Your Say Letter of the month Dear Teenage, I’ve been an avid reader of Teenage magazine ever since my best friend introduced it to me when I was in secondary 1. I would always grab a copy of Teenage every month without fail. However, I was close to missing it last month.

Holler at us! We want to know what you think of Teenage, how our stories make a difference in your life, and where we can improve. Here’s how!

Send your letters to TEENAGE Magazine, 20 Bedok South Road Singapore 469277 or email to marketing@key-editions.com Please include your name, NRIC no., address, contact no. and email address. This month’s ‘Letter of the Month’ wins a pair of Happy Plugs In-Ear worth $45

I was on the way home from Changi Airport, feeling awesome to be back in Singapore after a week-long trip overseas. As I checked through my phone, I realised that it was almost the end of the month! For fear that I would’ve missed the July issue of Teenage, I requested for my parents to drop me at a convenience store near my place. Despite my fatigue from the trip, I was determined to get a copy of Teenage before it runs out of stock. As I walked into the store, my eyes flew towards the magazine racks. Immediately, I spotted Teenage. Phew, that was a close one. This month’s issue really attracted me. I love the article on characterthemed cafes. As I am a huge fan of Hello Kitty, you could imagine

how excited I was to see the cafe being featured in the magazine. I also like how you incorporated tips to avoid mishaps during vacations into the travel horror stories. Those tips were really useful for me as I’m a frequent traveller. Another article that I love is the one on photography. I’ve always wanted to take on photography as a hobby, but was put off due to the high cost it incurs. Upon reading the article, I was elated to see that there are quality yet affordable cameras for beginners like me! Through these years, I have grown a lot with Teenage, with it guiding me through the various aspects of my life. I am extremely grateful to the team behind Teenage magazine for constantly producing good reads for us. You will always have my support! Thanks for the support, Joanna! Your letter has been picked as ‘Letter of the Month’!

Yours truly, Joanna

The July 2016 issue was awesome because there are features on the Pokemon Cafe, Hello Kitty Orchid Garden and many more interesting places where families could visit for a day of bonding. Especially Teenage’s Disney adventure to Tokyo DisneySea – I’ve always wanted to go to Disneyland with my family but they’re too busy at school and work.

In The Nude Pop-up Squad

ASSEMBLE YOUR VERY OWN ACNE-FIGHTING HEROES WITH THE BODY SHOP’S BLEMISH BATTLING SUPERHERO SQUAD!

THE KICKASS CLEANSER The first step to keeping blemishes at bay is using a good cleanser. The Body Shop’s new 3-In-1 Wash.Scrub.Mask ($29.90) is a triple threat, multitasking hero with foaming kaolin clay, volcanic minerals and Community Trade Tea Tree Oil that nixes clogged pores, blackheads and shine. Use it as a purifying wash, smoothening scrub and a deep cleansing mask – a worthy member of the squad indeed.

THE DAILY SKIN AVENGER AND THE BLEMISH TARGETER Especially handy for those with blemish-prone complexions, the Tea Tree Anti-Imperfection Daily Solution ($32.90) and iconic Tea Tree Oil (from $19.90) are your best bet in the war against acne. The former is a lightweight and effective all-over-face serum, while the latter targets blemishes directly with its high concentration of tea tree essential oil. Acne won’t stand a chance now!

18

Nude makeup is a surefire way to look fresh and fab without the overkill. Master the art with shu uemura, as the brand goes back to basics with its new Vision Of Beauty Collection Vol.3. The range consists of the limited edition Nude Atelier Eye Palette ($98), Stage Performer Invisible Powder (from $60), Eyebrow Manicure ($42), and Tint-InGelato ($38). Time to take your makeup game up a notch!

BB Facelift

There’s no ending to the battle of the cushions, and Laneige makes sure it stays in the lead by giving its very well-loved BB Cushion a brand new look and formula. The K-beauty brand is decking its famous BB Cushion Whitening and BB Cushion Pore Control ($59 each) in swanky hologram cases, plus the 3D Skin Fit design of the sponge for even distribution on the puff. What’s more, the upgraded BB goodness comes in 10 different shades, so nobody gets left behind.

Double Up

We’re all guilty of walking around with blotchy foundation in the middle of the day thanks to the heat. There might be no escape from the weather, but the Etude House Double Lasting Foundation ($33.90) is here to save the day. The secret lies in its Double Shot technology which contains moisture and oil-based powder to make sure the foundation stays fresh for as long as 24 hours. No more midday meltdowns!

A Quick Fix Mud About You

Mud has been used for centuries to detox and deep-cleanse the skin, but unlike the conventional clay mask, Biotherm’s Wonder Mud ($59) comes in a mousse texture that will not dry and crack on the skin, making it easy to cleanse off. Designed to fit the lifestyle of urban women, this heavenly mask doesn’t require a long application time. Simply leave it on for three minutes and you’re set to reveal clean and fresh skin. It’s called Wonder Mud for a reason!

M.A.C is back at it with another lustworthy makeup product! The Lightful C SPF 50/PA++++ Quick Finish Compact ($56) is an essential for those quick, five-minute routines. The buildable, long-wear coverage reduces the appearance of pores, leaving the skin extra smooth sans the stickiness. What’s more, this feather-light foundation is packed with vitamin C, a known natural brightening agent. Not forgetting its packed with SPF 50 for maximum UV protection. It’s everything a girl could ask for, packed in a compact!

Cold Treatment

Sometimes, the weather in our sunny island can be a little unforgiving. When dry hair and oily scalp becomes a daily affair, grab the Tsubaki Cool Head Spa set ($29.90, available exclusively at Guardian) as an icy treat for your mane. Besides giving our scalp the much-needed cooling sensation, the limited edition shampoo and conditioner also protect and repair UV-damaged hair so you can have lustrous locks all day.

Smell The French Rose

L’Oreal Paris is expanding its Extraordinary Oil Haircare collection, and this time, it’s infused with French Rose Oil. The Extraordinary Oil Éclat Imperial range includes a shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, and oil (from $16.90). And its formula is made to deeply nourish the hair and scalp without the grease, so you can have shiny hair all day minus the involuntary wet-look. The lingering rose scent is definitely a huge bonus too!

You simply can’t go wrong with the on-trend palette of Ellysage. They specialise in neutral staples, but what sets them apart is their immaculate attention to details – think unexpected pleats, side slits and contrast hems for a contemporary twist to the usual suspects of classic tops, flare pants, and midi skirts. Prices are a little steep compared to the rest, so you’ll probably want to save up your pennies before splurging on one of these pieces.

Mention fashion e-commerce and MDS Collections would probably be the first you’d think of. The local retailer has garnered an expanding presence in the shopping scene both online and off, with over 12 stores in Singapore and several overseas outlets in the region. One huge selling point about MDS is that they provide a wide assortment of styles for women of all ages. The best part is, you don’t have to break the bank for quality garments – shopping has never been so guilt-free!

Why you should listen to them:

Disco Hue is exactly what it sounds like: pastel hues and neon lights meet psychedelic beats and dreamy bass lines, resulting in the synth-pop perfection that makes this indie-electronic quartet. The entire appeal of Disco Hue is on full display in their new music video for ‘I’ll Be Waiting’ from their debut EP Arcade, all kitschy video game goodness that takes us on a nostalgic trip back to the ’80s – think of it as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World with a local twist.

54

The first time we heard a The Summer State song was the heartbreak anthem of ‘I Do, I Don’t’ that almost had us in tears. That was in 2013. The second time we heard them was their latest single ‘Enough’ in June, an infectious number that totally eschews their original formula of uplifting ditties and lovelorn lyrics in favour of a new pop-punk direction – think shout-along verses, head-banging guitar riffs and frenzied energy. “A fresh chapter of The Summer State”, they say. And if this is the sound they’re going for, we’re certainly expecting to see ‘em give other bands a run for their money.

Why you should listen to her:

Beth Yap aka bittymacbeth is the newest indie darling on the local scene, and her debut album Beauty For Ashes proves she’s worth all the attention. The girl has sick pop vocals, is a one-woman-band with flawless multi-instrumental skills on bass, guitar, and piano, and possesses an awesome moniker that reflects herself “trying to overcome affliction” just like the Shakespearean anti-hero. Best of all, she croons with conviction about issues that are usually sidestepped, such as bullying and self-harm. As she says on her lead single, “Haters gon’ hate, but we can do better”!

Why you should listen to them:

Since clinching the Noise Singapore award in 2013, the indie-rock outfit has performed at numerous alternate fests, including Baybeats Festival, *SCAPE Invasion and Singapore Night Festival. Just last year, Stopgap finally dropped their long-awaited debut album Totems, bringing their trademark infectious energy and do-it-all attitude into groovy tunes such as ‘Crossing Swords’, ‘Run Out’ and ‘A Tough Nut To Crack’, which was actually named by fans at IGNITE! Music Festival 2014. We’re definitely seeing big things in store for this talented band!

Why you should listen to him:

Perhaps you know Jonathan Chan aka JAWN from his now-defunct band The Huckleberry Friends, or you’ve listened to his covers of Damien Rice, Bon Iver and Kodaline on YouTube, or you too think he’s Singapore’s answer to John Mayer (dude even has a John Mayer support group on WhatsApp!). Whatever the reason, he’s definitely one to watch. The bespectacled musician may just be starting out in his career, but his songwriting roots date way back to 2009. And with the launch of his debut self-titled EP, the 26-year-old explores universal themes of love, life and growing up, translating his retrospective thoughts into haunting melodies like ‘Chase Away The Dark’, ‘Fade To Black’ and ‘Horizons’.

55

Why you should listen to them:

You’d be doing yourself a disservice if you were to skip out on Enec.e (pronounced as ‘anecdote’). A hypnotic blend of folk, shoegaze and dream pop, this hidden gem of a band formed in 2012 “writes songs about conversations that never happen”. Although we wish more things would’ve actually happened because ‘Crystallized’, their only official single till date, is truly a work of art. The band recently tore up the stage at Singapore Coffee Festival, *SCAPE Invasion and Singapore Art Week, and while it’s a pity they aren’t churning out new original material yet, you’re still able to catch Enec.e at gigs and such. Watch out for their upcoming shows on their socials!

The Wonderful Wor ld Of Wengie

WHAT DOES ONE TALK ABOUT TO A YOUTUBE GURU WHO MUST’VE ALREADY SPOKEN ABOUT VIRTUALLY ALL ASPECTS OF BEAUTY, FASHION, LIFESTYLE AND MORE? WE SAT DOWN WITH WENDY AYCHE AKA WENGIE TO SUSS OUT MORE ABOUT THE LADY BEHIND THE MILLION-SUBSCRIBER (AND COUNTING) CHANNEL. BY JOHANNA TEO

#1

Catch the rest of our interview with Wengie online at www.teenage.com.sg!

She dishes good advice

When asked if she felt pressured by social media expectations like the common ‘Instagram-envy’, Wengie replied, “If you can channel it in the right way – I’d go on Instagram to look at pretty pictures to inspire me to make something beautiful, but I won’t let it inspire me to make me feel bad about myself. It’s about controlling your exposure to it. We are pretty much the result of what we expose ourselves to.” And that was only a tenth of the solid advice she gave us.

#2

She’s a #Gir lBoss

It’s common knowledge that Wengie had quit a well-paying job to pursue a full-time YouTube career, but

64

now that her channel has taken off, it seems like she’s got even bigger things planned. “I really want to talk more about the business side of things and entrepreneurial topics because I feel there’s an emerging trend of females wanting to venture out, and not be [just be] part of work.” Citing Michelle Phan as someone she looks up to, Wengie continues, “She’s shown that you don’t have to just be a YouTuber and there’s much more to the world than just doing YouTube. Michelle has really paved the way and made a lot of male entrepreneurs really notice the power of makeup influencers.”

#3

She’s totally relatable

Assuring us that her life isn’t “as glamourous as you think it is”, Wengie laughingly described her average day being “spent in front of Premier Pro and my computer editing footage”. She later on adds, “I’m a slob. I’m not as perfect as you think I am, my bedroom looks really nice and pretty but I’m the messiest person alive. I would walk around with food on myself, have salad in my teeth... I know some girls who are pristine all the time and I wish I could be like that, but I’m not.” Shout out to everyone who feels less than perfect – Wengie totally knows how it feels.

eeting Wendy Ayche (more affectionately known as Wengie to her subscribers) in real life was pretty cool – we’ve been hooked onto her YouTube channel ever since stumbling across it two years back. Even with her huge following, the beauty maven was refreshingly down-to-earth and our hourlong chat thoroughly convinced us she’s one of the sweetest people we’ve met thus far. Here are three things we learned about Wengie, that’ll definitely make you hit subscribe (if you haven’t already).

They star ted out as a student band

With all their dizzying success, Mayday’s humble origins give aspiring bands everywhere hope. Ashin, Monster, Stone, Masa and Guan You first met in guitar club at high school, proving that teenage rock star ambitions are not completely unfounded. After initially performing together under the name So Band, they formed Mayday in 1997 – and went on to give the world the mindblowing music we know today.

They take their concer ts seriously

It was a dream they aspired to at first, citing the legendary rockers as their main influence for the longest time. But in 2014 when they became the first Mandarin band to perform at New York’s Madison Square Garden, The Washington Post bestowed the title of the “Chinese Beatles” upon Mayday. The nickname eventually stuck, and grew to become their unofficial moniker in the US and UK.

There’s nothing that makes a fan lose respect quite as quickly as when they save up for front-row access to a show, only to get a halfhearted show. Besides going all out on set design and energy levels, Mayday has always played their concerts like they mean it. Once while they were here on our shores, they spontaneously decided to extend a simple free showcase into a full two-hour gig. And in

There’s nothing quite like reading about Singapore through the words of a homegrown author. Whether set overseas or in our sunny island, here are some local literary works that give us good reason to wave our flag loud and proud. BY LEE KAI LIN

Troublemaker By Bertha Henson When veteran journalist Bertha Henson left newswriting after nearly three decades, she decided that she would instead channel her expertise into critical commentary of the reported news. Offering netizens her analytical takes on breaking news, she published bite-sized pieces on both independent news site Breakfast Network (now defunct) and her personal blog, Bertha Harian. Troublemaker is a compilation of her columns and opinion pieces from both platforms that will teach you a thing or two about how to read, process and question the content of the news we are presented with every day.

SingPoWriMo 2015: The Anthology

Every April, a group of passionate poets take to the Singapore Poetry Writing Movement (SingPoWriMo) Facebook page to challenge users to pen one poem a day for the entire month. SingPoWriMo 2015: The Anthology is the fruit of last year’s call to action, as netizens responded with overwhelming contributions ranging from Singlish-styled sonnets to poignant haikus about local landscapes. As you devour each piece of homegrown literature, you can’t help but wonder what the burgeoning poetry scene in Singapore may look like years from now, and just how much your surroundings could inspire you to put pen to paper.

LEAP: Journey of a Young Global Leader from Singapore By Yap Kwong Weng Despite his close brush with death after being badly injured in a car crash back in 2001, Yap Kwong Weng made the pivotal decision to continue his Navy SEAL training. He jotted down his entire experience, from his change in life perspectives, to pushing on with the infamously brutal training, to switching from a cushy private sector job, to pursuing community work in Myanmar. LEAP is the author’s proof that humble beginnings in this little red dot can inspire greatness, no matter how young you are.

It Never Rains on National Day By Jeremy Tiang What does it mean to be Singaporean? What keeps Singaporeans who live overseas considering themselves as such? Is a global identity the new identity? Jeremy Tiang’s acclaimed debut novel questions the fascinating process of how individuals actually decide where they belong. Through a collection of short stories set all over the world, from Switzerland to New York City and back to Singapore, It Never Rains on National Day is a gripping take on one of today’s most pertinent issues – national identity – and will prompt you to reconsider your own definition of being Singaporean.

Sugarbread By Balli Kaur Jaswal Set in ’90s Singapore, Sugarbread is a coming-of-age story of a Punjabi-Sikh girl named Pin. Derided at school for her ethnicity, Pin struggles to comprehend the delicate nature of her racial identity, while navigating through her family’s unique set of problems, including her mother’s own dilemma between respecting tradition and embracing modernity. Balli Kaur Jaswal’s novel doesn’t just touch on race, class and patriarchy – it also highlights what it means to be a minority living in Singapore.

Mount Emily By Low Ying Ping Intrigued by an urban legend, Patsy and Elena start digging around their school’s backyard and inadvertently transport themselves back in time – and find themselves stuck in the bodies of their 13-year-old mothers. A fantasy time-travelling romp, Low Yip Ping’s novel takes us on an adventure circa 1987 with our two young companions, who have to set things right before an imminent time crisis threatens to wipe out all of mankind.

Aunty Lee’s Deadly Specials: A Singaporean Mystery By Ovidia Yu Ovidia Yu gives us the Singaporean sleuth we never knew we were missing: middleaged widow Aunty Lee, who cooks and caters Peranakan specialties for a living, and puts her nose for news to mystery-solving. After she’s accused of serving poisoned food, she finds herself thrown into the world of illegal organ donation – a territory darker than your average aunty would care to snoop around in.

to meet my guy Hey Kelly, It is time to connect with you. I know I will get myself into lots of trouble if I continue on this path. My best friend ordered me to write to you or she threatens to “tell my mum everything”. I have no choice. But in my heart, I know she is right. What can I do to change my life?

I met this guy in a chat room and we developed a relationship. He was kind, loving and interested in me, and all that I said and did. He flattered me and made me feel important. I fell for him because no one else paid so much attention to me before. It felt great. It seemed so natural to meet him when he suggested it as I believed him when he said he loved me and would take care of me. So I agreed to meet him. I never asked why he

only wanted to meet me at night. My bedroom is on the second floor of our bungalow home. For more than six months, I have been climbing out of my window and going down the tree outside my window at least three times a week. I am 15-years-old. At the beginning, when I snuck out of the house, my guy and I did innocent things. For the first three months, we went for walks along Orchard Road, visited Gardens by the Bay, the outside area, and on his birthday, we went for a meal. At first, I used to come home

Anyway, these days there are no more innocent walks and chats.

All he wants to do is have sex with me. He seems impatient, picks me up in his car at the end of my street and takes me to a secluded spot. Then, he makes me do bad stuff with him. Actually, I am embarrassed and nervous, but he says this is what a guy and his girlfriend would do.

I go along with his demands because I don’t know what else to do. I have never been in a sexual relationship before. At the beginning, there were no requests for sexual intercourse. I went to the library and read up on sexual relationships. This is where I got my information.
