Ed's Note Hi everyone, Can you believe it’s already October? Before the end of year madness gets into full swing, we

wanted to chill out with a fun #Throwback issue. After all, not only do classic makeup and fashion always come back in trend, there’s always something interesting to be

learned while looking back. For example, through doing research for the Beauty Through The

Ages (p. 24) article, I learned that during the

1920s, women gained unprecedented freedom, like the right to vote, to work (and shop more). That was in western countries of course, but

it was nonetheless a paradigm shift that marked the changes to come – you get my drift. This month, we reintroduce classic games turned into apps, like Pac-Man, Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog (p. 16), retro tech gadgets (p. 14) and the best kopitiam makan spots (p.10) to chow down at. Also, check out our breakdown on jobs that didn’t exist 20 years ago (think of all the opportunities!) (p. 72) and nifty vintageinspired Instagram accounts (p. 18) to follow. Also, in true Halloween spirit, we’ve

compiled a list of bizarre old wives tales (p. 76) you might be all too familiar with. Till the next issue!

Johanna LOVING THIS MONTH: Kiehl’s has always been big on giving back to the community. In celebration of their 165th anniversary, the beauty brand is launching the #LoveYourLocals campaign, a movement which aims to unite Singaporeans and raise funds for charity. Featuring cool limited-edition designs on iconic Kiehl’s products like the Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner ($58) and Ultra Facial Cream ($48), there’s also a super artsy, limited-edition recyclable tote bag up for grabs at only $3 with purchase of any products from this collection! Available from 1 October, all proceeds collected from the sale of the tote bags will be donated to the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

t’s pretty much official that Singapore is the second home of got7: the K-pop septet has already made three visits to our sunny shores in the last two years, and they returned for the fourth time to stage their maiden solo concert – and boy was it a whole new level of intensity. in-between the high-energy routines and surprise stages, there was hardly any time for us to even take a breather from the three-hour mayhem. ust a few days after the madness that was GOT7, fellow K-pop boy band B.A.P kicked off their LIVE ON EARTH 2016 WORLD TOUR SINGAPORE AWAKE!! concert at The Star Theatre. This might be their third tour in Singapore, but it also marks their long-anticipated return to our shores after their long legal battle with TS Entertainment, which makes it way more memorable than any other show they’ve played here. And they wasted no time pulling out all the stops, ripping through a hit-packed set list accompanied with an

“Is this a rock concer t or a dance par ty? Or both?”

Unlike their previous concerts here, they’ve brought along a DJ set and a live band to literally amplify the whole rock vibe. As much as we loved their punchy crowd pleasers, there’s just something about the raw energy from the remixed versions that makes you feel alive.

Holler at us! We want to know what you think of Teenage, how our stories make a difference in your life, and where we can improve. Here’s how!

The August issue changed the way I see a few things, particularly, myself. I wasn’t born in Singapore and even though I was raised here, I felt different somehow, as if I didn’t fit in with the rest of my friends. But after reading this issue, I realised that I had nothing to worry about. I even took the ‘How Singaporean Are You’ quiz with my friends, and I was really surprised that I scored more points than them! Thank you for making me realise that even though I wasn’t born in Singapore, it doesn’t mean I’m not part of Singapore.

Hi Teenage! I remember seeing my friend reading one of your issues in May 2014 when Girls’ Generation had their fourth mini album Mr.Mr. – ever since then, I have been so excited for the next Teenage issue. I was really overjoyed when you featured my favourite K-pop band, B.A.P, on the cover a few months ago. I also appreciate that it comes along with a poster. I like the Dear Kelly section as it reminds me to be safe and teaches me to stay away from dangerous threats. I do have my own share of friendship problems as well, so the section gave me loads of advices!

We have three sets of Teenage Beauty Hampers worth $1,500 each up for grabs! Head over to www.teenage.com.sg/win and enter this promo code <TN09TBA> to win. Closing date: 25 Sep 2016

Thank you for doing articles on GOT7’s and B.A.P’s concerts when they visited Singapore! Being a fan of both groups, I’m glad the boys are doing well and had lots of fun here! And I just want to say that the photos in every issue are amazing and beautiful. I’ve always wanted to be a photographer when I grow up, and the photos you put in every issue are perfect! Lastly, I just want to say thank you for all your dedication to producing good reads for us. Teenage has really helped me through some tough times in my life, I will support you all the way! Yours truly, Shifa

Thanks for the support, Shifa! Your letter has been chosen as the ‘Letter of the Month’!

7

Dear Teenage, I’ve been a reader of the magazine since I was Primary 5. Being a K-pop fan, I just had to buy the magazines and collect the posters of my favourite groups. I’m already in the first year of my polytechnic life and I read Teenage for the beauty info! I went out just to buy the September issue because of the Teenage Beauty Awards! Teenage has been part of my growing process and I’m glad there’s also a Dear Kelly section that offers great advice – even my brother reads it sometimes. I think the editing and aesthetics of the magazine is A+ and I can’t find an area for improvement. Thank you Teenage! 24

Blast To The Past Channel the decades past with inspiration from these Instagram pros who’ve got their vintage game down pat. By Rasti Annisa Iwan

Curstie Marie @missvintagelady Nothing says Old Hollywood glam better than Curstie Marie’s Instagram account. The blogger and makeup artist crafts gorgeous OOTDs in delicate vintage dresses, fabulous perms and flawless makeup, winning the hearts of over 15,000 followers and counting. What’s more, the Insta-famous pin-up girl has just started her own YouTube channel, so be sure to subscribe for more glamorous hair and makeup tutorials!

Arthur Elgort

Tony Medina

@arthurelgort

@hisvintagetouch

Offering more than a sneak peek into the fashion industry, Arthur Elgort’s account is a treasure trove of his works from post-70s till date. Having photographed iconic models like Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Tyra Banks and more in the past decades, it’s interesting to see Arthur’s recent works featuring today’s famous faces (think Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss), aligned neatly in an Instagram feed. The subtle juxtaposition between classic and modern styles, be it in photography, fashion, makeup, etc. is truly a sight to behold. Now that’s what we call a true #throwback!

If you’re looking for a retro hairdo, Tony Medina’s Instagram account has an array of inspiration for you to follow. Like his username suggests, the talented hairstylist lends a vintage touch to every mane he handles, transforming his customers into pin-up masterpieces. Tony’s flair has even landed him a steady stream of celebrity clientele from the likes of Lil’ Kim, Charlotte Olympia and more! Helen Ruth Van Winkle @baddiewinkle Helen Van Winkle aka baddiewinkle is definitely the hippest great grandmother in the world. Capturing the Internet’s love with her eccentric (and extremely wild) choice of outfits, the 88-year-old’s getups include neon fur coats, lace-up skirts, and everything rainbow; the louder, the better. Boasting 2.2 million Instagram followers (including Rihanna!), baddie makes regular appearances on MTV, shops at Sephora, raves at EDM festivals, and even performed at the VMAs! Guess we can safely say that she’s a great grandmother indeed.

Annelies van Overbeek @anneliesvanoverbeek Bearing an uncanny resemblance to British icon Audrey Hepburn, Annelies van Overbeek earned a massive number of followers (including us) who were initially attracted to her looks, but stayed for her quirky charm and exceptional makeup skills. While it’s hard to believe that Annalies is only 18, this Breakfast at Tiffany’s actress’ lookalike is passionate about recreating the looks of classical stars (apart from Audrey Hepburn) and fictional characters – check out her Harry Potter transformation and you’ll get our drift.

Kate Gabrielle @kategabrielle Pretty in pink might be the best way to describe Kate Gabrielle and her Instagram account. Her pink-filtered feed displays tons of fun and colourful outfit mix n’ matches inspired by ’60s fashion. Besides advocating retro style, the cottoncandy-haired entrepreneur also has her own label of handmade accessories. You can expect kooky stuff like dinosaur skull brooches, BFF pendants for cats and humans, ’90s Nostalgia Kits, and more quirkiness which can be found at www.kategabrielle.com!

the flapper girl

Redefining the fashion, makeup and lifestyle of decades past, the women of the ’20s were flamboyant, daring and unconventional. These unflappable ladies favoured khol-rimmed eyes, pale skin and red-painted lips with a defined cupid’s bow to go with their glamorous soirees.

Then, using a lip pencil or a fine lip brush, shape a deep Cupid’s bow and fill in from there. For a shimmery touch, dab on highlighter down the centre of your lips.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925)

Something Old, Something New

Translating classic literature to the silver screen is no small undertaking, but here’s a list of modern adaptations that their original authors would approve of.

In the book: When World War 1 veteran Nick Carraway chances upon the lavish lifestyle of his dirt-rich neighbour Gatsby, he didn’t expect to be the first and only one to receive an invitation to one of his extravagant parties. And he certainly didn’t expect to title his memoir – a tale of love, empty wealth and betrayal – The Great Gatsby. On the screen: An irrefutable classic that had its fair share of adaptations, The Great Gatsby was everywhere from theatres to cinemas, ballet to opera, radio to computer games. The 2013 version had Leonardo DiCaprio bringing Jay Gatsby to life, proving its box office prowess by becoming the highest-grossing movie in director Baz Luhrmann’s lifetime. While it’s probably not the best choice for the ‘old sports’, it’s still a masterpiece to behold – one stacked with visual splendour, beautiful narration and an A-list soundtrack at that. Well, the least we can all agree on is that Leonardo throws the best parties! Wonder where’s the location of the Gatsby mansion in the film? It’s actually Baz’s old high school in Australia, after the post-editing magic of computer graphics.

By Chew Hui Ling

In the book: Set in 19th century France, the story follows ex-convict Jean Valjean, who is on the run from a villainous inspector after breaking parole. Turning his life around as a respected factory owner, Jean meets a destitute worker and vows to take care of her daughter. Nine years later, he finds himself butting heads again with his old nemesis as the Paris revolution erupts. On the screen: You don’t have to be a theatre aficionado to know Les Misérables – the French novel that was deemed so Oscar-worthy that it spawned a glitzy repertoire of adaptations, especially the 2012 Hollywood hit. The cast is brilliant, the music is phenomenal, and the cinematography is stunning in all its patriotic glory – what’s there to fault? Before Samantha Barks, there were some pretty surprising contenders for the role of Eponine, including Lea Michele and Taylor Swift! We don’t know about you, but we’d love to get our hands on those audition tapes.

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo (1862)

52

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

On the screen: The original literature might be gold, but the 1961 by Truman Capote (1958) rom-com of Breakfast at Tiffany’s is undoubtedly a solid interpretation that hits the right spot. Hardcore fans might nitpick at the inclusion of a loveline between the narrator (played by George Peppard) and Holly, but we think it’s a nice touch to the one-person centric story. Not to mention the fact that Audrey Hepburn totally nailed the character. She’s every bit as charismatic and in-your-face as her novel counterpart, which is impressive considering how the late actress was an introvert in real In the book: From the perspective of an life. And seriously, if you don’t eat Danish unnamed narrator, he becomes friends with pastries while walking down the streets, you a country girl by the name of Holly Golightly, can’t sit with us (kidding). who dreams of riches and living in a big city. On first impression, she’s the life of the party who has no lack of suitors, but when you get to know her, Holly has more secrets than you could imagine.

Audrey Hepburn was paid a whopping $750,000 for the role, which is equivalent to almost $6 million today!

In the book: Free-spirited Elizabeth Bennet meets arrogant bachelor Mr. Darcy, who refuses to have anything to do with anyone beneath his class. Soon, sparks start to fly between the unlikely pair despite Elizabeth’s initial despise of his attitude. Will they end up happily ever after in true fairytale fashion?

chemistry, and director Joe Wright captured it in the most breathtaking way possible. Don’t judge us, but we can’t help but shed a tear or two whenever it comes to the scene of Elizabeth rejecting Darcy’s first proposal. Excuse us while we rewatch it for the umpteenth time.

On the screen: Jane Austen is much like the Nicholas Sparks of our generation, but fortunately, the former enjoyed pretty decent remakes in film, television and theatre alike. Notably, the Old Hollywood take on the romantic novel in 2005 produced one of our favourite pairings ever in the history of P&P – both Matthew Macfadyen and Keira Knightley displayed impeccable

Should we even be surprised that Matthew and Keira actually took their romance from reel to real? The couple dated from 2005 all

Let’s Talk About Tosh He played a platoon sergeant, a lion dance champ, and a kampong boy, but when he’s out of character, Tosh Zhang (aka Tosh Rock) is merely your everyday guy “repping the 65”.

He’s an “awkward tur tle”

Before he was famous, Tosh had no qualms making unfiltered commentaries on everything from MRT rants to armpit hair woes. However, during our interview with the actor who’s currently promoting his latest film My Love Sinema, he expresses: “People think I’m loud and talkative because I give that impression on YouTube, but I’m much more reserved in real life.” Take off his brassy shell and all you’re left with is an “awkward turtle that doesn’t know how to start a conversation”. Just imagine the atmosphere between Tosh and his onscreen love interest Cheryl Wee when they had to “hold hands and look into each other’s eyes” on their first meeting!

#2

Mates before dates (Really?)

“I’m more of a bro,” he reveals. “I’ve never liked bringing my girlfriend

along when I’m hanging out with my friends ‘cause you’ll forget to give attention to her.” When asked what’s the cheesiest thing he’s ever done for his lady, he confessed that he usually goes for the bad boy route. “I once lied to my girlfriend about going on an overseas work trip on her birthday,” he quips. “But I was actually waiting outside her house with balloons and cakes.” Okay, Tosh might not be the most romantic, but he certainly knows a thing or two ‘bout surprising his girl.

#3

No more dreadlocks please!

We’ve heard stories of actors doing insane things from starving themselves to breaking bones just to prepare for their roles, but thankfully Tosh did nothing of that sort. However, he did have a hairier nightmare to deal with: dreadlocks. “I had to get dreadlocks

56

in The Lion Men, which I regretted so much because it screwed up my scalp,” he dishes. “They even made me wear this hideous wig for the pre-look of the character. It was extremely stupid.” Hey, at least it looked cool on him!

#4

Sergeant Ong on the outside, Kheong on the inside

“I have that kind of face that makes you want to punch me when I don’t smile,” he half-jokes, elaborating that wearing this default expression led to Jack Neo’s accidental casting of the Ah Boys To Men star. Despite his misunderstood personality, Tosh relates more to Kheong, his ’50s alter ego in My Love Sinema, as “he’s the type who’d forget about everything else and put in 110% for the things he’s passionate about”. Well, we kinda love the idea of Sergeant Kheong...

Always A Winner

Part-time idol, full-time nerd, and 24/7 husband, there’s a lot more to know (and love) about the Singapore Idol turned multi-talented entertainer. By Chew Hui Ling

“P

eople only know me from the songs I did on [Singapore] Idol. Now’s my chance to let you guys know what kind of person I really am,” said the talent show winner in an older interview. Then 21-year-old, Sezairi won many hearts when he was crowned our third Singapore Idol in 2009. And he managed to land a major record deal with Sony Music Singapore and became a household name in the local scene. Making a comeback with his first English self-titled EP, we get a glimpse into the lesser-known side of Sezairi beyond his musical persona – love, nerdy tendencies, and all.

Photos: Sony Music Singapore

#SupportLocal by downloading Sezairi’s new self-titled EP on iTunes, out now!

#2

He’s pretty geeky

#3

He’s going places

Let’s face it: Sezairi’s social media game is hard to beat. Go follow him on Snapchat (SezairiSnaps) ‘cause it’s chock-full of cute kitty shenanigans – thanks to his six cheeky felines at home. Not to mention his daily tweets at @sezairi where you’ll find Pokémon rants, nonsensical banter and occasional philosophical spurts. We’ll never forget the time when he secretly live-tweeted the reaction of an Uber driver who was jamming out to his lead single ‘Fire To The Floor’. Even uncles aren’t susceptible to his talent!

He keeps it real

Sorry guys, but the crooner’s officially off the market after tying the knot back in January. While his new record is dedicated to the love story between him and his longtime girlfriend (now wife), it’s much less of a romantic tale that many would’ve thought. “It’s not a happy album,” he explains. “It’s not like, ‘Hey, I met you and this is crazy, call me maybe’. It’s very personal and that made me really scared to release it.” You get a handful of breezy bops like ‘Terrified’ and ‘Fire To The Floor’, but there are also tender ballads like ‘Empty’ and ‘It Will Never Mend’ that provide an emotional window into the ups and downs of their relationship. It’s a “passion project” he bared all his heart into, and one he wastes no time telling everyone about.

57

Sezairi’s an amazing singer, but what most people don’t know is that he’s surprisingly gifted in the acting department. Since his Singapore Idol days, the singer has ventured into acting with roles in homegrown film 1965 as well as musical The Emperor’s New Clothes, to critical acclaim. And that’s just the beginning; we foresee even more exciting opportunities ahead for this talented chap!

Nothing represents the era where everything was all about fun and colours better than the songs that make you do the shimmy. While you may not be donning any glittery spandex, you should still shake it to these ’80s radio staples and let loose your inner dancing queen!

Before the likes of Calvin Harris and Avicii took over party playlists everywhere, dance floor enthusiasts shook it to hip-hop beats and funky house music. Let your hair down and boogie to the tunes that dominated the dance floors back in the ’00s!

With smooth moves, beautiful faces and iconic voices, these superstars paved the way for the Ariana Grandes, Miley Cyrus’ and Taylor Swifts of today. And while they’re still making charttoppers, nothing beats these glorious classics that’ll transport you back into their true ’90s heydays.

DearKelly Dear readers, The major exams are fast approaching, so I thought a few extra pointers would be useful for those getting nervous or if you need an extra boost as you prepare to tackle what lies ahead. Naturally, you will be nervous: it is okay to be worried. You are expected to experience twinges of apprehension in the days ahead. Knowing these feelings are normal is reassuring. Even the most prepared student suffers from some anxiety. Anxiety acts as a booster. It encourages us to persevere and succeed. Complacency is our

biggest enemy. Each of you has travelled a different path. You find yourself in a situation unique to yourself but there are many common experiences you all share. Some students have been preparing for the major exam during the long vacation the year before. These students have drawn up study timetables, bought files, stickers labels, study cards in different sizes and colours. Some may have a study buddy and/or study group. There are students who opt to study alone. Do what works for you. Your objective –

‘To score in the exam’.

Exam fever This is not an exhaustive list. I would need to write a booklet to cover everything I’d like to write.

This is especially aimed at those who feel they have left studying to the last minute and are giving up hope. Refer to the brief guide below to get you through the coming days:

1

Panic – not enough time to cover everything. Stop! Avoid this defeatist

attitude. The way to go is to make use of every moment you have. Never give up hope. Understand that if you put in 50 per cent effort, you would know 50 per cent more then you did yesterday. This attitude is positive and helpful.

2

Study buddy – get a study buddy. You can support and inspire each other. Serious studying is at the centre of this union.

(a) Together, draw up a study timetable that’s realistic. List too much to cover each day and you’ll give up. During the year, teachers would have highlighted important topics. Concentrate on these areas. (b) Divide the work to be put on study cards for easy revision. (c) You can study in school or at each other’s houses with your parents’ permission. (d) Allocate time for individual study; then test each other. This is a form of double revision. (e) Put brief notes on mahjong paper and paste these in your room for daily viewing.

3

Breaks – take a 10-minute break after every 30 to 40 minutes of study. Use an alarm to make sure you get back to work on time. Get a warm drink, munch on a cracker, have a quick chat over the phone during breaks.

4

No electronic gadgets – trust

me, electronic gadgets and study are not a match. Put them in another room when studying. You’ll be glad you did when you do well in the exams. This is a time for self-control. You are not a parent, doctor or business tycoon who needs to be available 24/7. Your ‘job’ is to score in the exam.

5

Get your priorities straight

– only one TV programme a day as a way to relax. Your focus is the

88

forthcoming exam. After the exam, you can watch TV all day if you wish.

6

Ask for help – you and your study

buddy should list all the items you are not sure of and approach your subject teachers for clarification.

7

Sip water – take regular sips of water. You need to be hydrated. Avoid fast food and fizzy drinks.

8

Weekend break – a half-day outing as a well-deserved reward is a good way to de-stress and have a bit of fun. You deserve this.

9

Avoid procrastination – you

must stick with the timetable during this crucial learning period. If you break the cycle, it might be difficult to get back on track and you might give up. It is a time to exercise self-control.

10

Display a mantra on the wall – examples: “Study now for

a bright future”, “Work now, play later”, “Hard work pays”, “I will succeed”.

11

Seven hours sleep nightly – this is vital. People who lack sleep are at a disadvantage. Don’t ever sacrifice sleep.

12

Illness – should you fall sick, go to the doctor and get medication. You can’t concentrate if you are unwell.

13

Prayer – if you have a religion, do say a prayer when you arise and go to bed. Prayer has a calming effect that soothes the body and mind. I wish all of you success. Always here for you,

Drunken dad

beats mum Dear Kelly, I am so afraid. My dad drinks a lot and often comes home drunk.

If my mum says one word to him, he beats her. She comes to sleep with me when this happens but dad will come and drag her off, sometimes by the hair. He screams and yells and neighbours have called the police a few times because of all the yelling and mum crying around 3am when he returns drunk. Mum is a housewife and when she had a bad bruise or black eye, she begs me to go grocery shopping for her because she is embarrassed. I help her after school. I am also embarrassed. My neighbours pretend they hear and see nothing, and mum and I are grateful for this. I noticed if neighbours see dad waiting for the lift, they’d walk away, not wanting to go into the same lift as him.

Kelly: I am so sorry for your mum.

She must be living in terror of your dad. To wait in fear for her husband to return drunk must take a toll on her. It can’t be easy for you either. It must be terrible for mum to have to ask you to do the shopping when she sports a black eye and bruises. Can you

Mum is a housewife and when she had a bad bruise or black eye, she begs me to go grocery shopping for her because she is embarrassed. My lessons are suffering as I am awoken when dad returns drunk.

I cry and am unable to sleep because I worry about mum. Please tell me and mum what to do. We are Christians and we pray every day that dad will change. Please help me Kelly, and may God bless you for helping mum and I. Thank you.

and mum stay with a relative until the situation is resolved? I say this because I worry for mum in case your dad injures her badly one day. Please ask mum to visit the pastor and have an honest conversation about what is going on. The police has not stopped dad. He has not changed. Let’s see what the pastor can do for the family. I hope all turns out well for you and mum… and of course dad.
