Ed's Note Hey everyone, Another year, another summer – can you believe it’s already June?

For those of you going on school

break, it’s even more important that you make this month-long holiday the best one yet, because time

really flies when you’re having fun (I would know). To help you make the most of June, we’ve put together the ultimate

hit-list; from icy treats to beat

the heat (p. 12), crazy unicorn

beauty trends to try (p. 24), to a comprehensive guide of where to go and what to do. We even recommend addictive apps to download – there won’t be a spare minute of boredom for sure. With that being said, use your

holiday wisely. Whether it’s scoring

a part-time job (p. 67) or catching up on all the entertainment

you’ve been missing (from p.43),

you’ll definitely be kept busy.

Thus, remember to allocate time to

rest, rejuvenate and recharge. After all, that’s what school breaks are for. Till the next issue,

LOVING THIS MONTH: Slime!

When I first came across slime videos on Instagram, I didn’t understand the fun of playing with these putty-like, crunchy-sounding blobs, until I got my hands on some. There’s just something strangely appealing and therapeutic about playing with (and making) them – it’s an audio-sensory experience from the first squish. But as I’ve realised, you either hate it or love it, and I’m definitely a fan.

Love,

Johanna 5

Kanemochi Bugis+ #02-50, Singapore 188067

Not only is Kanemochi Halal-certified, it’s also gluten-free which makes it perfect for vegans!

What’s better than mochi and ice cream? Mochi ice cream! Enter Kanemochi, the Bangkok-based establishment well-loved for its bite-sized array of soft, pillowy mochi loaded with your favourite ice cream flavours – from the classic Mint Chip and Korean Banana Milk ($2.30), to the premium Cookies & Cream and Thai Iced Tea ($2.60). It’s good enough on its own but you can also choose to complete your mochi with one of the dessert sets, whether you prefer it served with Belgium waffles ($9.80) or fancy an extra dose of fondue goodness ($10.80). Our favourite combo: the Waffles Fondue Set ($18.80) because why not have the best of both worlds?

Patbingsoo Korean Dining House Plaza Singapura #B2-47, Singapore 238839 While there’s no lack of Korean dessert houses in Singapore, Patbingsoo Korean Dining House is hard to beat when it comes to the variety of bingsoo (shaved ice) options available. Look forward to a delicious assortment of innovative flavours such as the Sinsa Patbingsoo ($14.90), served in half a rockmelon and accompanied with a delightful medley of red beans, nata de coco and corn flakes; and the ultimate show-stopper of the Bibim Patbingsoo ($11.90), a sweet take on the traditional dish topped with a sunny side-up cleverly replicated with a peach for the yolk and vanilla ice cream for the white. Aside from bingsoo, it also offers a wide selection of savoury items such as the signature Rolling Cheese Pork Ribs ($38.90) featuring juicy pork ribs coated in grilled cheddar and mozzarella cheese. Mashiseoyo!

Named after the metro stations in Seoul, these bingsoo creations take you on a gastronomic journey from Myeongdong to Dongdaemun, Gangnam to Itaewon. Even the exterior is constructed to echo the train concept!

Bright Beginnings

Yet to figure out where your passion lies? Be inspired by these Singapore Polytechnic (SP) students who have found their true calling via the Early Admissions Exercise (EAE).

Tay Zhi Zhong (third from the left) from the Diploma in Applied Drama and Psychology (DADP) with his coursemates at the Freshman Orientation Programme. Zhi Zhong is one of 13 students who entered DADP via EAE.

With an avid interest in acting since secondary school, Zhi Zhong was determined to pursue his passion and put it to good use. The opportunity came when the Jurongville alumni learnt of SP’s Diploma in Applied Drama and Psychology (DADP) through his seniors. After researching more about the course and finding out that he was eligible for EAE, Zhi Zhong became certain that DADP was his diploma of choice. Initially skeptical about his odds of being accepted due to the strong competition, Zhi Zhong received encouragement from his teachers and peers, and thus persevered. As part of the EAE assessment requirement, the budding actor produced a one-minute selfintroduction video and was then shortlisted for an interview. His efforts paid off. Now, Zhi Zhong is a proud student at DADP! Zhi Zhong’s EAE application tip: “The process will seem intimidating and cumbersome at first, but everything will definitely be worth it in the end when you receive your letter of acceptance! Besides, you will never know if you never try, so just go for it! ”

Being a foodie since young, Pei Xuan has always been fascinated at the wide array of products filling the supermarket aisles, often wondering about the origins and science behind food manufacturing. Thus, when she discovered the Diploma in Food Science and Technology (DFST), she decided that it was the course for her and went straight for EAE. After ample research about the course demands and future job Teo Pei Xuan prospects, Pei Xuan came adequately (second from the left, prepared for the written essay standing) and test and subsequently aced her her Diploma interview. The entire EAE application in Food was a breeze – it was straightforward Science and and the instructions for submitting Technology of documents were clear, which (DFST) coursemates! made the process a lot smoother. Pei Xuan is And look how far it has brought her! one of the 11 students who entered DFST via EAE.

Marc Wong from the Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering (DARE) at SP’s Aerohub. Marc is one of the 13 students who entered DARE via EAE.

Marc’s EAE application tip: “If you have a definite course in mind, apply for EAE and show the interviewers your interest and aptitude, as well as the reason they should choose you over the other candidates!”

Pei Xuan’s EAE application tip: “Be sure to rank your choices after thinking through it thoroughly as it may affect your chances. Note that there will be two rounds of selection as well!”

Marc’s exposure to Aeronautics was at six years old when he attended his first ever RSAF Airshow. Since then, the St Patrick’s alumnus knew that he wanted to be an aerospace engineer. When he visited SP’s Parents’ Forum while studying for his O-Levels, he already had his sights set on the Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering (DARE) and spared no hesitation in applying for the course through EAE. It was nerve-wrecking, to say the least – but Marc saw it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, making sure to build on his knowledge about SP and the course he was applying for. Despite being wellprepared for the test and interview, he couldn’t help but fret about the results throughout the two-month waiting period. Thankfully, all his worries were put to rest when he received his letter of acceptance, and the rest is history.

EAE, formerly known as Direct Polytechnic Admissions (DPA), is an admissions exercise for students to apply and receive conditional offers for admission into polytechnic based on their aptitudes and interests, even before they sit for their O-Level exams! EAE in a nutshell

EAE applications open 22 June 2017. Selection and assessment for EAE will be based on submission of portfolios, interviews and aptitude tests, where relevant and appropriate. What was your dream job growing up? For many, professions like teachers, lawyers and doctors might be seen as lucrative careers, but there’s also a handful of aspiring entrepreneurs who are taking the leap of faith into F&B. Along with older brother Jack and twin sister Anna, Faye Sai represents the boom of third-generation ‘hawkerpreneurs’ brewing up a storm in the local kopitiam scene. “I’ve always seen myself as a hawker,” says the 29-year-old, who gave up a degree to take over the Sai family’s 82-year coffee shop heritage. With a humble coffee sock in hand, Faye serves up authentic kopi brews and artisanal toasts with her own innovative twists – creating modern flavours inspired by their travels. Ahead, the feisty university graduate dishes on taking the plunge into hawker life and how she’s keeping the tradition alive. What led you to becoming interested in coffee? I started helping my dad when I was 19. It didn’t take me long to realise that I enjoyed the craft and wanted to pursue it as a career. At that point, he was against it and urged me to get a degree and gain work experience. And since I decided that I’m eventually going to take over the business, why not learn a different side of coffee? Thus, I worked parttime at a cafe and also volunteered for the World Barista Championship to learn more about the specialty coffee scene. Taking that knowledge with me, I was able to innovate our offerings by coming up with interesting flavours like sea salt caramel and pumpkin spice mocha.

Kopi

From a part-time barista to a full-time kopi hawker, Faye Sai is one-third of the millennial sibling trio behind Coffee Break. We speak to the 29-year-old lady boss on taking the road less travelled and beyond.

Do you face any pressure continuing the legacy of your family business? Definitely. It was an obstacle to get regulars for ourselves because there’s always the expectation

whether the coffee we make will match up to our dad’s. Of course, he’s still around to help us grind the beans and blend our coffee – which is why you wouldn’t be able to find the same taste anywhere else. But we take a lot of pride in our quality and make sure people enjoy their experience here.

What’s your role in the business? My dad’s still involved in the back-end stuff, but the three of us play according to our strengths. I deal with the marketing aspect as I majored in it – and that was something I chose because I knew it would come in handy. Jack has an impeccable taste palate hence he’s in charge of research and development, while Anna manages the dayto-day operations. What are your thoughts on the current crop of young hawkerpreneurs? It’s a competitive scene as there are always young hawkers popping up, but it’s also heartening to know that people of our generation don’t mind the hard work and dare to go out of their comfort zone. The rent may

be high, hours long and labour hard to find, but it’s enjoyable as you get to interact directly with customers. What’s your stand between taking a stable job and pursuing a career you’re passionate about? Because of the education we’re entitled to and the way our society has evolved, people no longer view money as a priority in today’s generation. There’s always a trade-off – for us, we chose to give up a high salary for a career that satisfies. There’s no right or wrong; ultimately it all boils down to what suits you best.

Have you ever thought of how life would be like if you took a different route? Sometimes when it gets overly draining, you tend to question yourself whether you’ve made the right choice. I could’ve gotten a comfortable job with a steady paycheck, but I’m glad I took this path as it gives me a lot of opportunities to learn more about myself. Back then, I took a diploma that wasn’t a great fit so I switched over to business management in university which I genuinely enjoyed and am now able to apply back to the business. I can’t say everything fell smoothly into place for me, but I’m lucky in a way because it allowed me to try different things and figure out what works for myself. Any word of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? Be open to trying new things and don’t be afraid of failure. At the same time, always have a backup plan so you can have a safety net to fall back on. What are your plans for the future? Within the next few years, we will be focusing our efforts on stablising our current three outlets. We also plan on venturing into online retail sometime next year so customers abroad will be able to purchase our products easily.

How did the people around you react to you becoming a hawker? I usually face mixed reactions, but that was in the beginning when nobody really saw being a hawker as a viable career. My friends have always been supportive, Coffee Break is but my mother is still located at Amoy Street very apprehensive about Food Centre, Buona Vista it. She’s seen our dad and Raffles Place. slog it out in the past Like them on Facebook and was reluctant to (@coffeebreaksg) for see us suffer like he did, more kopi-licious even more so when it’s updates! all three of us!

Happy Birthday – gemini –

21 May – 20 Jun Beware, Gemini! While the previous months have been rather smooth-sailing, you may find yourself hitting some stumbling blocks this June. Take heart, as an unlikely acquaintance will soon come to your aid. You may start out wary, but keep an open mind and don’t shy away from the kind gesture. And who knows, you might even get a new friend out of it too!

– Cancer –

21 Jun – 22 Jul Lucky you, you could be embarking on your first solo trip this year! Although you have everything mapped out, unforeseen circumstances may force you to venture off the beaten path. While it may be frustrating to have your plans come apart, these challenges could very well help to enrich your trip further, so don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone.

23 Sep – 22 Oct

23 Oct – 21 Nov

As much as you love being at the centre of attention, you can’t help but feel worn out from your jam-packed social life. Ditch partying all night for some much-needed downtime – whether it’s pampering yourself with an R&R session, bunkering down with a good book, or just being a couch potato, it’s time to slow down and focus on yourself. You deserve it!

Being the friendly Scorpio you are, you wouldn’t hesitate lending a helping hand whenever your loved ones are in need. However, keep an eye out for people who are simply milking your generosity. Sure, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to please others, but don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself when you feel taken advantage of.

20 Jan – 18 Feb

19 Feb – 20 Mar

Come June, the holidays will be an excellent time for you to unleash your inner brilliance and welcome new opportunities – be it taking on a new leadership role, helming a school project or even scoring that coveted internship gig. Stay focused on your goals and you’ll be ready to ace anything that comes your way. The odds are in your favour!

Yikes, it seems like tension with a close friend has caused conflict within your inner circle. If trouble has been brewing for a while, don’t wait until it spirals out of control to tackle the situation. Addressing it ASAP will prevent it from snowballing into an even bigger problem – you never know, it may turn out to be a total misunderstanding!

23 Jul – 22 Aug

23 Aug – 22 Sep

Although you’re the type of person who works best on your own, the ever-growing workload on your plate has been weighing you down and leaving you burnt out. Never feel ashamed to ask others for help – you have a great support network that’s more than willing to share the responsibilities with you. That’s what friends are for, right?

Stuck in a rut recently? Feelings of uncertainty have been plaguing you for the past few months and a reality check is in order. Rather than dwelling on it, looking at things from a fresh perspective may help to set you back on track. This June, take the time to indulge in some self-reflection and re-evaluate your priorities – it’ll do you a world of good!

– Sagittarius –

– Capricorn –

After a lot of hard work and a bit of good fortune, your efforts have paid off and your bank account has finally seen an increase. While you may be tempted to splurge on shopping sprees, go easy on the merrymaking and be mindful to keep your expenses in check. You wouldn’t want to go back to worrying about your funds so quickly!

Nostalgia comes knocking this month. Instead of being trapped in the past, see it as an opportunity to move towards your future. If you’re still struggling to let go of the memory, focus your attention on picking up a hobby, helping out a cause or making new friends. Surrounding yourself in good company will help to take your mind off things and let time heal your wounds. Stay strong, Cap!

20 Apr – 20 May

Feeling bogged down by June blues? While a weekend respite from the fray will help to clear your head, decluttering your life will help to put you in a better state of mind. Be it getting rid of old threads in your wardrobe or cutting out toxic friends from your circle, you’ll feel like a weight’s been lifted off your shoulders after doing so!

After a busy first half of the year, getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life is at the top of your to-do list. Whether you’re taking a trip to your favourite vacation spot or embarking on a solo expedition, there’s no better time to fuel your wanderlust. Start making plans for your getaway, because it’s gonna be a wild one!
