background.

Study Loans Just like regular bank loans, study loans are provided by banks at different interest rates and lengths of repayment.

1

If you have decided on the course you wish to enroll in, you can start by looking up the financial schemes offered by the institution. Most government schools offer scholarships and bursaries to help students get into the course of their dreams.

2

Is there a particular organisation you wish to work for? Find out if they have an existing scholarship programme that allows you to join the company after graduation.

3

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! If you are unsure of which scheme to go for, talk to the consultants or do ample research before making your decision. You need to make sure that you are aware of all the terms and conditions.

4

Repaying a loan will take longer than you think. There are various study loans available for different financial needs, so choose one that has the interest rates and repayment terms you’re comfortable with.

I have more questions. Who can I speak to?

Open to most university undergraduates in local and foreign universities, the SIA Open Scholarship programme provides students with tuition fees, hostel and maintenance allowances, annual airtickets and vacation attachments. Scholarship holders are required to serve a four- or six-year bond with the airline.

DesignSingapore Scholarship Aspire to be a designer? Created for individuals with a passion for design, the scholarship covers the entire course fees and students will be given the position of DesignSingapore Associate. Overseas

26

graduates are required to serve a two-year bond in their respective field of training.

STB Scholarship

academic year will be awarded. Do note that students with visual and hearing impairments cannot qualify for the award.

Perfect for students who wish to gain indepth knowledge of the tourism industry, the scholarship covers tuition and exam fees, travel and living allowances and summer/exchange programmes in exchange for a four- to six-year bond with the Singapore Tourism Board.

Singapore Artistes & Performers’ Association Bursary

SPD Education Programme Bursary Award

MDIS Bursary

Students with disabilities can apply for the bursary awarded by the Society of the Physically Disabled. Up to $1,250 per

Students who are enrolled in performing arts courses can apply for the bursary which subsidises $1,000 per academic year.

For disadvantaged families with a monthly household income of $3,000 or less, $500 will be given to subsidise the course fees of full-time students.

“I opted for Kaplan after completing my N-Levels as it’s possible to obtain a diploma in just eight months. I was initially worried about not being able to cope with the pressure of taking such a huge leap, but my qualms were soon laid to rest. Not only is the campus environment very conducive for study, the lecturers are really friendly and patient in helping us understand the syllabus better. The teaching structure accommodates my needs very well, and I look forward to lessons every day! After the diploma programme, I pursued a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Finance from the highly regarded University of College Dublin. I hope to work in the banking and finance industry after graduation since there are plenty of opportunities in that sector. The fact that I can graduate with a degree in less than two and a half years after my N-Levels definitely gives me a competitive edge over my peers!”

My experience working in Learning Vision @ KK Hospital… has been satisfying. I’ve bonded well with the children of the centre and also created friendships with my colleagues. Also, I’ve been given lots of opportunities to better myself in this field, be it through working with those in various age groups or through seminars and training courses by Early Childhood Care and Education professionals.

One reason why others should become a Preschool Teacher is because… this is one of those jobs where passion really does drive you to do your best. It’s not all about teaching ABCs and 123s. It goes way beyond that. It takes a big heart to reach out to another. It gives you such unexplainable satisfaction watching a child blossom from an infant to a confident, young individual.

My hopes and aspirations for the future is to… definitely stay on in this industry. I have plans to take up a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Early Childhood Education, which is also offered by Asian International College.

Deal with Negative Vibes

THE POSITIVE WAY Ever found yourself trapped in these frustrating situations in school? Here are some ways to turn them around!

32

Scenario: There seems to be no end to your friend's whines about every little thing that upsets her. It's getting increasingly burdensome and your mood goes spiraling down every time she does that.

Scenario: There's this guy in

Strategy: Is your friend genuinely

Strategy: It’s clear that this guy

upset about something? Sometimes they just really need a listening ear, so hear them out and offer some sincere advice. If you’re not keen on getting your emotions involved, set boundaries and ask to continue the conversation another time when you can’t handle more for the day – it’s better than ignoring them. Besides, letting them have their own space gives them time to cool down and really think about their problems.

hasn’t gotten the signal that you’re totally turned off. Perhaps you’ve been too friendly and willing to continue conversations that he assumes you’re interested in him as well. Whenever he texts you, send him uninterested replies like telling him that you’re busy, or gently excuse yourself if he starts talking to you. Tell a trusted friend about what he has been doing, so that she can also be of help.

Scenario: You're inside a toilet

cubicle when you overhear your classmates complaining about you. You realise that one of them is your good friend, but she is actually joining in the gossip.

Scenario: Your teacher frequently picks on you during class, always calling you out to answer questions. Whenever you're stumped for words, she'll lash out at you for not paying attention in class.

Strategy: Though you may think that your friend is betraying you, she may also have been afraid to tell you the truth and hurt your feelings. Take a step back and think about whether their comments could be true. Then, meet your friend in private and gently probe if she really feels that way. Say sorry if an apology is in order, and learn from your mistakes! Sometimes, we need these hard brutal moments to toughen up and grow a thick skin.

Strategy: It’s unlikely that she’s targeting you on purpose. What if it’s just for your own good? Book your teacher for a one-on-one consultation session. Showing your willingness to learn will lessen the chances of her asking you for answers in class. Then, slowly broach the subject and tell your teacher about your concerns. It may be awkward at first, but clearing it with her will lead to a much smoother teacherstudent relationship.

Scenario: Your friends are

planning to steal stuff from a store after school. You feel unsettled but don't know how to break how you feel to them.

Strategy: While making up an excuse to not join them seems like the easy way out, you’re not being a true friend if you let them go ahead. Not saying anything makes them think you’re ok with it. But the trick is voicing your thoughts without being judgmental. Simply say “I don’t think taking things without paying is right.” No need to go on. They know the consequences: being escorted out of the store in handcuffs while everyone stares, disappointing family and getting a record that could affect future employment. Needless to say, stay away from them if they continue to jeer at you and make new ones that you feel comfortable with. Scenario: You're close friends

with a girl in class, but she has a terrible habit of putting you down. Though it doesn't seem intentional, she keeps correcting all your actions and makes you do what she says.

Strategy: She may be so accustomed to whatever she’s doing that it doesn’t seem wrong to her. It may even come as a shock. Do bring up her bad habits gently and tell her how you feel. It will be hard for her to change immediately, so be patient and give reminders time and time again.

Scenario: You've just gotten back your test paper

and yay - you scored an A! Your classmate turned around to ask about your results, and upon hearing it, her face became downcast. Oops... she seemed a little jealous?

Scenario: Your teacher is about to announce the chairperson for your CCA; a position you've been hankering after for a long time. But when it was assigned to someone else, you find yourself analysing why you deserve it more.

Strategy: First, you need to establish whether she harbours ill feelings towards you. If it’s because of her insecurities, have a regular conversation and slowly ease into the topic. Help her out with the subjects she’s having difficulty with. The both of you might just end up acing the next exam together! Also, school life is much better when you have someone to share the joy with.

Strategy: Being over-competitive is a dreadful trait that will carry on with you for a long time. Not only is it detrimental to your well-being, no one likes to hang out with someone who just wants to win. You need to first realise that ranks don’t define who you are. Think positively and lend your best support to the chairperson. It shows humility and graciousness to give up something that’s precious to you.

MDIS

FOLLOW

Your dreams

Psychology student Shariffah Radiah received more than just a quality education at MDIS. She shares how her time at the vibrant campus brought her one step closer to her goals.

How did you develop an interest in psychology?

When I was doing my O-Levels, I developed an interest in teaching. So I thought I should take up Psychology as it would teach me about human behaviour.

Is there a specific area of psychology that you particularly love? For now, it’s forensics. From what my lecturers have told me, it sounds very interesting.

What is the most enjoyable and difficult part of your course? The difficult part would be studying (laughs). There are so many things to study, so we need a lot of time for that. Other than that, the lessons and assignments are very fun. We get to do a lot of things like roleplay, which is fun!

How do you think you can apply what you have learnt in the course to your future career? It’s a diverse course. I learn a lot of different things like communication and different mindsets, so I believe it will help in my future career. We also learn about communication skills, so I think I can communicate better with people now. I know how to start a conversation and be friendlier.

What do you like best about MDIS and its style of teaching? My lessons are in the morning, so I can still make it for work after school and cope with a social life. I feel that the classes are much more casual and relaxed. Over here, you can be the person you want to be and no one will judge you for the questions you ask. I found it a bit difficult to cope with the lessons at first, but my lecturers are very helpful. They are very open and they treat us like friends. If we require help with anything, they are there to help us.

Why did you choose to study at MDIS? What sets it apart from other educational institutions? I was from St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary school and I had many friends who came to this school. They told me how fun and good it was to study here.

Can you tell us more about the campus environment? We have a psychology lab, so students can see how a counselling session is carried out. You’ll actually get to see the behaviour of the person who is about to be counselled. You’ll learn that you’re not supposed to advise as a counsellor. You should just listen.

Do you have any advice for fresh O- Level graduates? Come to our open house and learn about the environment from the current students. Or maybe take up a trial lesson of the course you want. MDIS is much like a polytechnic, including the quality of teaching as well as the numerous activities available outside lesson hours.

Lastly, what is your fondest memory of your time at MDIS? I got to dress up as Lara Croft from Tomb Raider for an assignment with my classmates. Our lecturer asked us to ‘dare to be ourselves’ and we did that. It was like a little carnival and we were just embracing ourselves. We walked around the school and many students took pictures with us.

MDIS COLLEGE

Soaring High

Setting itself apart from other educational institutions with its dedicated teaching staff, modern campus with wellequipped facilities and study schedule, MDIS College is the ideal choice for private candidates taking the O- and A-level examinations. The Story of MDIS College

For O- and A-level private candidates hoping to get into prestigious local and overseas universities, MDIS College has all the right makings to turn their dreams into a reality. Designed to help students achieve the best results possible to progress to the next phase of their education, the 10-month programmes enable students to opt for any of the examinable subjects available (with a maximum of nine subjects for O-Levels).

Studying at MDIS College

Besides the freedom to choose the subjects you prefer, the conducive learning environment and study schedule remains one of the top reasons why students enroll with MDIS College. Chahaya Suria,

36

who has always dreamt of being a psychologist, joined the institute for these reasons. She particularly likes that MDIS College offered “all the humanities subjects” she wanted and the well-equipped facilities available – including air-conditioned classrooms, science labs, a dance studio and gym. The carefully-planned curriculum and timetable also encourages independence, self-discipline and helps students achieve a good balance between their studies and social activities. “I manage my studies very well with the freedom given at MDIS College. There is ample time for after-school activities such as the driving course I’m currently taking. It all boils down to how well you manage time. It’s all about personal dedication.” The campus culture may be different from that of secondary schools or junior colleges, but getting used to the independent, hands-on learning style will help students achieve a smoother transition to tertiary studies. What’s more, students are given the opportunity to pace their studies in accordance to their academic abilities, so no one will feel left out or pressurised to perform.

Dedicated Lecturers

Samantha Suliyanto, an aspiring pediatrician, believes that the dedicated team of lecturers at MDIS College is also an attractive factor for students retaking their GCE O- and A- examinations. The teaching staff is ever-ready to offer guidance to students and with their teachers going the extra mile for them, students often feel more confident of achieving success if they are willing to work hard. “The teachers are very passionate about teaching. They will guide you through your work, telling you exactly where you went wrong and how you can do better. They are approachable and quick to respond to our needs, making it easy for us to clarify our doubts.”

PSB

Forge Your Future Don’t know which educational path to take? Pick up a course at PSB Academy and find yourself with plenty of career opportunities knocking on your door! One of the largest private education institutions here, PSB Academy offers plenty of options for students seeking tertiary education. Depending on their needs and interests, students can attain everything from certificates to postgraduate degrees with full- and part-time programmes in five broad areas – Accounting & Finance, Business & Communications, Engineering & Technology, Life & Physical Sciences and English Language.

Tabitha Low

(Graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Wollongong)

Choosing to study at PSB Academy due to its good reputation and recommendations from friends, Tabitha made another good choice by picking a course from the University of Wollongong, which Times Higher Education World University Ranking cited as one of the top two per cent of universities worldwide in 2013. “Having Australian lecturers gave me a different education experience and widened my exposure. It also broadened my perspectives,” she reveals. Praising PSB Academy for letting students lead a balanced life, Tabitha lets on that the flexible curriculum allowed her to further her interests in both dance and art and craft, which honed her creativity. The school also provided her with many opportunities to showcase and work on her talents too. Tabitha got to sharpen her sales and marketing skills as part of a publicity team for a week-long activity in school. She also got to participate in an entrepreneurial competition held by the institute, which she won with her teammates through good team spirit and hard work.

These courses are taught in top-notch facilities to enhance learning and have all been designed to equip students with skills that help them excel in the real working world. For students taking diplomas from PSB Academy, the comprehensive curriculum could also help them advance directly to year two in a degree programme as well. Partnering with distinguished universities in Australia and the UK, the institution not only provides students with valuable degree and postgraduate study options, but also gives them the opportunity to study abroad. Here, two PSB Academy graduates share their memorable experiences at the school.

“I believe the knowledge and skills I've picked up are very applicable in the world, and this would enable me to be a valuable employee in any company I go to.”

Yue Kaiwen

(Graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from The University of Newcastle Australia) After comparing the options offered among the private education institutes in Singapore, Kaiwen decided on PSB Academy. He felt it had a better education environment with its own campus and smaller class size – which meant each student could get more attention. In addition, he firmed up his decision as the school had a good partnership with The University of Newcastle Australia, which has a reputable engineering degree. According to Kaiwen, having three semesters a year taught him to

40

analyse and solve problems more efficiently. Applying what he learnt to his 12-week industrial attachment, Kaiwen impressed enough to secure a permanent position in the company upon completing his internship. Speaking about the experience, he reveals that he’s very happy with how things turned out.

“This is the industry I want to be in and I am glad I made a good choice to join the company at the beginning.”

SEED

The Next Generation How did you develop an interest in early childhood education? Being the oldest sister to two siblings and having to take care of many younger cousins over the years made me realise how much I love being with children. I can work really well with kids too. It is something that I am passionate about and the only industry I see myself working in!

How do you find the course and was it different from your expectations? It was quite an eye-opener for me. I never thought that there were so many things to learn. This course definitely helped me to see beyond what I know, and understand what the field is really about.

What is the most enjoyable and difficult part of your course? Visits to various childcare centres and kindergartens were fun because I got to see how different centres work and how teachers put what they learnt into practice. The hardest part would be the field practicums as the childcare centre that you are attached to may not share the same

Valerie Tan, a recent graduate of the WSQ^ Professional Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education (WSQ PDECCE), reveals why SEED Institute is the ideal learning ground for students who wish to work in early childhood care and education.

teaching philosophy as you do. As teachers, we have to be resilient and adaptable to overcome these difficulties.

What are some key skills you have learnt in the course that will give you an edge over others in the field? The course was very enriching. I have also acquired knowledge and skills like the foundations of children’s development and classroom management that will allow me to understand the development pattern and milestones of different age groups. I can then apply them in curriculum planning and design lessons that will be most beneficial to my students’ learning.

Why did you choose to study at SEED Institute? The teachers at SEED Institute do not just pass on their knowledge to the students. Many share their many years of experiences with us and their stories always make learning so much more interesting!

What do you like best about SEED and its style of teaching? Our teachers use different methods of

teaching, just like how we should with the children. We did not just sit in class all day; we were given opportunities to share our thoughts, participate in group discussions, and learn through hands- on activities.

Do you think being a SEED graduate opens up more job opportunities or chances for you to further your studies? Definitely! The school always informs us about job opportunities or courses available to further our studies via emails and notices in school. They hold job recruitment fairs in school as well.

Do you have any advice for students who wish to know more about the industry? I once thought that being a preschool teacher was only about teaching lessons and playing with children, but there is so much more to it! It is definitely not easy being an educator; if you are really passionate about children, they will surely keep you going. All the hard work you put in will go a long way and the experience is very fulfilling!

SCHOOL

SURVIVAL KIT

Quell your back-to-school fears. With this handy list of suggestions, your first day of school will be a breeze! By Amanda Tan

Things To Do:

1

Sleep early

Of course, you want to make the best of the last night of holidays while you still can, but it isn’t worth it to wake up grouchy and exhausted on your very first day of school, spoiling your teachers’ impression of you and getting irritated at the slightest things that people say. You’ll just find that the entire day becomes a drag.

Things To Bring:

1

A delicious snack

We all know how dreadful the first few periods of class can get, especially when you’re still groggy in the morning and you’re asked to solve tough problems. With a delicious snack to look forward to, you’ll find yourself much more awake and excited for recess time! Treat yourself to a banana muffin, or prepare peanut butter sandwiches the night before! See other yummy food to prep on p. 4!

2

Mints and sweets

These are great energy boosters that will perk you up for a while if you’re feeling drowsy. More importantly, it keeps your breath fresh and pleasant. Just ask your teacher if he or she minds beforehand.

2

Socialise

3

There’s nothing wrong with striking up a conversation with a classmate and giving them a friendly smile, as long as you don’t scare them off with questions like “What is the meaning of life?” Easy conversational questions (like those on p. 20) make people open up more and they’ll be willing to continue the conversation as well.

3

Be funny!

4

Do not be annoying

Dry and wet tissues

With such hot weather in Singapore, you can’t look glamorous by just wiping your sweat away with your hands. Freshen up with a quick swipe of the tissues. Not only will you feel more awake, you’ll be cleaning away sebum and bacteria as well!

4

Cracked kissers can be distracting and painful, so pop one in your bag to help out, especially when you’re in dry air-conditioned rooms. Plus, the minty ones have a nice buzz that will keep you awake.

Who doesn’t like a funny pal? A humorous person brings life to conversations, makes everyone feel comfortable and attracts people to them like a moth to the flame. Of course, if humour is not your quality, don’t try too hard. Chill out and be the one to laugh at the jokes instead.

Everyone’s understanding of the word ‘annoying’ is subjective, but the basis is there. Talking too much, making unnecessary remarks, asking stupid questions, following people around all day (we all know someone that does these things)... Well, don’t be one of them and you’ll be safe.

44

Lip balm

5

Deodorant

This is the one backpack essential that everyone either overlooks or misuses. Spritzing on too much is too overwhelming, but ignoring it makes you stink of sweat and body odour. Just spray lightly around your pits and neck and it will be enough.

Notes on Study Breaks

When?

If you’re constantly zoning out, it’s a warning sign that you’ve been processing too much information and need a break. Try sectioning the work you have to do so you can take a break after 45 minutes or so.

How long?

A 5-10 minute break is ideal. It keeps you in the zone without letting you drift and get distracted.

What to do 1. Call a friend to ask about their progress! A lighthearted chat will spur both of you on and let you catch up for a bit. 2. Get some fresh air. No naps! Take a short stroll outside or do some stretches. 3. Grab a bite to eat. It’ll get you recharged. Heavy meals are not advised if you don’t want to fall asleep halfway.

Setting Up Your Study Space

1 2 3 4 5

Colourful bookends will keep everything neat and tidy instead of having your textbooks strewn around your room. Use a comfy chair with cushions to help keep you upright or an exercise ball that will force you to sit straight.

Place a whiteboard planner in front of you so you won’t forget about your priorities or tasks. You can put cute magnets on it for a fun touch. A cute stationery cup is a must to store writing equipment. It lessens the chances of your pens disappearing into thin air!

Homework DOs and DON’Ts

DO

DON'T

Check with the teacher if you’re unclear about something.

Copy answers from your classmates. Honesty is a virtue.

Research thoroughly before starting your work, but stop when you think you have enough or it’ll never end!

Attempt to do all your homework at one go. Splitting up the work will ensure each section gets adequate attention.

Go through your work again before submitting to make sure you don’t leave any careless mistakes.

Underestimate the power of note-taking! Your previous notes might just contain the answers.

GOOD TIPS

No more ZZZs

IN SCHOOL! Curb carb and sugar cravings

A breakfast rich in protein fends off hunger and prevents you from overeating during lunch. Go for eggs, salads or plain yoghurt instead of carbs and sugars.

Power Shower

Have a nice refreshing shower before heading to class. If you’re running late, splashing your face with cold water helps as well.

Drink up

A cool glass of water in the morning stimulates metabolism so you won’t feel groggy while prepping for school.

Catch up on the news

Reading newspapers or online websites in the morning helps you keep up-to-date with current affairs and is a great way to stimulate those sleepy brain cells.

IN SCHOOL Get some exercise

Go for a morning jog or hit the nearby gym for a short workout. It’ll leave you focused and energised for hours.

Bright lights

Turning on the lights is an awful way to wake someone up, but if it’s effective in telling your body that the sun’s already shining bright, why not?

A good laugh

Squeeze out a few minutes to watch a funny video. Alternatively, browse through your subscription list for new clips from your favourite uploaders. Just keep an eye on the time.

Scented candles

Dousing your home in an invigorating fragrance such as peppermint, citrus or cinnamon is a delicious way to awaken your senses.

Colourful stationery

Use different coloured highlighters and pens on your notes. A myriad hues make studying more enticing and adds a pop of fun into the mundane lessons.

Soak up the sun

Excuse yourself for a short five-minute walk around the block. A warm sunbath in the late morning does wonders for your senses.

Toilet breaks

Even if you don’t have a full bladder, going for toilet breaks gives you some time to stretch those tense muscles. Be careful not to abuse the bathroom privilege!

Sit up straight

Such a simple action easily puts you in an active frame of mind. The upright position also projects a confident image and prevents you from hunching later in life.

Healthy snacks

Fruits contain just enough sugar to make you feel perkier, and apples have even proven to be as effective as caffeine!

Eat light lunches

It takes a bulk of energy to digest large amounts of food, so you’re bound to fall asleep when you’re not even one hour into the lesson! Just have enough so you won’t be hungry.

Keep eyes on the teacher

Maintaining eye contact prevents your mind from wandering off. No harm in diverting attention to notice her pet phrases or hand gestures for a few minutes, as long as it keeps your mind going!

Stay in motion

Keep yourself occupied with little fidgets (but don’t be a distraction to others!) like tapping your fingers against your arm, spinning a pen or taking down notes.

Front row seats

For desperate measures, grab the front row seat in class! Your teacher won’t let you out of sight and this prevents you from stealing sneaky naps.
