Ed's Note LOVING THIS MONTH:

Hi everyone,

Paper blotters are our saviour when it comes to maintaining shine-free skin, especially for those with oily complexion. Unfortunately, some parts of these paper blotters go unused and might cause makeup to slide. Enter blotterazzi by beautyblender ($37), a reusable cushion blotter that is shaped to blot oil from the hard-to-reach corners of your face without ruining your makeup. It’s made of the same beautyblender material that’s comfortable to use and doesn’t tug the skin. It even comes in a handy compact to keep it clean and hygienic!

Some of you might be preparing for

one of the biggest nights of your

life this month – we’re talking about prom that is. While my prom was

more than a decade ago, I still have

fond memories of the night, even though prepping for it seemed like a total nightmare. Here at Teenage,

we want you to enjoy your prom journey as much as possible, so we’ve done all the work for you! From prom makeup that’s

easy to recreate (p. 26), DIY hair

accessories (p.30) that’ll make you stand out, clutches that will carry all the essentials for prom

(p. 44) to averting prom disasters (p. 78) – everything you need to fully enjoy your prom is covered in this issue. Even if you’re not attending prom this year, check out the useful apps (p. 20) we recommend for beautifying your

pictures. Feel like a princess with this month’s Tuckshop (p. 16) where we share cafes that not only look good, but also serve some great grub as well. Prom not only celebrates the end of your secondary school years, but also

signifies the start of a new chapter

in your life. Embrace it with courage and optimism. Remember that you still have your friends!

Photo-editing apps are a dime a dozen, and all of ‘em have pretty similar functions. But basic options aside, these apps stand out because they don’t compromise on image quality and offer solid effects that’ll definitely up your Instagram game. And there’re plenty of free filters to play around with so you wouldn’t have to make any annoying in-app purchases to get a decent professionallooking photo either.

These apps are the cream of the crop – they are super awesome, with options to vanquish acne, change your skin tone, enlarge eyes, elongate legs and even increase one’s bust size (and cleavage) amongst others. While the latter two are too extreme in our book, we’re still totally alright with a lil’ bit of image improvement, as long as it’s not too drastic.

The Screen Titans

Attack on Titan leads Miura Haruma and Kiko Mizuhara are everywhere these days, but there’s not much we know about the actors themselves. We chat up the canon couple to find out what really goes on behind the cameras. By Chew Hui Ling

Mikasa left a deep impression on Miura Haruma

The question on every Eren x Mikasa shipper’s mind is probably their offscreen chemistry, and we have a sneaking suspicion that he gets on quite well with his leading lady – we’re right. “We are of the same age, so we talked casually about our visions. Through our conversations, I felt that she is a person who possesses a lot of passion in her work.” A rather safe response, but Haruma later added that Mizuhara trained eight hours a day for her role which “really left an impression on me”. We doubt their love line would ever spill over into real life, but these two are pretty cute together don’t you think? (Sorry GD.)

Miura Haruma’s skills are better than his stunt man

No stranger to intense fighting scenes (Gokusen and Crows Zero II, to name a few), Haruma chose to perform his own action sequences in Attack on Titan – swooping from building to building in maneuver gear, slicing down ‘invisible’ flesh-eating giants on set and all. Apparently, he was so impressive that the director ended up firing Eren’s stunt double. But it certainly wasn’t easy: “We had to be wired and equipped with a ring harness. Before the actual filming, I trained hard to ensure that my muscles could support me during these flying scenes.” Looks like his efforts paid off!

He’s unlike the characters he portrayed

You think there’d be at least one character from his 18-year portfolio (he’s only 25!) that’s close to his real personality, but the ‘veteran’ actor stated that there’s none so far. “I will try to discover the similarities with my actual self and construct a new identity from there. I portray it according to the needs of the story and the way it should be shown to the audience.” It’s a pity we don’t get to see his true self on screen, but hey, don’t we all love a mysterious guy?

He wishes to strike it big abroad

From a righteous delinquent to a tragic hero to a hacking prodigy, there isn’t any role Haruma hasn’t tried. Still, he’s always up for new challenges and hopes to “deliver different aspects of acting to everyone” in 2016. He also brought up his ambitions of venturing overseas if there’s an opportunity, which is definitely something worth anticipating for. We can totally attest to his language skills – have you seen the dude flaunting his Mandarin?

I

f you haven’t already heard of Attack on Titan, then the rock you’ve been living under must be pretty massive. After a wildly successful 17-volume (and counting) manga and 25-episode anime, the franchise debuted a live action Attack on Titan blockbuster that, very aptly, devoured the box office. Adding on to the fanfare is its solid ensemble of young blood – with Miura Haruma and Kiko Mizuhara taking the helm as Eren Yeager and Mikasa Ackerman respectively. If that’s not enough #EreMika for you, read on for our lil’ chat with the duo where they talk deep stuff and sing praises about each other.

She’s an advocate of female empowerment

As a character who’s practically ready to take charge from page one, Mikasa is the atypical female heroine all girls look up to – smart, capable and highly protective. While Kiko Mizuhara doesn’t think that they’re alike, she very much resonates to Mikasa’s side of femininity. “The strength of Mikasa is not her ability to defend herself, but the heart to protect her loved ones like how a mother would protect her child,” Mizuhara explains.

Kiko Mizuhara

“As a female, I understand and feel it completely.”

There are no fashion rules in her book

If you’re an avid follower of the model, you’d have realised that this style chameleon is one that doesn’t comply with the norms. “I enjoy experimenting with different styles,” she says. “I don’t really get inspiration from anyone, I just wear the clothes I like depending on my mood and the day itself.” A Mizuhara-approved tip: To steal her style, flattering silhouettes like turtlenecks and miniskirts are the way to go.

Mizuhara’s advice to her 15-year-old self…

You may be surprised to learn of her background, but the bred-in-Japan Mizuhara is actually of American/Korean descent. Admittedly, it takes more than just fluency in her core languages to be a truly international star. “I would advise [my 15-year-old self] to learn more things at an earlier stage. English is important, but being able to speak in Mandarin and Korean would open up a lot more opportunities for me.” The actress has

57

been diligently picking up Mandarin ever since – guess it’s safe to say our Attack on Titan leads are one step closer to entering the Chinese cinema!

She memorises lines in the bathtub?

Earlier this year, the multi-hyphenate landed her first lead role in Kokoro ga Pokitto ne, a rom-com drama revolving around a group of psychologically-ill adults. It’s already a lifelong struggle for actors to master their lines, let alone someone with such little experience – just imagine having to memorise 32 pages worth of complex monologues! “I’ve tried everything, I read the script aloud and even took it with me to the bathtub!” she recalls. “[There was a scene that] had to be done in one take. We’d have to do it all over again if someone made a mistake, thus we put our utmost concentration into it.” Despite the difficulties, this experience indeed helped her to gain more confidence: “I wouldn’t be afraid even if I were to receive a long script again!” Speaking about her future goals, Mizuhara states that she’d want to “act in a movie that would be able touch the hearts of all the people who watched it”. We’re certainly looking forward to her performance!

We Have A

Prom-blem The top eight infamous #PromFails, plus how to solve them all before the big day. By Chew Hui Ling

Hair-Raising Horror

#SociallyAwkwardProblems

When you get a fresh hairdo right before prom, but it ends up looking more like a… don’t. We’ve all been there: going all out for a drastic cut, only to find that you’ve made a huge mistake after spending hours in the salon. But the damage is already done.

When you engage in a pseudoromantic slow dance with your partner and you have no idea what to talk about. It doesn’t even matter if the other party’s a crush, a friend or a complete stranger…

The fix: Chill, it may not be beyond repair. A little heat styling, some hair spray and glam accessories (psst, check out our DIY head pieces on page 30!) can make your tresses look desirable in an instant. And if all else fails, you can always braid those locks or throw it up into a cute bun.

The fix: It’s rare for the playlist at prom to be all mellow and jazzy unless you’re at a posh venue, but don’t rule out the possibility. Try to get them talk about themselves and manoeuvre the conversation accordingly. But if there’s zero chemistry and the chat stopped after “What’s your name?”, simply make eye contact with a friend across the room and silently ask for SOS.

Expectation vs Reality When you finally muster up enough courage to pop the question in the flashiest way possible – sometimes they go according to plan, but most of the time… they do not. The worst case scenario: he/she rejecting you flat-out in front of everyone.

The fix: Play it cool. What are the chances you’ll end up dating this person anyway? Whatever you do, never air your grievances on social media – you’ll only invite gossip and not support. Plus this socalled ‘promposal’ is getting too weird lately, just ask people out the good ol’ fashioned way!

When the dress you ordered online came in the mailbox and it looked nothing like what you pictured, despite the hefty amount of cash you forked out. And you might have to shell out even more for alterations at the tailor…

The fix: While the most foolproof method is to buy it off the rack, we recommend going the DIY route if you’re short on time. Dig through your closet for hand-me-downs or garments that have yet to seen the daylight. With a bit of creativity, you can refashion these pieces into a brand new outfit! There are tons of cool tutorials from YouTube stars like LaurDIY, Amy Phan and ThreadBanger too.

In The Dumps

Fashion Fiascos

When your date dumps you the day before prom and everyone else already has partners. We won’t judge you if you choose the Reese Witherspoon tactic of having your dad (you read that right) as your backup date, but for those who need more studentfriendly alternatives…

When you fall victim to wardrobe malfunctions like a broken heel, stained dresses, and ripped hems. An infamous tale we’ve heard is of a prom queen wannabe who stepped on her dress and fell flat on her face as soon as she walks in the door, breaking both her heel and her ankle in the process. Whoops.

The fix:

The fix:

Bribe your friend from another school to come with you. Who knows, this might just be the meeting point for his/her future beau! It’s a win-win for the both of you, and it will be more fun since you don’t have to worry about impressing your partner or them getting bored on the sidelines. Let’s not forget, prom is all about having fun with your besties!

To avoid the same fate as the poor girl, make sure you have all the necessities you need in your clutch: stain removing pads, fashion tapes, plasters and plenty of safety pins. Pack a pair of rollup ballet flats in your bag in your bag if you must – they’re not as fancy, but you can count on these to get you the through the night in comfort.

“It was a chain of bad luck. I went to sleep feeling psyched, only to wake up with period cramps. Just when I was about to give my date a heads-up for my impending mood swings, he texted me that he fell sick so I had to go stag... But it turned out to be a blast anyway, I made new friends and had just as much fun!” – Kamille Panlaqui, Business Executive

Who’s The Copycat?

When you think you’re ready for all the gorgeous prom pics, but you’re forever caught off guard. As a result, you end up with a million unflattering photos that you’ll want to burn to the ground. That, or your friends decide to be funny and photobomb you.

When you encounter the age-old calamity of showing up to prom in the same gown as another and ballroom bloodshed ensues. To make matters worse, your date might just mix you up with the other clone. Talk about double trouble!

The fix:

While there’s no sure-fire solution for this, you’re welcome to lay claim on your dress beforehand. Snapchat your fitting room adventures, tweet about your style preferences, show off your gown picks on Instagram. It’s a sneaky way to solicit feedback from your followers while broadcasting to the world that you called dibs on those duds.

What else can we say… embrace the shenanigans! A few years down the road, you’ll look back at these ‘unglam’ snaps and reminisce about the good times. Way more memorable than those flawlessly staged portraits of you and some random dude you haven’t talked to since, don’t you think?

The fix:

DearKelly Dear readers, I found a copy of The New Paper stuck in my door grill, and I read the note, “This would be of interest to Dear Kelly.” My neighbours know I am Kelly. I read a very disturbing news item. To say I am very sad would be an understatement.

The newspaper was dated Monday, July 27, 2015. This was what the distraught grandmother shared with the journalist Maureen Koh. She said,

“Talking to you is useless. My daughter is dead. My granddaughter is dead.” But she agreed to talk because she said what she shared could help prevent a similar tragedy. The tragedy began three hours after

her granddaughter got her

‘O’ Level results when the 16-year-old committed suicide. She scored distinctions in all subjects except for a ‘B’ in English and Math. The teen left a note: “Mum, I am sorry for being a disappointment. I should have done better. Dad I am sorry you won’t be able to walk me down the [church] aisle to give me away.” I can imagine the anguish this girl felt. Unfortunately, it was misplaced anguish. She should have turned to a counsellor or someone she respected and discussed the situation. Her results would have delighted many students. Her parents regularly quarrelled over the results of their daughter who was from a top school. The mum pushed the girl to excel; the dad wanted the girl left alone, as he felt very sorry for her. He asked the grandma to speak to his wife who would get angry and ask her mother not to interfere with how she brought up her child. The teen was “upset over the frequent fights”.

The mum challenged her daughter with, “How come so-and-so can do this and you cannot?” After the funeral, friends kept watch over the mum. A friend said, “She maintained a stoic front and admitted she would have been disappointed with her child’s academic performance.”

The father left the house a month after his daughter’s suicide. Apparently this broke the mother’s heart. The grandma said, “my daughter killed herself three months later.” The day before she committed suicide, she told her mother, “I shouldn’t have pressurised xiao mei in her studies.”

The grandma lives with the sadness of the double suicide and the fact that her son-in-law buckled under the double suicide and that he is now mentally unstable.

Potential suicide victims –

signs to look out for

• A dead giveaway is the distribution

of personal possessions • Showing little interest in favourite school and

• Feelings of

being a burden guilt and admitting to

• Feelings of shame and letting loved-ones down

family activities

• Withdrawing from family, schoolmates and friend

• Changes in behaviour – eating habits, sleeping habits, withdrawal from people

• An increasing inability

• Deep-seated feeling of hopelessness, depression

to focus and concentrate • Expressing feelings of worthlessness, feeling rejected

• Not taking an interest in one’s

appearance

• No interest in studies and no interest in the future

Note: Take teen talk of suicide seriously

What can be learnt from this triple tragedy?

1

If your parents have unrealistic

expectations, please speak to a teacher you respect. Parents whose kids had similar results as the girl who killed herself have said to me, “Miss, so sorry my daughter is so stupid”. The girl who did so well looked so sad. I do not allow this to go unchallenged. I have asked many unrealistic parents how they fared in their ‘O’ Levels. This injects a bit of realism in the situation.

2

If you feel you can’t cope with

unrealistic demands, tell your parents how you feel. They need

to know that you are doing your best. This comment is addressed to the top 15 per cent of the student body in Singapore.

3

If you feel upset after receiving

your results, and you want to give up or fear disappointing your parent(s), here’s what to do: Go to a relative or family friend and ask this person to accompany you home with your results. A third party might help cool down the situation. No matter what,

Suicide is not an option. Look, it is one exam and one set of results. You do NOT need to kill yourself.

4

If, as in this case, your parents

are quarrelling over your academic performance, it is time

to involve a counsellor. Everyone is an individual. No one should be compared to someone else’s kid. Someone needs to set parents straight before another tragedy like this hits the news. Always here for you.

No one wants me, I want to die! A

s a long time reader, I feel I should write to you instead of suffering in silence. Many times

I have climbed to the top floor of the neighbouring block and looked down. It would be so easy to end it all. Then

I remember the words you repeat often:

Suicide is not an option. And I return home, make a hot drink and go to my bedroom. I cry, whack my pillow and kick the carpet in frustration. Even though I feel like giving up, I try to hang on. I am a 15-year-old guy, I come from a good school and I do well in my lessons even though I am tempted to end it all. After two years of wanting to commit suicide, I confided in my best buddy who was sympathetic and said when things get bad, I should get permission to sleep over at his home and study together. He assured me his parents are fond of me since we have been best buds since primary school. Kelly, he said I should “contact you for an unbiased opinion.” That makes two of us. So here I am with my story. We were a pretty normal family. We did things together on weekends and dad would take my best buddy and I on camping trips. Both families have gone on weekend trips. The mums chat and make tasty meals, while the two dads, who are buddies, take us guys exploring, fishing and swimming.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Scorpio

Uh-oh! Trouble seems to be brewing between you and that special someone unless both of you work it out together ASAP – it takes two to tango after all. The road ahead will be challenging but love takes practice and patience. Remember to set aside your jealousy and leave communication lines open, it’ll get better after you talk things out.

(23 Oct – 21 Nov)

Sagittarius

(22 Nov – 21 Dec) You are shouldering too much weight this month, and it’s affecting your productivity and leadership. Take a step back and assess your commitments, learn how to delegate and let some of these things go before you grow weary. Taking a slow walk or practicing yoga can help clear your head. Alternatively, take a break and breathe in. It helps!

Capricorn

(22 Dec – 19 Jan) You might have some difficult decisions to make this month, but remember – only you can decide what’s best for you. Take control of the situation by remaining disciplined and cool-headed no matter what, and you’ll soon see a smoother path ahead of you. Bear with it for the storm will soon be over!

Aquarius

Pisces

(20 Jan – 18 Feb)

(19 Feb – 20 Mar)

Having a heated argument with someone dear to you has definitely affected your relationship with everyone else, but it isn’t the worst until loneliness kicks in. Make use of your good listening skills to hear them out – after all, it’s better to make peace than to make enemies.

Being understanding has always been your strongest trait, but dealing with people of different personalities can put you in a spot. Stop compromising your own feelings and start telling people what you think – stick to your guns and your loved ones will value the honesty.

Aries

Taurus

(21 Mar – 19 Apr)

(20 Apr – 20 May)

New and exciting opportunities are abound for you during the month of November, but don’t let negativity musk the enthusiasm and energy you exude. Stay positive and you will be able to take on any challenges head on. When in doubt, your loved ones will provide you with some muchneeded words of wisdom.

The wheel of good fortune is finally turning in your direction! Your dependability and practicality are particularly useful for the month of November and you’ll finally get to taste the fruits of your labour. Remember that the stress and hardship are only temporary – press on and you will be duly rewarded. Just think of the long list of things you could relax and enjoy doing after this!

Gemini

(21 May – 20 Jun) Being able to share ideas and adapt to various situations quickly has now opened a door to a great opportunity. Keep your eye on the prize and focus your energy on it before the chance slips away. Don’t forget – when in doubt, passion conquers all so let your talents shine! But do not let pride stand before you and hinder your progress.

Cancer

Leo

(21 Jun – 22 Jul)

(23 Jul – 22 Aug)

The virtuous will find joy while wrongdoers will find grief in their actions – simply put, there is nothing to be afraid of if you have nothing to hide. Seek support from family and close ones as they will be able to help you weather through troubles. Keep a low profile and the truth will present itself in time. After all, great things come to those who wait.

You will find yourself tempted to while your time away, but beware of the consequences. Procrastination will prove to be your downfall this month, so plan your hours wisely and finish up your work. Remember: “A man who procrastinates in his choosing will inevitably have his choice made for him by circumstance.” You don’t want that to happen to you right?

Virgo

(23 Aug – 22 Sep)

Your hardworking character has allowed you to reach amazing heights in the past month, but don’t forget to let loose once in a while. Ring up a friend who has been missing your company and set up a date to hang out – there is much to catch up on. Be it a trip to the museum or screaming your heads off at Universal Studios Singapore, it’s time to let your hair down!

Libra

(23 Sep – 22 Oct) Love is in the air! For singles who have been waiting for cupid to strike, you’ll be pleased to know that someone special has been plotting some moves as well. Keep an open mind, even if it’s not what you expect – you’ll be surprised at how much you can gain from giving.
