Ed's Note Hey everybody, Another year, another 365 days filled with
infinite possibilities.
The Year of the Hartono is upon us!
Our cover guy Nathan Hartono rose to international fame (like finally) last year and we’re betting that 2017 has got even brighter things in store. Check out our exclusive interview (p. 40) with the trailblazer, where he details
hilarious anecdotes and shares his thoughts
on the future.
We’ve assembled a back-to-school special
filled with essentials ranging from the practical:
organisational apps (p.14), and self-help books
(p.68), to the lifestyle essentials like grab-andgo eateries (p.10) and campus fashion inspirations (p.34), to minimalist workspace DIYs (p.16) and more. Not forgetting our annual Passport
To Your Future, a complete guide to your tertiary education and beyond.
As 2017 begins, we asked nine millennials: “What’s a change you would like to see in
2017?” (p. 78) Their thought-provoking submissions on the changes they’d like to see
both in themselves and in society, are inspiring
and insightful. I firmly believe that change
begins from yourself. You can only hope to influence someone else for the better by leading by example. And thus, I ask you, dear readers, “What change would you like to see?” We’d love to hear your thoughts, so write to us and share your story. Till then, go slay 2017 – you’ve got this! Love,
Johanna 6
Your Say Letter of the month
Holler at us! We want to know what you think of Teenage, how our stories make a difference in your life, and where we can improve. Here’s how!
Dear Teenage,
Dear Teenage,
As we approach a new year, I thought that I would take some time to share my thoughts about Teenage – my favourite magazine of all time.
I love Teenage magazine and have been reading it ever since secondary one – now I am 16 and going through the next phase of my life. Teenage has been by my side and helped me a lot, whether it’s keeping up with social issues or picking up fashion and beautyrelated information.
In 2017, I’ll be 21. Yes, I’m no longer a teenager but reading Teenage makes me feel like I’m 17 again! I’m always inspired by the various looks that the Teenage team curates for each and every issue and honestly, I’ve learnt a whole lot of beauty tips throughout the years.
From the practical-minded to the high-roller, this comprehensive holiday gift guide will have you covered for everyone on your list.

The cover for December’s issue was so different from the usual. At first glance, I thought that it was just some other pretty magazine and I literally had a jaw-drop reaction when I realised that it was Teenage! I’m really inspired by the feature stories in the last issue of 2016 and I hope there’s more to come. Till then, thank you Teenage for always coming in handy during my teenage days. As a makeup fanatic, I love the beauty pages as it allows me to know what’s in trend and what makeup products would best fit my needs. For this month’s edition, I especially love the ‘All I Want For Christmas Is...’ gift guide because it not only helped me to find perfect gifts for my friends, but also what I can buy to pamper myself without overspending this festive season! As 2017 arrives, I hope to see more budget beauty stories where readers, especially students, can see what kind of looks they can go for even when they are on a budget. This would be a great start for the year as I am sure everyone would want to save up their angpoh money. I am really looking forward to the New Year and a brand new issue from Teenage! Love, Xaveir

Park Bench Deli 179 Telok Ayer Street www.parkbenchdeli.com
A favourite haunt among sandwich-lovin’ millennials, Park Bench Deli (PBD) specialises in big kid, over-thetop creations that come loaded with massive chunks of meats, crunchy greens and cheesy goodness between two slices of homemade bread. Aside from the usual savoury suspects, those with a sweet tooth can also try out their intriguing versions of Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich ($8) and Hot Butter Ball Sandwich ($16). If the CBD area’s too inaccessible for you, worry not ‘cause PBD delivers straight to your doorstep. Plus, these folks are so generous with their servings that you’re likely to have leftovers for days. Recess plans, sorted!

VendCafe (Chef In Box)
320C Anchorvale Drive, #01-K1, Singapore 543320 www.chefinbox.com.sg Mention vending machine and snacks like potato chips, cookies or candy would probably come to mind – but VendCafe’s Chef-In-Box machine dispenses round-the-clock, ready-made bento offerings in less than three minutes. Popping up in a void deck at the heartlands, this new unmanned establishment rolls out a variety of local flavours like Yangzhou Brown Rice and Seafood Hor Fun, as well as Western fare like Mac & Cheese and Salted Egg Yolk Pasta upon a touch of a button. Although the cafe lacks seating capacity and popular dishes are mostly sold out by dinnertime, busy students would still appreciate the convenience appeal and wallet-friendly prices ($3.50 to $5).
Fasta
26 Beach Road, South Beach Avenue #B1-23, Singapore 189768 www.fasta.com.sg Craving for pasta, but pressed for time? At this new fusion pasta cafe located at the heart of South Beach Avenue, patrons get served gourmet pasta in as little as five minutes (Fasta, geddit?)! Choose from a selection of warm bowls such as Scallop Wallop ($12) and Shio Ba Mee ($9.50), along with cold bowls such as Smokey Quacky Ducky ($9.50) and Vegan Fox ($8). Likewise, you can also DIY your own Fasta Bowl with your choice of carbs, meats, toppings and dressing at just $8.50. And we like that the chefs don’t skimp on quality despite their efficiency, all without burning a hole in our pockets!

STRINGS ATTACHED
Here’s an unconventional way to allow yourself extra work space all while giving your room a minimalist appeal. To make a hanging shelf, drill four holes on a round wooden plank (with adult supervision), pass four separate ropes through the holes and knot them at the bottom to keep them in place. Tie the four loose ends together and attach them to a hook on the ceiling.
TIME CHECK
Super simple yet eyecatching, this graphic wall clock will add that insouciant yet chic touch to your study desk. All you have to do is to spray half a cork stand in your desired colour, drill a hole in the middle of it and insert clock hands through the hole and attach it to the movement. Tip: we got our clock parts by dismantling a table clock!

Lights, Camera, Action With 2017 comes a long lineup of epic blockbusters – grab your popcorn and get ready. By Intan Nurshakinah
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter 2 fe b
Starring: Milla Jovovich, Ali Lar ter, Shawn Roberts, Lee Jun Ki, Ruby Rose, Iain Glen , Eoin Macken It’s been 15 long years and way too many zombies, but the million-dollar Resident Evil franchise is finally coming to a conclusion in its sixth chapter. Picking up exactly where Resident Evil: Retribution left off, Alice, the sole survivor of the T-virus apocalypse of The Hive, and
what’s left of the other survivors prepare themselves for mankind’s final stand against the evil Umbrella Corporation and its massive army of the undead. Amongst the familiar faces reprising their roles, try spotting Lee Joon Ki (Scarlet Heart: Ryeo) who makes his Hollywood debut as the evil Commander Lee in the final instalment of this series.

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewar t, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen
as the genetically enhanced mutant, will you be be ready to say goodbye to the best Wolverine ever?
Logan 2 Ma r
Set years after the epilogue of X-Men: Days of Future Past, the fearsome Wolverine’s regenerative abilities are weakening – with greying hair and scars leaving telltale signs all over his battle-ravaged body. A mysterious girl, Laura, appears with similar powers as the Wolverine and it becomes Logan’s responsibility to help the girl survive from those who wants to kill her. As compared to the previous X-Men films, this last instalment focuses less on action-packed scenes and takes on a darker, more poignant tone as it explores the finality of a superhero’s inevitable last days. With Logan also marking the end of Hugh Jackman’s 17-year stint
Kong: Skull Island 9 Ma r
Starring: Tom Hiddleston , Samuel L. Jackson , John Goodman , Brie Larson, Jing Tian , Toby Kebbell A modern reboot to the King Kong franchise, Kong: Skull Island follows a group of adventurers and soldiers who are brought together to explore the depths of an uncharted island. 2K17 Music Frenzy
Who will take the crown as the shiniest comeback acts of 2017? By Gladys Lee
Iggy Azalea The Aussie rapper’s first album The New Classic was a bona fide hit that left us thirsting for more Iggy-Iggs, so we were all majorly disappointed when the release of her sophomore album Digital Distortion was pushed back. Word has it that Iggy’s album will definitely drop this month, so let’s all keep an ear out for her fancy stuff!
Zara Larsson Toting hits like ‘Never Forget You’, ‘Ain’t My Fault’ and ‘Lush Life’, it’s little wonder Zara Larsson’s blazing through the music scene. When asked about her upcoming January release, the 18-year-old Swedish hitmaker confesses, “It’s done – I’m happy with all the records on it. I actually feel like I have too many good songs. It was really hard to pick out the final cuts.” And with her lush vocals and knack for churning out hits, we’re willing to bet her star’s gonna shine even brighter in 2017.
Ariana Grande Coldplay Fret not, A Head Full of Dreams will not be Coldplay’s final anthem. The guys are back in the studio creating new sounds, namely an EP titled Kaleidoscope, which Chris Martin promises will be released this year. In the meantime, Coldplay fans can satiate themselves by attending the band’s sold-out show in Singapore!
58
With Ariana dropping hints on Snapchat about being “almost done with an album” (this was back in November) and her fast and furious albumdropping records, fans will definitely get to enjoy #AG4 in 2017. And although no release dates have been mentioned, Ari did sneakily mention something about playing brand new tunes during her Dangerous Woman World Tour – it ends on 17 June, so perhaps we’ll be seeing new material before then?
Super Junior We haven’t seen Super Junior since their 10th anniversary comeback so ELFs will be buzzin’ with excitement to hear that the boyband is making a comeback this year. Although there hasn’t been an official date, this news came from leader Leeteuk himself – let’s not doubt this angel of a leader.
Katy Perry Katy’s new album is definitely on 2017’s horizon, what with three registered songs and a confirmed tour this year. Interestingly enough, the ‘Roar’ songstress’ tunes are titled, ‘Crocodile Tears’, ‘She’s So Creepy’ and ‘In Flames’, and everyone’s been wondering if these tracks are Katy’s long overdue clapback to Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’. Celeb feuds aside, we’re honestly psyched to hear what Katy’s been so painstakingly working on in the studio.
The 1975
Lorde Everything Lorde touches has turned into music magic and we’re sure her next record’s no exception. “I just need to keep working a while longer to make it as good as it can be. You’ll have to hold on.” With a release expected early this year, Lorde’s infallible ability of weaving razor-sharp lyrics into haunting indie-pop melodies, makes her next release worth the wait.
59
Charli XCX Looks like Charli’s on the cusp of a worldwide takeover! Shortly after her single ‘After the Afterparty’ dropped last October, the pop sensation confirmed a May album release, promising EDM-heavy party tracks that are also “the most pop thing I’ve done”.
The 1975 has been dropping random album hints – frontman Matt Healy tweeted “New The 1975 – 2017” while drummer George Daniel captioned ‘2018’ on an Insta-vid of Matty playing the keyboard. While we’re hoping it’ll be released soon, we can’t help but remember the time where Matty tweeted the title of I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It two years before it was released. Quit playing with us!

Leather-Crafting The art of traditional crafting is becoming increasingly popular and with good reason – there’s no ending to the list on what this versatile medium can be used to create once you’ve mastered the basic skills, techniques and knowledge of leather-crafting. With that said, the foundations of leather crafting isn’t as easy to pick up online; there are plenty of workshops that will provide guidance from experienced instructors, along with the proper tools and materials needed. For artisans seeking more advanced workshops, you may want to explore the world of leathermarbling and leather-embossing to personalise all the accessories, bags and notebooks you’ll be crafting.

Speaking from experience, creating floral arrangements definitely involves more than cutting off thorns and arranging blooms willy nilly. Luckily, there are workshops that cover the basics, from choosing the freshest blooms, to layering complementary florals and foliage. Plus, you’ll learn all about floral care, bouquet arrangement trends, amongst other techniques. Whether it’s gifting your loved one a floral bouquet, or creating gorgeous centrepieces and decoration, your experience will definitely be an etheral one. For the uninitiated, modern calligraphy involves the usage of a dip pen, metal nib and ink, while brush calligraphy uses a brush pen – the simplicity of tools needed to get started is why brush calligraphy is so popular amongst beginners. Contrary to the effortless pieces you’ve seen on Instagram or Pinterest, mastering the art of modern and brush calligraphy takes tons of practice and patience. And there’s always something more to learn and experiement with calligraphy, like watercolour, foiling, ombre effects and more. And who knows? This new hobby may turn into a cool moneymaking opportunity, like Suits actress Meghan Markle, who was a freelance calligrapher to the stars before her acting career took off!
Disc Jockey Calling out all audiophiles – unleash your musical creativity by mixing your own sick beats! Truth be told, learning how to be a disc jockey (DJ) isn’t something you can pick up without attending lessons because of all the equipment and technicalities involved. Along your journey of becoming a disc jockey, you’ll be learning how to use the turntable, basic beat matching and pitching, working with music software and mixers etc. While lessons are pretty pricey, a few secondary schools have already added DJ-ing as a co-curricular activity to further allow students to explore their music interests. Not only will this skill come in handy for events and gatherings, you may even be able to pursue it as a fullfledged career alongside famous names like Diplo and Skrillex. Maybe you’ll have your own set at the next Ultra Music Fest?

Out With The ‘In’
It’s All About The Money?
This year, I’ve seen an increasing amount of fashion and beauty trends catch on, such as super thick brows and stage-heavy contouring. While it may be fun hopping on the bandwagon of the new ‘in’ thing, a lot of people don’t understand that blindly following trends doesn’t work for just anyone.
Growing up in a society where everything revolves around money, we all know how easy it is to lose sight of reality. As a kid, I’ve always been obsessed with materialistic possessions and this habit has been ingrained deep within me throughout my teenage years. Never have I appreciated the things I’m blessed with, even when I got whatever I wanted – I still remember back in primary 5, I scored straight As for my examinations, yet all I did was lament over the fact that I didn’t get a Gameboy from my parents as a reward.

Not everyone has the same body type or facial features, so what works for a Hollywood celebrity may not be flattering on you – you might have to tweak it a little in order for it to suit you. For example, I’ve seen Cara Delevigne-inspired brows overwhelming the faces of a lot of girls and honestly it pains me – not just because I think it’s unflattering, but because they’re so crazily obsessed with the whole ‘eyebrow on fleek’ movement. It’s insane. I hope that 2017 will have the youth being less impressionable, instead of always being enslaved to celebrity influences just to be seen as ‘cool’.
Even in my twenties, I still find myself driven by consumption and succumbing to greed to fill the void in myself. But as the new year comes along, I’ve started to realise that life is not all about buying the latest gadgets, riding the hottest supercars, or owning the most luxurious villa in town. Granted, having the best of everything looks good and makes us feel good – but once the initial excitement wears off, you’re left feeling empty again and the vicious cycle continues. Ask yourself, is your idea of happiness really worth depleting your bank account and abstaining from all of life’s other pleasures?
On the note of not blindly following trends, I also hope that young people will learn to make life decisions for themselves, instead of choosing what everyone else expects of them. I’m at this stage of life where my friends are graduating and looking for jobs, if not already working. A handful have jobs with high pay and prestige, but they’re so jaded and fatigued because they’re not doing what they enjoy and that makes me really sad. I wish that more people would find the courage to go after what they’re passionate about so that they can be truly happy.
In 2017, all I wish for is to spend a simpler lifestyle and focus on the little moments that matter. Take a step back and you will discover that there are so many experiences to be had and so many lessons to be learned outside of your bubble. Be content with life, not things – that’s when you are truly rich.

Teenage Replay
STEP YOUTH CREW showing us their best moves After an intense round of auditions at the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS), a total of 15 talented groups danced their way to the Finals of Teenage Dance Challenge (TDC) 2016! The stage was set for the ultimate showdown at Bishan Junction 8 on 26 November, where each and every team brought out their A-game in a bid to impress the judges – from the improved dance routines, down to the well-coordinated costumes. As we waited for the results, we got the audience to participate in exciting stage games where they got to walk away with awesome Teenage goodie bags. Former runner-up of our Teenage K-pop Dance Battle 2010, STARREseconds, also made a guest appearance and got the crowd riled up with a killer performance. Guess what? We even took the Mannequin Challenge up a notch by getting everyone there to join in – keep a lookout for it on our YouTube channel!
