When I first came across slime videos on Instagram, I didn’t understand the fun of playing with these putty-like, crunchy-sounding blobs, until I got my hands on some. Bright Beginnings
Yet to figure out where your passion lies? Be inspired by these Singapore Polytechnic (SP) students who have found their true calling via the Early Admissions Exercise (EAE).
Tay Zhi Zhong (third from the left) from the Diploma in Applied Drama and Psychology (DADP) with his coursemates at the Freshman Orientation Programme. Zhi Zhong is one of 13 students who entered DADP via EAE.
With an avid interest in acting since secondary school, Zhi Zhong was determined to pursue his passion and put it to good use. The opportunity came when the Jurongville alumni learnt of SP’s Diploma in Applied Drama and Psychology (DADP) through his seniors. After researching more about the course and finding out that he was eligible for EAE, Zhi Zhong became certain that DADP was his diploma of choice. Initially skeptical about his odds of being accepted due to the strong competition, Zhi Zhong received encouragement from his teachers and peers, and thus persevered. As part of the EAE assessment requirement, the budding actor produced a one-minute selfintroduction video and was then shortlisted for an interview. His efforts paid off. Now, Zhi Zhong is a proud student at DADP! Zhi Zhong’s EAE application tip: “The process will seem intimidating and cumbersome at first, but everything will definitely be worth it in the end when you receive your letter of acceptance! Besides, you will never know if you never try, so just go for it! ”

Being a foodie since young, Pei Xuan has always been fascinated at the wide array of products filling the supermarket aisles, often wondering about the origins and science behind food manufacturing. Thus, when she discovered the Diploma in Food Science and Technology (DFST), she decided that it was the course for her and went straight for EAE. After ample research about the course demands and future job Teo Pei Xuan prospects, Pei Xuan came adequately (second from the left, prepared for the written essay standing) and test and subsequently aced her her Diploma interview. The entire EAE application in Food was a breeze – it was straightforward Science and and the instructions for submitting Technology of documents were clear, which (DFST) coursemates! made the process a lot smoother. Pei Xuan is And look how far it has brought her! one of the 11 students who entered DFST via EAE.

Marc’s EAE application tip: “If you have a definite course in mind, apply for EAE and show the interviewers your interest and aptitude, as well as the reason they should choose you over the other candidates!”

Marc’s exposure to Aeronautics was at six years old when he attended his first ever RSAF Airshow. Since then, the St Patrick’s alumnus knew that he wanted to be an aerospace engineer. When he visited SP’s Parents’ Forum while studying for his O-Levels, he already had his sights set on the Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering (DARE) and spared no hesitation in applying for the course through EAE. It was nerve-wrecking, to say the least – but Marc saw it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, making sure to build on his knowledge about SP and the course he was applying for. Despite being wellprepared for the test and interview, he couldn’t help but fret about the results throughout the two-month waiting period. Thankfully, all his worries were put to rest when he received his letter of acceptance, and the rest is history.

What was your dream job growing up? For many, professions like teachers, lawyers and doctors might be seen as lucrative careers, but there’s also a handful of aspiring entrepreneurs who are taking the leap of faith into F&B. Along with older brother Jack and twin sister Anna, Faye Sai represents the boom of third-generation ‘hawkerpreneurs’ brewing up a storm in the local kopitiam scene. “I’ve always seen myself as a hawker,” says the 29-year-old, who gave up a degree to take over the Sai family’s 82-year coffee shop heritage. With a humble coffee sock in hand, Faye serves up authentic kopi brews and artisanal toasts with her own innovative twists – creating modern flavours inspired by their travels. Ahead, the feisty university graduate dishes on taking the plunge into hawker life and how she’s keeping the tradition alive. What led you to becoming interested in coffee? I started helping my dad when I was 19. It didn’t take me long to realise that I enjoyed the craft and wanted to pursue it as a career. At that point, he was against it and urged me to get a degree and gain work experience. And since I decided that I’m eventually going to take over the business, why not learn a different side of coffee? Thus, I worked parttime at a cafe and also volunteered for the World Barista Championship to learn more about the specialty coffee scene. Taking that knowledge with me, I was able to innovate our offerings by coming up with interesting flavours like sea salt caramel and pumpkin spice mocha.

whether the coffee we make will match up to our dad’s. Of course, he’s still around to help us grind the beans and blend our coffee – which is why you wouldn’t be able to find the same taste anywhere else. But we take a lot of pride in our quality and make sure people enjoy their experience here.

What’s your role in the business? My dad’s still involved in the back-end stuff, but the three of us play according to our strengths. I deal with the marketing aspect as I majored in it – and that was something I chose because I knew it would come in handy. Jack has an impeccable taste palate hence he’s in charge of research and development, while Anna manages the dayto-day operations. What are your thoughts on the current crop of young hawkerpreneurs? It’s a competitive scene as there are always young hawkers popping up, but it’s also heartening to know that people of our generation don’t mind the hard work and dare to go out of their comfort zone. The rent may
be high, hours long and labour hard to find, but it’s enjoyable as you get to interact directly with customers. What’s your stand between taking a stable job and pursuing a career you’re passionate about? Because of the education we’re entitled to and the way our society has evolved, people no longer view money as a priority in today’s generation. There’s always a trade-off – for us, we chose to give up a high salary for a career that satisfies. There’s no right or wrong; ultimately it all boils down to what suits you best.
Have you ever thought of how life would be like if you took a different route? Sometimes when it gets overly draining, you tend to question yourself whether you’ve made the right choice. I could’ve gotten a comfortable job with a steady paycheck, but I’m glad I took this path as it gives me a lot of opportunities to learn more about myself. Back then, I took a diploma that wasn’t a great fit so I switched over to business management in university which I genuinely enjoyed and am now able to apply back to the business. I can’t say everything fell smoothly into place for me, but I’m lucky in a way because it allowed me to try different things and figure out what works for myself. Any word of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? Be open to trying new things and don’t be afraid of failure. At the same time, always have a backup plan so you can have a safety net to fall back on. What are your plans for the future? Within the next few years, we will be focusing our efforts on stablising our current three outlets. We also plan on venturing into online retail sometime next year so customers abroad will be able to purchase our products easily.
How did the people around you react to you becoming a hawker? I usually face mixed reactions, but that was in the beginning when nobody really saw being a hawker as a viable career. My friends have always been supportive, Coffee Break is but my mother is still located at Amoy Street very apprehensive about Food Centre, Buona Vista it.
