“LIFE IS EITHER A DARING ADVENTURE, OR NOTHING.”

LOVING THIS MONTH

– HELEN KELLER Soaking in the sights in the Big Apple.

Hi readers,

Hanging out with the team at Jeju.

This month, we’re getting into the holiday mood early with our travel theme. Get set to go on a stylish adventure with fashion and beauty tips, as well as a list of offthe-beaten track locales to discover. My favourite piece, ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark’ (p. 94), lists top haunted spots around the world to spend a night in. Reading it gave me the creeps yet got me excited. I always think it’s fun to be kept a little on the edge when you’re exploring. Unfortunately, my addiction to travel isn’t exactly pocket-friendly, so to help me save up, the team set me a one-day $10 challenge. It’s not hard, but I tend to spend on little things that bust the budget. So, I cheated a little, heading to Singapore Polytechnic where the money would stretch further with their affordable food and cool facilities to keep me busy. I really liked how SP has balanced work with play there’s a skate park in the middle of campus and even Xbox consoles at the library. Plus, all the popular eateries from Starbucks to Llaollao are here and at discounted prices! Check out how I spent my day in Out-Takes (p. 108). Inside, EXO fans will also go wild as we share top moments from their recent show and recap all the band’s highlights since their 2012 debut. We’re also giving you the latest lowdown on Super Junior, Running Man, flumpool, Jay Chou, Taylor Swift and more!

I’m not always diligent with sunscreen (*gasp!*), but the Skinfood Premium Tomato Whitening Line ($6.90$46.90) gives me a fresh start, brightening and hydrating to zap patchiness and dullness.

Mmerci Encore has some pretty great stuff, but I’m obsessed with their Glow Elixir ($32). The perfume infusion of blood orange, bergamot and rose geranium makes me feel like I’m at a spa all day.

Hope you have a super month ahead, the long break is almost here! Regards,

TOP TRAVEL APPS Download these on your phone, and never look like a lost tourist ever again. By Lee Jing Hui

If you’re a frequent traveller, you’re probably familiar with the feeling of looking at foreign transit maps and feeling lost. Fret not. AllSubway compiles comprehensive metro and light rail maps from more than 100 cities worldwide. All users have to do is pick a city from the list and click ‘Save’ to access it offline. How convenient! US$0.99, S$1.25 (App Store and Google Play)

WEATHERBUG

Unlike other run-ofthe-mill weather apps, WeatherBug brings you updates through live webcams. It’s built-in program, Spark, also turns your smartphones into a minute-by-minute lightning detector. Doubling as a social networking app, it lets users share photos of beautiful sceneries and weather around the world too. Amazing! Free (App Store and Google Play)

TRIPOMATIC Dying to visit a particular city but no idea how to go about planning it? Tripomatic lets you find and do research on popular attractions in over 400 destinations. Simply click on pics to read reviews. The app also helps you list your daily sightseeing activities and provides maps and plot distances between attractions, including the fastest routes to take. Free (App Store, Blackberry Worldand Google Play)

CITIES TALKING Cities Talking offers audiowalking tours with a twist: you’re totally in control! As soon as you approach a point of interest, the on-screen maps will trigger an audio clip providing information about a particular place. If you need to take a break, just pause the playback – you can always continue later. Unfortunately, the app covers only cities in Europe. But hey, you get to tour around without having to fork out money to engage a tour guide! US$10, S$12.50 (App Store, Blackberry World and Google Play)

LINE The calling and messaging program recently introduced a new feature, Translation Bot, which enables users to translate their messages from Chinese to Japanese, English to Japanese and English to Korean. All users have to do is to add the feature as a ‘friend’, then add it into a group chat for messages to be automatically translated. Don’t let language barriers stop you! GROOMING

BEFORE YOU BARE Feel comfortable in the latest trends with beauty tricks that will make you look flawless! By Johanna Teo

The weather in our sunny isle is perfect for crop tops and shorts. However, if you’re hiding away because of beauty flubs like cracked heels and bacne, here are some ways to avoid cramping your own style.

OPENTOED shoes/ SANDALS

Don’t have the misconception that dull and wrinkly feet only belong to senior citizens. We’ve seen loads of teenagers with ‘granny feet’! To avoid ruining the aesthetics of a gorgeous pair of shoes, slather on a deepconditioning moisturiser like the Skinfood Green Tea & Mint Foot Cream ($19.90). It softens the look of cracked heels and dry ankles. Plus, it’s non-greasy, so you won’t have to worry about slipping about in your heels. Troll toes are another no-no! Keep your nails trimmed and neat with the Japonesque Manicure Set ($44.20, BeautyBay) and for brownie points, prettify your look with the latest colours from the Nicole by OPI Roughles collection ($9.90 each, selected personal care stores). These hues compliment the beach perfectly, especially with the texturised sandy finish!

Elle Fanning puts her best foot forward.

Lastly, to avoid red and painful blisters from new shoes, apply Foot Glide ($17.90, personal care stores) to ensure comfy feet throughout your day!

Summery tops

We sometimes have a love/hate relationship with hot weather must-haves that bare all, especially those with cut outs. If you have chicken skin-like bumps (also known as keratosis pilaris) on your arms, slough them away with exfoliating cleansers like the Mario Badescu AHA Botanical Body Soap ($10.30, BeautyBay).

TRY THESE:

For those with bacne (there’s nothing to be ashamed of!), the T3 Body Wash ($22.50, personal care stores) will gently soothe, heal and prevent troubled skin. You can also tackle obstinate zits head on with the Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Blemish Gel ($10.55, personal care stores).

Emma Stone showing off her f lawless skin.

Tiered Flair top,$31.90, Elska

River Island Palm Print crop top, $29.90, Zalora

SHORTS Have you committed the beauty faux pas of revealing legs with grey-ish dry patches on them? Soap doesn’t always get rid of dirt and dead skin completely, so scrub your gams clean in the shower by exfoliating once a week with The Body Shop Wild Argan Oil Rough Scrub ($30.90). For a perfectly smooth finish, remove unsightly body hair with Veet Hair Removal Cream ($10.60, personal care stores), then pamper your pins with innisfree Green Tea Pure Body Lotion ($20), letting the moisturiser soak in for soft and glowing skin.

Lucy Hale’s getting leggy in her f loral shorts!

Don’t forget to protect your legs before stepping out. The Supergoop! Antioxidant-infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C ($27, www.luxola.com) will prevent uneven tanning while keeping your gams healthy with its cocktail of skin-loving ingredients.

E-NEWS

READY, GET SET, GO!

Running Man is one of the most epic variety shows ever, with each of its 200 over episodes cracking us up. Johanna Teo shares our picks of their top four most creative episodes!

Episode 150: Running Man Avengers Running Man featuring The Avengers? What’s not to love about that? The cast were shown to lead normal lives – Vet Kwang Soo rescued a giraffe, Rocker Ji Hyo performed with her band, and Chemist Suk Jin was trying to find a cure for his weird condition. And Jong Kook and Jae Suk were tasked as the team leaders who have to assemble their band of motley superheroes! After each squad earned their superpowers, they fight it out with their ‘enemies’ with an utter lack of teamwork…

Episode 82: Seven Spies For this episode, the cast members are led to believe that they are the only spy amongst the group, with guest Lee Da Hae being tasked to eliminate all of them. This leads to confusion and mayhem, with everyone trying to find out who is wiping out their teammates, while Da Hae weaves a web of manipulation to pit the cast against each other!

48 OCT 2014

Episode 130: Reincarnation

Time-travelling to year 1938, during the Japanese occupation of Korea, the crew’s mission is to find seven keys to unlock a mysterious chest. Puzzling happenings befall each member along the way, while Gary and Jong Kook face off in a bid to open the chest. Before the winner is revealed, the cast is transported back to modern times, where they realised that the chest was fake and they had to find the real one! The crew try to figure out who holds the keys, with a plot twist – all except one has been reincarnated as a different member, and only that one cast member has held onto his original identity, his memories and the knowledge of where the real chest of treasure lies!

Episode 60: The Tru-Gary Show Modelled after The Truman Show, Gary is a spy who has to eliminate the group before they collect all the pieces of a puzzle. Unknown to him, the cast already knows his ‘secret’, and their mission is to fool him into thinking they have been deceived. Gary is not supposed to find out until the actual episode airs! Thus, the team goes along with the plan, setting themselves up for easy elimination while Gary innocently takes them out one by one. However, something Gary does right at the end makes us think that he’s not so innocent after all…

he main cast of Running Man aren’t strangers to our sunny island, and five of the well-loved members are coming back for the Race Start Season Two tour! Although we’d love it if they came to ‘run’ in the streets of Singapore instead of purely having a fan-meet, we’re still really stoked that they’re coming at all. As we hype ourselves up by re-watching the episodes, here are some of their most notably creative episodes (in our opinion anyway)!

THOUGHTS WE HAD AT FLUMPOOL’S CONCERT After three electrifying shows here, what do we make of their fourth? Lee Jing Hui shares our experience.

M

arking their fifth anniversary, flumpool dropped by for their first solo concert here, and The Ground Theatre at *SCAPE was absolutely packed. Expectations were high, but the band definitely raised the bar with the members hitting all the right notes and holding their own onstage. Ahead, here’s what went through our minds during the show!

“THEIR SINCERITY IS TOUCHING!’’ Despite the language barrier, the band put in a lot of effort to communicate with fans. Bantering with the crowd and asking unscripted questions, they actually waited to hear the responses, which made us feel very cherished and made the concert seem more intimate. Guitarist Kazuki Sakai even felt comfortable enough to give an impromptu and solid performance of Frozen’s ‘Let It Go’, demonstrating that he too, can hold a tune. Together with bassist Genki Amakawa, they joined lead vocalist Ryuta in completing ‘Hydrangea’, a song that further showcased their versatile vocal ability. Needless to say, everyone went wild with excitement!

“GOOD JOB ON OUR FAVE SONGS!’’ Going after our hearts once more, the band launched into the Mandarin version of the slow and sweet ‘Akashi’, whose Chinese lyrics were penned by Taiwanese band Mayday. Although we’d hoped to hear the original Jap version, we were pleased with the effort Ryuta put in to get the pronunciation accurate, and he was absolutely spot on. The band also performed the Japanese translation of Mayday’s ‘OAOA’, which we thought sounded good and was incredibly fun. Keeping the treats coming, the group launched their brand new, unreleased Mandarin song, ‘Gu Du’, which Ryuta mentioned would soon be used as a theme song for an upcoming Chinese movie.

PHOTOS: ROCK RECORDS SINGAPORE

“THE CROWD IS TOTALLY NUTS.’’ The Jap band probably has some of the best fans in the world. Not only did the crowd happily jump and sing along to all the songs, they even sang the group’s ‘Taisetsu na Mono wa Kimi Igai ni Miataranakute’, instead of yelling “encore!”, to get the lads back onstage for more. The four members returned the love with two songs before giving deep 90-degree long bows to the audience and promising to come back. You know what? We wouldn’t have it any other way. OCT 2014

SCHOOL DAYS Celebs, they’re just like us! Find out what these stars were like back when they were students. By Rachel Yohannan LOUIS TOMLINSON

Kim Soo Hyun

Kim Soo Hyun

sure was a cheeky one (pun unintended)! “I once got suspended for a week for getting my bum out at a school p erformance of Grease,” he admits. Trust the one often hailed as the “funniest member of One Direction” to pull such antics on stage. Well, at least he knows how to have fun and not take things too seriously! We really hope he won’t try to pull that move off in future 1D concerts, though. Louis Tomlinson

KIM SOO HYUN admits he was “very mischievous” while schooling. “I would play pranks as a way to relieve stress”. In high school, he once set fire to 60 paper airplanes and threw them down to the first floor from his classroom on the fifth floor, blazing up a flower bed in the process. He had to kneel and beg for forgiveness from his teacher.

KYARY PAMYU PAMYU

claims she was just like any other schoolgirl. “I was a typical, simple high school student. I always [abided by] school rules and enjoyed Art the most.” But ‘typical’ as she was, that didn’t stop her from expressing herself through fashion by wearing a blonde wig to class, which led classmates to joke that she was like a foreign girl. Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

NAYA RIVERA was sure of her goals, but also had her fair share of struggles with self-image and fitting in with the crowd. Describing her high school days, she revealed she was “most like Artie and Rachel [from Glee]”. “I knew what I wanted, like Rachel, although I wasn’t as obnoxious. But like Artie, I was a nerd, always trying to fit in and get my hair to lie flat.”

THROWBACK BELLA THORNE

shows us that no difficulties are impossible to overcome if you put your mind to it. Diagnosed with dyslexia in second grade, she went to a special learning center and explains “they helped me so much, especially with reading, which I struggled with. I now read and write a grade ahead. And I’m really good at Literature and language.” Bella Thorne

MAX CHANGMIN (DBSK) was shy and never dated while in school. Looking at his dashing sharp features, that’s almost hard to believe, but we’re glad he focused on his studies instead. However, he cheekily shared that if he could go back, he’d “want to meet as many friends of the opposite sex as possible.”

Jenifer Lawrence

TAYLOR LAUTNER viewed himself as an outcast, but we’d like to think of him as pretty well-liked, judging from how many groups he fit in with. He once revealed he didn’t have a group of friends whom he hung out with daily. Instead, he’d hang out with different groups, like his friends in his football team, drama group and from video production. “I love hanging out with different people and just having fun,” he shared. Taylor Lautner

JENNIFER LAWRENCE was voted “most talkative”, yet still scored straight As and an impressive 3.9 GPA! On top of that, she was a cheerleader. Her parents only agreed to let her pursue acting on the condition that she finished high school, so with determination, she graduated two years early and has since never looked back. OCT 2014

BOWL R E V O ME Instant noodles are the easiest solution for lazy lunches and late-night study sessions, and those with spicy local flavours are hard to resist! After a noodle-eating marathon, find out which topped our list.

Nissin Seafood Curry Cup Noodles There’s not much broth, but it’s surprisingly thick and tasty, albeit quite mild in the spice department. The noodles soak up the soup quickly for maximum flavour, but slurp them up fast or they’ll get mushy. Shiok factor:

Prima Taste Singapore Curry La Mian

Maggi 2-min Extra Spicy Curry Instant Noodles Definitely the spiciest of the lot, so you’ll need a glass of cold water by your side. We love how fragrant the broth is, especially with the dried onion bits. The noodles are also chewier and come in a bigger portion compared to other Maggi noodles. Totally satisfying. Shiok factor:

The curry flavour was fragrant and aromatic, like it was homemade. It is one of the pricier options and we had hoped for more spice, but the tasty broth and springy noodles were totally worth it. Shiok factor:

MAKE IT FIVE-STAR

$4.50

for a pack of four

Here are some delicious add-ons to turn your fiery noodles into an extra tasty meal!

EGGS

You can have them runny, hard-boiled or even freshly cracked into the soup.

My Kuali Penang White Curry Noodles The noodles are nice and chewy, but we think the broth is the real winner. Not only is it a fiery blend of different spices that lingers on our tastebuds, it’s also very rich and an authentic replication of the curry laksa in Malaysia.

VEGETABLES

Add some fibre to your meal with some easy greens like bok choy or cabbage.

Shiok factor:

Myojo Bowl Asam Laksa The tanginess of the asam wakes up our appetite, but there’s barely any heat. It’s good for those who can’t take spice, but may be a little bland for those expecting some kick. Shiok factor:

SEAFOOD

Prawns are pretty straightforward to cook, but you can opt for something even simpler like crabsticks.

$1.25 each

Myojo Big Bowl Singapore Laksa

LEFTOVERS

Add the tasty bits from last night’s leftovers. Just remember to drain the gravy so that you don’t taint the broth.

The broth is a little thin and the noodles get soggy if you don’t eat them fast, but this is the perfect bowl if you’re not looking for anything too heavy. Shiok factor:

$1.60 each

CHILLI

Chop some chilli padi or add a generous spoonful of sambal if you can take more heat in your noodles. OCT 2014

Dear readers, There is an old saying: “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me”. Children used to defiantly yell this at their perceived “enemy” at the playground years ago.

their teachers called them – names like “stupid”, “dumb”, “dummy”, “hopeless”, “idiot”, and statements like, “You have no hope”.

I learnt early, from a strict no-nonsense mum, that words could hurt, even more than a slap or punch on the arm, as words could leave a lasting impression on people. Sternly, mum made it clear no slapping or punching others either.

An example – a distraught mother tearfully confided that her Primary 1 daughter’s teacher said, “Hopeless, better to stay at home and learn to sweep.” Upon investigation, I discovered the child had dyslexia and so had difficulty learning to read. Arrangements were made to help the child and she is doing very well in college now, but the hurt will never really go away.

Many are unaware of the power of words. They can be used for positive purposes, and this is uplifting and makes life good. On the other hand, negative comments lead to demoralisation, regardless of whether the victim knows the identity of the verbal attacker, or when it appears online typed by an anonymous keyboard enemy or bully.

Fortunately, these days, teachers are more in control, but I urge students not to repeat any negative words hurled by any teacher, further scaring the victim. Many victims don’t want to go to school, some skip school and a few contemplate suicide. I repeat – people write to me and speak to me; that’s how I know.

Egos are destroyed, confidence is shattered and even deaths have resulted from online bullying. Indeed words can ‘kill’ – physically, emotionally and socially.

Abusive language at home – it is really sad the number of letters I receive listing the name-calling some parents subject their children to. Calling one’s child “idiot”, “stupid”, “useless”, “lazy”, “fat” and saying “no hope” and “can’t be my child” absolutely devastates a child.

In schools – scores of verbal victims are called names like “retard”, “slut”, “useless”, “fatty”, “smelly”, “gay” (and its various language equivalents in Chinese, Indian and Malay), and some even have to contend with derogatory references to colour. This is unacceptable. Such attacks destroy a person’s sense of self-worth. I get heartbreaking letters from “verbal victims”, many pleading with me to help them as they want to skip school, change schools, leave school, and in some cases, kill themselves as they can’t take the verbal taunts anymore. At face-to-face counselling sessions with school bullies, the most often repeated defence is, “I was only playing/ teasing/ joking.” Bullying is contagious. It is a free-for-all. Anyone can join in and many do. When asked, “Why do you bully?” The response usually is: “Everyone is doing it.” But this doesn’t make it okay. At counselling sessions, some victims say they have been targeted since kindergarten. Negative words have a devastating effect on children that often follow them into the teenage years and beyond. Abusive labels uttered by teachers – unfortunately, some teachers have a short fuse or are unaware, for some reason, that name-calling scars students, often for life. I know because I get letters and speak to adults who have a low self-image because of what

100 OCT 2014

If you are a victim of derogatory statements and name-calling by teachers and/or parents please remember it is done in the heat of the moment. Understand that frustration, problems, and a generally bad day could result in an adult lashing out at a child. But I make no excuses for adults who lash out at kids. Plain speaking is acceptable; insults are not. The downside of name-calling – it causes a devastating lowering of self-esteem, a loss of confidence, a “loss of face” and could lead to depression and self-loathing. One successful professional explained: “Even though I am successful and now slim, childhood taunts remain in my subconscious. If I hear the word “fatty”, whether uttered on TV or while on the road, my heart begins to flutter. The feeling of being verbally abused never really goes away.” How utterly sad this is… I hope this makes all of us stop and think. Words can indeed hurt deeply and leave a lasting scar. Always here for you.

All alone… depressed I’ve been your fan since I was young. Your column taught me how to overcome my fears and worries. For years, I have had to face a truly frustrating situation.

My friends are saying bad things about me behind my back. They force me to help them with homework and make me clean up the mess they make. They often bully me and make other friends distrust me. I had a best friend for years and we were happy together. We ate together, did homework together and did all the things best friends do. Then my friends told my best friend bad things about me. My best friend stopped trusting me. I lost my best friend. I went to the school counsellor but did not get help. Now I have no real friends. These friends make me do all kinds of things for them. I have considered transferring to another school or class so I won’t be jeered at and embarrassed. Nobody wants to be my partner during projects or study class. I am depressed and don’t know how to cope with this situation. My parents won’t get me a transfer. I don’t know what to do. Please help me, Kelly. From: Depressed

Kelly: I am amazed that you allow these so-called friends to walk all over you. You seem the best in terms of academic excellence, since it is you who has to help them with their homework. Since you come from a place of strength, why would you have to do as they say? What’s wrong with you? Why would you “clean up the mess they make”? You are not their maid! You are ready to make changes. This is why you wrote to me knowing you’ll get some no-nonsense advice. You have to be firm. Walk away from these ungrateful people. They are not your “friends”. They are using and abusing you because they know they can. How sad is this! If they ask you why you no longer want to hang out with them, firmly say you prefer to study alone and walk away. No backtracking or they will bully your even more. You don’t deserve this. Go to the school library where silence must be maintained, so if you work there, they can’t expect you to help them with their work and definitely they cannot “make a mess” in the library. At the library, you’ll probably meet other students, those that value learning. You could find a friend or maybe a group of friends there. I have reservations about your so-called “best friend”. I don’t think a best

friend could be so easily swayed by the opinions of people speaking ill of her best friend, which is you. If she was indeed your best friend she would have defended you and told your detractors off. She, who knows you well, should have defended you instead of turning away from you. This is sad but you must face facts and understand that this best friend isn’t really best friend material. Forget her.

Having said this, I have to ask, is there any truth in what your detractors say? Is that why your so-called “best friend” turned away from you? Only you can answer this question. Here’s a thought – you could approach your former best friend and ask her why everyone, including her, has turned against you. You might learn an important lesson from her answer. A chat with your form teacher is called for. Tell your form teacher that no one wants to partner you during project work. Speak to the principal and ask if you can be transferred to another class either immediately, or at the end of the year. Honestly tell them your problems. I fully understand how you feel and I sympathise with you. May life improve after your chat with your form teacher and the principal. I wish you well.
