Ed's Note LOVING THIS MONTH:

We celebrate two big events this month –

along with cool cafe suggestions

(p. 12) for your next date. It’s not all rainbows and butterflies though; we

share some true-life accounts of relationships gone wrong (p. 76) that we can all learn a lesson or two from. At the risk of sounding like a preachy adult, teenage relationships are often

distracting and fleeting. Think

about this: your teenage years will

be the best years of your life –

don’t spend them pining for someone,

or being heartbroken. Instead, invest the time and effort in yourself – develop hobbies, read, engage in sports and aim to be the best version of youself. Keep your priorities in check, and the rest will

fall into place.

Remember: if you can’t love yourself, how can others love you? With love,

Your Say Letter of the month Dear Teenage, It’s been long since I purchased another issue of Teenage magazine. I have been so busy lately that I didn’t have the time to head down to any convenience store. PREP 04

Open House Guide

CCAs The polytechnics offer a plethora of interest groups and sports teams for you to participate in after school hours. Find out which groups the polytechnics are particularly famous for, and think about the possibility of joining something that you’re not familiar with. After all, school is a great platform to pick up new hobbies, that could develop into future opportunities. Universities and employers also look at the activities you do outside your school curriculum, so the time you invest in your CCAs will definitely make your resume shine.

The Polytechnic Open Houses can be pretty overwhelming, here’s how you can make the most out of it.

Before attending:

Check out the school website to find out the list of available courses and most importantly, their entry requirements.

Shortlist some courses that you might want to pursue. Then, find out where the activities for these courses will take place during the Open House so that you can concentrate on them while you’re there.

It’s good to research on the modules you will be taking during the course of your studies to prepare yourself mentally for what’s expected of you.

Speak to your family and school seniors to get their opinion on the courses and schools.

When you are there, look out for:

Send your letters to TEENAGE Magazine, 20 Bedok South Road Singapore 469277 or email to marketing@key-editions.com

Course booths The Polytechnic Open Houses have an almost carnival-like atmosphere, and can be confusing for some. But stay focused! Get the important things out of the way first so that you can have fun later. Make a beeline for the course booths so you can direct any queries to the relevant course representatives. Prepare a list of questions to ask regarding the courses you have shortlisted. For example, you might want to enquire about the workload, internship opportunities, and employability potential.

Facilities If you’re planning on studying something niche, check out how the school can enrich your learning through the campus facilities. If you’re keen on a science-related course, are the labs clean and big? If you’re keen on a hospitality course, do they have mock setups for you? These factors are important to ensure you get hands-on learning experience as opposed to just theoretical knowledge. Sports enthusiasts might also want to check out the facilities they have for sports and exercise because you’d be spending half the time in school training.

Seminars, workshops and guided tours Workshops and seminars offer an overview of courses, details on career prospects or further education, and can help you in making a decision on your next step in the next phase of your life. Guided tours will give you a sense of the place you’ll call your second home for the next three years. Make sure to register beforehand for the guided tours on their respective websites!

Singapore Polytechnic

Singapore’s oldest polytechnic produced the likes of singer, Tanya Chua and Singapore Idol winner, Taufik Batisah.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic

NP’s Ideawerkz Innovation Fund (IIF), which is open to all full-time NP students, is a seed funding that provides students the opportunity to try out an idea with up to $2,000 funding.

Temasek Polytechnic

Seniors and staff Don’t be shy! Talk to seniors to get insights on the school culture and learning environment, tips and anecdotes which only students can tell you. Find out the latest course syllabus and what to expect when it comes to assignments and exams. They can also advise you on ways to juggle your studies to ensure you make the most out of your time in polytechnic. Remember to also speak to academic staff to hear about the experience from their point of view, and on the kinds of support you can get from the school. It’s a completely new study environment from what you’re used to in secondary school, so it’s good to know what you’re in for.

Tips!

Don’t go home empty-handed – bring a bag to store all the handouts you’ll be collecting.

Second year Diploma in Social Services (Social Work) students put up a musical production, The Prison Within, to raise awareness on the reintegration of exoffenders in society.

Beat the crowd by going early. A full Open House experience takes about four to six hours, and you’d want sufficient time to get all your queries answered.

This month’s Teenage magazine appeared right on time! I really admire Ariana Grande, not only for her voice but also for her selfless character. My mum bought it for me when she was at the supermarket as there are some guides to start my tertiary education – just what I needed! As I’m heading to college, this issue is really relevant for me.

Please include your name, NRIC no., address, contact no. and email address.

Not only will I get to receive a poster of Ariana Grande, I’ll also get tips and guidance before I enter poly!

Teenage magazine also helped me with my preparation for the ‘O’ Levels; it has been with me through my tough times. The magazine never fails to help me in whatever situation I’m in and I’m really thankful for Teenage. I usually take a break from my studies by reading the food and fashion sections in the magazine. Teenage allows us to find our own identity and to understand ourselves even better. I think that Teenage magazine is a must-have in every teenager’s life. Thank you Teenage, and the editor and writers for doing such a great job in making the magazine really successful! Congratulations Love, Wei Yi

Wei Yi, your letter has been picked as the ‘Letter of the Month’!

section. I adore the posters that come with each issue. The most attentiongrabbing would have to be the Tuckshop section with pictures of food that makes me drool, and my stomach grumble.

This month’s ‘Letter of the Month’ wins a set of Aéropostale Valentine’s Day gifts worth $159.60. The set consists of Cloud 9 Fragrance, League 87 Cologne and two fleece blankets.

Dear Teenage, I never fail to grab a copy of Teenage magazine every month and I’m always anticipating the next issue. The designs and articles printed on the pages are always unexpected and appealing, especially the interviews in the celebrity

Being a self-conscious teenager, I am concerned about my appearance, and my main concerns are zits and breakouts. I love your product recommendations. My favourite article in the January issue would have to be the one on making New Year resolutions, as it helped me create a list of realistic goals and tasks. In all, the articles in Teenage made me a better person. Thanks Teenage! With love, Fiona

Do-It-Yourself

Made With Love Call us old school, but we prefer impressing our Valentine with homemade gifts that come from the heart. And it’s real easy! By Chew Hui Ling

straw craft

Here’s a fun way to display your initials so a) everybody will know that he/she’s taken and b) they will never forget about your existence, plus it’s a wonderful gift that all the sentimental lovers will definitely appreciate. To start off, draw out your partner’s initials on a piece of paper, then cut paper straws into the respective lengths to fill in the alphabet. Glue the straws into place and let it dry completely. Once that is done, slip the art piece into a photo frame and voila!

All About The Vase Instead of picking up a last-minute bouquet at the local florist, why not make this Valentine’s Day extra special by gifting your blooms in a handcrafted decorative vase? Using a repurposed tin can or old jar as the base, simply cut patterned paper straws into equal lengths and stick them around the sides of the can with glue or double-sided tape. The result? A jazzed-up statement piece that boldly declares your love. You can even surprise your darling by attempting your own one-of-a-kind flower arrangement!

Sweet Sips You can’t go wrong with cute mugs, but putting a creative DIY spin to it will help you score extra points! Taking a plain white mug and some metallic markers, feel free to personalise it with any design that symbolises your affections. With just a couple minutes of your time, you can craft these effortless creations that look just like the pricey ones in stores. If you intend to use the cups for consumption,

tip! make sure to use porcelain paint pens to create designs that are non-toxic and washable.

Cleanser The basis of every skincare regimen starts with clean skin. If you wear makeup, ensure that it is properly removed before cleansing. Although some favour the squeaky clean feeling after cleansing, this actually means that your skin is being dried out – instead, pick one that doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight. Do remember to rinse the neckline and jawline to prevent residual soapsuds from clogging your skin.

Toner The traditional purpose of toners is to bring back the pH level to skin’s natural acidity after cleansing, as most soap-based products are alkaline. That said, toners do offer the added benefit of cleaning off hard-to-remove products like sunscreen. If you have troubled skin, look out for ingredients like salicylic acid, which will help to lift dead skin cells to prevent the clogging of pores.

Triple Threat

What’s a good way to get noticed by Bii, Ian Chen or Dino Lee? The golden boys of Mandopop answer our questions ‘bout girls, fans, celebrity crushes and more. By Johanna Teo

Without directly confessing your feelings, how would you express your affections for your crush?

Bii: I’d do thoughtful things. Observe and pay attention to her every day so that I’ll know what she needs without her telling me. These actions will make her wonder if I like her because I’m being so thoughtful. Dino: The most obvious way would be

me coming to her aid whenever she needs help. Ian: I’ll show more care for the girl I like, because I seldom interact much with the opposite gender. If I really like that girl, I’ll talk more to her and take more initiative to get to know her better.

What’s been weighing on your mind recently?

Bii: I’ve been filming recently, so aside from thinking about song composing, I’ve been reflecting on how to become better as an actor, to bring a surprising performance that’ll impress the audience. That’s all I’ve been thinking of. Dino: I’ve been doing a lot of song composing, because it’s something new that I want to explore. Ian: Well, I’ve been thinking a lot about getting into a relationship (laughs). It’s getting very cold in Taiwan, and walking around in the cold wind makes me feel lonely. It’ll be nice to have someone by my side, but unfortunately I haven’t

52

met such a person yet… I fill the gap by watching Korean dramas.

What’s a surefire way to impress you?

Dino: If I don’t have feelings for that girl, I wouldn’t be able to like her no matter what she does for me. Bii: Me too. It’s based on ‘that’ feeling. Dino: It helps if we click, and especially if we can chat casually as well as bond over mutual interests.

How about your fans – what would be a good way to stand out amongst the rest? Dino: I will notice fans who leave comments with more depth and thought. For example [with regards to my songs], if they ask questions about the lyrics, or tell me how that song makes them feel. Bii: I’ll always notice fans, be it if they’re online leaving comments, or coming to our shows in real life, although they

ii’s quiet and intense, Ian Chen’s adorably flirty, and Dino Lee’s the boyishly cute one – which makes this trio especially dangerous, because these dudes will definitely meet your every criteria. After our exclusive interview with the three lads when they were in town to promote their collaboration album, Unstoppable 3-Epochal Times, we were thoroughly convinced that these guys won’t stop till they’ve conquered every available fangirl’s heart.

forward to our next meeting. That type of yearning can also be inspiration for a song...

If you guys were the kings of the ear th for a day, what laws would you impose?

Dino: Support piracy-free music, and everybody should buy a copy of our albums. Bii: Global support for Eagle Music [record label]. That would be enough for me. Dino: For everyone to give me a dollar… Wow that would be a lot of money. Ian: Since it’s make-believe, I’d make a law where there isn’t a law. I’d like to see what happens during that day. It should be very interesting. Bii: It’ll be very scary!

Tell us something interesting that happened when you were a teenager.

would think that I don’t notice them. There was once, I read a message left by a fan who hoped that I’ll notice her at a show later on, and I did – I stared at her [intensely] throughout the show, just to let her know that I’m aware of her presence (laughs). Although I’m unable to pay attention to all of our fans, I do try my best to. It’s a cute way to show that.

Have you experienced unrequited love, where you were left pining for someone?

Ian: I guess it’s more of waiting [and pining] for inspiration, especially while writing songs. The process can get quite agonising at times because inspiration is not something you can produce immediately. Sometimes it takes ages in-between writing each lyric and you’ve to keep thinking about it while waiting for that flash of inspiration. Dino: I had a long-distance relationship with my ex-girlfriend in Taiwan while I was in America, where we’d always look

Bii: I was in a band back in school and I loved performing and entering competitions. When I got the prize money, I’d buy guitar amps and keyboards... I got a lot of satisfaction from that. The music I played back then was a mesh of underground and poprock genres. Dino: The most vivid memory was when I broke my arm. I was playing basketball and fell when I tried to do a slam-dunk. I had to have two operations... Ian: My first kiss. It was outside my tuition centre, and literally right after I had my first kiss, my mum rode past on a bicycle. It was so awkward (laughs). I’m guessing she saw everything. It was funny because I felt like I had to be sneaky about getting my first kiss, but I ended up getting caught by my mum.

If you could tell someone anything at all, what would you say and why? Dino: I just actually want to shout. There are too many things that’ll [make it easier] to shout [to vent] instead of complaining.

53

Did you know? Weird habits

Reel Romance Our favorite month for the celebration of love is here again! We’ve picked some new movies you can catch for date nights, and also some Valentine’s Day classics to cuddle up to. Teenage recommends flicks that different couples can enjoy. By hairin rahman

For the in-denial couple and Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort). Although riddled with witty dialogues, this romantic flick does get emotionally intense so prepare your tissue boxes. The movie explores the volatility of life, and is incredibly mature for the YA genre.

It seems that this pair is perpetually stuck in friendzone even though they’ve met each other’s friends, families and pets and you’re pretty tired of convincing them that their definition of ‘relationship’ is a little warped. What they need is a movie that provides a simple visual representation of what a relationship entails since they just don’t seem to get it.

Hazel: “But Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am, for our little infinity. You gave me a forever, within the numbered days. And for that I am... I am eternally grateful.”

The Fault in Our Stars

Based on the novel by John Green, this one’s a tearjerker about two teenagers stricken with cancer, showcasing the lovely romance between Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley)

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (11 Feb)

The in-denial couple might appreciate this Jane Austen classic, Pride and Prejudice, portrayed in a different light with the addition of... zombies! Elizabeth Bennet (played by Lily James) and Mr Darcy (played by Sam Riley), join forces to deal with a zombie invasion, and in the process, fall in love.

For the highachieving couple

We all know that one couple who are intellectual soulmates, often vying to be at the top of their class. In reality, we’re just glad they found each other and saved the rest of us from having to suffer from abject insecurity. Movies that feature power couples or epic biographies should resonate really well with these people.

Truth (18 Feb)

Truth follows the drama behind a 2004 report broadcast by CBS national news about the preferential treatment given to President George W. Bush by the Texas Air National Guard in the early 1970s. The accuracy of the report and authenticity of the documents used as evidence were questioned, which eventually led to the firing of those involved, including the producer of 60 Minutes Wednesday, a prime time news programme, and a news anchor.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Quick-witted conversations, check. Gorgeous couple, check. Drama and action, check check check. Our favourite bad-ass marriedcouple-who-turn-outto-be-assassins would provide some delightful entertainment for our highachieving couple, because despite everything, we know Mr. and Mrs. Smith were made for each other. Jane Smith: “Wait, why do I get the girl gun?” John Smith: “Are you kidding me?”

Exploring singapore The shopaholics

Instead of buying things your other half might not like, decide on a budget and bring each other shopping. To make the challenge more interesting, go out of town and head for the heartlands instead. Explore malls you normally wouldn’t go to, or even flea markets for some great bargains.

The Home Cooks

Show off your prowess in the kitchen with a home-cooked meal for two. If cooking up a storm requires too much effort (not to mention cleaning), try preparing a small picnic basket or bento instead. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at a park or garden, talking about everything under the sun.

The Wanderlusters

Travelling out of Singapore might be out of the question for you guys but there’s no reason not to experience a chilly Valentine’s Day in Singapore! Build a snowman or battle it out with a snowball fight at Snow City, or simply learn how to ice skate at The Rink at JCube.

East for a splashing good time. Some rides require more than two people, so rally a few more couples to come along for a group date.

The Fake Tourists Pretend to be on vacation by hitting up tourists hotspots like Chinatown, Gardens by the Bay or Singapore Zoo. You might just find out a tit-bit or two about these places that you never knew.

Escape from the dreaded heat with a date at a waterpark! Visit the Adventure Cove Waterpark at Resorts World Sentosa or Wild Wild Wet at Downtown

Be thrilled by the adrenaline of fast cars at the KF1 Karting Circuit this Valentine’s Day. Better yet, make it a group date with a few other couples and race each other. Do note that there are dress codes and rules to note before you head down. Check out www.kf1karting. com for more details.

The gamers

The Nature Lovers Flora and fauna lovers would enjoy a short respite from city life by immersing themselves in Mother Nature. Go for a hike at Hort Park, or take a trip to Coney Island.

The Foodies The Water Babies

The adventurous

Plan your gastronomic journey to sample Singapore’s best hawker fare. Start from Chinatown Complex Food Cenre for yong tau foo, then make your way to Hong Lim Food Centre for some curry mee.

75

Whether you prefer video games or board games, spend some time playing them with your significant – you can learn a lot about a person from the way they strategise or how they handle defeats and victories. Informal multiplayer card games like Exploding Kittens or Cards Against Humanity are great for breaking the ice.

the music obsessed

For pairs who like to sing the night away, plan a karaoke night for two – what could be more romantic than crooning a cheesy duet together? Or if your beloved enjoys surprises, call up their fave radio station to dedicate a song. Even better, show up with tickets to a concert they’ve been wanting to see!

DearKelly Dear readers, I have received letters from distraught Teenage readers relating to this topic. We are going to review the recently published

Norton Cyber Security Insight Report

You will see what happens when people disregard the rules.

Rules to follow:

1 2 3 4 5

Never share your password Never reveal your password

Password protect your devices Avoid lending your phone to others unless you are present to see what is going on

Avoid leaving your mobile devices unattended

A cybercrime report released recently stated that a fifth of

Singaporeans share their passwords. Most passwords shared were to email accounts. However, some were for social media and even for bank accounts. (Bank accounts should be kept strictly private.)

The report found that of the 1,009 Singaporeans surveyed, a quarter do not password protect their devices – this is the same as leaving your front door open.

that 80 per cent of Singaporeans were anxious of being victims of cybercrime. Those surveyed felt that identity theft is more likely now than before and most said that sharing email passwords is riskier than loaning someone your car. This is because cybercrime, including credit card fraud, stolen identities and hacked accounts, is on the rise in Singapore. Worse was the point that criminals are becoming harder to arrest. Singapore is a target because of its wealth and high connectivity. An expert has compared Singapore to a “pot of gold” where cyber criminals are concerned.

Protecting yourself Please take note – make it a point to protect yourself

1 2 3 4 5 6

Use a password Make your password complex Change your password regularly Don’t share your password with anyone When travelling abroad, deactivate the magnetic strip on credit cards to prevent cloning. Avoid sharing your account information with e-commerce sites.

Everyone reading this letter is encouraged to share the information with family and friends. It is better to be safe than sorry. Always here for you.

Ironically, most Singaporeans surveyed are aware of this but fail to act in their own interest. The survey reported

Happy Chinese New Year to everyone celebrating the Lunar New Year! Wishing everyone good health, good fortune, happiness and fun with family and friends. I hope you all enjoy a trip to Chinatown to see the magnificent lights, the lavish decorations and appreciate the electric atmosphere as you, your family and friends mingle with the festive crowd. Appreciate the decorations and maybe buy a potted plant. Don’t forget the Chinese New Year goodies that are a great draw for both locals and tourists.

It is a time for families to get together for the reunion dinner when young and old enjoy each other’s company. The young should ask the older generation to recount what the festivities were like in the olden days. Take photographs so you will have precious memories. A video might be a nice keepsake. I will be visiting my Chinese friends to wish them a Happy New Year. This is the wonderful thing about being Singaporean –

we share each other’s festive joy. God bless all.

Those writing in know and seek her tough love, nononsense approach. Readers wanting a different type of response should seek advice elsewhere. Porn on phone Dear Kelly,

I regularly read your column and like how you advise those who write to you. I am 15-years-old. One day while watching a basketball game, a classmate asked to borrow my phone to call her mum. I said okay. I did not password protect my phone. Suddenly one of the class bullies grabbed my phone from the girl and ran off. He came back about 15 minutes later and threw the phone on my bag. The next day my teacher told me to report to the discipline master and take my phone with me. When I saw the discipline master he asked me to show him certain things I saved on the phone.

He did a quick check and then said, “This is porn!” I was shocked. I had never seen porn before. I told the discipline master this. He said my classmate made a report about viewing pornography on my phone. I said this guy grabbed my phone, many classmates saw him do this, and ran off with it. I said he must

have downloaded the porn and made a report to get me into trouble.

Kelly: Everyone reading the above letter should learn certain important lessons. Get a password. Don’t tell it to anyone.

Never let anyone run off with your phone. You should have gone to the General Office and made a report. You have no idea what your phone could be used for. Anything can happen as you discovered.

The discipline master was very angry. I am a prefect and do well in the exams. Together we hurried to class, and he demanded the class bully take out his phone. True enough, porn was found on his phone. When he was asked why he did what he did, he boldly replied, “For fun!” His parents were called in to see the principal. I don’t know what was said but he stopped bullying. However, none of us wanted to talk to him. I learnt a valuable lesson. Kelly, please share some thoughts about phone safety. From: Lesson learnt

discipline master that you watch porn. And why? “For fun!” This is most troubling. You are fortunate that your classmates could vouch for your innocence or you could have gotten into trouble. Imagine your parents being called in, your reputation ruined, being stripped of you prefect badge, being gossiped about.

Other letters in this issue will highlight what could happen if you don’t keep a strict check on your phone. Pay attention to what happened to several readers who shared their problems in this issue.

No more lending your phone to anyone unless you are present to see what is happening. Immediately make

As you discovered, the bully downloaded porn on your phone then told the

a report to the school authorities should anyone run off with your phone or other devices.
