<3 THESE! For their 20th anniversary, BABY-G has gone from being ‘Tough & Cute’ to being ‘Tough & Cool’. Rolling out rugged and colourful new models, the brand is also celebrating with a limited edition SNSD collab and the BGD-500 series inspired by the very first BABY-G!

Hi everyone, I’ll be totally honest here. One of the things that used to irk me a lot in the past was the copycat mentality that seemed so prevalent here: everyone essentially wore the same clothes (in different colours and patterns), bought into the same ideals and dream careers, and brands and stars were always modelling themselves after the hottest things in the market. Not cool. We needed new stars who weren’t just going to be the next 4Minute or One Direction. That’s why I’m really pleased with this new generation of local celebs. They’re Nice having Tosh back again all fighting hard to carve a niche after our shoot a year ago! #Happy #Reunion for themselves, and their fast ride to fame proves it’s obviously working. Previously, anything local was shunned. Now, an Instagram post by any one of our cover boys gets five-digit ‘Likes’. Perhaps it’s the era of the SG-Wave? I’m really proud of how far Singapore has come. Many locals have really pitched in to make our island come alive - there are more attractions to visit, so many cool eateries, and tons of fun things to do. The ‘kampung spirit’ is not gone, on the contrary, I feel like we’re all coming together to build the Singapore we want, this time with renewed energy, youths are taking a more active role too! I’m really excited to see what will happen next, aren’t you? Ahead, plenty of cool finds that will make you fall for SG all over again.

My sis got me hooked on the water-light Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner ($32.90). The toner is the best thing on a hot day, clearing any grime and sebum leftover after cleansing without any stickiness.

Have a happy National Day!

I just had to send this because it’d be my biggest regret had I not told you how much I loved your May Issue. Obviously I’m a big SNSD fan, so when I heard about Teen age having the girls on the cover, I quickly called my uncle to grab a copy. I read it last night in one sitting! It’s really nice to see writers showing to the readers (especially nonfans) how the girls really are in real life. You projected them more of individuals than celebrities. It’s a breath of fresh air. :) I loved the study tips as well! Would be totally useful. Looking forward to more beautiful issues in the future! Kudos, and more power to Teenage! Chloe, 17

TOTALLY YUM! There are always plenty of cool new mooncake flavours to try each year, get a head start with these. If you’re an ice-cream lover, Swensen’s has three new ice-cream mooncakes ($8.60 for one, $32.80 for four) – Queen of Earl Grey, Pink Guava Romance, and Mango Fantasy – to add on to its existing range.

Hawthorne Flake Macarons ($2 each, Hatter Street Cafe)

The new Bakerzin snow skin mooncakes ($52–$60 for eight) come in a variety of delectable flavours, packaged in a gorgeous box. Fruity Yuzu and Mango are big hits, but we also like Yam, which has a more traditional flavour.

TRIED & TESTED

NEXT LEVEL BEAUTY Gone are the days when a simple brush and washcloth will suffice. Welcome a wave of innovative products, promising to change

up your grooming routine. Find out if they really do the wonders they promise. By Phoebe Low

Using 16,000 vibrations per minute, this foundation applicator spreads both liquid foundations and BB creams evenly to improve the coverage, blending and staying power of the product. All your problems with patchy or streaky foundation are solved as it helps cover up visible pores with a nice and even finish. But do be careful with maneuvering this around the delicate eye area to prevent tugging the skin there. One of the latest must-haves, it’s made with fibre from a potato-like plant and lets you gently cleanse, massage and exfoliate your skin. You don’t have to use cleansers with it, although you can use just a touch if you do – the sponge froths up the product easily and spreads it out. This has bamboo charcoal, which is especially good for removing excess oil and fighting acne-causing bacteria. It had a rubbery texture that exfoliates and unclogs pores without excessive tugging. Our complexions did feel a lot cleaner and pores did seem smaller. However, you still need to remove your makeup beforehand.

22 AUG 2014

Using ceramic plates and sonic vibrations, heat is evenly and gently distributed through hair for healthy and shiny results with less time and effort. Straightening hair was a breeze. Not only is it lightweight and easy to manage, the vibrations gave us smoother hair without snagging on tresses or singeing locks.

This eye makeup corrector has two tips on either end. Use the white waxy tip to ‘erase’ smudges and blending boo boos, then remove any remaining residue with the black sponge tip. For those who always make mistakes when putting on eyeliner, this is a godsend. The familiar pencil structure makes it easy to manage and the waxy tip removes even the most stubborn water- and smudge-proof products.

Rotating 500 times per minute, this lipsmoothing system gently massages your pout to rejuvenate and revitalise your kissers. Use it with the brand’s sugar lip scrub ($28), to leave your lips feeling baby-smooth! Putting the gadget on our kissers felt funny at first, but its gentle movements coupled with the grainy lip scrub worked fast and we got used to the buzzing quickly. We tried putting on our fave lipstick after and noticed that it went on smoother and our pout looked a little plumper too!

Combine sound vibrations with tapered soft and slim bristles and you’ll get a super-cleansing toothbrush! The thin bristles help get to pesky hard-to-reach gunk, while the 9,000 sonic wave vibrations per minute help remove plague and stuck particles for a beautiful smile. When we were done, our teeth felt squeaky-clean! The Sonic Toothbrush was a dream to use, letting us get around to areas that would usually hurt with our regular big brushes. AUG 2014

LOCAL LOVING

Game for More

Meet our local stars! Judging from their fast-growing fame and fanbase, they’re rising rapidly and becoming as hot as your fave K- and E-pop stars. Do they have what it takes to dominate the scene and go international? Johanna Teo finds out.

40 AUG 2014

What makes a megastar? Fame, talent, good looks and luck, certainly. These guys definitely have those. And with their no holds barred answers and affable charm, it’s no wonder they’ve captured the hearts of their audience, even with the relatively short time they’ve had to do it! Teenage chats with these next generation stars about their popularity, career, the sudden hype about local stars and where they think they’re headed!

Would you rather keep a lowprofile like Johnny Depp or be as popular as One Direction? Ian: I’d choose to be popular. I’d want to be the best and prove that I can succeed. Aloysius: (Immediately) Johnny Depp! I like the whole idea of staying low-profile while still enjoying what you’re doing… He’s able to portray his acting on a whole different level and

wake me up. Plus, the doorbell doesn’t work… If he does succeed, I’ll probably invite him in to have a drink, so maybe he will write a good report of me. (Laughs) Aloysius: I’ll be shocked, but I’ll be polite and ask if I can freshen up first. It depends on what they want to do. If they’re just there to capture the ‘unglam’ moment, then I’d have lost from the moment I open the door.

people just recognise him purely for his acting. That’s something I would like to pursue. Ben: I want to make good art and do good work. Whether I become Johnny Depp or One Direction is inconsequential. Although Harry Styles has some awesome hair. Xu Bin: At the very start, [fame] feels good because it isn’t something you’ve felt before. But as time passes, you’ll feel bothered because Singapore is quite small. You’ll feel like you’re in a transparent box and everyone’s watching you – it’s like you’re so naked. It’s a hard choice. After a long night working, the paparazzi ring your doorbell early in the morning. What would you do/say to them? Ben: Benjamin’s not here, he died 18 years ago. Ian: Three years ago, I would punch his face. But now, I’d ask him “May I help you?” I’ve grown up, and learnt to be nice. There’s no need for me to overreact. Xu Bin: I think it’s impossible, because I’ll be sleeping and not even my alarm can

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt in your career so far? Xu Bin: I’ve been in the industry for more than a year, but it feels like I’ve been doing it for three to five years. Everything in [this line] seems to [be bigger and moves faster]. You learn and pick up things quickly. Ben: Fall in love with [the trade], the good bits and the bad bits. Loving your career doesn’t mean you only work four hours a day, because that’s when you enjoy it the most. Loving it means getting up at 6am even though your mind wants you to slap yourself. Aloysius: As an artiste, you have very strong influence. Everything you do affects someone else, so I’ve to be careful about what I do or say. Hopefully I’m able to portray a positive image, send out more positive messages, and try to inspire people. I hope so? List three words to describe yourself Aloysius: Ummmm… Quiet, rational, and hopefully mature? Ben: What’s over there? Xu Bin: Positive, natural, motivated. Ian: Confident, straight-forward, filial. What would you be doing if you weren’t in this industry? Ian: I’d be a consultant; or maybe a teacher for Home Economics? I can actually cook well and got an ‘A’ for the subject during my ‘O’ Levels! (Laughs) Xu Bin: I can’t do Monday to Friday jobs. I’m not the type that can sit down the entire day, facing the computer and doing filing. Perhaps I will open my own bar, which I’ve wanted to do since young, and set up my own business. Aloysius: I’ll probably go into marketing, or try to be an entrepreneur.

I’ve always wanted to have my own F&B place… The second would be franchising something from overseas just for investment purposes! Ben: I would be travelling the world as a photojournalist. What’s the most thick-skinned thing you’ve done for your career? Ben: Saying yes to projects in theatre, music and film that I know I’m not ready for. There’s a brilliant quote by Kobi Yamada - “Sometimes you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down”. Ian: I’m very thick-skinned, and that’s how I’ve come so far. I fight for things; I’ll fight for roles. I’ll show them all the things I can do. At least there’s a chance. Xu Bin: All artistes must be thickskinned. When you get scolded, you have to suck it up. You can’t show your temper. When it’s a happy scene, you still have to act happy. Any roles you’d like to play in the future? Ian: I’d like to play a psychopathicpervert. The role will probably give me another perspective. Xu Bin: Being a bad guy would be one choice. I’ve not done any ‘bad’ roles so far, except for in Don’t Stop Believin’, but that role was more rebellious than vicious. Aloysius: I actually want more difficult roles, like acting as someone mentally or physically disabled. I’ve always felt that if you are able to portray those roles well, you’d be able to let the public know the problems these people face. Ben: I would love to do anything that scares me, so either a role that requires me to go under immense mental stress, or put on a lot of weight, or be in a ton of fighting scenes… or speak Mandarin. Name one thing you’d like to do in the next five years. Ben: Skydive or bungee jump. And take stupid pictures while doing it, like while drinking a cup of hot chocolate and doing the crossword. Ian: I wish to produce my own film. Right now, I have four scripts on hand, but I don’t have the money. I wanted to be a director instead of an actor, to be honest. I didn’t realise that once I’d acted, I’d love it. AUG 2014

LOCAL LOVING

ACTS TO WATCH Many local talents usually fade off fast, but these acts are on their way to becoming true-blue household names! By Johanna Teo

Why look overseas for good musicians when you can find them right on our very doorsteps? We’re proud to say that our sunny island’s brimming with indigenous talents that wouldn’t pale in comparison to international acts. You might’ve already seen their works around, but here’s a proper introduction for these acts that’ll outlast the usual fifteen minutes of fame!

WHO: ShiGGa Shay Quick bio: We can’t write about people-to-watch without including the talented ShiGGa Shay! This musician-songwriter-producerentrepreneur is a creative powerhouse, whose musical journey began at the tender age of nine. Best known for his hit single ‘Lim Peh’, ShiGGa already has a mixtape and EP under his belt, one of which was recorded in the rapper’s bedroom! Also co-founding a hip-hop movement called the Grizzle Grind Crew – familiar faces include Tosh Rock and Wang Wei Liang – he’s determined to push the envelope all the way. Living by the motto “If I die making history, it’ll be all worth it”, ShiGGa is definitely a force to be reckoned with!

WHO: Kenny Khoo Quick bio: You may know him as ‘Hao Ban’ from the local film That Girl In Pinafore, but Kenny Khoo’s acting chops aren’t his only skills! Actively pursuing music since he was a teenager, Kenny paid his dues through singing competitions, club performances and even demo singing. His dedication and efforts paid off – at time of print, this home-grown crooner is currently in Taiwan promoting his debut album, Ten Storeys! Kenny recently came back to Singapore for promo activities, and we got treated to the soulful serenades of this soon-to-be megastar!

48 AUG 2014

WHO: The Sam Willows Quick bio: Formed in May 2012, this indie quartet with four lead vocals brings a refreshing soul-folk sound to the music scene. Their self-titled EP was released just four months after their formation to rave reviews plus a sold-out launch party, signalling a promising start for their rise to stardom. In the past year itself, The Sam Willows have worked with top-notch producers and gone from performing at a national level, to going on international tours! Debuting their latest single ‘Glasshouse’ – produced by five-time Grammy award winner Steve Lillywhite – The Sam Willows shows no signs of slowing down.

WHO: Trick PHOTOS: OLI, SONY MUSIC, FUNKIE MONKIES PRODUCTIONS, THE SAM WILLOWS

Quick bio: Marc Lian and Richard Jansen are a pop duo with a four-in-one combo – they sing, rap, compose and produce their own material! Otherwise known as Trick, the pair releases covers of popular songs while adding their own flavour. We especially love their take on ‘Who You’ by G-Dragon (BIGBANG), and ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. Their music has even garnered attention from Min (miss A) – she re-tweeted the link to their single ‘BPM’, and thanked them for their good music! We last saw them at the YouTube Fan Fest 2014, and Trick is currently hard at work on their debut album. We can’t wait to hear the sick tunes they’re sure to bring us!

Kazuki: We haven’t really celebrated with each other yet since we think we’re still on the way to our final goal. We had an anniversary concert in Budokan last year for fans, where Mayday also came to celebrate with us. We were really happy to see them.

Playing with the title of your tour, Moment, what are some of the proudest moments you guys have had together thus far? Ryuta: The flumpool tour 2010 shows were most memorable for me because although I had a polyp then, I made it to see our fans. I gained a lot of confidence after that.

Across your extensive five-year discography, which song of yours do you hold closest to heart and why?

Ryuta: ‘Belief ~ Haru wo matsu kimi e~’ It was our most exciting collaboration with Mayday and it was really an honour for me.

54 AUG 2014

Kazuki: ‘Flame’ was the first song we performed in Budokan and I can still remember each and every face of the audience members who sang along with us. Genki: ‘Because… I am’. The tour with this song was the biggest nation-wide tour we had, and it was most memorable for me. Seiji: ‘Hana ni nare’, our debut song. It changed our lives.

You’ll be performing your first full-length concert in Singapore in August. Any hints as to what fans can expect from the show? Genki: First of all, we’ll perform most of our songs in Singapore and then Ryuta will… this is all I can tell you for now. LOL.

Where do you see yourselves in the next five years, and what are you aiming to achieve by then? Ryuta: I want a strong relationship with the fans overseas, especially with the Singaporean fans who’ve been supporting us. We hope to perform our best in our concerts!

Apart from your Moment tour and best hits album, Monument, what other stuff are you guys doing to celebrate this milestone?

BEAUTIFUL SOUL If you’re a fan of Adele, you’ll love Taiwanese powerhouse Jia Jia. Find out why in this interview. By Lee Jing Hui

She’s collaborated with some of the biggest names in Mandopop “Working with Tanya Chua on the song ‘Happiness Coming’ was such an honour for me. I really admire her impeccable work ethic and professionalism. I heard the song’s currently being played on some Taiwanese TV shows as well, and I’m ecstatic!”

She recognises her fans “My fans are very nice people. My deepest impression was of a 13year old girl who sat front row at my concert both times I performed in Taiwan. I remembered her because she looked so young, and I was surprised that my ‘mature’ songs appealed to her too.”

She enjoys our local food “My favourite is Roti Tissue, it’s really delicious!”

She’s an animal lover “I don’t think my fans know this, but I really like elephants! To me, they represent forgiveness and assurance. They’re such loveable creatures, don’t you think?”

She’s had insecurities and doubts, like any of us

PHOTOS: ONE PRODUCTION

“Some of the songs in my album, namely ‘50 Maybes’ and ‘Maybe, Maybe You Love Me’ are based on my personal thoughts and feelings. I’m sure many others, like me, have doubted themselves or had uncertainties before. I always find myself asking ‘why’ or ‘maybe’ way too often.”

She gives great advice “I feel that girls who have self-esteem issues should find something special about themselves as a way to stand out from others. There’s no need to emulate models or celebrities. Everyone’s unique in his or her own way!”

CATCHING SPRING W

hat’s it like attending a seven-hour long C-Pop outdoor concert in the sweltering heat of June? Definitely not a walk in the park, we say. Humidity aside, we thoroughly enjoyed the Spring Wave Music Festival 2014, held on 7 June at The Meadow, Gardens by the Bay! The event promised us awesome musical acts, which definitely didn’t disappoint.

Guo Shu Yao aka Yao Yao The Taiwanese sweetheart was the first of the star-studded line-up, and she warmed the crowd up for the night to come. Her set list included popular songs like Taylor Swift’s ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’, Penny Tai’s ‘The Love You Want’, and Avril Lavigne’s ‘Wish You Were Here’. Yao Yao strode around the extended stage to interact with the audience, much to her fans’ delight. The Otaku Goddess even sat down at the edge, gamely shaking hands with the crowd! Wrapping up her set with her song ‘Love’s Embrace’, we were a lil’ disappointed as the petite cutie didn’t give out any hugs like we hoped…

I’m here!

We battled through intense heat to catch Spring Wave Music Festival 2014, and here’s the scoop on our entire experience! By Johanna Teo

Jam Hsiao

Jam Hsiao made Clad in an electric blue jacket, ers as he treated his entrance onstage amidst che ’ and ‘Marry Me’. His attire us to favourites like ‘Forgive Me late King of Pop, Michael and moves reminded us of the his set, Jam threw himself Jackson himself! Della Ding Dang The crowd buzzed in anticipation of Della, who appeared on stage in a cutesy green and white romper. She revved the audience up with an explosive performance of ‘I’m A Little Bird’, urging us all to sing along – we found it difficult because of the crazily high notes! Della followed up with ‘Night Cat’ and Beyonce’s ‘Crazy In Love’, dance numbers which got us on our feet and grooving along. It’s amazing how her petite frame contains such energy, because Della even brought out cheerleaders to perform stunts alongside her. She relentlessly worked the audience, enticing us into hula-dancing with a sweet Hawaiian-type song. Completing her set with her hit ‘I Love Him’, Della blew it clean out of the water as we expected!

A-Mei The only singer who could end off this fantastic night, was none other than Mandopop’s biggest diva, A-Mei herself. The fans went crazy as soon as she appeared onstage, as she swept us all up in a frenzy of fast-paced songs and got us dancing along. We didn’t even mind that the LCD screens suddenly stopped showing live footage when she came on… Soon, A-Mei slowed the tempo down, and we got to listen to her serenade us with heart-wrenching tunes like ‘Hostage’ and ‘Remember’. The entire night turned into a huge sing-along session, as we were all definitely familiar with her repertoire! Unfortunately, A-Mei had lesser interaction with the audience compared to her counterparts. However, her powerhouse vocals more than made up for it! She rounded up the night with fist-pumping songs like ‘Fire’ and ‘Three Days Three Nights’, but not before announcing an upcoming album release, which we can’t wait to hear!

KINGS OF THE STAGE Pop-rock band We The Kings recently performed here for the first time. Rachel Yohannan discovers that they can sure put on a party!

as one. Letting their inhibitions go free, the crowd heeded his encouragement to join in doing “the most awkward dance ever”.

The night kicked off with ‘Queen of Hearts’ from the band’s latest album Somewhere Somehow, sending fans screaming and jumping around.

Things got heated when Travis stood atop the mosh pit barricade, where his pants were in danger of getting tugged down by wild fangirls! The other band members were happy to take a backseat in the area of audience interaction, letting their frontman run the show. However, the focus they gave their instruments more than made up for it because their delivery was spot-on. A silent star was drummer Danny Duncan, whose presence was strongly felt through his reverberating beats despite him being in the background.

“Why haven’t we come to Singapore before?” lead vocalist Travis Clark exclaimed incredulously at one point, after soaking in the crowd’s energy and enthusiasm. That’s what we’ve all been wondering as well, but fans were quick to forgive and reciprocated with more screams of excitement – guess it didn’t matter so long as the band was breathing the same air as them. And indeed, they did not disappoint. The generous two-hour set comprised mainly of the band’s hits, including ‘Skyway Avenue’, ‘We’ll Be A Dream’, and ‘Art of War’. During ‘I Feel Alive’, the fun-natured vocalist showed us some hilarious dance moves, which not only got us laughing, but also united all WTK fans

68 AUG 2014

Apart from their familiar singles, the quintet did a cover of Jimmy Eat World’s ‘The Middle’ – Travis’ all-time favourite song – where we were treated to a powerful guitar solo by lead guitarist Hunter Thomson.

Wrapping up the set with ‘Check Yes Juliet’, the hit that propelled them to fame, the five indulged us in a quick but rousing encore comprising of ‘Sad Song’ and ‘Stay Young’ before saying goodnight on a rather emotional note. It was great to finally hear them live, after years of rocking to their songs on the radio. We must say that it was worth the wait!

T

hey must have heard our pleas on social media, for We The Kings finally stopped by for their maiden gig here — and about time, too! Seeing as they’ve already had close to a decade in the music scene with a sizeable discography of four albums to their name, it’s no surprise that concert tickets were all snapped up by fans who had been patiently waiting for the longest time.

GOOD AS GOULD After a sold out show last year, we’re stoked that Ellie Goulding has returned for yet another spellbinding performance. Rachel Yohannan shares tidbits from her press conference and concert.

On Halcyon Days: “I wrote it in Southern Ireland. I just took my guitar, myself, and read a bunch of books and poetry, and that’s kinda how I wrote a lot of it. It was written by the sea, so it’s very sea-themed.”

On her youth: “I already had my lip pierced when I was 13 and had long dyed black hair down to my bum. I was a bit rebellious, but I was probably more insecure then than ever. I wish I could’ve told myself that everything’s gonna be alright. I didn’t think I’d be able to make a living out of making music, so I was very stressed not knowing where I was gonna go.”

PHOTOS: MARCUS LIN FOR NOW/LIVE

On 'Anything Can Happen’, her fave song to perform: “For some reason, it makes everyone really happy. Like I look around and… every single person has a smile on their face. It kinda brings everyone together. I think there’s something about it that makes everyone feel positive and I like that.”

On the World Cup: “I was actually reading a list of things to say if you don’t know much about football! Like if there’s a free kick, there’s a list of things to say, or if there’s a goal, there are exclamatory things. I genuinely enjoy watching it, but I don’t know much about it!”

Show Highlights

Given the pitch-perfect voc als on her albums, we always assumed that aut o-tune had some part to play. But the moment Ellie started with ‘Figure 8’, we were proved wrong! Without elaborate props or backup dancers, the focus was just on her voice. And while ma ny performers often have costume changes, the songstress remained in the same crop top and pants ensemble – all while showing off enviab le abs! Tracks that stood out we re an acoustic version of ‘Beating Heart’, which was in the movie Divergent, and ‘Lights’, wh en Ellie got everyone to wave around their mo bile phones. The theatre shone bright with tiers of light, ending her main set on a magical note. For her encore, Ellie came back with ‘You My Everyt hing’ and ‘Burn’, leaving us totally blissed out! Ho pe we hear news of a new album soon!

Dear readers, A local newspaper article featured a teenager who had gone on a binge drinking (drinking to excess) spree with friends and ended up being admitted to hospital with alcohol poisoning. The teenager drank three-quarters of a litre of vodka in two hours. The result – he became extremely nauseous and had to lean on his friend for support. His friend, who evidently was unaware of how drunk the teen was, pushed him away and he fell, hitting his head on the ground. This caused him to black out. He came to in an ambulance, and his friends told him that he had a seizure and was having fits. DANGER – the friends did not know how to handle a potentially deadly alcohol poisoning case.

What to do if a friend drinks to excess and develops alcohol poisoning 1. Never leave the person to sleep it off. 2. Call an ambulance. 3. Lay the person down. Gently turn the person on his/her side using a pillow or rolled-up jackets to be placed at the small of the back. It keeps the person in that position to prevent choking, should the person vomit. 4. Remain with the person until the ambulance arrives.

The legal drinking age in Singapore is 18. Those who deal with teenagers worry because there are many teenagers who indulge in binge drinking, unaware of the dangers of alcoholism. If you drink too much in a short space of time, alcohol has been known to poison the body, which could be deadly. It is frightening to learn that the over-consumption of alcohol affects the gag reflex that helps prevents choking. It is scary to learn that one can die by choking on one’s own vomit. When leaving clubs and lounges, the sight of drunk teenage guys and girls sitting on the kerb puking is not uncommon. Some are so intoxicated that they lie on the pavement. You see female drunks with their clothes in disarray. It is very sad that these young people opt to spend their weekends binge drinking. There is no glamour in lying in the street in your own vomit, is there?

92 AUG 2014

In case you don’t know it, people with style and class would never be caught in a drunken state. It is just not done. The next time you contemplate binge drinking, ask yourself – what am I trying to prove? Ask yourself – do I want to roll in my own vomit on the sidewalk? What if someone takes a photo or video and then puts it online? It’s too horrible to contemplate. Be warned. For those over 18, please drink responsibly. Remember, when you are drunk, you can’t enjoy yourself, as you don’t know what’s going on. Where’s the fun in that?

Underage drinkers Unfortunately, there is an increasing number of underage drinkers that party on weekends. Most of this group believe they will never get caught. This is a worrying trend. Underage drinking is illegal in Singapore.

POTENTIAL RISKS OF TEENAGE DRINKING 1. Alcohol harms the development of a teen’s brain and body. The Mayo Clinic states: “research also shows that alcohol use might permanently distort a teen’s mental development, cause liver damage, result in peptic ulcers and stomach cancer”. 2. Drinking interferes with good judgement resulting in the probability of engaging in risky behaviour (e.g. taking drugs, being a victim of random sexual encounters, engaging in unprotected sex that could result in getting a sexually transmitted disease or girls getting pregnant and not knowing who the father is. Girls could get drugged and raped). 3. Drunks may get into fights and injure themselves and others. 4. People who begin drinking in their teens are likely to develop an alcohol dependence when they become adults. 5. People can die as a result of binge drinking sessions.

Always here for you.

I’m here!

Seriously… no time to study… how? I am 14 this year and have been reading your column since I was nine. This is the first time I am writing to you. In a previous exam, I failed three subjects. I felt really down, but I admit I did not study hard enough. For the next exam, I decided to study really hard, but due to my busy schedule, I reach home at 7.30pm from Mondays to Fridays and am supposed to be in bed by 9.45pm. This is terrible because after dinner and a quick bath, it usually is 8.30pm. I have a little over an hour to do my homework and study. This means I do my homework and the studying is postponed. In the end, there is no time to study. Added to this is my short attention span. It is about 20 minutes. What I try to do is study for an hour before taking a 15-minute break. Unfortunately, little is absorbed. Please give me advice. Thank you, Kelly. From: Only 14

Kelly: You must be an advanced reader if you were able to read and understand my column at the age of nine. This should work in your favour when you revise your work. Because your standard of English is high, learning should be easier than for students who have the added burden of grappling with the complexities of the language. You state that your attention span is short. Here’s a thought – could it be that you are easily distracted and not really interested in studying, so you find it difficult to absorb the facts? I suggest you study for 20 minutes and take a five-minute break, which could involve getting a drink of water and standing at the window while focusing your eyes on distant objects.

Something else to keep you on the right path is to bear in mind the long-term effects of a lack of academic success. To succeed, and this is what you want since you wrote to me, you have to study diligently and maintain high scores. Get with it! It is worrying that you have to remain in school till late, arriving home at 7.30pm. why? CCA is not scheduled for five days a week. You should have a chat with your teachers if you are kept back so late. You must have sufficient time to do homework, rest and study daily. Speak to your teachers and see how you can adjust your schedules at school so you get home earlier. Best wishes.

Are you one of those who are easily distracted by your mobile phone? Do you rush to answer every time you receive a message or call? Well, if the answer is yes, then you have to leave electronic devices in another room when you are studying. You need to get your priorities right.

A Lack boying I like self-control is a problem Hey Kelly, I love reading your Dear Kelly column since I was in secondary 1. I have begun to realise that I am feeling quite frustrated and also get irritated, but I don’t know the reason for my feelings. Sometimes, when mum asks me for help, I flare up. I am beginning to realise my lack of control and I am worried. The situation is getting from bad to worse. My friends are telling me to “chill”. I feel quite guilty. At times, I feel really stressed over my relationship with my parents, my friends and even about what happens in daily life – the result: I cry my heart out. I hope you will give me some advice. From: Angry

Kelly: I am happy you “love reading” my column. It is good you wrote to me. I am pleased you admit you “get irritated”, and you “lack self-control”. The fact that it worries you, since friends have mentioned it, means you are ready to make changes in your life. Please ask one or both of your parents to take you to the doctor. Explain exactly your feelings, and say you are worried and it is interfering with your lessons. Mention your friends noticing your angry outbursts. And say you feel bad about flaring up when mum asks you “for help”. You may have anger issues that need to be addressed by a professional as soon as possible. I wish you good luck.
