For gym-worthy #Fitspo Follow @kayla_itsines This fit lady has a whopping 5.7 million followers, and it’s all thanks to her successful Bikini Body Guide that fans swear by for a trim and shapely figure. No matter your size (or gender), her impactful workouts promise results in just 12 weeks! Just look at the before and after shots of some of her followers and you’ll be pumped up to get moving, stat. We love how Kayla encourages a healthy and toned physique by leading by example; you won’t see any crash diets or negative influences in her feed.

For that dash of creative whimsy Follow @songdancedesign

For motivational perk-me-ups

Nothing sparks one’s desire to create like scrolling through gorgeous artwork will. Andrea Fairservice, the artist behind @songdancedesign, specialises in watercolour paintings of plants, crystals and scenery, and she occasionally changes things up with picturesque snaps of nature and her travels. Her feed always makes us want to pick up a paintbrush or camera to create pretty works! Bonus: the self-professed bunny lover sometimes shares pictures of her cute rabbit that’ll make your day a whole lot better.

Keeping an upbeat outlook 24/7 seems nearly impossible, but life coach Cara Alwill Leyba, who’s also the author of five self-help books, is doing a pretty good job. Aside from a penchant of posting philosophical and motivational Tumblr-worthy quotes from herself and other inspiring women, Cara also dishes out useful advice and confidence tips that anyone (not just girls) can benefit from.

For curbing those junk food cravings Follow @sadhanakitchen Whoever thought veggies were unappealing haven’t seen this Instagram account. Based in Sydney, Australia, Sadhana Kitchen serves up organic, plantbased food that are often gluten- and sugar-free. While we aren’t exactly able to visit this vegan foodie paradise, looking at their vibrant and fresh dishes always serves as inspiration to eat clean (as much as we possibly can) at every meal.

For viewing the world through different perspectives Follow @kaylapotterbaum As you scroll through the American photographer’s feed, one of your first questions will undoubtedly be “Wow, do these places really exist?” While most touristy shots are rather predictable, her portraits tend to fill viewers with wonderment, surrealness and wanderlust, reminding us that the world is much bigger than we think. Train yourself to see the world through Michaela’s eyes and you’ll experience so much more in return!

For days WHEN you need extra warmth Follow @wongfuphil Browsing his photos always makes us appreciate our loved ones more. We adore his charming selfdeprecating humour, and the down-to-earth YouTube star isn’t stingy about letting us in on his life as well. On his account, the co-founder of Wong Fu Productions often shares shots of his hangouts with famous pals like singer Wang Leehom and fellow top YouTubers including Ryan Higa, Anna Akana and Cassey Ho of Blogilates. You’ll see loving snaps of his family too – his posts of his parents and little nephews are always aww-inspiring!

Beauty

set to Impress

Nail your dream job with these interview-ready makeup looks from the runway. By CHEW HUI LING

TOO FACED Brow Quickie Brush-On Waterproof Brow Fiber Gel, $35 A pair of wellgroomed brows makes you look polished and put-together. Make sure to tweeze any stray hairs beforehand so your arch won’t look messy.

IT Cosmetics Hello Lashes 5-in-1 Mascara, $42 Tired peepers are a no-no; a few coats of mascara is all you need to wake up your look. Opt for a waterproof, long-lasting formula – you don’t wanna show up with raccoon eyes!

shu uemura Tint In Balm in Sugar Coral, $42 A tinted balm gives your lips a hint of colour while ensuring a highshine finish that lasts all day. Tip: the night before your interview, exfoliate lips with a scrub and slap on a generous coat of lip balmto avoid a chapped pout.

3CE Barbapapa Blush Cushion in Pink, $27 Skip the bronzer and dust on a touch of blush for that healthy flush. Go for a sheer coral hue that doesn’t overpower the rest of your makeup.

Natural Beauty Look professional yet chic in this au naturel look. Stick to neutral eyeshadow shades and skip the thick eyeliner. Instead, play up the lashes to perk up your eyes without going OTT. Throw up your hair into a low bun to prevent yourself from nervously twiddling your strands, and you’re good to go!

NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation, $75

Sephora Collection Colorful Shadow & Liner in Call Girl, $19 If you have to choose one feature to focus on, we’d recommend accentuating your eyes with an ever-so-slight flick of colour across your lids. It’s a subtle way to assert your girl boss personality without being too in your face.

Burt’s Bees Lipstick in Nile Nude, $26 Show ‘em that you mean business with a matte, peachy nude that best complements your skin tone.

Kat Von D Lock-It Featherweight Primer, $52 A good primer is a must for ensuring your makeup doesn’t slide off your face. This fast-absorbing formula preps skin for longwear foundation while keeping it hydrated.

Hourglass Hidden Corrective Concealer, $53

MAKE UP FOR EVER Water Blend Foundation, $72 Less is more when it comes to your base. Reach for a lightweight formula that’ll give you a fresh, natural-looking conplexion sans the cakiness.

Bold Business This edgy look is bound to make an impression at your interview. For those with darker skin tones, win a few style points with a daring swipe of bright liner/ shadow – a minimal amount will do the trick. Keep the rest of your makeup neutral and finish off your understated look with a rosy lippie.

Bring The

Boys Out

It’s a battle of the boy bands – which group’s comeback fared the best this season? By Chew Hui Ling

The Just when you think you’ve seen it all from ’90s Cool Kids SHINee, the boy band puts out yet another SHINEE – 1 of 1 stunning comeback. These K-pop chameleons know how to set themselves apart with each release and they’ve done just that with an old school look and sound. A throwback to the ’90s, 1 of 1 is given a nostalgic kick infused with hip-hop and urban dance-pop undertones, yet it has the classic SHINee flair written all over it. Not everyone can pull off such a concept, but these guys knock it out of the park with every track. It was a pity Onew had to sit out on some of the choreography portions, but we hope he’s recovering well! PUT ON REPEAT:

#1 ‘1 of 1’

#2 ‘Prism’

#3 ‘Shift’

The Fallen Angels BTS – Wings

Did we expect anything less from BTS? Their sophomore studio effort not only scored an all-kill in Korea, it also dominated the top slots on over 90 charts across the world, which is an incredible feat for these rising powerhouses. Wings is a meaty hotchpotch of genres from the dark to the ambient to the catchy, and although some might nitpick that it isn’t their usual “style”, we like how it’s never predictable and keeps us entranced the whole way through. And unlike their previous records, this 15-track album also consists of solo tracks, allowing the members to express their individuality. Particularly memorable was J-Hope’s ‘MAMA’, which is an emotional tribute to his mother who “floated a paper boat of dream for me” despite his dad’s initial disapproval of his idol dreams. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate the music video masterpiece that is ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’? PUT ON REPEAT:

#1 ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’ #2 ‘21st Century Girls’ #3 ‘Am I Wrong’

The melodramatic gang INFINITE – Infinite Only

PUT ON REPEAT:

#1 ‘The Eye’ #2 ‘Air’ #3 ‘Zero’

Setting up INFINITE territory right from the get-go, their sixth mini album stays true to the their signature formula of retro-orchestral, blockbuster jams while experimenting with hints of EDM and dubstep breaks. Nearly every song sounds like a hit, but the standout piece for us is indisputedly ‘One Day’, a rock ballad which features songwriting credits from Hoya and Dongwoo. There’s absolutely no filler in the seven-track record, which can easily (and sadly) fly by under 30 minutes. A rule of thumb: if an album leaves you wanting more, then consider its job done – Infinite Only is proof.

The street fighters From boys next door to downright badass hotties, it seems like GOT7 have well and truly discovered their sound with a collection of self-produced tracks that makes up their most tumultuous record ever. The 13-track Turbulence sounds nothing like the slick pop elements on their last EP Departure – instead, the members take us on a sonic ride of hard-hitting tempos and club-banging beats while showcasing their potential as singersongwriters. We’d go as far as to say it’s their best album yet, but we get the feeling a trilogy to the Flight Log series may be on the horizon and it’s sure to arrive with a bang.

GOT7 – Flight Log: Turbulence

Everyone in Singapore would’ve heard of Nathan Hartono by now; our very own Teenage Iconturned-global breakout star has done us all proud by coming in second on Sing!China. He mightn’t have taken home the gold, but this is just the beginning – the 25-year-old already has love calls from various companies and is set to bring his career to greater heights. Before that, Nathan will be treating fans to new music at the end of the year so stay tuned for that!

Apart from being a Teenage Gorgeous You! 2016 finalist, Leon Markcus’s talent for churning out indie gems is reason enough to check him out, stat. A new breed of eight-bit inspired earworms, societal-fueled lyrics and glitzy Tumblr aesthetics, the 20-year-old’s debut EP Mannequin positions him as one of music’s brightest young things to watch. Keep a lookout for his upcoming music video ‘Killer Clown’, a creepy-cool retelling of his inner struggles living in a dysfunctional family. Just… don’t watch it at night.

Another future star in the making, Jude Young is an up-and-coming artiste who caught our attention with his unique blend of sweet pop tunes and poignant lyricism. Always armed with an acoustic guitar, the 22-year-old’s gearing up for the launch of his upcoming EP by releasing a music video for his new single ‘Hour’ – a track inspired by past memories that’s as evocative as it is addictive.

We’ve got a new cool kid on the block – Jasmine Sokko’s her name and she’s here to stay. It’s beautiful, sad, yet uplifting all at once.

Wish Upon A Star boy forget ‘can’t feel my face’ – the weeknd’s upcoming album Starboy might just be everything you’ve ever wished for. By Chew Hui Ling

Before you go all Margot Robbie on us, we’ll just put it out there: he ain’t no imposter (context: watch The Weeknd, Kenan Thompson and Margot Robbie on Saturday Night Live)! It’s indeed The Weeknd, looking more polished than ever after chopping off his signature dreadlocked ‘do. We kinda miss his mop now that it’s gone, but hey, out with the old and in with the new! He ain’t just getting a haircut though; in the chilling MV of ‘Starboy’, we see him literally saying R.I.P to his Beauty Behind The Madness era self and unleashing a new pop identity in the form of an “aggressive, but still sexy” production. Goodbye The Weeknd, hello Starboy!

‘Starboy’ is a slick club banger from the get-go, but if you squint between the lines, you’d have noticed a timely namedrop that pays homage to the Oscar-winning actor’s 1994 film: “Let a n***a Brad Pitt, Legend of the Fall took the year like a bandit”. The reference may seem out of nowhere, but it’s questionable how the track came out at the same time news broke about Brad Pitt’s pending divorce with Angelina Jolie. Well, coincidence or not, it’s still a killer track!

64

We’re all familiar with The Weeknd’s penchant for the dark and brooding, but ‘Starboy’ delivers the hardest shots of truth. “I come alive in the fall time, no competition I don’t really listen,” he croons, boasting about his Starboy (Jamaican slang for ‘celebrity’) status in his trademark moody vocals. Then comes the second single ‘False Alarm’, a gritty up-tempo tune where he speaks of a woman “all red dress with the devil eyes, so obsessed with the camera lights”. Other NSFW lyrics aside, we get a glimpse of The Weeknd’s personal chaos underneath the glitz and glamour. These aren’t exactly the kind of songs for everyone, but let’s face it, every pop culture fan on the planet will want to hear it anyway.

Photo: UNIVERSAL MUSIC SINGAPORE

“I

think it’ll be the best sounding album I’ve ever done,” says the ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ hit-maker. We have no doubt about that – upon releasing the music video for ‘Starboy’ as a buildup to his upcoming record, it has already racked up more than 30 million views in a week while earworming its way up the charts. As we wait for the full album to drop on 25 November, we give you three reasons why you should look forward to The Weeknd’s newest effort.

You’re at a crossroads

Congrats! You’ve got everything all mapped out and you know exactly when to bring your A game. You may not have the most perfect life, but what matters is that you find joy in what you love and create a sense of fulfillment out of that. Once in a while, challenge yourself to go beyond your limits so you can constantly outdo yourself. Sign up for that Pilates class you’ve been eyeing, go on that adventure you’ve been pseudo-planning for years, or even pick up a new language you’re interested in – you’ll be surprised at what you’re capable of.

There’s still a long way to go, but you’re getting there! Treat it as an incubation period where you can really take the time to experience the world and reconnect with yourself. Whether it’s a day trip to the beach or a weekend tropical getaway, find inspiration in the attractions you visit, signs on the road, people you meet on the streets. Who knows, the key to finding yourself may very well be in a random stranger! Trust us, you’ll come back with a fresher perspective and a better sense of self.

Yikes, it seems like the quarter life crisis came earlier than expected... You fail to see a purpose in life and have yet to find something that’s worth pursuing, but that’s okay. It’s a big decision to make and things may not work out as planned, but think of each experience as a learning opportunity. For a start, spend more time focusing on yourself and less time fretting about others’ expectations. You have the dream; all that’s left for you to do is to be confident and take the leap!

It’s not an easy task, but hey, every successful person started from the ground up, so take it one step at a time!

step up

your prep game So you got yourself an interview slot. Congrats! Now get ready with these tips. By yuen yi ying

Plan to Show Up Early

Read Up On the Company

Anyone who’s ever been to an interview knows that somehow, prep time always seems to take twice as long. After all, it’s only natural that you want to put forward the best impression. To prevent a mad scramble on the day itself, prepare as much as you can in advance. Get your clothes ready, your files neatly tucked in your bag and your wallet and keys handy. Also, plan your transportation route, and give yourself at least half an hour of buffer time in case you can’t locate the venue. This will also give you time to collect your thoughts and calm down so you can answer the questions coherently. Don’t count on getting a cab, which may not be available even if you call for one. If you reach early, hang around until just ten minutes prior to your appointment before speaking to a receptionist or calling the interviewer. After all, you don’t want to annoy the interviewer unnecessarily by disrupting his or her earlier plans.

It might seem like the most obvious thing to do, but very curiously, interviewees still show up for appointments not knowing anything about the company they intend to work for, including the brand’s values, products, bestsellers or services. Asking what you know about the company is often one of the first questions, and if you stumble here, it’s quite likely that the person will be put off. Another good thing to research: who are the company’s competitors, and what are their strengths and weaknesses?

74

What to put in your portfolio “you were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.” – zig ziglar, author

A portfolio shows what you’re capable of, so here’s how to present yourself in the best light!

• If you’re going for a research or writing job, add samples of essays or studies you’ve done, and if any of them have been published, you’d definitely want to put in those clippings.

• For design gigs, add your best

Bring Your Own Stationery

Think of Some Good Ideas

Dress Appropriately

Employers often ask interviewees to fill in forms, or they might even ask you to do a written assessment. It’s awkward when you have to ask the interviewer for a pen or paper. On the contrary, if you come prepped – complete with a notebook and your own stationery – you’ll impress the assessor with your preparedness, foresight, and readiness to work.

If you really want to wow the interviewer, prep at least a couple good pitches or business ideas for the company. You might be asked for suggestions, and if you already have a few good ones handy, you’ll seem more enthusiastic for the job. If you have time before the interview, run the ideas by a few family members or friends first. You don’t want to be sharing your pitches only to realise how cheesy or unfeasible they might sound. Also, try to come up with some thoughtful questions for the interviewer, it’ll show you’re engaged and informed. Just don’t ask about pay or holidays. Let them bring those up before you discuss them further.

You might have been told that you don’t want to outdress the interviewer. That’s true, to a certain extent. You don’t want to be wearing a suit when the person is wearing a polo tee, but you definitely want to err on the side of caution and look more formal than underdressed. To help you pick out your outfit for the day, it would be good if you can observe how people in the workplace dress, and choose something similar. However, if you’ll be working in a corporate office, you can’t go wrong showing up in a smart shirt and pants combo, complete with a suit and tie. For ladies, a well-tailored dress is always a good option. Try to pick out a second outfit if possible, in case of unfortunate accidents like dropping toothpaste or splashing coffee onto your clothes in your rush to hurry out the door.

75

pieces in a variety of styles to show your versatility. If you’re strong at a particular look, you can add a few more of those in to play up your strength.

• If you’re a performer, you’ll want to list all the shows you’ve been in, as well as compile a highlight reel of all your top moments.

• If you’re wondering how to arrange your folder, start with your strongest works first, and always end with a memorable piece.

• Won some awards? Add those to the file. CCA records are also good for showcasing some of your interests.

• Put in all your testimonials, as interviewers love to read these. Pick the ones that are most relevant to your job and place those in front.

• Good samples are very important, but so is presentation. Even if you have the best samples, a poorly compiled portfolio may make your work look sloppy. On the other hand, a professional-looking portfolio could give you an edge over applicants with better experience. For works that can fit in an A4 folder, a smart-looking binder with plastic sleeves allow the interviewer to flip back and forth easily while keeping your samples clean and crease-free.

the missing one “At first, all of my friends had dates for prom, except me. But two weeks before the big night, a boy finally asked me out. When my friends and I were getting ready on the day itself, we were all very giggly and couldn’t wait to meet our dates, all decked out in amazing dresses. But when we reached the ballroom, my date was nowhere in sight. Even after calling and texting him, he was absent for the whole night. I was devastated and was crying alone in the washroom. But my friends found me and they were determined to give me the best prom night, with or without a date. They ditched their own dates, fixed my makeup, and we spent the rest of the night dancing on our own! Who needs boys when you have awesome friends like this?”

pick a date Now about that prom date… If your crush doesn’t seem to be making a move despite the many hints you’ve dropped, you could try asking him/her out instead of waiting around. But if you’re not planning to have a date, don’t feel embarrassed about going stag. While your pals are busy dealing with daterelated drama, you can have a blast without anything to worry about. Go on and rock the dance floor!

find the dress You’re gonna have to do a lot of Pinterest-pinning for this, but that’s part of the fun, right? Our advice: whether you’re going for an elegant gown or a cute party frock, find a versatile piece that doesn’t break the bank and yet make a statement. Pop over to our Lookbook section (p.30) for inspiration!

Head-To-Toe Prep The next step is to make sure you’re looking your best: give your tresses some R&R, have your brows threaded, get yourself a nice mani, etc. Treating yourself to a mask every week leading up to prom will also give you a brighter complexion.

pack your purse Prom is an evening-long affair, so make sure to pack essentials like blotting papers, compact powders and a long-lasting lippie. Also, don’t forget to pop a few safety pins, some dental floss and a packet of mints to play it safe. Check out p.82 for more prom disasters and how to avoid ‘em.

hit the after-party The party doesn’t stop at prom! Head out with your mates to a midnight movie, gather your girlfriends for a sleepover, or simply reminiscence about the good times over a late-night supper. Most importantly, make it a night to remember.

DearKelly Dear readers,

Happy holidays! Most of you have worked hard and deserve some fun! Fun is well and good but make sure you don’t do anything that will get you into trouble. Let’s review some holiday activities:

Family vacation Those going on a family vacation should go online and learn everything about their destination(s). It heightens one’s interest. Don’t forget to take photos you could caption and share with friends.

Holiday in Singapore Here are some options:

1

Walk down Orchard Road

– enjoy the Christmas light-up with family and friends. Check the newspapers and note on which days, at what time and where performances have been scheduled. Hop on a double-decker bus, go to the top deck and view the lights from above. It is magical.

other musical instruments out and prepare song sheets for a sing-a-long.

6

– those who are creative might like to create their own greeting cards and gift tags. Getting together with a friend or friends would be such fun. You can use a variety of recycled material – buttons, bits of ribbon, different types of paper and cloth, even leaves, seeds, sweet and chocolate wrappers, etc. Or visit the $2 shop and pick up craft stuff at little cost.

7 8

Read a good book or watch a good movie – it would be a

worthwhile experience.

Local attractions – check out what is featured at the museums, Botanic Gardens, Singapore Zoo and other places of interest.

9

3 4

Local events – the newspapers will highlight ‘What’s On’. There is always something interesting going on.

Fun at home – invite some friends to your house, with your parents’ permission, and have a potluck party, which means everyone brings something so the expense is shared. You can include singing, even dancing, if space permits.

5

Picnic in the park – this can be fun as it is in Australia and other European countries I have visited. Everyone brings their own food and drinks or a potluck meal is co-ordinated. Music is a must so get your guitars and

Mercy mission – visit a lonely

or aged relative, family friend or neighbour. You could take along a card you made and ask mum for permission to prepare a small food hamper. You will bring happiness and get satisfaction from performing a good deed.

2

Gardens by the Bay – another interesting Christmas destination. Take photos that you can later make into creative Christmas and New Year cards. Personalise your greeting with a personal text.

Put your creativity to the test

Let’s review the Don’ts on your holiday list:

1

Avoid alcohol – No underage drinking – caution! Even if you have attained the legal drinking age, avoid getting drunk. Girls have experienced horrendous experiences while under the influence of liquor. Many have written to me bemoaning the fact they engaged in sexual activities when drunk and lost their virginity to a stranger. Some contracted a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and in one case, a girl got pregnant as the guy or guys who had sex with her didn’t use a condom. These girls had no recollection of what happened. Getting drunk is not a smart move.

2

No smoking – many teens are introduced to smoking during the holidays. Say “No!” to this disgusting

86

habit. Smoking is not cool. Looking upon a cigarette as a cancer stick might help. Sadly, even the horrendous photo on each box doesn’t deter some foolhardy people.

3

Need for adult supervision – girls pay attention:

a) No going to your boyfriend’s house if there is no adult supervision. See what happened to the girl in the letters entitled: Raped After Lying To Mum.

b) Don’t accept invitations to chalets and parties where there is no adult supervision.

4

Dating strangers – never go on a solo date with someone you met casually at a function. Go on a double date and make sure the other couple are your friends.

5

Feeling bored – if you are bored,

call a friend, watch TV or read a book. Do not go online and chat up strangers. The results are often devastating.

Note: Avoid risky behaviour that could result in lifelong negative consequences. Always hang out with people you know and even then look after yourself and your friends. Remember, even friends can let you down.

Always here for you,

Sis sneaks out

at night Dear Kelly, I have no one to confide in and am very worried because my sis,

who is 14, sneaks out when everyone is asleep. Mum and dad sleep upstairs so only I could hear her door open, and I would peek out from my room. I see her all dressed up in sexy clothes, with makeup, high heels and lots of necklaces and rings. My mum doesn’t allow her to wear makeup and high heels. She must be hiding these outfits and stuff from us. I have not told her I know what she is doing. I am 11 and am afraid of my sis, as she is not friendly towards me though I am nice to her. She often scolds me

and calls me “Idiot”. This is strange because I do very well in my lessons and am one of the top students in class. She often fails and mum and dad ground her. She is rude to our parents and ill-treats the maid, threatening to tell mum and dad she is rude. All lies of course. My sis also smokes after school with her friends at a nearby block. She doesn’t know that I know.

I am very worried. What if something bad happens to her? I will feel very guilty for keeping quiet but I am afraid of her and what she might do to me if I betray her. Please give me advice. Thanks a lot. From: Worried

Kelly: You are a lovely girl with a loving heart. To worry so about a sister who is mean to you, insults you, rejects your

87

friendship and makes you afraid of her. This is not the way for siblings to behave towards each other. Basically, she calls you “Idiot” because she is jealous of your academic success.

I agree there is need for worry. Nobody knows where she is going and with whom, dressed like a young prostitute? Trotting off alone at night without informing anyone is very dangerous. Who knows what the people or person she is meeting might do to her? She might be drugged and raped. She is a minor and shouldn’t be allowed out at night on her own, as you know. My dear, please speak to your parents and ask them to watch out for her as she sneaks out of the house. Let them catch her. Tell your parents you will

never forgive yourself if something happened to her. Request that they don’t tell her your part in the trap. Confess you are afraid of her. Maybe it is time to inform your

parents that she “smokes after school with her friends at a nearby block”. She is an underage smoker. You have not betrayed her. You are informing your parents about her night activities because you care. I am proud of you. Your parents will be grateful to you for speaking out. Put your fears to rest. You are doing the right thing. You are a good and caring sister. Best wishes.

am i a Hi Kelly, it’s time to share my problem with you. You answer teenage problems so well, helping us over many hurdles but in a strict fashion. I like this. Since I entered secondary school, I began to hang out with the girl who sits beside me. It is convenient to be friends as we can do pair work together. She is intelligent and hardworking. We like the same books and are in the same CCA, so it seems natural that we hang out.

All this sounds nice and positive, but there is a big problem. I feel like a slave. My friend loves to give orders and acts like a princess. Let me tell you what happens everyday. We meet at the canteen before the bell rings.

We chat, but when the bell rings, she points to her bag and I am expected to carry it. She walks ahead carrying her file. I struggle with two bags and my file.

slave?

Kelly, suddenly it is as if my eyes have been opened. I keep asking myself: why am I being her slave? She doesn’t even thank me for what I do. It is as if she expects me to do these things. I feel foolish and dumb! Help me. I can’t take it any more. Sorry to bother you with this small matter.

Henceforth, when you have made it clear that it is: “Every man for himself”, please ignore any pleas of tiredness, loneliness, “don’t know how to buy food”, “enjoy your company while waiting for the bus”. She will have many devious ploys (cunning plans or actions to turn a situation to her own advantage) in her bag of tricks so you must harden your kind heart if you hope to bring about lasting change. Only you can decide

[From: Slave]

Kelly: If something negatively impacts your life it becomes a serious mater. I know how used and abused you feel. The good news – you are ready to do something about the situation, that’s why you wrote to me. It’s time to take charge of your life.

if you want to continue being “a slave”. I warn you that should you give in and act the slave again, she would have won and you can kiss freedom goodbye. Are you ready for some “strict” advice?

Here’s what to do: It’s so easy… just stop being your so-called friend’s slave. Why should you carry her bag, buy her food during recess and accompany her to the bus stop and wait until her bus arrives before you can walk home?

This is absolute rubbish! Let’s get down to some straight talk. My dear, all this

In the canteen during recess she hands me a $2 note and says what she wants to eat, claiming she will chope (reserve) a seat for us. I’d queue and it is inconvenient when we eat different things. I have to buy her food first, send it over then go and get my food. By the time I return, there is little time left before the bell rings.

happens because you allow it to happen. If she displays

After school, she expects me to wait at the bus stop until her bus arrives. Then only am I free to walk home.

She is obviously a master at manipulation.

this entitlement (the fact of having the right to something) attitude, it is because you meekly do her bidding. Let’s see how we can bring about immediate change.

Well here goes:

1

The next time she asks you to carry her bag, say: “Sorry, my bag is heavy so I can’t help you”.

2

And when recess time comes around, just buy your food, sit down and eat. If she asks you to get her food, say: “Sorry, I am hungry” then you start eating and just don’t look at her. If you look at her and she pouts or puts on a “poor thing” expression, you might get sucked into being her slave again.

3

When the dismissal bell rings, just say, “Excuse me, I have to hurry home to help mum. Have a good afternoon”. If you are spending the afternoon together, then things will be different.

The first thing I have to teach you is how to toughen up.

91

Sorry, but this girl is using you. I am curious to know her reaction when you stand up for yourself. Bet she’ll be livid and it may end in a quarrel and could signify the end of this unequal so-called friendship.

If it ends; so be it. You would have lost nothing. You would have gained your freedom and self-respect. Frankly, I wouldn’t consider such a blatant user friend material. If she stops talking to you, then you will know for sure that she only saw you as a slave. If she argues, cries,

begs, etc. just be firm. If she accepts the new you, then the friendship will be an equal partnership and it will grow stronger and you won’t be so resentful, frustrated and unhappy. The test will be worthwhile. I’m not worried for you.

You know the meaning of friendship and you will have no difficulty making friends. But for her, it is another matter. But that isn’t your concern. You hear me? No feeling sorry if she puts on an act. You are entitled to respect. Stand up for yourself now or you will go through life as a doormat; used and unappreciated by every manipulative person that comes along. I leave you with this thought. You were so bothered by the situation that you wrote to me. Understand you have rights and your dignity to protect. Be brave and strong. At least, if the so-called friendship ends, you will walk away with your dignity intact. I stress – your

problem is not a “small matter”. It has negatively affected your well-being. Glad you decided to ‘talk it out’ with me. Good luck.
