ADVERTORIAL

LOOKING PROMTASTIC Prepping for prom is like cramming for exams – leaving everything to the last minute won’t give you good results. Tick off our checklist to look like a bona fide superstar on your big day!

Avoid drastic hair changes You may feel a need to be more adventurous, but there’s no need to go all YOLO with your do. Snipping off your locks or dyeing tresses a shocking colour right before prom leaves too many chances for mishaps. Who wants a crazy cut or neongreen hair for the big night? Opt for safer hairstyles with less permanent effects – you can curl your hair or use temporary hairspray. You’ll thank us later!

, Don t starve yourself Many of us are guilty of this – consuming little to nothing in the weeks before just to look better or skinnier in dresses. The fact is that crash diets don’t really work and the calories pile on even faster once you start eating normally again. Instead, maintain a proper exercise routine and eat healthily at proper timings. You’ll find yourself breathing much easier in your gorgeous gown!

All about that base Unlike the lucky ducks who are blessed with perfect skin, we often find ourselves in the vicious cycle of trying to conceal our acne and gaining more blemishes as a result. Realising that combating the root problem is the key, Hiruscar Post Acne ($19.90, leading pharmacies and personal care stores) acts on awful scars and pitted holes to smoothen and lighten ‘em up! It takes just three to four weeks* before skin is all smooth again. Better yet, no more piling on the concealer and foundation! Finally, breathable skin…

Dress dilemma Unique dresses cost a bomb and are super hard to find, so unless you have deep pockets, you better start the search early. Try referring to your fave celeb’s red carpet looks for some inspiration, and make sure it’s realistic – no ballgowns are needed for a boogie night theme! Also, avoid embarrassing outfit clashes by coordinating with your pals. We don’t want a prom dress showdown right?

Clear your Complexion

Combat acne scarring fast with Hiruscar Post Acne ($19.90, personal care and beauty stores). Specially formulated to lighten dark marks, smooth depressed scars and prevent acne recurrence, it’s been proven to work in as little as four weeks*! *Clinical study and satisfaction test conducted by Dermscan on 25 subjects in France, 2011. Individual results may vary.

BIG NIGHT

PREP

Get your gals together for the ultimate pampering session before prom! By Yuen Yi Ying This isn’t your average sleepover party. You’re gearing up for the buzziest bash of your teenage life! Upgrade your regular BFF catch-up sesh, check into a hotel and get groomed and gorgeous together!

FACE

16 NOV 2014

The night before any important event, it’s best to stick to tried-and-true products, avoid facials and other drastic treatments to prevent breakouts and redness. But if you want something more luxurious and special yet gentle, the Crabtree & Evelyn Damask Rose collection ($28-55) is suitable for all complexions, hydrating deeply for dream skin the next day.

HAIR

If you want your hairstyle to last, diligence is key as the least bit of moisture left in locks can cause your do to fall flat and frizz before long. Apply Percy & Reed Perfect Blow Dry Makeover Spray ($26, Sephora) before you start to get closer to the salon-perfect finish you desire. It guards tresses against heat damage while providing light hold and shine so hair looks incredible without being stiff. The tools you use matter too. Using infrared heat, ionic and ceramic technology, the Revlon Laser

Ceramic Ionic Infrared Curling Iron and Straightener ($69.90 each, selected Sasa and Watsons) promise faster and even styling that leaves locks frizz-free, shiny and soft without being dry.

DO THIS! Wrap your hair

in a towel after applying masks. The warmth opens up cuticles so the treatment can penetrate more deeply.

SUPER SUITE! Love the room? We shot in the cute Ang Ku Kueh room at Hotel Clover The Arts (58 South Bridge Road, www.hotelclover.com). There are 44 rooms in this boutique hotel, and each has a unique design painted by both professional and student artists such as Ceno2 and those from Raffles Design Institute and the Life Art Society.

Party skin must-haves: 1 TheFaceShop Blackhead Out White Clay Nose Pack ($9.90) 2 Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Overnight Treatment ($39, AsterSpring Centres) 3 Hiruscar Post Acne ($19.90, leading pharmacies and personal care stores) 4 Beaute Forest Witch Hazel & Chamomile Sooth Mask ($10.90 for six pieces, Watsons)

TO KILL A

WE’RE HALFWAY TO THE END OF THE HUNGER GAMES TRILOGY, BUT KATNISS AND CREW ARE JUST GETTING WARMED UP. JOHANNA TEO GUIDES YOU THROUGH THE SUSPENSE.

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD!

WATCH HOW THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART ONE GOES DOWN ON 20 NOVEMBER IN THEATRES NEAR YOU. STAY VERY ALERT!

32 NOV 2014

Our favourite heroine is back with the beginning of how her story ends. Wrapping up Catching Fire with a huge cliffhanger, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has literally shattered the games forever (with her trusty arrow) and has been rescued to the mysterious District 13 sans her ‘love’ Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Katniss finds her world tilted even further when she finds herself unable to fully trust her allies, but she must now step up in the centre of the rebellion as their symbol of hope – the Mockingjay. Caught in intricate webs of deceit and manipulation, Katniss’ battle to overthrow the Capitol will not be her final war. May the odds be ever in her favour…

MOCKINGJAY

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Out of all the bookto film adaptations, The Hunger Games trilogy has been awesome (unlike some sparkly ones), albeit minor tweaks to the characters. In Mockingjay, we see the returning cast along with a few unfamiliar faces. We fill you in on these new allies and potential enemies, and how their roles will affect our beloved heroes.

WHO: MESSALLA (EVAN ROSS) ROLE: Cressida’s assistant WHO: ALMA COIN (JULIANNE MOORE) ROLE: PRESIDENT OF DISTRICT 13

WHO: CRESSIDA (NATALIE DORMER) ROLE: DIRECTOR

President Coin leads the rebellion on the Capitol and was behind the arena rescue of Katniss, Finnick and Beetee. Described as being cold and calculative, there is more than meets the eye to this character, which makes Katniss distrust her. IMPORTANCE:

Capitol resident turned rebel, Cressida is in charge of filming propaganda shots (propos) against the Capitol. Her dedication to getting top-quality footage despite the danger impresses Katniss, whom Cressida is fiercely loyal to. IMPORTANCE:

WHO: LYME (LILY RABE) ROLE: COMMANDER/MENTOR FROM DISTRICT 2

In-charge of the rebellion of District 2, Lyme is a victor of a previous Hunger Game and she’s determined to align her district with the rebels. IMPORTANCE:

WHO: BOGGS (MAHERSHALA ALI) ROLE: SOLDIER

Described as President Coin’s right hand man, Boggs becomes Katniss’ protector after she joins the rebellion. He eventually earns her trust after showing his loyalty to Katniss over Coin. IMPORTANCE:

WATCH OUT!

Part of the TV crew that joined the rebellion (including Cressida), he proves to be a valuable asset due to his resourcefulness. He also acts as Katniss’ makeup assistant for the propos. IMPORTANCE:

WHO: POLLUX (ELDEN HENSON) ROLE: CAMERAMAN

WHO: PAYLOR (PATINA MILLER) ROLE: COMMANDER

WHO: ANTONIUS (ROBERT KNEPPER) ROLE: UNKNOWN

Authoritative despite her youthful outlook, Commander Paylor leads the rebellion in District 8. Her character will be more prominent in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part Two.

Much is unknown about this entirely new character (he’s not in the books either), but it’s believed that Antonius will be fighting for the Capitol. However, anything could happen!

Punished by the Capitol, Pollux was made an Avox (they have their tongues cut out so they become mute) and forced to work underground for five years before his brother Castor bought his freedom. Joining the rebellion, he bonds with Katniss and proves to be very useful.

IMPORTANCE: WE’LL FIND OUT!

Born This Way

The Fame

Stefani Germanotta aka Lady Gaga wasn’t the bold and quirky starlet you see today – neither was she into pop. Her musical passions led to involvements in theatre plays, a classic-rock cover band, and gigs at jazz bars. Trained in jazz, she even won a competition in the genre. A rare video of pre-Gaga was of her performing selfpenned pieces ‘Captivated’ and ‘Electric Kiss’ at a New York University annual talent show. “Norah Jones, look out!” The judges raved about her soulful performance. Going op made her world famous, but Gaga’s true roots lie with jazz and rock for sure, and boy can this girl sing!

Gaga had a tough road to stardom – she was dropped from a major music label before she got started, and that failed deal didn’t even come till her musical direction slanted towards pop. Rob Fusari (songwriter/producer) told Gaga ‘Stef, what if we sat down today, abandon what we were going to work on… and start with a more dance thing?” She flat-out refused, but was eventually swayed to write ‘Beautiful, Dirty, Rich’, and her career took off. However, Gaga shared her dissatisfaction with her musical transformation, “If it wasn’t me, I wouldn’t listen to this. I would be bored at this show.”

38 NOV 2014

Sign #3 Do What U Want After a tumultuous 2013, with a cancelled tour due to hip surgery and splitting with her long-time manager Troy Carter, Gaga hinted on social media about betrayal. “My health did not matter. I did not matter unless I could perform,” she revealed her lack of creative control, saying she only had a week to plan and execute the ‘Do What U Want’ MV, leading to delays. “This is a very hard lesson. I have lost loved ones to the greed of money.” With Gaga being sick and tired of her treatment and management, it’s little wonder she’d break out to do her own thing!

WHAT A YEAR 2014 has been quite successful for One Direction, but they’re determined to end it with a loud bang with new album Four. Lyn Chua dishes the craziness behind making the record.

1

Fans have been jittery since Simon Cowell hinted the quintet might disband – it didn’t help that the album was named Four. However, the boys explained that it simply represents their fourth album released.

2 3

The album was recorded around the world while 1D was touring, and for all you know, a song might’ve been created in Singapore!

5

There are rumors that Ed Sheeran’s song, ‘Don’t’, is about Niall breaking the bro-code by cheating with Ellie Goulding, whom Ed was dating. And all this happened while One Direction was on tour with Ed. Yikes!

6

Liam recently issued a challenge to haters, saying “We just wanna make good music. Honestly, every lad out there thinking One Direction is this and that – pick up our album and see what you feel.” Seems like good vibes abound as album preorders reached #1 in 67 countries, two months before the album is even released!

PHOTO: SONY MUSIC

Describing their record as more grown up since they’re older and want to grow with fans, there’s a lot more creative input from the lads on this album. Directioners can also look forward to collaborations with musicians like Ed Sheeran, Kodaline, The 1975 and OneRepublic.

4

According to Julian Bunetta, 1D’s frequent collaborator, many songs on this album have layers of hidden meanings. Tunes such as ‘Get Away’, a potential track co-written by Harry and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, will certainly get fans cracking their brains!

Grab a copy of Four when it’s out on 17 November! NOV 2014

HAL F WAY T O VICT ORY From the contestants to their supporters, everyone was a complete mess of nerves when they came together on 20 September for Teenage Mission: K-pop Dance Battle 2014.

Hosted by jovial celeb host Noah Yap, the competition saw contestants giving it their all, displaying great skill and choreography. During breaks, Noah pumped up the buzzy spirit with humorous banter and stage games like the one where audience members had to compete in their own dance battle. They had to jive to one of three K-pop songs and we have to give them props for being so sporting! The audience got to pick the winner, but the TKDB judges had the unenviable task of picking the top groups from amidst the talented semi-finalists!

Noah easing the contestants’ nerves with a few jokes.

It was a difficult deliberation process, but the judges finally selected the best teams of the day. We wish them the best of luck for the finals!

Congratulations to all the finalists!

THE ULTIMATE BEAUTY DIET Being beautiful is taking care of your body inside and out. Instead of following unhealthy dieting fads, try these easy recipes to enhance your natural beauty. By Phoebe Low

EYES

As the largest organ in your body, it’s important to take care of your skin. Look out for ingredients rich in antioxidants and Vitamin E to combat dry and dull skin.

The eyes are the windows to your soul, so make them clear and bright to reflect your beauty. Food packed with vitamin A, specifically beta-carotene, should do the trick.

Antioxidant Salad:

Salmon with Lentils:

• Combine diced avocado, slivered red onion, orange segments and pomegranate seeds on a bed of lettuce. Toss with olive oil and lime juice, and salt and pepper to taste.

• Pan-fry or broil a mustardglazed salmon fillet and serve over lentils, stir-fried with roughly-chopped kale and leeks.

• POWER PLAYERS: Avocado, onion, pomegranate

Banana Almond Smoothie: • Blend a frozen banana with almond butter, flax seed, almond milk and honey, till smooth and creamy. • POWER PLAYERS: Banana, flax seed, almond butter and milk.

NAILS HAIR No conditioner can replicate the naturally healthy shine of your hair – it's only attainable if you eat right. Get your essential fill of zinc and vitamin D to strengthen tresses.

Baked Eggs: • Bake eggs on top of a mixture of canned tomatoes, diced bell peppers, and spinach. Serve with toast.

Don't overlook your nails even though they're seemingly unimportant. Pump up protein and iron-rich food for strong and healthy nails.

Simple Banana Pudding:

Vegetables Crush:

• Grind walnuts, pitted dates and dried coconut before adding almond milk and chopped bananas. Blend all into a smooth puree and chill before serving.

• Blend carrots, Swiss chard, apples, pears and ginger root with lemon juice and ice.

• POWER PLAYERS: Walnuts, dates, bananas

• POWER PLAYERS: Carrots, Swiss chard, ginger

• POWER PLAYERS: Eggs, bell peppers, spinach

BODY When you plan your diet with your workouts, achieving that desired figure becomes so much easier. Incorporate fibre and minerals into your diet for an extra boost.

Nutty Blueberry Smoothie: • Blend frozen blueberries with chopped walnuts, Greek yoghurt, flax seeds, honey and a splash of almond milk. • POWER PLAYERS: Blueberries, walnuts, Greek yoghurt

Chicken and Olive Pasta: • Stir-fry chicken breasts with fresh olives, sundried tomatoes, chopped bell peppers and garlic, and olive oil. Serve over wholemeal pasta. • POWER PLAYERS: Chicken breast, olives, bell peppers

Dear readers,

• A SHOCKING ADMISSION – Recently, there was a surprising statement made by Facebook admitting it carried out a secret “emotion experiment”. Netizens were understandably angered, but an important lesson was learnt. Researchers discovered that people could pass on feelings, real or imagined, to others via Facebook. “This means that the emotions expressed by people on Facebook can influence our own emotions.” For example, if you are exposed to negativity, then you receive negative vibes that may adversely affect your feelings. If you experience positive input, you tend to be positive and happy. Unfortunately, a study on what is on Facebook revealed that what is shared is generally weighted on the side of negativity. Most disturbing. It shows that more people are feeling down because they are exposed to experiences that have a negative impact on their well-being. This could be why many teenagers are anxious or sad – some suffer from depression, while others have suicidal tendencies. One Teenage reader wrote to me stating: “Life is not worth living… everyone else is posting about their fabulous life. But not me! I hate my boring dumb life. I suffer from envy and am anxious because I feel left out. I want to end it all.” This teen is not alone. Another reader confessed, “I am depressed. I feel unwanted and useless. I am miserable after reading about other people’s exciting lives and the many interesting friends they have”. Teenage Facebook users are constantly exposed to either negative exposure or they can’t compete with the fabulous lives others claim to enjoy. Unfortunately, many believe everything they read and end up being miserable.

Armed with this knowledge, what can people do to overcome the negativity they are constantly exposed to, and the envy many experience? They can read good books, get a hobby, attend a course, participate in sports and games, learn to play a musical instrument and engage in activities that promote positive feelings. Select happy, inspiring movies and TV shows to balance the negative with the positive.

It is important to be positive. I have witnessed people’s reactions after viewing what may or may not be the truth on Facebook. I am sceptical because people often make their experiences sound interesting or entertaining by adding extra details

that are not true. I am not judging anyone. That is not my intention; I am merely reporting what is out there. Recently, I was with a friend who was using Photoshop. By the time she finished, she looked nothing like the photo she posted. She managed to fool herself and others, but if that’s what makes her happy, okay. What concerns me is that some readers admit to being depressed because “others look so beautiful”, and not them.

Please note: some people want to make themselves feel good; others want to make people feel envious. If you understand this, you will be better able to protect yourself from negative feelings. Take this example: One Sunday, I was with a friend when she got this SMS from a guy we both know: “I know you love champagne brunches – wish you were here!” He then kept bombarding her with messages, I suspect to make her envious at his good fortune. I told my friend I bet that he was probably bored, lonely, unhappy and sitting at home so he SMSed her to make her feel unhappy too. I asked if he sent any photos. “No, why?” she asked. I didn’t believe him because if you were at a champagne brunch, there is so much to eat, you wouldn’t have time to text continuously, especially when you are enjoying your champagne too. Being naughty and irritated by the constant interruptions, I said, “Tell him we are nearby and are joining him, so set two extra places at the table. He immediately responded – “Sorry, I have to rush off to a meeting”. I laughed and said, “No one who pays more than $100 for a champagne brunch would rush off to a meeting in half-an-hour.” Ha! Ha! Ha! Lie detected! How did I guess the truth? Simple – he had not bombarded her with photos, as he usually does. Poor guy, he suffers from low self-esteem. This proves anyone can claim anything. I’ve caught people circulating other people’s experiences as theirs. You’ll read about a girl who got caught claiming her best friend’s boyfriend was hers. Don’t believe everything you are exposed to on social media. Stay positive and be happy. Always here for you.

Fat & suicidal I have been an avid reader of your column for four years. Reading about other people’s problems and applying your advice to my situation was really helpful. Now I want to share my problem with you because I need personal help. I am desperate!

I am fat! ‘Realllllly fat!’ I have been teased and made fun of continuously about my weight since I was a little kid. Names like “Dumbo”, “Fatty”, “and “Gemok” (Malay for fat) ring in my ears. It is a nightmare. I thought I would get used to the name-calling but I found out that I will never get over it. It hurts so much more now that I am growing up. I have tried to lose weight but nothing works. I am 15 and really depressed. My family isn’t proud of me because of my bad grades. Mother calls me “useless”. As a result of the name-calling, poor grades and insults from mum, I have resorted to self-harm. My classmates found out and accused me of attention-seeking. Yes, I admit I seek attention. I want to know if someone cares, but I don’t want to be judged. I am judged and I am desperate! I engage in self-harm as a way to destress. Nothing seems to be working. I cry every now and then from frustration.

I can’t stop thinking about suicide. Please help me! I want to stop cutting myself and thinking about killing myself. I want all of this to STOP!!! From: Hurting Kelly: I’m so glad you decided to write to me. As a loyal fan, you should have written earlier so you would not be so distraught. Let’s not waste any time. Immediate things to do: 1. The first thing I want you to do is track down the October 2014 issue of Teenage.

After securing the issue, cut out the Dear Readers page and put it where you can refer to it often. This will be your security blanket, so to speak, to keep you centred. 2. Now for the hard part. If you have been overweight all your life, I don’t believe you can be the author of your own weight loss. You need professional help. Here’s what to do: a. Ask mother to take you to the doctor. Tell the doctor what you told me. Hold nothing back. The doctor will examine you and say if there is a medical reason behind your obesity, or if it is a food-related problem. b. If the doctor recommends that you be put in the care of a nutritionist, then listen carefully to what is suggested. Mother should be at this meeting because if special food and cooking methods are recommended, like no deep-fried food, only steamed or braised food to be eaten, then the rules must be followed to help you lose weight, keep the weight off, and attain a weight that is suitable for your height and body type. c. What needs to be done in the coming months – shedding weight will take time and a great deal of selfcontrol and great determination on your part. Swimming would be an excellent exercise as you embark on your weightloss journey. I am against running as it might compromise your joints as the weight you carry at present needs to be shed. Besides, your heart will be sorely strained. Walking is also an excellent exercise. Walking with family and/or friends along the beach, or at a nearby park is preferable to walking on the street and breathing in all those fumes. d. Mother could be frustrated and doesn’t know how to help and it could be why she lashes out at you. Maybe this whole new way of handling your

I can’t stop thinking about suicide. problem, as I have outlined, might help heal wounds. Tell mother you would very much appreciate it if she could help you deal with your weight-loss regime. Say you need and would be grateful for her support. You could speak to the school counsellor and ask her to tell mother you need her help and support to shed unwanted unhealthy pounds. Schools are concerned about overweight kids and the authorities would be happy to help you get mother’s help. e. The doctor will have to be told about the self-harm issue. You are not attention-seeking when you engage in self-harm. It is a cry for help. Not everyone will understand this. Please tell the doctor everything you told me and add anything you left out when writing to me. The doctor might suggest counselling in view of your self-harm activities. You have realised that engaging in self-harm doesn’t help, as it doesn’t address the real problem. You need direction. Please trust the counsellor, share your frustration and fears. You need to get everything off your chest so you can create a new you. f. The future – you will no longer feel helpless as you now have a plan. Without a plan, it was difficult to know where to begin. Follow whatever programme is mapped out for you by the medical professionals. Write a private letter to me. Address it to Dear Kelly c/o Ms Emmeline Lee (the address is in a Box in the Dear Readers page). I want to know how you are doing. I care. Best wishes.
