Ed's Note Hey everybody, It’s the start of a brand new year! Before you break out fresh stationary to ‘celebrate’ back-toschool season, take some time to think about what you’d like to achieve in the upcoming months ahead. If you’re in the habit of making New Year’s resolutions, we suggest striving towards a healthier you instead of sticking to materialistic goals (p. 66). Prioritising your mental, emotional and physical health will help refuel and push you even further than working hard round-theclock will. Trust me.

The arrival of 2018 marks Teenage’s 30th anniversary and boy do we have exciting plans in store! We’re kickstarting our year with Passport to your Future, our annual after-O’s guide that’ll help you navigate tertiary education effortlessly. Be sure to grab a copy (or 10!) because Teenage is switching things up by releasing only four limited edition issues this year! Be sure to keep a look out for these must-have quarterly copies because they’ll be filled with amazing surprises – only the best for our readers. To satisfy your Teenage withdrawals in-between issues, remember to hit us up online! Whether it’s on our website at www.teenage.com.sg, our YouTube channel (@TeenageMagazine) or our socials (@TheOfficialTeenageMagazine on Facebook and @TeenageMagazine on IG), we’re ramping it up with even more of the latest updates and exclusive content. Let’s continue the conversation online – it’s a date!

With that being said, it’s a bittersweet moment for me because this issue with Teenage will be my last. Being a writer, then editor of such an iconic magazine has truly been an honour. You guys have been a constant source of inspiration, thank you for all your love and support! I’ll leave you in the good hands of Hui Ling, who will continue the amazing legacy of Teenage. Here’s to even better times ahead! The next 365 days are filled with opportunities to learn endlessly, explore widely, and make awesome memories. As usual, Teenage will be with you every step of the way. See you around! Love always,

From the blooming fruit tea craze to the recent froyo takeover, start the year on a sweet note with these new “It” treats. BY CHEW HUI LING

TOKYO MILK CHEESE FACTORY Raffles City Shopping Centre #B1-73, Singapore 179103

There’s no denying the fact that Japan takes their sweets seriously, and Tokyo Milk Cheese Factory is no exception. Making its debut in Singapore, the twomonth old confectionary shop is an instant hit for its cheesecakes and milk cheese cookies. However, don’t leave without tasting the signature Hokkaido Soft Serve ($4.50) housed in a cheddar-infused waffle cone at an additional $1. Fancy a sugar high? Go all out with the Cow Cow Sundae ($8.50), which comes with a slice of milk cheesecake, a slab of salt and camembert cookie and a fat scoop of ice cream for the ultimate indulgence.

TEAFOLIA 20 Tampines Central 1 #01-29/30, Singapore 529538 There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding the rising fruit tea trend, and Teafolia undoubtedly takes the top spot on our must-sip list. Unlike your usual order of good ol’ milk tea, this homegrown joint serves up a healthier array of beverages made from premium tea leaves and fresh fruits. The Signature Fruit Tea ($5.90) may be the star of the show, but the avid Instagrammer in us would make a beeline for the Dance of the Dragon ($5.80) or Grapefruit Gravity ($5.50), boasting a colourful medley of mashed pulps which makes it a treat for both your eyes and tastebuds.

Super Show

THERE’S NO DOUBT SUPER JUNIOR’S SUPER SHOW WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC CONCERT SERIES IN THE K-POP BOOKS. WITH THE TOUR ALREADY IN ITS SEVENTH INSTALLMENT, WE LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE MOST UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS SINCE 2008. BY CHEW HUI LING

Super Show 1

Flashback to the good ol’ days where Super Junior was 13 during the first ever SS1 in Seoul. Who could ever forget the goosebumps-raising instance when ELFs (official fandom name) went fullon acapella for ‘Marry U’, moving the grown men from kimchi land to tears as they sang and chanted to every note with lightsticks in hand? Just when we thought things couldn’t get more emotional, the members swopped in during the final chorus for a massive singalong. There’s no denying the relationship between Super Junior and their beloved ELFs, but this particular moment proved their bond is stronger than ever.

Super Show 2

Super Junior’s first overseas stop in Hong Kong for SS2 was a bittersweet affair, as it was Kangin’s last public appearance before his activities were suspended following his involvement with an assault case. Yet because of this, all the ELFs in attendence treasured the time they had together

even more. While the other members were up to their usual comical antics, Kangin was seen bowing profusely to the audience and even broke down twice during the concert. We just hope Kangin will truly reflect on his actions and have no more controversies from now on…

Super Show 3

When it comes to cross-dressing, nobody does it better than Lady Hee Hee. Heechul made SS3 in Singapore truly a night to remember when he appeared in a Lady Gaga get-up, complete with the singer’s signature blonde bob. Without missing a beat, our resident diva lipsynced and danced to ‘Poker Face’ which had us half laughing and half in awe. Even Lady Gaga became a fan, who took notice of her K-pop doppleganger and complimented Heechul for the spot-on impersonation

46

(“He looks amazing, look at that hairbow!”). Hey Lady Hee Hee, we think it’s about time to make a comeback!

Super Show 4

Name a more iconic act than Super Junior? SJ Band says hi, and they’re not just any other instrument-wielding band. During the Singapore leg of SS4, the members took to the stage in full cosplay mode – Donghae as

explosive stage performances, more cosplay mayhem and maximum fan service. But what really tugged at our hearts was Eunhyuk’s touching display of brotherhood at the end of the show: “Henry and Zhoumi are not official Super Junior members, but they are official members of Super Junior M. They are important to us and we have spent a long time together. We hope you will have the same feelings as us and cheer for them.” Couldn’t have said it any better, Eunhyuk!

PHOTO: ONE PRODUCTION

Super Show 6

Charlie Chaplin, Leeteuk as Hulk Hogan, Ryeowook as Gollum, Shindong as Britney Spears, Sungmin as Marilyn Monroe etc. – as they performed a hiliarious rendition of ‘Good Friends’ and ‘Pyjama Party’. We couldn’t stop cracking up!

Super Show 5

Third time’s the charm as the boys returned for yet another smashing show in

Every Super Show was amazing in its own right, but SS6 in Seoul was particularly notable as it marked the superband’s 100th concert since its first installment – setting a new record as the first K-pop act to do so. Fun fact: the Super Show series drew a whopping total of 1,350,000 fans up till SS6! Among the #100thSuperShow attendence list were also a couple of famous faces who turned up in support of their friends, including SHINee, Red Velvet, BTOB, AOA and more. And with the upcoming reboot of SS7, Super Junior looks set to take their touring prowess to greater heights.

Singapore, with Super Junior M members Henry and Zhoumi joining in the fun. SS5 delivered everything one could ever expect:

SUPER JUNIOR WILL BE BRINGING SUPER SHOW 7 TO SINGAPORE ON 27 JANUARY 2018 AT THE SINGAPORE INDOOR STADIUM! TICKETS FROM $188, WWW. SPORTSHUBTIX.SG

THE LANGUAGE OF THORNS LEIGH BARDUGO

A twist on the Grimm’s Fairytales, The Language of Thorns features six short stories weaved in with dangerous enchantment in every page. Each tale takes you into a world of lurking evil, where you’ll be welcomed with river spirits, a man-eating prince, and mermaids that can sing a garden to life. Coupled with engaging illustrations peppered throughout the book, you’re in for a wild ride filled with unexpected twists and delicious betrayals.

GENUINE FRAUD E. LOCKHART

Jule Williams doesn’t just wear many hats – she also dons wigs, accents and background stories. In fact, aside from her diabolical smarts, we can’t be too sure who Jule really is. Her new persona is well camouflaged until she befriends Imogen, a millionaire heiress with a secret. The murkiness of each character will only be made certain late in the story, but you can count on an intense friendship, a mysterious disappearance and a bad romance to keep you entertained throughout.

The Commuter

Michael (Liam Neeson) has been taking the same train for the last decade, but his ride home is far from routine this time around. Sitting opposite him is a mysterious stranger, who offers him money in exchange for his help to uncover the identity of a secret passenger on the train before the last stop. As he races against time to solve the puzzle, Michael soon discovers the task is not what it seems – only he can save lives of the passengers onboard, and himself.

S.T.A.G.S M.A. BENNETT

After spending most of her time in school struggling to fit in, Greer was so ready to pack up and head home for a muchneeded vacation… until she receives a cryptic invitation from the most popular boy in school to spend the weekend at his country manor. But Greer soon realises the horrifying series of activities he has in mind for all his guests – hunting, shooting and fishing for the very misfits he invited.

Breathe

Newlywed and passionately in love, Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) had his whole life ahead of him – before he’s struck down by polio at the age of 28. Although the doctors gave him three months to live, his wife Diana (Claire Foy) isn’t quite ready to give up. Spurred by her love and his desire to watch their newborn grow up, Robin pushes the limits for a chance to live on in spite of his diagnosis.

RED PILL BLUES – MAROON 5

Arguably the most well-rounded album Maroon 5 has ever crafted, the band’s acoustic influence and Adam Levine’s signature falsettos continue to shine through their experimental sounds of hip-hop and soft-rock. Bolstered by big-name features such as Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky and Future, there’s no denying that Red Pill Blues is yet another triumph added to their ever-growing list.

1-1=0 (NOTHING WITHOUT YOU) – WANNA ONE

Hot off the success of their explosive debut record, Wanna One wasted no time in following up with their repackaged album. While ‘Energetic’ showcased their powerful choreography, Nothing Without You allows their vocals to take centre stage. Not to mention the poignant music video for ‘Beautiful’, an eight-minute tearjerker where the boys took a shot at acting. Spoiler alert: you’re gonna need tissues!

Downsizing Ever wondered what life would be like as a modern-day Thumbelina? In Downsizing, it’s exactly what the title is about. Due to overpopulation, a group of Norwegian scientists discovers a way to shrink the phenomenon, literally – by ‘downsizing’ humans to five-inches tall as part of a 200-year global transition. As Paul (Matt Damon) and Audrey (Kristen Wiig) get ready to embrace their domestic life, a brand new adventure awaits in their miniature world.

LAUGH NOW, FLY LATER – WIZ KHALIFA

Leave it to Wiz Khalifa to drop not just one, but three epic mixtapes this year. Majority of the tracks in his latest project ride on a mellower beat, but ‘Letterman’ is undoubtedly the highlight of the album with its irresistible pop hooks, catchy rhythm and rapid-fire lyrics. Fans are still eagerly anticipating the drop of his next full album, but we’re sure these EPs are just a hint of what’s to come.

Maze Runner::: The Death Cure

The Shape of Water

Somewhere far away, they call him God – but here, he’s nothing more than just an ‘Asset’ doomed from the moment he was captured, until Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a mute janitor who works at the research facility, comes along. After sneaking into the enclosure, the twosome quickly forms an unlikely friendship over a love for music. But their happiness is short-lived, as the superiors begin plotting to harvest the body of the ‘Asset’. Will Elisa be able to rescue her new friend from a life of suffering?

The first movie saw the Maze Runner ensemble fighting for their lives to leave the monster-ridden maze, but now they’re breaking into another dangerous labyrinth in this much-anticipated sequel. Going against a maze deadlier than the one they escaped from, will Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow Gladers be able to rescue their friends from Ana Paige (Patricia Clarkson) and find the answers they seek?

NEW YEAR

New You Instead of striving for the usual materialistic goals for your New Year’s resolutions, here are 10 other ways to feel more content and satisfied! BY YUEN YI YING

GET LOTS OF SLEEP NIX ANXIETY Worrying about things will cost you, literally. Advertisers and businesses feed off feelings of fear and unworthiness, selling you things you don’t need or charging you for booking things in advance so you don’t miss out. Feeling downcast all the time hampers learning and makes you less productive, and in the long run, it can also cause serious mental and physical health issues that you might need to seek help for. Learn this simple idea: if you can fix the situation, do something about it. If you can’t, don’t worry about it.

Studies have shown that youths need more sleep – at least nine hours – to feel adequately rested. And by that, we mean sleeping at night, and not having power naps when the sun is shining! Sleep has been proven to improve mood, focus and learning, and it also helps you to regulate your appetite so you don’t overeat, which may lead to feelings of self-consciousness. On the other hand, oversleeping can also cause depression, lethargy, headaches, and even more serious illnesses like diabetes and heart disease. If you find yourself feeling tired all the time, it’s best to speak to a doctor to get professional advice.

SEE THE WORLD Learning about different cultures and seeing how people live in other parts of the world is a deeply enriching and characterbuilding experience. You’ll learn to appreciate the things you have and pick up good practices from others, whether it’s punctuality, friendliness or healthy-eating habits. Even if you’re tight on a student’s budget, there are many ways to travel for cheap so it’s best to do it at this point in life when you have little to no heavy responsibilities. The world’s your oyster!

BE GRATEFUL

TREAT YOURSELF You don’t have to splurge on fancy things to make yourself feel cherished. Instead, pamper yourself with a warm bath, an indulgent dessert and lots of ‘me’ time. Most people might not understand why you would get a manicure, hair spa or facial if there’s no special occasion coming up, but doing it just because it makes you feel happy is all the reason you need. You deserve it!

BE WILLING TO OPEN UP Maintaining privacy is okay, as long as you still feel comfortable sharing things with others when you feel you want to. Don’t keep your feelings bottled up when you feel you’ve been treated unfairly, and don’t be afraid to reach out to trusted friends to share your worries. Tell them if you just want a listening ear, or ask them for advice if that’s what you need. Feeling connected to others helps you feel more optimistic, and also lessens the weight on your shoulders.

It’s natural to get hung up on things you don’t have, but most of us tend to take for granted what we already do. Besides keeping a gratitude journal to note down everything good that happens to you, try going a week without complaining or gossiping – and instead share compliments freely, accept them gracefully, and attempt to be more patient when you feel things aren’t going as planned. See every day as a gift, and be excited for all the little pleasant surprises that come to you.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GOOD VIBES Do you walk away from your friends feeling drained, lousy and depressed all the time? Maybe you’re hanging out with the wrong crowd. If your pals stir up too much drama, get you in trouble all the time or make you feel unworthy, these people don’t deserve your time and attention. Make new friends and start being treated kindly, the way you were meant to.

I HOPE YOU LIVE A LIFE YOU’RE PROUD OF. IF YOU FIND THAT YOU’RE NOT, I HOPE YOU HAVE THE STRENGTH TO START ALL OVER AGAIN. - F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, NOVELIST

TAKE A SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS

Your friends can’t all have perfect lives, yet they seem to on social media. People will only show what they want to on their profile pages; just think about how many Instagram and YouTube stars have dropped out of the race because they admitted they felt ingenuine. When you’ve had enough of your friends’ humble brags, travel snaps and flawless selfies, simply put the apps on hiatus and focus on your own real and everfabulous life instead.

Got a knack for languages, singing, or dancing? Honing your talents can make you feel more positive about yourself, not to mention it could even lead to a potential career path down the road. Filling your time with healthy habits also makes you feel more fulfilled, and one can never get tired of doing something you enjoy, right? To make hobby time extra productive, come up with some creative ways to express it that no one has ever seen before!

67

FORGIVE AND FORGET Do you trudge into class every morning fuming over something? Keep in mind that people generally have good intentions, and don’t take offense so easily. When you find yourself getting peeved, go for a walk or sweat out all the emotions with a workout. Or better yet, share your thoughts with the other party instead of racking up negativity.

Have you been hard on yourself lately? Instead of beating yourself up over every little thing, it’s time to lighten up and get those negative feelings out of your system. Let 2018 be the year you start being kinder to yourself and surround yourself with good vibes. Don’t forget you’ve got a sturdy circle of friends who can motivate you when you’re feeling down, so don’t be afraid to approach them if you’re in need of a listening ear. 19 FEB – 20 MAR

You might’ve been struggling with selfdoubt for the past year, but not anymore. In 2018, expect a renewed sense of confidence as you slowly start to step out of your comfort zone and discover your own identity in the process. But don’t just limit your growth to the emotional aspect – put in effort to develop your skills too, whether it’s signing up for extra courses or taking up a side gig to beef up your portfolio.

Happy Birthday Capricorn! Your creative side is going to take the lead this year and bring about tremendous change in your life. As you break away from the usual routine for a fresh start, you will soon encounter new opportunities to realise your potential to the fullest – whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or a budding artist. Tackle the year with tenacity and a strong will to succeed. 2018 is in your favour!

20 JAN – 18 FEB

Work, work, work! Just when you thought you could finally take a break after the holidays, you’re going to be packed with new responsibilities. While it’s great to be ambitious, take caution in spreading yourself too thin and learn to be selective in taking on commitments. It’s better to decline advancement opportunities or leadership positions than to risk producing poor results, isn’t that so?

If your calendar has been looking empty as of late, worry not ‘cause your social life’s about to heat up big time! Although you think of yourself as quite the introvert, loosen up your boundaries a little and head out there to socialise. It’s a great chance for you to expand your network outside of your social circle, and who knows, you might just meet a group of friends with the potential to become lifelong mates!

Bring on the romance! While you’ve had your fair share of dates gone wrong, your love life’s about to get some unexpected sparks from a potential love interest. You might feel wary about entering into a new relationship, but don’t let your past experiences hold you back from making new memories. Take the time to really get to know the other party, and if it doesn’t work out, at least you would’ve gained a friend!

Your shiny new iPhone suffering a deadly smash? Your laptop falling victim to coffee spills? Before you even have the chance to say “oops”, these accidental misfortunes are just the tip of the iceberg. You’re likely to face even more rainy day situations in the coming months that would require you to bust out the piggy bank as a desperate measure. So if your savings are dipping a little low, it might be a sign to cut down on a few luxuries and get a part-time gig to earn extra bucks instead. Of course, you should always stay alert as well!

While you’ve been invested in chasing personal goals and achieving milestones, relationships naturally took a back seat among your list of priorities. Life will only get busier from now on, but that shouldn’t be an excuse to neglect the ones dearest to you. Make an effort to fork out time for your loved ones – ring up your BFF for a long overdue heart-to-heart, organise a gettogether with your clique, take the fam out for a weekend trip.

Uh oh, it seems like trouble’s brewing in your household! Tension is high over a misunderstanding and there’s no escaping the situation. No matter how long you stay holed up in your room or out with friends to avoid the drama, things will only get worse if nobody puts an end to it. With your diplomatic personality, there’s no better person to play the peacekeeper than you. Don’t worry, you’ve got this under control!

Always prone to putting in three-men’s worth of effort but barely accomplishing anything in return? Being a hard worker is great, but if it isn’t producing the results you intended, then it might be a good idea to switch up your working style. Don’t feel disheartened if you have to start over – be open to suggestions to help you improve and give it a second shot. Practice makes perfect!

After being stuck at a crossroad for the past couple of months, you’re finally ready to make that all-important decision about the next phase of your life. Whether you’re pursuing the course you’ve had in mind, landing that coveted internship position, or taking up your first ever job opportunity, take the plunge and seek what you deserve. A new adventure awaits!

22 NOV – 21 DEC

Oh boy, 2018’s going to be another grueling academic year ahead! Swarmed with fresh modules to learn and new project deadlines to meet, your stress levels will inevitably take a toll on your health. While you may be tempted to work through the night, pay attention to your body’s warning signs when it’s time for some R&R. Rest up and recharge so you’ll be raring to take on tomorrow’s challenges!

Hanabi (fireworks) originally used to ward off evil spirits have a long history in Japan and are an integral part of Japanese summer. Every year, hundreds of firework shows are held across the country starting from end July. The firework shows appear as an announcement for the start of the summer.

Fusen is one of the most popular games of the summer festival in Japan. The player will have to fish a balloon by using a string with a hook attached to it. Sounds easy? Nope, as the string is made of paper, it’s easily shredded once it touches the water.

Kingyo (Gold Fish) is another popular game at the summer festival in Japan. It started since the late Edo period and is extremely popular till today. To win, one would have to catch a gold fish using a paper scoop. Challenging yet addictive, you can’t stop playing until you fish one.

Sensu (Japanese Foldable Fan) is an essential accessory during the summer in Japan. Though we live in a mostly air-conditioned environment now, most Japanese still have the habit of keeping a Sensu inside their bags. Sensus are also commonly used as a tool to showcase quotes. Famous people even use autographed Sensus as a gift.

Hana means flower. In Japan, you will get to experience the beauty of different flowers during each season, such as the blooming of Hydrangeas and Sunflowers during summer. The Japanese also tend to believe in the language of flowers such as Sakura for being “spiritual beauty” and “a good education”.

Asagao (Morning Glory) is one of the summer flowers in Japan, but what would remind the Japanese most from Morning Glory would be their childhood. In their elementary school, each student is required to plant a Morning Glory as their life environment studies assignment.
