Ready, Set, School! Nervous about heading back to school? Follow these tips to curb those first-day jitters and get your year off to a great start.
BE PROACTIVE START YOUR MORNING RIGHT Wake up early and kickstart your day with a proper breakfast that will keep you energised for the challenges ahead, before taking a slow stroll to the bus stop or train station. Rushing will only cause unnecessary stress and tension, so take it slow and enjoy the journey!
You might be tempted to skip the awkward first introductions during orientation, but this is the perfect opportunity to get acquainted. Remember, everyone is just as eager to meet new friends so make an effort to learn more about each other.
DISCONNECT TO CONNECT
DRESS FOR THE BEST While confidence comes from within, looking your best will make you feel similarly too! Swap your T-shirt for a crisp blouse and ditch the flip-flops for stylish kicks. There’s no harm in donning a dressier outfit to make a great first impression, but make sure that you’re dressed appropriately and comfortable with what you’re wearing.
Friends blowing up the group chat about their equally nerve-wrecking first day of school? While it’s comforting to know you’re not alone in your distress, such comparisons will inevitably put a damper on your spirits. Don’t let any doubts deter you from making meaningful connections!
DON’T SWEAT IT Between familiarising yourself with the campus and learning the names of your new classmates, the first day can be overwhelming. Don’t dwell on it if you didn’t enjoy the first day – you’ll eventually settle in once you’ve gotten into the routine.

What’s next for you after your secondary school education? To help you get started, we mapped out an overview of the various options you can consider before embarking on your tertiary journey.
Junior College (JC) and Centralised Institute (CI)
Polytechnic
Academic Qualification
GCE ‘A’ Levels
Diploma
Duration of study
Two years (JC) or three years (CI)
Three years
What you need to know
• Similar to the secondary school syllabus, JCs and CIs operate on a timetable schedule where students attend academic lessons on Mathematics, Biology, History etc., along with specialised electives such as Art, Music and Language programmes. • At the end of your studies, students are required to take the GCE ‘A’ Level examination, which will determine your entry into a local university of your choice.
Choose this if…
Pros
• Polytechnics provide students with a strong foundation in practical experience through hands-on coursework and work attachments. • You will also be exposed to plenty of networking opportunities with industry professionals, equipping you with transferable skills that prepare you for the workplace.
• You prefer an accelerated route to university and prefer theory-based learning.
• You seek to develop your passion into a professional career and hope to gain a better insight into your desired industry.
• Offers you a higher chance of getting into a local university.
• Hands-on learning that will give you a competitive edge.
• A longer timeframe to think about your future specialisation.
• Fosters strong teamwork skills as project-based assignments make up most of the curriculum. • Wider selection of skilloriented courses to fit a range of interests.
• Competitive environment and grade-intensive curriculum due to university entry qualifications after GCE ‘A’ Levels.
Cons
• Lack of practical industry experience should you decide to enter the workforce directly after GCE ‘A’ Levels.
• Requires consistent effort to maintain a high GPA score throughout all three years of study. • Need for self-discipline as students are given more autonomy when it comes to assignments, coursework and projects.
07
National ITE Certificate (NITEC) or Higher National ITE Certificate (Higher NITEC) Two to three years • With a strong emphasis on technical and vocational skills, ITEs offer on-the-job exposure to students in preparation for further studies or the workforce. • You are allowed to choose between a full-time course or a part-time traineeship programme, which will help you advance into your career or higher education.

Varies
Varies
Varies
• Specialised institutions focus on niche programmes that allow you to explore your topic of interest in depth, which will give you an advantage to excel in the industry. • Compared to those who opt for the more general courses, students hailing from specialised institutions are better equipped to enter the workforce.
• Private institutions enable students to obtain international qualifications in your home country without the hefty costs incurred when living overseas. • There’s also the option of fast-track programmes that speed up the academic process, allowing you to graduate ahead of your peers. Part-time courses are available for those who require more flexibility as well.
• Overseas education gives students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a foreign education system, where you get to become fully independent and gain a new cultural perspective. • Studying abroad can also open up doors to a slew of foreign employment opportunities should you decide to stay on after graduation.
• You aim to cultivate relevant technical skills in an engaging environment and hope to make full use of apprenticeship opportunities with industry partners.
• You are clear on the career path that you would like to embark on and are committed to obtaining specialised and relevant skills for that industry.
• You want to secure an international certification without having to study abroad and enter the workforce as quickly as possible.
• You would like to acquire your international qualifications while experiencing student life abroad.
• Practical learning that places less emphasis on theoretical lessons.
• Opportunities to develop expertise in a specialised field of interest.
• Flexibility in enrollment due to multiple intakes per year.
• Independent living which encourages aptitude and personal growth.
• Skills gained through ITE are sought after by employers. • Ability to apply skills to working environment upon graduation.
• Better internship and job placement assistance that might lead to direct employment. • Well developed facilities to accommodate your needs.
• Takes a longer period of time to obtain diploma or degree compared to those who entered junior colleges or polytechnics.
• Narrower job prospects due to niche skills and knowledge. • Difficulty in switching professions if you choose to opt for a transfer mid-studies. • Possibility of incurring extra costs due to equipment or materials that are required during your studies.
• Affordable alternative for attaining international qualifications without going abroad. • Shorter duration of study, allowing you to graduate faster and enter the working world sooner.
• Immerse in new cultures and form meaningful connections with people from all over the globe. • Valuable experiences abroad that will help to increase your career prospects.
• Limited exposure to overseas markets despite getting an international qualification.
• High cost of living that requires student to allocate their budget well.
• Lesser breaks and free time due to a highly structured schedule compressed into an accelerated timeline.
• Requires good self-discipline when managing work and play without supervision.

Open House MANUAL
Planning to join in the Polytechnic Open House festivities from 4 to 6 January 2018? Here’s everything you need to know before going down.
OH Checklist ARM YOURSELF WITH A GAME PLAN TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR TIME AT THE OPEN HOUSES, STARTING WITH THESE EASY PREPARATION TIPS!
Do your research
on
It’s nearly impossible to get your enquiries answered on every single course available at the different polytechnics. Make a list of the courses you take greater interest in by reading up on them on the respective websites, and prioritise them accordingly. By selecting your top choices of which courses you might apply for, you’ll have a better idea of which faculty to head to during the Open House and what you would like to clarify with the course advisers.
Get valuable advice
on
Don’t rush into a decision without a second opinion! Speak to the ones who know your academic journey best thus far – be it your parents, secondary school teachers or seniors – to get their opinions and suggestions on your next step. The final decision ultimately lies with you, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt to get additional input to help make a more informed choice.
Plan your schedule
on
If you’re intending on visiting all the polytechnics, don’t be overly ambitious and aim to finish everything within a day. If you prefer an in-depth experience at each institution, plan your travel schedule ahead of time to ensure a smoother journey. Calculate the time and distance between the various campuses, and give yourself adequate buffer time to fully immerse yourself into each experience. There are multiple days to visit so there’s no need to rush through it!
Be practical
on
While doing your research for which course to pursue, be mindful of your qualifications as well. Take into account your scores when finding out more about a specific course to see if you would be suitable to enrol in it. There’s no harm in probing further at the Open House if you’re a couple of points shy, but if the disparity is significant, be strategic and focus on what’s achievable instead.
Seek companions
on
It’s understandable if you’re afraid of feeling lost when heading down to the Open Houses alone. Going with your parents could allow you better guidance, or gather a few friends who are also interested in visiting the Open Houses to discover courses together. Who knows, you might end up being coursemates with your BFFs for your polytechnic life!
Be An Early Bird
To avoid the swarming crowd at the Open House, it’s best to reach early to maximise your experience. By starting your day off just as the event starts, you’ll be able to get priority of having your queries answered, as well as first dibs on the attractive goodie bags that might get snapped up quickly!
09
Time To Conquer YOU’VE FINALLY MADE IT TO THE OPEN HOUSE AND YOU’RE ALL SET TO EXPLORE! BUT WHAT’S NEXT?
Collect your information
As you make your way around the campus while browsing through the various booths, you’re likely to receive a load of brochures, pamphlets and handouts. Rather than dumping them away as if they were just another flyer, keep all the documents for your reference. With all the information within your grasp, make sure to sit down with a clear head after the Open House madness to go through all the materials gathered to help you decide your next course of action.
Ask Away
You’re bound to have countless questions about your potential tertiary future circling in your head. Don’t be afraid to voice them out to the course counsellors, lecturers and facilitating students present for a better idea of what you’re in for – everyone’s there to help! No question would be deemed as a bad one, as your concerns of a polytechnic life are the main reason for attending an Open House in the first place.
Confidence Is Key
Polytechnic will be where you truly blossom from an adolescent into a young adult, and taking charge of your growth is important. Set out for the Open House determined to get all your questions answered and don’t be reluctant to partake in any interactive activities. But it’s not all about fun and games either – try to sit down with the professionals at the various seminars and workshops to gain a better insight of polytechnic life, where you can also get more tips on making that all-important tertiary education choice.
Get Involved
With a plethora of activities happening at every corner, you’re practically spoilt for choice of what to indulge in. From CCA showcases to music performances, rest assured there won’t be a dull moment during your Open House visits. Pay extra attention to the CCA booths too – picking a school with a CCA of your preference could be the life-changing factor that affects your polytechnic selection. Check out p. 14 for some of the interesting CCAs you'd get to discover!
Explore Your Surroundings
Don’t panic if you lose your sense of direction upon setting foot into a new campus. All polytechnics host a countless amount of facilities, so take your time to get accustomed with your surroundings. Designated guided tours will also be available for you to learn more about the different areas of the campus. Before you know it, you’ll be returning as a full-time student and venturing around like a seasoned pro!

With a total of six food courts scattered across the school compound, FC3 is situated at the heart of the campus and arguably the most crowded – for good reason. The Chicken Rice stall is constantly sporting queues for their fragrant rice and boneless chicken combo, but the studentfriendly affordability of $2.80 is undoubtedly the winning factor.
Over at the hilltop canteen, grab a donut or two at the vegetarian stall on your way to class – whether you’re craving for bite-sized balls coated in icing sugar as a mid-lecture munchie, Must or fancy an all-out Try! sugar rush with rainbowsprinkled chocolate rings.
MEE GORENG
$2.30 @ NORTH CANTEEN
Well-known for its Indian food, the Mee Goreng served here is an obvious highlight. Unlike the dry versions you get elsewhere, this fry-up dish is doused in fiery-red gravy to give you a seriously spicy kick. Shiok or what?

Find what’s best for your interests
The Big
Decision Deciding on the next step of your tertiary education can be tough. Here are some important factors to consider before making a choice.
While polytechnics and junior colleges might be an obvious choice on your list, don’t rule out private institutions either; it is important to find out which institution has a stronger academic foothold on your desired field of study. Take Kaplan Singapore for example, which has established itself as the Best Private Education across the specialisations in Accountancy, Business Management, Law, Marketing and Psychology*, so it’s safe to say you’ll be in good hands.
Figure out the environment you thrive in
Are you the type who enjoys being involved in small group discussions, or do you prefer learning within a traditional lecture setting? Understanding how you absorb information and the kind of classroom environment that best suits your learning style will help to maximise your productivity, so be sure to go on faculty tours to get a better sense of what it’s like to study in your preferred tertiary institution.
Determine your level of commitment
Besides your academic goals, do consider other commitments such as work, family and personal aspirations. A full-time programme is recommended for those who want a more in-depth learning experience, while others who prefer studying at their own pace may opt for a more flexible parttime programme.
If you’re looking to join the workforce ahead of your peers, there are also programmes at Kaplan that allow you to complete a diploma in as fast as eight months.
Look into scholarships and financial aid
If you're worried about hefty course fees, don’t forget the educational loans, financial assistance schemes and other support services that can help to fund your education. For students with an outstanding academic record, you may also take advantage of the scholarship opportunities available.
Explore the career opportunities available
If you already have a career path in mind, consider enroling in a programme that boasts excellent job placement statistics and offers internship opportunities for you to gain real-world experience. Internships are a great opportunity to not only boost your resume, but also establish connections with professionals and gain a headstart into your desired industry.

Glow Up
Power through the first day of school looking fresh-faced and totally fabulous with these easy beauty tricks.
1
Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof Eyebrow Pencil, $42
Having the right brow shape does wonders to one’s overall appearance. Start by tweezing any stray hairs that are out of place, then filling in your brows with an eyebrow pencil one shade lighter than your natural hair colour.
2
Sephora Blush To Go, $19
To cheat an all-natural look, adding a hint of colour to your cheeks will do the trick. Sweep on a soft coral shade to the apples and blend it out with your fingertips for a flirty flush.
3
essence Super Precise Eyeliner, $4.90
If a traditional cat eye looks too harsh for school, why not try a subtle take on the winged liner look? Trace a fine line along the upper lashes and create a sleek flick at the corner of the eye. Messed up? Simply go in with q-tip dipped in makeup remover to clean up smudges around the area, and voila!
4
Muse & Co Everyday Eyelashes, $2.95
If clumpy mascara is not your thing, swap it out for a pair of falsies instead. These faux ones look super natural and won’t melt under the heat, all while giving your lashes instant volume.
5
Catrice Liquid Camouflage, $5.90
Skip the foundation if you only have minimal trouble spots on your face. All you need is a small amount of concealer to cover any areas of concern such as blemishes, sun spots or dark circles – and you’re good to go!
6
3CE Bebe Color Lip Balm, $25
For the perfect everyday lip, we recommend a sheer lip balm that delivers a pop of colour while keeping your pucker hydrated all day long. If you want to rock a bolder look for after school, layer the colour for a more vibrant tint and blot it to set the application.
7
ETUDE HOUSE Any Cushion All Day Perfect SPF50+ / PA+++, $32
Rather than caking on a full face of foundation that looks overdone, opt for a lightweight yet long-lasting formula that will give you flawless coverage throughout the day. Cushion compacts are great because they’re so handy – just toss it in your bag and whip it out for touchups on-the-go!

TO THE
Class of 2018 Your tertiary years pass by in a flash, so make the most of your experience. Ahead, we asked graduates to share their biggest regrets and best advice. Take notes, freshies!
“In Junior College, I decided to join choir for my CCA which was the same thing I did back in secondary school. However, I wish I had the courage to act outside of my comfort zone. I’ve always wanted to try something new, like rock climbing!" Cass, 20
Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone
You might have been stuck in the same CCA for years, but you’re entering a new chapter of your life – take it as an opportunity to reinvent yourself. Don’t box yourself within the walls of familiarity and try dabbling in something new for a change. Who knows, you might just discover a newfound interest you didn’t know existed!
Be Confident
“Why are they staring at me? Do I look weird today?” – such thoughts would inevitably run through your head when you’re in a new environment with people you don’t know. But at the end of the day, no one really takes notice of these little quirks as much as you think. In fact, they might just love you more for it!
“I regret being so selfconscious. I always felt like someone was watching me so my actions were always very stiff, but in reality... no one really cares. I was just overly suspicious!” Janisha, 19
“Apart from CCAs, there are also a ton of opportunities to expand your leadership skills which I didn't take up. I regret not being more immersed in school life.” Khairul, 21
Seize The Opportunities
There’s more to school than just academics – there are also plenty of extracurricular clubs and after-school activities to keep you engaged! Not only are they platforms for you to widen your social circle outside of class, it’s also a chance for you to pick up extra skills and even prepare you for the workforce.
Love Can Wait “Although English was the second language in my international school, I’ve always enjoyed reading English books and took pride in speaking it fluently. When the other students made fun of me for being pretentious, I ended up hiding the books and using English only with people who spoke it first. I wish I wasn’t so quick to conform to what my schoolmates thought of me." Wei Lun, 20
Live For Yourself
Never let anyone’s opinion sway your beliefs, whether it’s giving in to parental pressures or trying to fit in with others. If you’re truly passionate about something, trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to pursue what your heart desires.
We’ve all been there – unrequited crushes, first loves and heartbreaks. When the hormones start to kick in, you may be at the stage where the idea of getting into a relationship is intriguing – but it can also result in unnecessary drama and heartache, so tread cautiously with matters of the heart.
“I wish I didn’t have so many of those so-called relationships. Looking back, we were all too young and I feel like they weren’t even real boyfriends. I wasted time crying, fighting and healing when I could’ve spent it with friends or being more involved in school.” Rebecca, 23

Friends Forever?
While school is a place where you make lifelong friends, there are instances where friends can get rather competitive on the academic front. Just because you are grouped together for projects doesn’t mean you are obliged to stick with the same clique – you're better off finding a new group of friends whom you can better connect with. More tips on p. 32!
“My clique got along well until we had to do our projects together. It wasn’t anybody’s fault; some of us just worked on different wavelengths – but it reached a point where there were tears and yelling before I left. I’m sure my old clique is as happy as I am now after the ‘break up’, but if we had the courage to stop forcing our friendship, we might still be on cordial terms now.” Ke Xin, 22
No Time For Crime
“Although I had good grades in year 1, it ended up making me complacent. I didn’t put in as much effort from year 2 onwards and I was spending way too much time with my girlfriend.” Marcus, 23
Don’t Slack Off
You may think that only scoring well during the first year is enough and the remaining two years of your education won’t affect your GPA as much, but keep in mind that the cumulative grading system is based on your overall performance throughout the years. Keep up the good work and you’ll be duly rewarded!
From skipping lectures to altering your uniform in every way imaginable, some of you are probably guilty of these. You might think that breaking the rules is cool now, but you’ll soon realise that it’s just a phase. Treat it as a learning lesson and move on!
“I wish I’d have just worn a skirt that wasn’t too short and proper socks. Once, I literally ran away from the disciplinary mistress because I didn’t want to buy a pair of school socks, but she caught me anyway. Being the school’s resident troublemaker was an exhausting streak to keep up, I felt like I had just wasted my time!” Daphne, 19
“I didn’t show up for a lot of the events and classes that I signed up for because none of my friends would go with me. I always felt that I won't be comfortable alone so I'd choose not to socialise or participate in the activity, which defeated the purpose so there wasn't a point in going. Looking back, I realised I missed out on a lot just because I was afraid of being alone.” Joey, 20
It’s Okay To Be Alone
It’s nice to have companionship when going for camps or trying out for a new CCA, but chances are you won’t always find someone with similar interests as you. Don’t shy away from signing up for activities on your own – new friends will come along naturally. Being independent is a good thing!

Clique OR CLICK?
Trying to fit in as the new kid in school? Here are some tips on how to foster long-lasting, meaningful relationships on campus.
THE SMARTIES HOW TO SPOT THEM:
For starters, they can always be seen with a book in hand – whether it’s between classes, at the library, or even during meal times.
WHY THEY MAKE GOOD BUDDIES:
Hanging around smart people will boost your knowledge and motivate you to learn more yourself. HOW TO BE THEIR FRIEND:
Ask them questions about what they’re reading or currently into, and they’ll be more than happy to share. Friendship is a two-way street, so be sure to tell them about interesting news you’ve come across as well! Smart people are always open to knowing more people, especially if their new friends seem keen to engage in elevated, well-informed conversations.
THE FREE SPIRITs
HOW TO BE THEIR FRIEND:
Seek recommendations and share your own, but be mindful not to come across as overly clingy. They want to know that you’re fun to hang out with, so socialise widely with everyone and never gossip so they know they can trust you.
HOW TO SPOT THEM:
They’re the ones on Snapchat, YouTube and Instagram living life to the fullest. You can usually find the whole gang at the hottest gigs, the newest eateries or the coolest hangouts. WHY THEY MAKE GOOD BUDDIES:
Fun and easygoing, you can always count on them to know the latest hip spots and where to go for good food, shopping and more.
THE QUIET HOW TO SPOT THEM:
Although they may seem shy and soft-spoken, this group has very good thoughts and ideas – they just may not be comfortable sharing them before they feel ready.
WHY THEY MAKE GOOD BUDDIES:
A humble and unpretentious bunch, they make it a point to give others a chance to voice their opinions and value what you say. HOW TO BE THEIR FRIEND:
Be patient and not pushy. Give them lots of space, and make sure conversations aren’t one-way by offering them plenty of opportunities to speak up. If they seem uncomfortable, don’t prod them too much for answers. It will take them some time to warm up to you, but if they sense that you are genuine and trustworthy, they will eventually confide in you.
TEXT YUEN YI YING PHOTO ISTOCK
Making new friends can be ner ve-wrecking, but you never know who comes along unless you put yourself out there and socialise. You'll be part of your very own squad in no time!
HOW TO BE THEIR FRIEND:
THE ACTIVE HOW TO SPOT THEM:
They are the ones who willingly sign up for fitness classes and make use of lunch hours to happily chat away about last night’s soccer match or rugby game. WHY THEY MAKE GOOD BUDDIES:
Besides making good exercise partners and motivating you to work out, they can teach you a lot about how to use your body correctly and efficiently too. HOW TO BE THEIR FRIEND:
Even if you’re not a super fitness fanatic, making friends with them is easy, especially if they are involved in a team sport. It’s hard to find people to play with, so if you’re keen to join, you’ll be warmly welcomed into the ranks. Show genuine interests in things they like, and ask them to coach you as well if you feel inclined.
WHY THEY MAKE GOOD BUDDIES:
They raise your awareness about issues of discussion and encourage you to make a stand about the things you care about. HOW TO BE THEIR FRIEND:
You don’t have to be passionate about the same things to be their friend, neither do you have to agree with all their views. Just be supportive and not antagonistic. In the case where they might be wrong, disagree without a hint of self-righteousness and offer to look things up together.
THE ARTISTS HOW TO SPOT THEM:
THE EMPOWERED HOW TO SPOT THEM:
These people have a passionate cause and aren’t afraid to speak out about it, whether it’s advocating for gender equality, animal rights or even a vegan lifestyle.
Show interest in their works and ask about their inspirations. If their afterhours activities are causing them to struggle in class, offer to help them out with school work. Because everyone works hard at their craft, don’t diss their rivals even if your friends do. Instead, help them improve their own skills and encourage them to help others who may be interested in the same things too.
When they’re not occupied with classes, they can be found practising for an upcoming dance performance, theatre piece or music gig. Either that, or they’ll be busy getting crafty – doodling, painting or creating forms of art. WHY THEY MAKE GOOD BUDDIES:
They encourage you to develop an artistic streak, even if you think you’re not creative to begin with.
THE CARING HOW TO SPOT THEM:
With their amiable and kind-hearted personality, they’re often the ones people turn to for advice and offer you a listening ear when you’re down.
WHY THEY MAKE GOOD BUDDIES:
They will always be there for you throughout the highs and lows in life. These are the people whom you should keep close to you. HOW TO BE THEIR FRIEND:
Be appreciative of their support and loving friendship through words and deeds. They’re human just like you, so they’ll definitely have their fair share of rough patches in life to go through. Don’t be a fair-weather friend who’s only around for the good times – learn from them and be there for them for a change.
