First there was Britney versus Christina, and who could forget the Lindsay Lohan versus Hilary Duff saga? With every generation, a new Mousketeer feud is fuelled, be it by the media or diehard fans, and current times are no exception. Former Disney stars Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez should be aware of their musical rivalry by now – their previous albums (2015’s Confident and Revival) and first singles from those cuts (‘Cool for the Summer’ and ‘Good For You’) were released a mere week apart and had to battle for chart dominance. And with the once-inseparable BFFs recently dropping their new singles within the same week, we wonder if it’s a case of subtle shade-throwing or simply friendly competition…
You won’t need to head to a hawker centre the next time you’re craving homely fare. Fast-food giants McDonald’s and Burger King are both winning the island over yet again with their take on burgers with a local twist. We’re still in disbelief at how McDonald’s has managed to replicate the authentic Nasi Lemak flavour. Trust us, having each bite bursting with the familiar kick of sambal chilli before washing it all down with Bandung McFizz is pure Singaporean bliss. Over at Burger King, our taste buds are treated further to flame-grilled rendang and gingery Hainanese options to suit different appetites. Shiok lah!
Old Is Gold Retro vibes are all the rage right now for the entertainment scene. TV shows like Netflix’s hit series GLOW and Stranger Things – both set in the ’80s – never fail to delight us with their throwback nods to a bygone era. However, it was a pleasant delight to witness three young men – Gladwin, Eric and Raphael – serving up a fusion of modern and traditional flavours at surprisingly pocketfriendly prices. Inspired by umeboshi (pickled plums), a Japanese breakfast staple, Plum & Rice caters to the local palate by incorporating sour plums into your choice of rice of porridge, which will look dope on Instagram thanks to its intriguing pink hue. Each set also comes with homecooked favourites such as braised pork belly, cod fish and free-flow soup. And at the price of $4, it’s solid bang for your buck!

Many might mistake this nostalgic pop gem as a National Day song, but trueblue NDP-fans will have you know that this was actually our nation’s official anthem to usher in the new millennium. Featuring the It girl trio of pre-Hollywood Fann Wong and local songbirds Tanya Chua and Elsa Lim, ‘Moments of Magic’ serves up major Spice Girls vibes. Who could forget the fresh-faced ladies cheerfully singing in front of sweeping skylines and futuristic landmarks in the MV?
‘What Do You See?’ – Electrico (2009)
Many had contrasting opinions about this track from homegrown band Electrico – some criticised the rockleaning sound, while others embraced the alternative choice as a venturous step in the right direction. As compared to the usual bubblegum influence and borderline corny lyrics from some of its predecessors, ‘What Do You See?’ did away with the stereotypical and even excluded the word ‘Singapore’ completely. What resulted is an indierock smash we can proudly call our own.
Can you believe it’s been 15 years since this unbeatable NDP classic? Our very own pop princess’ contribution for our annual celebrations was a notable power ballad for the ages. From the opening guitar riffs to Stefanie Sun’s distinctive vocals, this Dick Lee-penned track bursts into an uplifting self-reminder to look both forward and back. Besides performing a jubilant rendition of the song at the National Day Parade 2015, the songstress also included both English and Mandarin versions on her 2002 album Leave, which went on to sell over a whopping four million copies in Asia alone.
‘Song For Singapore’ – Corrine May (2010)
Trust Singaporean singer-songwriter Corrine May to pull at our heartstrings the same way Kit Chan’s ‘Home’ had only ever done before. An inspirational piano-driven ballad, ‘Song For Singapore’ puts Corrine’s velvety vocals on full, raw display. Pair its lyricism with the MV’s storyline of a girl blossoming into her childhood aspiration of being a NDP choir conductor, and you’re in for some heavy waterworks.

‘Reach Out For The Skies’ – Taufik Batisah and Rui En (2005)
Name a better duo who celebrated the NDP celebrations with a more appropriate track. We had the best of both the local music and television scene when Singapore Idol winner Taufik Batisah and screen queen Rui En teamed up to celebrate Singapore’s 40th birthday. Supported by their strong fanbases then, it was no wonder that this upbeat number quickly became memorable. Fun fact: Taufik and Rui En were also our cover stars back in August 2005!

To call Jack & Rai heavyweights in the local music scene would be an understatement. Boasting over a decade worth of experience, they have built up quite the resumé – from headlining gigs to lending their voices for advertisement jingles. The duo recently celebrated their 15th anniversary, and they show no signs of stopping. In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in millennials taking the leap of faith into entrepreneurship. While most students are busy juggling assignments, there’s a new breed of young power players who dare to dream bigger: carving out a career in the world of mass media. With the Internet being a big part of our lives today, it’s no surprise emerging startups are utilising digital technology to improve how things are done and the quality of our lives. Read about the success stories of how three tech-savvy entrepreneurs from Singapore Polytechnic are changing the world, one pixel at a time!
All it takes is a small idea to create something big. Take a cue from Lew Gao Wei, the brainchild behind MightyAim which is designed to empower the visually impaired through assistive technology. After a visit to the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH), he witnessed firsthand how a seemingly user-friendly smartphone could pose many unforeseen challenges to the visually impaired. Thus, the MightyAim team came up with SenseUX, a software development kit that uses simple movements, voice assistance and haptic feedback, to provide the blind with a more intuitive experience of accessing mobile applications with ease – think of it as a white cane to navigate the digital world. Currently, Gao Wei and his team are conducting user testings at SAVH twice a week. Here’s hoping this technology will make a difference to the lives of the visually impaired!

Enter NYX, an intelligent chat bot system that’s able to provide answers based on specific keywords and even has a virtual assistant on standby in the event that the bot fails to answer. A stroke of genius by three brilliant students – Azeem along with his team members Ian Soo and Vivek Tadikamalla – this project was first conceived during Azeem’s stint at Microsoft as a student partner. Little did he know that it would go on to clinch the national champion title for the Innovation Category at the Microsoft Imagine Cup Competition, and also win Gold at the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation Awards! Move over apps, chat bots are the next big thing.

Clinton Li Year 3, Diploma in Business Information Technology With a penchant for solving problems with innovative solutions, Clinton Li seeks to digitalise the refuelling process in the maritime industry. When he heard about the cumbersome paperwork procedures that ships are required to go through during bunkering, Clinton had a light bulb moment. After much research, Debunk by Orama was created. Using technology to automate labour-intensive processes, the result is a web portal that digitalises the documents needed for a smoother flow of information while increasing the level of transparency within the industry. It was well-received – in 2017, he placed second in Most Disruptive Technology Category and third in Rockstar Pitch for the Innovfest Unbound 2017 Startup Soapbox Competition, and even served as a mentor to international teams taking part in YES 2017.
