Hi dear readers,

SNAPS FROM KOREA

So, early on in April, the Teenage team packed our bags and left for an eight-day trip to Jeju and Seoul in Korea. We’d been going on about everything Korean for so long that it was only natural that we made the trip down ourselves, as a team! All (except one) of us had visited Hallyu-land, so our combined experiences and suggestions made the trip super fun. Then, on the penultimate (second last) day of our trip, we saw some terrible news just as we were heading out in the morning. I’m sure you would’ve known about the Sewol Ferry disasater by now. It was absolutely heartbreaking. Everyone in the hotel lobby, staff and guests alike, stood silent watching the TV.

Our two-day stay at scenic Jeju was definitely not enough to explore all its breathtaking sights!

The gloom that hung over us that day was palpable throughout Seoul. And even now, as recovery efforts are underway, more bad news is coming in, revealing the deep and sudden slump in Korean tourism as holidaymakers cancel plans or head elsewhere. We hate to see such a vibrant country suffer from a tragedy like that. There’s so much to love about Korea from its culture to its street food and entertainment. So if you’re thinking of heading somewhere this June holiday, maybe you might consider heading down? Ahead, the team shares all our favourite sights, eats and must-dos. Follow our guide, and you’ll be guaranteed plenty of good trip memories! On this note, the Teenage team would like to send our love to Korea. You are in our thoughts and prayers! Warmest regards,

Banana Milk - a must-try in Korea! Lav: “You have to dress like this to blend in...” Me: “Seriously?!”

‘I LOVE YOU’

Bands with bad relationships among members won’t last, and haters were speculating that the 2NE1 girls didn’t speak to each other once cameras weren’t around. Dara put the rumours to rest by sharing that she preferred texting them about her troubles instead of directly asking them for a chat because of her shy personality. If that isn’t enough to convince you, it was revealed that CL once risked her life for Dara in Japan during a magnitude-9 earthquake! She climbed three-storeys in a shaking building to reach Dara, who was alone. If that isn’t true friendship, we’re not sure what is.

‘Try To Follow Me’

Back when girly-girls were the inthing, 2NE1 was a breath of fresh air with their tough-girl attitude. They popularised loud, gangster-styles reminiscent of labelmates BIGBANG, and many girl groups after that, like 4Minute and SISTAR, also found success with a fiercer image. Their lyrics may be simple, but it’s their signature ‘girl power’ look and sound – which can be seen in MVs ‘Fire’ and ‘I Don’t Care’ – that’s difficult to replicate. However, as trendsetters, the band moved onto other concepts quickly, while still keeping their

“There is no such thing as the ’2NE1 style.’ We’re not a group that will stick to one colour. Predictability and normalcy; it’s all so boring, isn’t it? We will never stop reinventing ourselves; we’ll always be the group with no boundaries, no limits and no answers.” – CL sassy attitudes. They adopted a more feminine image for the ‘I Love You’ and ‘Falling in Love’ music vids, while maturing into classy women for ‘Missing You’ and ‘Good To Me’. There’s no such thing as a ‘comfort zone’ for 2NE1, as they’re constantly pushing themselves to evolve and set fresh, creative examples for the rest of the music industry. Their ideas may not please everyone, but they’re never going to be the band that’s stale and lagging behind, that’s for sure!

Their unabashed goofiness

Even though most Super Junior-M members aren’t native speakers of Mandarin, they’ve come a long way since their unintelligible ‘Super Girl’ days. Now that they’ve had more time to adjust (let’s face it, Mandarin is one of the hardest languages to learn), they actually sound really good. Kudos to them for the effort!

Album of the Year. The group also landed first place on CCTV’s Global Chinese Music Standings, leading E.L.F’s to create the #SuperJunior2014Domination hashtag!

This infectious and perky melody will chase away your Monday blues for sure. And the song doesn’t get dreary even with repeated listens. It actually gets more addictive! If you need a boost of energy, put this on to combat the drudgery of daily life. Definitely a great listen!

Playlist worthy tune

We like how the set keeps changing every few seconds, giving us more to see. And of course, the synchronised choreography pros showed off their sharp dance skills, but with a slight twist this time. We’re digging the Bollywood vibes we’re getting from their dance formations and energetic moves!

This EP showcased the versatility of their vocals, from intense-dance track ‘Overdose’, to smooth falsetto notes

Variety and style

What we like about Overdose:

XO’s new EP Overdose was released on 7 May, after delaying it out of respect for the Sewol Ferry tragedy. At time of print, both music video versions released of ‘Overdose’ (one each in Korean and Mandarin) have collectively garnered over a whopping 3.8 million views. As if we’d expect any less from the boys who brought us their hit song ‘Growl’! Just like the dual-nature of the emotions expressed on the song, EXO looks gothic yet beautiful in the MV, and the explosive choreography they came up with also stands out in strong contrast to their almost vulnerable image. We like the way the members expressed the song through their moves, busting out jerky motions amidst graceful ones to reflect the angst in their lyrics.

Unique imagery

on ‘Moonlight’. We heard mellow crooning on ‘Thunder’, while ‘Run’ brought us their youthful bright sound. We appreciate their effort in providing varying genres of songs for our different moods!

EXO

JUN 2014

SECOND NOMIN EE:

For their MV and album showcases, EXO got the choreography just right. Having all the members on stage at once could be too overwhelming, so the band alternated the members who appeared at the beginning, slowly building up their numbers as the song reached its peak.

Right balance

The biggest similarity ‘Overdose’ has with ‘Growl’, was the continuous one-take shots. However, they shook things up by inserting scenes of the boys figuring out a maze that they’re trapped in, giving mystery to the overall MV. We also liked that they played with the camera, pulling and pushing it away.

TEENAGE SAYS:

EXO

We saw their adorable and comedic side through footage from EXO Showtime and the EXO First Box DVD. For example, Kris who’s supposedly the ‘cool kid’ keeps doing funny actions that leaves us in stiches, while Baekhyun loves to imitate the other members, amusing us with his shenanigans.

CUTEST PERSONAS

“CNBLUE always touches me with their love for each other, as well as towards their dream to make good music!” – Loke Pei Ling, Executive (Marketing & Communications)

TEENAGE SAYS:

We hear of arguments about members in bands being treated unequally. However, CNBLUE is really different because not only do they split their earnings equally, but the band’s main earner (Yonghwa) doesn’t grumble about it at all, and the other members are really appreciative of his kind gesture. That’s something we’ve never come across!

SHOW-STOPPING SUPERSTAR Crowned Asia’s Dancing King, Show Lo delivered killer moves and a rousing emotional performance at his recent concert here!

Show Lo’s mum came down to lend her support!

T

hough he has been busy filming for an upcoming idol drama, Show Lo made time for fans here on 3 May, when he stopped by as part of his Over The Limit: Dance Soul Returns World Live Tour. When he appeared at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, the 7,500-strong crowd welcomed their idol with fiery fervour, and there were plenty of reasons to cheer indeed!

TEXT: HO LI YEN AND YUEN YI YING PHOTOS: UNUSUAL ENTERTAINMENT

Opening the concert with his new song, ‘Lion Roar’, Show peppered his two-hour performance with both old and new hits like ‘The Leading Role’ and ‘ONLY U’, together with heart-pounding dance numbers and eye-popping outfit changes. Unlike his past concert, which suffered from audio glitches, this went along smoothly, taking fans on an emotional ride. At one point, he made the crowd laugh with a video of himself as an over-the-top fan, which was meant to teach his supporters proper concert etiquette. He also tried speaking Singlish, which, despite being done by many acts before, was clearly a crowd-pleaser. Peeling back his polished facade, the star didn’t hesitate to open up about his private life. His mum had come down from Taiwan to lend her support, as he sang a song about his late dad, clips of his father were shown on the big screen. Photos of his parents’ wedding and a letter to his dad left his mum in tears. This precious moment in the midst of his upbeat concert left us quite emotional. Our thoughts go out to the mother and son duo, we sure hope they are doing fine! Indeed, with such a well-executed performance, the Taiwan megastar deserves all the praise he’s ever received. We’ve never been disappointed by any of his concerts and we’re sure the same can be said for his shows to come! JUN 2014

H T I W S R A E 10 Y ! E N I N E C I AL 52 JUN 2014

Alice Nine has had a long history! What has been your top three favourite moments? The first was when we first performed live at the Nippon Budokan, where many famous live albums were recorded – including Bob Dylan and Ozzy Osbourne’s. Second, was when we produced our first album. Third, was when we performed live at Fuji-Q Highland Conifer Forest for our 10th anniversary!

So far, what’s been the band’s most stand-out song for you? ‘Stargazer’, because the song is deep and meaningful for me and it’s about being understood.

PHOTOS: RED SPADE ENTERTAINMENT

We can’t believe it’s taken them so long, but the Jap-rock band is finally having their first-ever Asian concert tour to celebrate their 10th anniversary! Nao from Alice Nine reveals the band’s best memories and enduring quality in an email interview with Johanna Teo.

Tora (Guitarist)

Tell us a secret about your members that none of your fans know! Shou really loves eating Japanese beef bowl (Gyudon). Hiroto is a deep sleeper – he can’t be woken up from his sleep!

What would you guys be doing if you were not in Alice Nine? We’d most certainly still be making and playing music! Probably in another band, if not Alice Nine.

What do you think about the Hallyu (K-pop) wave that’s so big now? It’s pervasive in Japan – even my mum is a fan!

If you could give yourself a piece of advice back when you debuted, what would it be? It would be to spend more of the money earned on taking care of myself and to cherish more of the moments with people we meet along the way.

Before your concerts these days, are there special rituals you do before taking the stage? For me, I would run through the flow of the performance again and again. Also, I would always have to go the gents prior to my performance.

Where do you see yourselves in another 10 years, and what do you hope to achieve by then? Health is really important, and hopefully our fans will still love our music.

Imagine you’re building a time capsule to be opened a decade from now. What would you put in it and why? Drums! Because it will be a vintage piece by then and it will definitely fetch a high price! (*laughs*)

If you could time travel, would you choose to go back into the past, stay in the present, or head to the future? The future! So that we continuously set the trend!

What’s the inspiration behind Supernova, the album you released last month?

Is there anything you would like to express to your members?

It’s to show more of our true selves, and about who we are.

“Let’s treat ourselves to a nice dinner!” and “Don’t give up on music!”

What do you think is the band’s strength?

Could you sketch a pic for your Singaporean fans?

It’s got to be our ability to trust one another, and to have faith in one another.

But were there moments where you guys had conflicts? We’ve had many big and small disagreements, and there were times where it took a lot of effort to understand the other party. I will try to understand where the other party is coming from.

BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT

From Smile Kid to Somewhere Somehow , it’s intriguing how all your albums start with the letter 'S’. Is that merely a coincidence? Actually, it’s not! And technically, our debut album is noted as Self-Titled as well. We thought it would be cool at the end of our career to look back and laugh about how we named every album with the letter ‘S’. It’s really just something for our own amusement.

That’s interesting! Playing with the album title Somewhere Somehow, where is that one place in the world you’d want to go? I’ve never been to Maldives and I’ve heard really great things about it. I’m really fascinated by Asian culture as well, so I think I’d like to spend a lot of time here.

Your new record is fully funded by the fans. What was the most rewarding part of the process? That would be to actually to put it out! It’s hard for bands to release albums, especially when there’s no one funding it from a label. So I think it proved to us how strong our fan base is and how dedicated we are to them.

58 JUN 2014

When listening to the tracks, it feels like you’re telling a powerful personal story. What is the message you wish to convey through this album? The overall message is definitely positivity. There is so much negativity in the world that I wanted to create music that could cheer people up. Having fans tell us that our music saved their lives or made them feel better is probably the best thing for us to hear.

Is there a special song in your nine-year discography that you’d recommend to first-time listeners? I think ‘Check Yes Juliet’ will always be my answer to this. It’s the song that started everything for us and I’m so grateful to have written it.

We heard that 'Art of War’ was supposed to be included in Catching Fire. If you were given the chance again, which film would you choose to make a song for? Yeah and we almost got it, but Coldplay took our spot (laughs). Not a bad band to be beaten out by! I think we would want to write a song for 50 Shades of Grey, and make it the sexiest song we’ve ever written… you never know!

We can’t wait for your upcoming show in Singapore! What can fans expect? This is the very first time we’ll be playing in Singapore, so we always try to make it the most memorable show – not only for the fans but also for us. We really just want everyone to have one of the best nights ever. I know it will be that way for us!

THE BIG DEAL

ABOUT ELLIE 1. Fast-track success Ellie had her first taste of fame when her debut album Lights topped various charts. She even had royalties gushing over her musical talent – having golden opportunities to perform for President Barack Obama, Prince William and Kate Middleton is rather impressive for a newcomer if you ask us! Fast forward three years later and she’s now a global superstar in the midst of her Halcyon Days concert tour.

2. Queen of covers The songstress’ crystalline vocals defined her as a bona fide powerhouse, so we weren’t surprised at her amazing song covers. Because she’s the coolest, we list some of her best renditions that are arguably on par with the originals.

#1 ‘All I Want’ by Kodaline Her latest cover of Kodaline’s massive hit had us abusing the replay button, and later received a nod from the Irish band itself through Twitter.

#2 ‘Only Girl (In The World)’ by Rihanna

PHOTOS: UNIVERSAL MUSIC SINGAPORE

Attempting to cover this sultry pop gem was a dangerous move, but Ellie turned it into a praiseworthy soulful interpretation.

#3 ‘Mirrors’ by Justin Timberlake There’s much to like about Ellie’s acoustic version, which traded Justin’s languid handclap beats for delicate instrumentals.

You know Ellie Goulding for her mystical vocals, but dig deeper and you’ll find out why she’s on everyone’s hot list. Get familiar with the British sweetheart before her upcoming concert here! By Chew Hui Ling 3. Fan’s favourite diva If you’re a Goulddigger, you can always count on Ellie to do you justice. At Coachella, one of the biggest music fests in California, a fan alarmingly somersaulted onto the stage, but she gave him a hug instead. She then playfully warned the security, “You better not be kicking him out! Boo, bring him back. How about I don’t do the last song till he comes back?” Talk about a personality that’s cool like cucumber!

4. Solo and lovin’ it! Girl has attitude, and in a good way. This independent gal has emphasised more than once that she doesn’t need a man to make her happy. “I used to put men on a pedestal, but I decided to remedy that and that’s why I’m single now.” Despite being tangled in relationship rumours with Ed Sheeran, Niall Horan and recently McFly’s Dougie Poynter, she still coolly stands by her viewpoint. At least we know that if she decides to stay single, she’ll always have BFFs Cara Delevingne and Lorde by her side!

WHAT’S UP, KOREA?

Find out the A-Z of what’s trending and happening in the homeland of Hallyu culture. A for:

Are they dating?

Alphabetising Body Shapes Koreans are really creative at coming up with alphabets to describe different body parts and shapes. Apart from the commonly mentioned S-Line used to describe the side view of the body, there’s also the M-line for six-pack abs, X-line for hourglass figures and U-line, the exposed view from low-back garments. The list goes on…

A

F for:

Frozen This Disney production easily became the highest grossing animation film (over S$94 million) in Korea, spawning tons of covers from the likes of SISTAR’s Hyorin, Ailee and Sungha Jung, not to mention commercials from Samsung showing Yuna Kim (professional skater).

C for:

Couple-spotting Couples aren’t afraid to show that they’re paired off! They usually have at least one matching item on their person, whether it’s clothes or accessories. That’s why eagleeyed fans often keep a close watch on what their idols put on!

B C D E F D for:

Delectable Desserts B for:

Blind-dating Craze You may cringe at the idea of getting set-up, but many Koreans are really enthusiastic about blind-dating! They’ve even categorised the dates into four kinds, the kookiest one being ‘bungaeting’, which literally means lightning meeting, where both parties discuss the context of the date beforehand so minimal time is wasted!

64 JUN 2014

Koreans love their sweet treats, as can be shown by the dessert places popping up by the dozen in departmental stores, and the crazy queues that follow. Even though they’re not exactly affordable – costing about S$9 for shaved ice – Koreans don’t mind splurging on such ‘small luxury items’ to de-stress!

E for:

Eye spy with my little eye It’s certainly not easy for celebrities nowadays! Technological advances have given stalkers the ability to watch their idols 24/7 (such stalkers are called Saseang fans and they’re the bane of every celeb’s life)! We heard that D.O’s (EXO) underwear got stolen and offered up for auction! Can anyone say creepy?

Must have phone!

They look good together!

G for:

Glamping What’s that? Glamping stands for ‘Glamour Camping’, where you spend time outdoors without actually roughing it out. The ‘tents’ have luxurious amenities like beds, kitchens and bathrooms. Places like The Shilla Jeju in Jeju Island offers glamping, but of course, prepare yourselves – the prices definitely aren’t as dirt-cheap as traditional camping!

Idol-Shipping

Keeping Plugged-in

It’s been around for ages but it’s not dying out. Idol-shipping is the act of supporting imaginary relationships between celebrities, regardless of their gender or age. Fans go all out for their One-True-Pairing and go sleuthing for any clues that might ‘expose’ the secret relationships they’ve been fantasising about.

Seoul is often referred to as ‘the most wired city’, but there’s a growing problem – one in five South Korean teenagers are addicted to using their smartphones for more than seven hours a day! With the burgeoning reliance on apps (used to make payments or as student IDs to sign in at school), and mega-fast internet speed, this is a classic case of having too much of a good thing!

L J K I

H for:

Happy Alone Day Black Day, which is the anti-Valentine’s Day in Korea, is when all singletons who didn’t receive presents on V-day or White Day (more on that ahead), gather and eat JjaJjangMyeon (black bean paste noodles) to commiserate.

L for: J for:

Joyful 100 days Forget the monthly or yearly anniversaries. Koreans usually celebrate important occasions on the 100th day mark. They even have apps to help them remember once 100 days are up!

Let’s_Talk_Honestly Koreans often take to Twitter to bare their true feelings after dark, posting morose stuff like “I feel lonely… I don’t know why”. It’s always easier to release pent-up emotions behind an online mask!

“OMG! He is looking at me.” Pei Ling hurriedly snaps their photos.

We were in Hongdae to eat at Haha‘s restaurant [Paljamakchang [395-17 Seogyo-dong (23 Jandari-ro)], which we heard he frequents. However, we were told it was closed for renovations. Heading to a popular BBQ joint instead, a few Teenage members saw a black van with dark windows pull up by the roadside – which usually means a celeb (or celebs) are inside. We saw fans and curious onlookers rushing forward with huge cameras and got really excited! Soon, good-looking men spilled out of the van and we were thrilled to realise that it was A-JAX! In broken Korean, we asked fans what they were doing and heard they were filming a video. When the boys walked past us in the narrow walkway, we swear they looked at us. Total swoon-worthy moment!

Lavonne goes gaga over Lee MinHo socks!

Must-see/Must do: No trip to

10,000

Must-see/Must do: In the daytime, the area looks like an ajjuma (older Korean woman) market with stalls selling pots and pans, towels, veggies and meat. However, come dusk, tents are set up down the street where you can pick meats and veggies to be grilled or stir-fried. Quite delicious, but watch your budget as the sticks add up quickly and can cost a bit (about ₩10,000 for three sticks of grilled chicken).

Seoul is complete without a visit to its major shopping district, Myeong-dong. Stock up on beauty products from popular Korean brands like The Face Shop and Missha: prices are almost half of what we pay in Singapore! You can also explore beauty stores like Todacosa and Olive Young. They stock famous Korean brands and beauty gadgets not available here, you never know what you’re going to see!

Mall addicts should head to the famed Lotte Department Store and M Plaza. If you’re feeling tired, pop into one of Myeong-dong’s many chic cafes, like Hollys Coffee, or the ₩ popular Paris Baguette! 00

As you snack on all the yummy food sold from pushcarts along the streets, browse the vendor stalls selling unique K-pop memorabilia like socks, T-shirts and mobile phone accessories. They’d make great souvenirs! We also went gaga over the stores that sold gorgeous ₩10,000 (S$12) bags – if only we had more luggage space!

Even at night, last-minute souvenir hunters can still pick up some nice gifts for loved ones and friends. In addition to stores selling magnets, chopsticks, bookmarks and Korean doll keychains, there are also a few shops selling fresh, chopped and powdered ginseng that would make luxurious gifts without costing too much.

most famous shopping area, but Dongdaemun’s malls 3,0 ₩ are where you can shop at almost any time of day! Most 00 stores start business at 10am, staying open till 5 or even 8am.

Must Try! The BBQ items at Hongik Sootbul Kalbi were the best we had on the trip!

Must-see/Must do: The catch, items here usually retail for higher than you’d pay in Myeong-dong (you could consider it a midnight surcharge?), and while you can still get good deals at wholesale stores, you’d need to get at least 5-10 pieces of each design before the owners will do business with you. Hint: pick up some Korean for better discounts! With its many malls, Dongdaemun is bursting with merchandise. We’d highly recommend heading to Doota, which specialises in teen fashion and houses plenty of up-and-coming Korean designers. Doota also has a large outdoor concert hall, where you can catch classical Korean music performances and fashion shows. Don’t miss the vibrant food scene here too. In addition to countless BBQ joints, foodies will love the Mukja Golmok food alley with its delicious treats like knife-cut noodles (kalguksu) and fried Korean dumplings (mandu).

Both areas are the heart of youth culture in Seoul and quite similar to each other. You’ll find cafes, clubs, wall murals, and plenty of Korean college student fashion. The best part: the clothes, bags and shoes sold here tend to be cheaper and more unique than those sold in Myeongdong. Don’t miss Hongdae’s more unusual attractions, like the Trick Eye Museum featuring optical illusions. You can pose with interactive exhibits, so it appears like you’re doing kungfu in Shaolin Temple, or levitating in a European art gallery! If you like traditional music, visit the Nanta Theatre, which performs traditional Korean percussion (samulnori). JUN 2014

ADVICE

Dear readers, A few months ago, I read a heart-warming article by Natalie Soh in The New Paper. She highlighted school kids who help their parents at their hawker stall. However, I was saddened to read that some parents, and even teens, were afraid to be identified – in case “the kids were teased”. Facts – hawkers are self-employed, needn’t fear retrenchment or have to kowtow to a boss. Actually, to me, they are in an enviable position. When I returned from a holiday last year, I was informed that my “friend” had died. He was famous enough to be featured in the press about his stall. Pity they didn’t pay him homage when he was alive so he could appreciate it. My family first came in contact with this particular hawker family in the 1960s, when he and his brother used to help their dad at the stall we regularly patronised. After National Service, the guys took over from their dad. We respected them and introduced them to friends. The problem – they’d never take our money, so I had to send my friends to place the order and pay so he would receive his money. During Chinese New Year (CNY) 2013, I visited the stall to give gifts to the two brothers. As always, I invited them to have a meal with us, but they were too busy. When I heard of his demise, I had one consolation – he knew I valued his generosity to me by way of my CNY gifts. Another special friend of mine used to be a supervisor in a cleaning organisation, but as she aged, she accepted the job of a cleaner because she had to support her children. Her reduced status does not bother me. I like the woman, she is well read; she can discuss everything in Berita Harian, the Malay language newspaper, intelligently and passionately. She is a great cook and has great dignity and a wonderful sense of humour. The fact that she now has, what some people consider, a lowly job should not make her any less of a person. Recently, my friend Angela and I invited several waiters and waitresses, who serve us regularly onboard our favourite cruise ship, to a ‘Thank

You Dinner’. Their surprise at the gesture and gratitude made it all worthwhile. I want to share something else. When I taught at a school, the gardener, cleaners etc. were invited to the year-end staff dinner. These workers usually sat at their own table, not with academic staff. I broke the divide by opting to sit with them. And why not? They were nicely dressed and well behaved. I have no problem mingling with anyone, as long as they are honest and polite. These people were always doing extra things for me during the year. I enjoyed sitting with them, especially as it made a difference to them. Of course, many of my friends, who are terrible snobs, can’t accept my “friendship choices”. Why do I share

these experiences with you? I want to make a point – everyone is deserving of respect and friendship, as long as they are honest decent people. As a writer, I have the opportunity to interact with people from different walks of life. This taught me never to judge people according to their credentials, station or earning power. Life would be so much more precious if we judged people based on character, not occupation and wealth. If Anton Casey – who made headlines early this year – subscribed to respecting people instead of looking down on those he considers “poor”, he would not have been hounded out of Singapore. Bottom line – None of the humble folk I call friends were sacked. None of them had to slink out of the country disgraced. I should introduce him to my multi-millionaire friends, who park their pricey cars at various parking lots then take an MRT because it’s convenient. Because they have no hangups, they have no problem taking public transport. Kudos to them! Always here for you.

Do you h problemave a you wish to share? Someth in get off g to you chest? r Kelly’s responses take into account age, experience and needs of writers. Those writing in know and seek her tough love, no-nonsense approach. Readers wanting a different type of response should seek advice elsewhere. Older and more experienced readers knowing the answers to questions need to exercise patience. Not everyone knows what you know. After qualifying as a teacher, Kelly Chopard went on to attend several counselling courses. Over the past 30 years, she has been invited to sit on panels and discussion groups, give talks and has taught modules dealing with youth issues. She counsels primary and secondary school pupils. She also engages in parent-pupil counselling sessions. In the 1970s, she was a member of a People’s Association Team counselling young adults in areas like drugs, smoking and other health and social issues. From 1979 to 1983 she had a counselling column in a local woman’s magazine. Since 1996 she has been responding to Teenage readers in her Dear Kelly column.
