What we know: DAI5Ys have been waiting for a Girl’s Day comeback since their last fulllength record Love back in 2015, but it looks like they’re gonna have to sit tight. Originally planning to return with an album in 2016, the quartet has since pushed back their comeback several times – possibly due to Dream T Entertainment and Elektromotive Group’s recent merger. And with news of their contract expiration edging closer, we couldn’t help but worry about it being the four-piece’s final release before their rumoured disbandment this July. On a lighter note, Minah did assure fans that she hopes “Girl’s Day would remain for a long time” in a previous interview, so let’s hope a renewal is in the cards!

We all know that Ed Sheeran had a hand in writing Justin Bieber’s behemoth smash for his Purpose album, but can you believe this enormously successful ditty was actually a reject chucked out of Ed’s upcoming record, Divide? “Going from a song that would have never been released to [being] the biggest song of [2015], it just shows you that you shouldn’t always write stuff off,” Ed divulged in a recent interview, but also making sure to give Biebs credit for working his magic on it. And the rest is history.
‘Little Things’ – One Direction
Before One Direction won over the hearts of every boyband-lovin’ fan out there, our resident songwriting genius was already paving the way for the Brit quintet’s impending global takeover – one song at a time, including ‘Moments’, ‘Over Again’ and ‘18’. Most memorable was ‘Little Things’, which Ed revealed that it contained some of his favourite lyrics ever. He admitted to penning the emotive ballad with his former flame when he was 17, but didn’t mind giving it to 1D in a bid to “try something different”. What a pal!

What happens when a moody starboy and a wholesome popstar rub shoulders at a party? Brace yourselves for the musical wonder that is ‘Dark Times’, an acoustic number off The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind The Madness album that materialised after a revelry-filled night out together. And the ‘Starboy’ crooner had plenty of lovely things to say about his partner: “I’ve written with a lot of people in my life, but [Ed] is the fastest and most talented songwriter I’ve ever worked with. If we stayed in the studio another week, we could’ve had a full album.” For the love of music, make it happen!
‘Cold Water ’ – Major Lazer (feat. Justin Bieber & MØ)
People are digging the new Justin Bieber sound right now, but he wouldn’t have done it without the help of Ed – and the funny thing is the latter wasn’t even aware that he’d created another hit for the Canadian heartthrob! “[‘Cold Water’] was a song I must’ve half-written somewhere,” the ‘Thinking Out Loud’ singer confessed, “And then the song came out, became number one and I was like ‘That kind of sounds like me. Oh wait, it was me.’” Geez, just imagine how amazing it would sound with Ed’s soothing pipes in the chorus...
‘I Was Made For Loving You’ – Tori Kelly
Tori Kelly has built up quite a name for herself since her American Idol days at 16, but it wasn’t until recently that the curly-haired sweetheart really blew up over the airwaves. One of the tracks that got us into the Tori goodness was her sizzling ballad with Ed, which was so undeniably romantic that fans couldn’t help but wonder if sparks flew between the twosome. But Tori was quick to squash the rumours, asserting that he’s “someone I consider a friend and even a mentor”. Oh well – let’s just sit back and listen to some good music, shall we?
‘Everything Has Changed’ – Taylor Swift
This one’s a classic, but we’d be doing the besties a disservice if this fan favourite didn’t make the list. It all started when Ed learned about T-Swift doodling his song lyrics on her arm during a show, before promptly collaborating with the golden girl on ‘Everything Has Changed’ for her Red album. Nothing seemed to have changed for the duo though, who proved to be as chummy as ever with sweet birthday tweets, support messages and all. Also, can we just say that Tay-Tay fangirling over ‘Shape of You’ on Instagram was downright adorable?

‘Tattoo’ – Hilary Duff
Probably only Ed Sheeran could get a pop diva like Hilary Duff to climb out of bed at midnight to record a song, and all it took was two hours for the power duo to produce this glorious gem of a track titled ‘Tattoo’. “He came into the vocal booth with me and I was really intimidated because they don’t normally do that,” she recalled. “So I kept being like, ‘You’re Ed Sheeran and I’m singing the song that you wrote and I want to do right by it’.” Although it didn’t make the final cut for her Breathe In. Breathe Out. album, Hilary did release a live acoustic performance of the unreleased track so be sure to check it out!

You’re My Asteroid It’s pretty undeniable that you’ve made a tremendous impact on my life. Like an ‘asteroid hitting Earth’ kind of impact. I know that seems like a bad thing but I assure you it isn’t. We really should have asteroid showers more often; drastic change is good. Sometimes I wish I had met you sooner, like in lower secondary or something. It’s kind of a shame that we spent only one year in school together. Imagine the amount of damage that could have been done if we had four years. I hope you know that when I say ‘damage’, I mean it in the most affectionate manner possible. Kudos to us though, for making the most out of only a year. This is the part where you roll your eyes, if you have not already begun. Anyway, as you can tell, this is obviously a heartfelt letter and those nostalgic tears should be filling your eyes to the brim. Right. About. Now. Or at the very least I hope I’m still as entertaining as ever.

Jokes aside, I really mean it when I say that you’re one of the few people who helped drive my life in the right direction, and I’ve reserved a section of my heart just for you. Thank you for walking into my life nearly seven years ago, and for staying put. I need you to know that I appreciate every single time you’ve purposefully corrected my grammar and spelling, and for kicking me (and other people) out of class multiple times because bailing on English homework was trending. It takes way more effort to call people out on their shortcomings and pinpoint mistakes. Especially if they don’t directly impact you, letting things slip is always easier. So what I’m trying to say is that I sincerely love you for everything you’ve done for me and my lovely classmates from 4E2 (batch of 2009). You know we all love you, from the bottom of our hearts.

When I was young, I kept hearing the saying “A parents’ love is unconditional” but I never understood the meaning behind it. Growing up with three other siblings, I used to think that it’s your duty to provide me what I need, in terms of education and basic necessities. It’s mummy’s duty to wake me up and make me breakfast, papa’s duty to ensure my family is well-fed and to buy me the latest mobile phone. It wasn’t until I went abroad for my studies in Australia that I realised how much I’ve taken my parents for granted. There, I had no one to turn to and rely on. Nobody was around to wake me up in the morning, prepare dinner for me after a long day, or to change my bedsheets when I’m super tired. Now that I’m back in my homeland, I’ve begun to see mummy and papa in a new light. I learned to appreciate the little things that you did for me. It was never mummy’s duty to wake me up every morning and ensure I get to school on time, nor was it papa’s duty to buy me a new phone. But you did it anyway – to make sure I get the best education, and to make me look ‘cool’ in front of my friends with the latest gadgets. Now that I’m in my twenties, I finally understood the sacrifices you’ve made for the family. You sacrificed your hobbies or buying a fancy new phone, so you can save up for our university fees or to bring us for a holiday. Life is unpredictable and they can’t be there forever. So I just want to say: I love you mummy and papa. Thank you for your unconditional love for us, putting a roof over our head and food on our table. I’m grateful and fortunate to have you.
