Demi VS Selena: Round…?

Local Flavours

First there was Britney versus Christina, and who could forget the Lindsay Lohan versus Hilary Duff saga? With every generation, a new Mousketeer feud is fuelled, be it by the media or diehard fans, and current times are no exception. Former Disney stars Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez should be aware of their musical rivalry by now – their previous albums (2015’s Confident and Revival) and first singles from those cuts (‘Cool for the Summer’ and ‘Good For You’) were released a mere week apart and had to battle for chart dominance. And with the once-inseparable BFFs recently dropping their new singles within the same week, we wonder if it’s a case of subtle shade-throwing or simply friendly competition…

You won’t need to head to a hawker centre the next time you’re craving homely fare. Fast-food giants McDonald’s and Burger King are both winning the island over yet again with their take on burgers with a local twist. We’re still in disbelief at how McDonald’s has managed to replicate the authentic Nasi Lemak flavour. Trust us, having each bite bursting with the familiar kick of sambal chilli before washing it all down with Bandung McFizz is pure Singaporean bliss. Over at Burger King, our taste buds are treated further to flame-grilled rendang and gingery Hainanese options to suit different appetites. Shiok lah!

Old Is Gold Retro vibes are all the rage right now for the entertainment scene. TV shows like Netflix’s hit series GLOW and Stranger Things – both set in the ’80s – never fail to delight us with their throwback nods to a bygone era. Old-school touches can also be most recently found closer to home in music releases such as on The Sam Willows’ ‘Save Myself’ single cover, with its Wong Kar Wai meets That ’70s Show aesthetics.

10

Re-Bootilicious? Wish you could relive those days of watching your favourite TV shows? Well you can… kinda. With Raven Symoné making a return to Disney Channel in the brand new Raven’s Home, there’s bound to be more reboots of old favourites bent on hyping up the nostalgia factor. Besides Nickelodeon recently announcing one-off revivals of beloved classics Rocko’s Modern Life, Invader Zim, and Hey Arnold, we also have a comeback of superhero comedy The Tick, a reunion of Jersey Shore’s infamous party animals and Katy Perry fronting the 2018 edition of American Idol to look forward to, amongst many others. Wait, what year are we in again?

Acting Bug

Colouring The World

Your eyes weren’t deceiving you! Both Rihanna and Harry Styles are gracing audiences with their star power in the sci-fi flick Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and war thriller Dunkirk respectively. And if the positive reviews so far are any indication, it seems like we’ll be seeing more acting gigs in the pipelines, along with more artistes hopping onto the bandwagon.

It seems like many are taking the quote “seeing the world through rose-tinted glasses” a little too literally these days, with many opting to include bold shades of colour in their fashion get-ups. From global trendsetters like Gigi Hadid and Charli XCX, to local style mavens @ ell4d and @marxmae, it’s impossible to escape the appeal of vivid filters for your sunnies. And it’s not a look reserved for girls either – even Drake has been seen rocking pink shades!

11

Hair Affair Here’s a hair-raising trend that could see its way to the top of newsfeeds real soon: mullets. Yup, the quintessential rockstar hairdo from the ’70s just might be the next most requested cut at the salon, all thanks to K-pop. Ever the fashion icon, G-Dragon first sported the unconventional do at his solo show, and soon a slew of idols coincidentally followed suit – with EXO’s Baekhyun donning flaming streaks for their latest group comeback ‘KoKoBop’ and actor Nam Joo Hyuk flaunting a similar look in now-airing K-drama Bride of the Water God. Pardon us asking, #ButWhy?

NORTH

Fish & Chicks 531 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, #01-2429, Singapore 560531 For good ol’ Western fare in the heartlands, Fish & Chicks is where the real deal’s at. A joint venture by two friends Justin and Albert – one with the business smarts and the other with the culinary heart – the duo cooked up a storm on social media with the Insta-famous Salted Egg and Chilli Crab Fish & Chips ($11.60). Crowd favourites aside, their Thai-inspired menu featuring Tomyum Pasta ($10.50) and Green Curry Chicken Cutlet ($11.60) are also worth raving about.

545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles Tekka Food Centre #01-326, Singapore 210665 The history of 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles goes far back to the 1950s, where the grandfather of current third-generation owner Li Ruifang first set up stall along the streets of Whampoa. Determined to carry forward the Li family’s heritage, the 32-year-old lady boss stays true to the recipe passed down from generations. You can’t go wrong with a brothy classic, but order the dry noodles (from $4) tossed with a spoonful of sambal chilli for the ultimate shiok factor.

Rong Cheng Bak Kut Teh

Na Na Homemade Curry

Midview City #01-114, Singapore 573971 One of the few traditional bak kut teh stalls left in Singapore, Rong Cheng has been serving up bowls of teochew goodness since 1976. Since taking over the business, secondgeneration helmsman Lionel Lim pays homage to the ‘teh’ culture by being the first to introduce floral tea. They’ve also expanded their offerings to include zi char dishes, but it’s the tradition of pairing tea with the well-loved dish that really completes the experience.

Blk 303 Jurong East Street 32, Singapore 600303 Having stood the test of time, Na Na Homemade Curry has drawn in a flock of regulars willing to travel the distance to satisfy their curry cravings. And they don’t mess with their craft one bit – the Yap sons may have taken charge, but rest assured it still packs the same fiery-hot punch from grandma Khim’s reign, best served with their fast-selling Curry Fish Head (prices differ).

The Fishball Story

Coffee Break

JTC LaunchPad @ one-north, Timbre+ #01-14, Singapore 139957 From a humble hawker stall to earning the Michelin Bib Gourmand award, The Fishball Story isn’t just any other success story. Paying tribute to his grandmother’s traditional fishball recipe, 26-year-old Douglas Ng makes everything by hand. Their standard bowl ($4.50) is enough to satisfy, but we recommend going for the Premium version ($6.50) which comes topped with the bounciest fishballs you’ll ever taste.

Amoy Street Food Centre #02-78, Singapore 069111 In need of a caffeine fix? Skip the hipster cafes and head over to Coffee Break for a humble cuppa. Now helmed by sibling trio Jack, Faye and Anna Sai, this 82-year business gets a modern update with sock-brewed kopi and artisanal toasts with a twist – think Sea Salt Caramel Latte ($3.80), and Earl Grey Creme Toast ($2.50). The menu changes every three months so you can definitely expect new offerings on your next visit!

15

Amidst the kitschy signboards of yesteryears at the Bedok North Market & Food Centre, this eight-month-old stall stands out for its Japanese-style storefront that immediately brings to mind your typical donburis and bentos. However, it was a pleasant delight to witness three young men – Gladwin, Eric and Raphael – serving up a fusion of modern and traditional flavours at surprisingly pocketfriendly prices. Inspired by umeboshi (pickled plums), a Japanese breakfast staple, Plum & Rice caters to the local palate by incorporating sour plums into your choice of rice of porridge, which will look dope on Instagram thanks to its intriguing pink hue. Each set also comes with homecooked favourites such as braised pork belly, cod fish and free-flow soup. And at the price of $4, it’s solid bang for your buck!

Reformulated with a potent blend of age-defying properties, this four-step arsenal helps to restore your skin’s natural radiance while protecting its barrier against harmful aggressors. Plus, the added ingredient of hyaluronic acid aids in deep hydration from within, giving you smoother, firmer and bouncier skin in no time!

Speaking with For Beloved Gir l (FBG) founder, Margaret Wu.

It’s Tea Time

Green tea has numerous health benefits, but who knew it could also be used in organic haircare? Refresh your scalp with The Body Shop Fuji Green Tea Range (from $15 onward) which works a siliconefree formula of Japanese green tea, mint menthol and salt crystals to whisk away impurities while delivering an invigorating boost. The best part? It’s certified crueltyfree and formulated with 100 per cent vegan ingredients. Going green while keeping your tresses healthy? Count us in!

What were some of the criteria while developing the For Beloved Girl Mineral Cloud-Silk Mask Series?

that are suitable for younger skin and you’ll be fine.

As younger girls have better and healthier skin, the complexion issues faced would be simpler. With FBG, we developed six sheet masks that cater to different skin concerns, and our formulas encourage skin renewal, brightening and moisturising the skin without being laden with excessive ingredients – effective treatment without stressing out youthful complexions.

You don’t have to shell out big bucks for expensive brands with rich or complicated ingredients because younger skin doesn’t need it. If you expose your skin to ingredients and nutrients that it does not require, it might cause your skin to become sensitive.

Can we use sheet masks daily? Masks can be used to soothe inflammation and prevent future breakouts. Choosing the appropriate mask for your skin type can also help to improve your complexion.

Ready, Set, Remove!

We love waterproof formulas just as much as the next beauty junkie, but it can be a pain to take it all off at the end of the day. Lift off the most stubborn of makeup with the new Bifesta Oil-in Makeup Remover Sheets ($3.90 for 10 sheets, $14.50 for 40 sheets) – infused with natural botanical oil, one sheet is all you need to wipe away every last speck of makeup while leaving your skin feeling soft and refreshed. No more double cleansing!

With that being said, using masks only once or twice a week is ideal as masks tend to have stronger concentrations of nutrients and ingredients.

How do you determine a good skincare routine? Keep your routine simple. Ensure that your skin is cleansed and well-moisturised, remember to apply sunscreen and remove your makeup properly. When it comes to putting on masks, just use those

23

What makes FBG stand out? FBG has a big advantage over its competitors because this range comes with six different solutions – to moisturise, brighten, control oily complexions and even has a V-shaped mask that helps to tighten the face – a complete package for any skincare woes. Personally, I like the design and colours used. We display the main ingredient used [in the masks] very clearly on the packaging, which is also in hopes to make it easier for youths to identify the type of ingredients they need, and to let them learn about various technical beauty terms.

For Beloved Girl products are available for purchase exclusively at Sephora!

Real Women, Crush Munah Bagharib, Sam Rui and Trishna Goklani – you follow them on Instagram and probably have tried to mirror their aesthetics, but there’s more to these pretty faces than meets the eye. By johanna teo

What do a YouTube star-turnedactress, R&B singer and fashion maven have in common? Apart from the impressive strides they’ve made in their respective careers, the trio share the sentiment that everyone should be able to do whatever the heck they please – at least when it comes to beauty. “Well at the end of the day, it’s my face and I’ll do what I want with it. I can thread it and inflict pain upon myself or paint it till the high heavens,” shares Sam. Trishna adds, “To each her own, and whatever makes you feel more confident in your own skin.” And like their empowered mindsets, these fierce ladies are serving up #WomenCrushWednesday realness, all while putting Singapore on the map.

Turn Up For Singapore

Get into the national day spirit by putting these flag-waving tunes on blast. By Bryan Yeong

‘We Will Get There’ – Stefanie Sun (2002)

‘Moments of Magic’ – Fann Wong, Elsa Lin and Tanya Chua (1999)

Many might mistake this nostalgic pop gem as a National Day song, but trueblue NDP-fans will have you know that this was actually our nation’s official anthem to usher in the new millennium. Featuring the It girl trio of pre-Hollywood Fann Wong and local songbirds Tanya Chua and Elsa Lim, ‘Moments of Magic’ serves up major Spice Girls vibes. Who could forget the fresh-faced ladies cheerfully singing in front of sweeping skylines and futuristic landmarks in the MV?

‘What Do You See?’ – Electrico (2009)

Many had contrasting opinions about this track from homegrown band Electrico – some criticised the rockleaning sound, while others embraced the alternative choice as a venturous step in the right direction. As compared to the usual bubblegum influence and borderline corny lyrics from some of its predecessors, ‘What Do You See?’ did away with the stereotypical and even excluded the word ‘Singapore’ completely. What resulted is an indierock smash we can proudly call our own.

Can you believe it’s been 15 years since this unbeatable NDP classic? Our very own pop princess’ contribution for our annual celebrations was a notable power ballad for the ages. From the opening guitar riffs to Stefanie Sun’s distinctive vocals, this Dick Lee-penned track bursts into an uplifting self-reminder to look both forward and back. Besides performing a jubilant rendition of the song at the National Day Parade 2015, the songstress also included both English and Mandarin versions on her 2002 album Leave, which went on to sell over a whopping four million copies in Asia alone.

‘Song For Singapore’ – Corrine May (2010)

Trust Singaporean singer-songwriter Corrine May to pull at our heartstrings the same way Kit Chan’s ‘Home’ had only ever done before. An inspirational piano-driven ballad, ‘Song For Singapore’ puts Corrine’s velvety vocals on full, raw display. Pair its lyricism with the MV’s storyline of a girl blossoming into her childhood aspiration of being a NDP choir conductor, and you’re in for some heavy waterworks.

51

‘Reach Out For The Skies’ – Taufik Batisah and Rui En (2005)

Name a better duo who celebrated the NDP celebrations with a more appropriate track. We had the best of both the local music and television scene when Singapore Idol winner Taufik Batisah and screen queen Rui En teamed up to celebrate Singapore’s 40th birthday. Supported by their strong fanbases then, it was no wonder that this upbeat number quickly became memorable. Fun fact: Taufik and Rui En were also our cover stars back in August 2005!

‘Tomorrow’s Here Today’ – 53A (2016)

In celebration of last year’s festivities, pop-rock act 53A strips it back with a folkier, acoustic take on the traditional record with this refreshing pop banger. Vocalist Sara Wee fronts the colourful one-take music video, which also features a host of symbolic icons including old shophouses, roadside stalls and SBS buses – a fun, creative approach that hopefully marks an ever-evolving trend of modern concepts.

To call Jack & Rai heavyweights in the local music scene would be an understatement. Boasting over a decade worth of experience, they have built up quite the resumé – from headlining gigs to lending their voices for advertisement jingles. The duo recently celebrated their 15th anniversary, and they show no signs of stopping. You might also be able to spot this pair at their Japanese bistro, The Flying Squirrel, when they are not busy strumming chords.

Hit Play:

Jason Chung

Belting high notes to Mandopop classics was what got Jason Chung started on his singing career – and he’s still going strong 25 years later. Throughout his musical journey, he has clinched the winning title at The Pioneer 3rd Asian Karaoke Championship, and also played mentor to budding young talents. But now, Jason is ready to take on the Sundown stage, delivering a mix of English and Mandarin songs for the hometown crowd.

‘Lemon Tree’ ’All I Want’ ‘Can’t Pretend’

Derrick Hoh

He might be a bilingual singer, but Derrick Hoh is more than just a double threat. With two albums, eight singles and numerous chart-topping hits under his belt, this Project Superstar alum has since become a household name thanks to his swoon-worthy vocals and undeniable boyish charms. Adding on to his list of accomplishments, the singer has made us proud with awards such as Best Asian Artist at the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards. Those who can’t get enough of Derrick after the festival can also look forward to his live showcase in September, where he will be premiering two new tracks!

Ling Kai

Hit Play:

‘Dumbfounded’ ‘One Person’ ‘Larkin Steps’

The Summer State

It seems like homegrown singer-songwriter Ling Kai might have the touch for churning out viral tunes. Her first original ‘Larkin Steps’ has since been played over a million times on YouTube; while another self-penned track earned her a spot on singing competition Sing My Song. More recently, her latest single ‘Dumbfounded’ made its way to the top of the iTunes’ Mandopop charts, and fans who desire more of her soulful compositions can keep an eye out for her upcoming album.

It’s not everyday that you get to rub shoulders with world-famous acts, but for pop-rock outfit The Summer State, they’ve had the honours of opening for international bands like Simple Plan and Yellowcard – and it’s about time for them to take their turn in the spotlight. With summer in full swing, this fivemember band is back to turn up the heat with a new slew of crisp tunes and catchy hooks.

Who’s the

Boss? Meet the next generation of millennial entrepreneurs from Singapore Polytechnic who are making a name for themselves while shaping the future of technology. In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in millennials taking the leap of faith into entrepreneurship. While most students are busy juggling assignments, there’s a new breed of young power players who dare to dream bigger: carving out a career in the world of mass media. With the Internet being a big part of our lives today, it’s no surprise emerging startups are utilising digital technology to improve how things are done and the quality of our lives. Read about the success stories of how three tech-savvy entrepreneurs from Singapore Polytechnic are changing the world, one pixel at a time!

All it takes is a small idea to create something big. Take a cue from Lew Gao Wei, the brainchild behind MightyAim which is designed to empower the visually impaired through assistive technology. After a visit to the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH), he witnessed firsthand how a seemingly user-friendly smartphone could pose many unforeseen challenges to the visually impaired. Thus, the MightyAim team came up with SenseUX, a software development kit that uses simple movements, voice assistance and haptic feedback, to provide the blind with a more intuitive experience of accessing mobile applications with ease – think of it as a white cane to navigate the digital world. Currently, Gao Wei and his team are conducting user testings at SAVH twice a week. Here’s hoping this technology will make a difference to the lives of the visually impaired!

Gone are the days of scrolling through a maze of webpages just for the answer to a simple question. Enter NYX, an intelligent chat bot system that’s able to provide answers based on specific keywords and even has a virtual assistant on standby in the event that the bot fails to answer. A stroke of genius by three brilliant students – Azeem along with his team members Ian Soo and Vivek Tadikamalla – this project was first conceived during Azeem’s stint at Microsoft as a student partner. Little did he know that it would go on to clinch the national champion title for the Innovation Category at the Microsoft Imagine Cup Competition, and also win Gold at the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation Awards! Move over apps, chat bots are the next big thing.

Azeem Arshad Vasanwala Diploma in Information Technology, Class of 2017

Clinton Li Year 3, Diploma in Business Information Technology With a penchant for solving problems with innovative solutions, Clinton Li seeks to digitalise the refuelling process in the maritime industry. When he heard about the cumbersome paperwork procedures that ships are required to go through during bunkering, Clinton had a light bulb moment. After much research, Debunk by Orama was created. Using technology to automate labour-intensive processes, the result is a web portal that digitalises the documents needed for a smoother flow of information while increasing the level of transparency within the industry. It was well-received – in 2017, he placed second in Most Disruptive Technology Category and third in Rockstar Pitch for the Innovfest Unbound 2017 Startup Soapbox Competition, and even served as a mentor to international teams taking part in YES 2017.

Uniquely Singaporean? Count yourself as a true-blue patriot only if you relate to these oh-so-Singaporean habits, as said by Singapore Polytechnic students! “Running down from my HDB flat whenever I hear the familiar bell sound of the ice cream uncle approaching. I’d always order the ice cream sandwich with mixed flavours, and it only costs a dollar!”

“During lunch time, the food court in school is always packed so my friends and I would use the typical Singaporean method to chope our seats – using packets of tissue paper!”

“I tend to walk really fast, especially when I’m rushing for the MRT during peak hours. I didn’t realise it at first until I visited Australia – Aussies simply stroll at their own pace!”

“Just the fact that I can speak Singlish comfortably with friends around me. When I travel overseas, I have to consciously remind myself to refrain from using Singlish as natives might not be able to understand me.”
